for 31 years and counting. Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges, but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of art to the community is a priority for Hobday, who is a watercolor artist herself. Tide Battles Pequea Valley, Annville-Cleona by Sam Valentin
Columbia’s baseball team snapped its two game win streak on Monday, April 29th when the Pequea Valley Braves came to town. It was a commanding performance by the Braves as they beat the Tide 16-0 in a game that only lasted four full innings. Most Tide players got one at bat during the game with Matthew Gambler and Ryan Hinkle making the most of their lone appearances, recording the only hits for Columbia on the day. As a team, Columbia batted a mere .167 which is unusually low as Ryan Redding and Zac Nikolaus normally lead the way since they have been tearing it up all year. Nikolaus struck out two batters on his way to an unfortunate lopsided loss. Behind him, Columbia committed just one error. The Tide’s luck did not get much better a couple days later as they traveled to the Annville-Cleona Dutchmen on Wednesday, May 1st dropping another game, 6-1. Redding returned to his normal self, recording one hit and working two walks while also starting the game on the bump. He pitched two

day. Hershey doubled in Hinkle in the top of the fourth for the lone run. Nikolaus also recorded a hit at the top of the lineup. The Tide left seven on base throughout the day so with some timely hitting, they should have been able to capitalize for more runs. On the year, the boys’ have plated 81 runs on 109 hits. Nikolaus sits at 3-3 with 22 strikeouts. Redding, who gets much recognition for his bat, has also been pitching well for the Tide. He is 1-3 with 15 strikeouts on the year. Matt McCleary has also recorded a win on the year paired with six punch outs. These losses move the team to 6-12 overall and 5-11 in the league to date. This places the Tide in the middle of the pack in the L-L League Section Four. The boys are two and a half games back of Pequea Valley for third and are well ahead of Lancaster Mennonite and Lancaster Catholic. Columbia has just two games remaining, only one being a league matchup. They travel to Lancaster Photo by Cheri Sine Mennonite for their final Tide starter Zac Nikolaus delivers a pitch to the plate during Columbia’s 15-0 Section Four loss to visiting Pequea Valley last section meeting and a chance to distance themMonday. selves from the Blazers in innings while surrendering three hits, giving up one earned while striking out one in his start. He was charged with the loss. Columbia scattered five hits and only scored one run while batting .240 as a team. Much of the production came from the bottom of the lineup as Ryan Hinkle and David Hershey each recorded two hits on the
the standings. Their final matchup will be a home game against York School of Technology on Thursday, May 9th. SOFTBALL In what may be the lone bright spot on the week for Columbia Athletics, the girls’ softball team came to play Friday, April 26, as they poured in 25 runs earing a huge section win against Lebanon Catholic. This is the most runs the ladies have scored all year. Although the 21 runs they dropped on Lebanon Catholic earlier in the season is a near second. All 25 runs came in the top of the first inning but the Lady Tide did allow 10 runs in the bottom half of the frame. Ultimately those ten runs did not matter as the mercy rule was evoked resulting a in a quick 25-10 win. Unfortunately the ladies could not keep the bats alive as a new week dawned which brought them to games against Pequea Valley and Annville Cleona. Both games resulted in losses. Pequea Valley traveled to Columbia on April 29th and left with a 10-1 win. Emily Waugh again was in the circle for the Tide as she was charged for the loss but did strike out two during her outing. Columbia mustered just three hits and scored their lone run in the sixth inning. Next up Columbia traveled to Annville-Cleona May 1 and came away with a 7-0 loss. The ladies recorded four hits and did take the

Dutch-women all seven innings. Waugh got the start and finished with four strikeouts on the day. After this week, Waugh is 1-6 with 33 strikeouts on the year. As a team, Columbia has scored 89 runs on 75 hits. Their game on May 2nd against Garden Spot was postponed due to the forecast of storms with a makeup date to be announced. The Tide is currently 2-13 in the league and 3-13 overall. They sit just ahead of Lebanon Catholic and barely behind Lancaster Mennonite in the standings. Columbia needs one more win to match last years total in the section and needs to win their last two games to match their overall record last year. They travel, for their final league game, to Lancaster Mennonite while their final game, a nonleague bout, sees York School of Technology coming
to Columbia on May 9. TRACK Both track teams dropped another league meet to Northern Lebanon this week. The boys lost 129-18 but there was a bright spot as Tucker won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet and 10.5 inches. They also placed a couple other top three finishes to pick up a few more points. On the season, Anthony Palmisaro has a win in the 800m with a time of 2:34.9. Justin Elliot has a first place finish as well in the high jump at five feet and six inches. The girls’ team, without winning a single event, lost 122-17. Cassidy Cook has a win on the year in the 800m with a time of 3:07.2. Jordan Sabina has won two events on the year in high hurdles and long jump recording 20.6 and 13-10 respectively. Bland also added a win in the 400m dash with a time of 73.9. Both teams are winless on the year but only one win away from tying Lancaster Mennonite. The teams finish out their league season against Octorara.

their season record at 7-7 overall. The Golden Knights blew by Kennard-Dale on April 25, 17-5. Kade Wiley finished the win with 10 saves but was never really in trouble thanks to four scores from Cayden Michael combined with three goals and three assists from Gavin Evans. Bryce Henise and Jake Crumling added two scores each while Gage Barton, Torin Young, Rylan Emlet, Lance Manzanet, Zach Grove and Jack Deerdorf chipped in one score each. A few days later Eastern York topped West York by a 1310 final. This time it was Crumling leading the way with five goals and one assist. Michael and Henise netted a hat trick each while Stephen Wisler and Grove picked up the final two scores. Wiley turned away nine shots to secure the win.

Church Slates Plant Sale St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville, will hold its fifth annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. Annuals, vegetables and herbs will be available for purchase. Separate fees have been set for Gerber daisies; for geraniums and other packs of six annuals; for herbs, tomato plants, and pepper plants; and for zucchini, eggplant, and cucumber plants. Proceeds from this sale will again benefit the New Life Children’s Home, a ministry of New Life Mission - Haiti Inc. St. Paul continues to support this mission and will use its Global Mission Fund to match proceeds from the plant sale. New Life Children’s Home is an orphanage located in the small village of Charrier, L’artibonite, Haiti. The orphanage offers a School Sponsorship Program that unites underprivileged Haitian children with sponsors to fund the children’s education. Haitian families must pay to send their children to school, but many families cannot do so because of poor economic conditions and a lack of jobs. The cost of $300 per year includes uniforms, books and tuition.
New Life Children’s Home officially opened in January 2019 with two children. Two more children are scheduled to move in at the end of the school year in June. The Children’s Home has a capacity to care for 12 children plus staff. The ministry’s latest project is construction of a medical clinic on-site. Currently, the closest medical clinic is more than an hour away, and transportation to that location is expensive. Many people are unable to receive medical care due to impoverished conditions. Teams from the United States are encouraged to visit the facility in Haiti. For more information, readers may visit www.newlifemissionhaiti.com. For more information about the plant sale, readers may call the church at 717-872-7392. Thrivent Financial has again provided “seed” money for this outreach project.

knock. Renn finished up the first inning scoring with a sac fly two batters later that made it 2-0. Taylor was one of three players with two hits in the game but was the only member of that trio to drive in a run, doing so with a second inning double that gave Eastern a much-needed insurance run. Bermudian put together a bottom of the seventh rally that pushed two runs across and left the the tying run stranded on second while the winning run was on first. Rishell pitched his way out of that jam to secure the complete game win. He scattered eight hits with half coming during the Eagles nerve racking rally. He finished with six strikeouts and just one walk to go with those two earned runs.

The Eastern York track and field teams hosted York Suburban on April 30th and the result was an 86-60 loss for the boys. The Golden Knights did manage seven events wins with Demonte Martin and Drake Brown accounting for two each. Martin picked up his wins in the 110H (15.2) and the high jump (5-11) while Brown did his work with wins in the shotput (38-8.25) and discus (135-2). Westin McLain tossed the javelin 133-1 to give Eastern first place in all three throws while Hailu Barrow added a pole vault win with a top height of 9-6. Gavin Johnson claimed the final victory with a 37-3.5 in the triple jump. The Golden Knights also took part in the 12th Annual Cy Fritz Open on the 26th. Eastern came back from Millersville with four medals, two each by Martin and Olivia McLain. Martin posted a 15.05 in the 110H finals to capture gold while settling for silver in the 300H with a time of 40.72. McLain did all her work in the distance runs, taking fifth in the 1600m with a time of 5:25.76 and seventh in the 3200m with a time of 11:53.94. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse team split their past two games, falling to Kennard-Dale after slipping by West York. The Lady Golden Knights used 12 Addy Malone goals to defeat West York, 16-15, on April 30th. Ellie Lippy tacked on two scores while Annette Kurnik and Regan Young split the final two. Summer Breen finished the win with just two saves. One day later the Lady Golden Knights fell to KD by a 21-7 final. Malone netted all seven scores while Breen tallied three saves. SOFTBALL The easiest way to win a softball game is to not let your opponent score. That is the path the Lady Golden Knights took to wins over Dover and York Suburban. Up first was a 7-0 shutout of Dover on April 29th. Maelynn Leber tossed a one-hit gem to earn the win, adding nine strikeouts with no walks. She also helped her cause by poking a RBI double that put Eastern up 1-0 in the third. Kelsey Felix made it 20 with another run scoring double in the frame while Katie Lehman capped the three-run burst with a fielder’s choice RBI. Morgan Winter earned the Lady Golden Knights final RBI, making it 5-0 with her fourth inning single. Eastern tacked on one more fourth inning run for a 6-0 game with the final run coming in the fifth via a Dover error. The shutout fun continued on May 1st with an 11-0 blanking of York Suburban that lasted just six innings. Leber tossed her second straight one-hit gem, this time racking up nine strikeouts to go with one walk. McKenzie Buchmyer provided the offensive spark with a three-hit, five RBI game while Morgan Dobbeck added her own three hit, two RBI day. Buchmyer’s big bop came in the sixth where her three-run triple extended the lead to 8-0. Dobbeck’s two-run double also came as part of Eastern’s six run sixth, ending the game via 10-run rule. Buchmyer picked up her remaining RBI base hit during the Lady Golden Knights 5-0 first inning burst, smacking a triple to center that made it a 4-0 game. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team ripped off two wins to even
totaling a combined 18 kills, 23 digs, six blocks, two assists and three aces. Nolan Reichard added 15 assists, seven kills, four digs and one block against Dover with another 12 assists, one kill and one dig coming opposite the Bobcats. Nick Spotts posted matching 15 dig games while adding an assist in the Northeastern loss. Devyn Sanders chipped in with 10 digs, seven assists and one kill against Dover while Jake Kennell tallied nine digs, five kills, two blocks and one ace in the match with Northeastern. BASEBALL The baseball team ramped up their post season push, ripping off three straight wins to improve to 11-5 overall, settling into the eighth spot in the District 3-4A rankings with three games remaining in the regular season. The first of those wins came on April 25th with the Golden Knights topping Lancaster Mennonite by a 5-2 final. Emmit Silar was the star at the plate while Drew Dellinger picked up the win for five innings of work on the mound. Dellinger surrendered four hits and issued three walks, leading to two unearned Blazer runs in the top of the second. It took an inning, but the Golden Knights answered back with a two-run frame of their own, knotting the game just shy of the midway point. Silar was responsible for those two runs, ripping a single to center that plated Evan Rishell and Bren Taylor. Silar left his mark in the fifth when Eastern put together another rally. This time it was another one out single that put the Golden Knights up for good. Two batters later Quinton McNew grounded into a fielder’s choice with Taylor scoring from third and Silar racing in from second as Mennonite tried to pin down another out. The frantic play allowed enough breathing room for Owen Shimmel to pick up the easy two inning save. He allowed just one hit to go with three punchouts and one walk. After a few days rest the Golden Knights were back at it on the 29th, topping William Penn by a 15-5 final in six innings. Shimmel got the start and the win but missed out on the complete game after hitting his pitch limit with one out in the sixth. McNew covered the last two outs, adding one strikeout to Shimmel’s 10 while allowing the final Bearcat run. Eastern needed just 10 hits to earn the win thanks to nine free passes and three York High errors. Dyson Renn collected two of those hits, leading to two RBIs while Jacob Bardo matched the two RBIs on just one hit. Renn picked up his two RBIs over two separate at bats, the first being a one run double in the first that made it 4-0 with the second a fifth inning single that made it 7-2. Bardo also split his work into two at bats with his first inning fielder’s choice putting Eastern’s first run on the board. Bardo added a one run, sixth inning double for his lone hit of the game. Shimmel helped his cause with a two-run double to right in the fifth that pushed Eastern’s lead to 9-2. The Golden Knights picked up win number three of the stretch on May 1st, holding off Bermudian Springs and their seventh inning rally for the 3-2 win. Eastern York did their scoring early starting with a two run first. Four straight singles to open the game quickly made it 1-0 with Bardo enjoying the RBI that went with his base

He taught ninth- and 10th-grade American history and 11th-grade economics and government at Eastern York High School for 37 years. “There will be a mix of all kinds of music, including originals,” said White, who is a member of Fairmount UMC. “I am more country than anything else, (including) older country, like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.” White explained that the concert will take place outside the church fellowship hall. “There is a fellowship hall building, but (we also have) an outdoor picnic grove with a bandstand,” he noted.
A costumed pig, shown with York Youth Revolution youth group member Ashlynn Hower, invites local residents to purchase pork barbecue dinners on May 18 at Faith United Methodist Church in Hallam.
White said he is no stranger to outdoor venues. “I’m used to playing anywhere,” he stated. “I do a great deal of entertaining singing in churches and at banquets, weddings, for senior citizens and at little clubs. Sometime people sit and listen (to my music) and sometimes they can’t resist dancing.” During the concert, a food truck will offer snacks for sale, including hot dogs, french fries, popcorn and chicken. The YYR will sell baked goods, including whoopie pies and cookies. Proceeds will go to the YYR mission trip this June to Racine, Wis. “Wisconsin holds a special place in our hearts because last summer they had over 50 people come on a coach bus to Wrightsville to help with our Eastern York work camp,” noted Bachman. “We felt like we should go back to Wisconsin this year and pay them back.” Bachman, who will speak briefly about the mission trip during the concert intermission, noted that YYR takes part in an annual mission trip to help people in need. “It’s work suitable for teenagers,” he said. “It’s building handicapped ramps, painting and building steps. We put skirting around the bottom of trailers. It’s anything the kids are capable of doing with parental supervision.” In the event of rain, the concert may be canceled. Cancellation information will be posted on the YYR Facebook page, which can be found by searching for “York Youth Revolution YYR (York, PA).” The pig roast will be held rain or shine.

market booths as well as a mini carnival for children of all ages. When a child wins a carnival game, parents and guardians will receive discount coupons to Marietta businesses for goods and services. Also new this year will be the Marietta Day passport. To encourage visitors to circulate through the event and visit booths, the Marietta Area Business Association (MABA) will create a passport. Attendees may pick up a passport and receive a stamp when they visit designated spots. When they fill their passport with stamps, they can redeem it for a treat at a local ice cream cafe. Marietta Day is sponsored by MABA, which is comprised of merchants in and surrounding Marietta. The organization’s mission is to sponsor projects and programs that promote the economic, physical, and social prosperity of the Marietta area. Proceeds from the Marietta Day event benefit Marietta beautification, as well as economic and cultural development.
Church Will Present Organ Recital St. John’s Episcopal Church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta, will present an organ recital on Sunday, May 12, at 3 p.m. by Dr. Karl E. Moyer. This recital will be the third celebration of significant improvements to the two-manual pipe organ, which was rededicated in 2018. As such, the recital is designed to demonstrate as many of the organ’s capabilities as possible in one program. Four high school violin students, along with Moyer’s wife, Carolyn, will assist in three numbers: a concerto movement by Vivaldi, a song called “The Happy Farmer,” and the first movement of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, with two students playing each of the solo parts. The violinists will be Vincent Cao, Cecelia Nightingale, and Amaya Williams, all of Hempfield High School, and Naomi Main of McCaskey High School. The second part of the program will be a retrospective on the 1950s, the era when the first permutation of the present organ was installed. Also in the ’50s, Moyer played a recital at St. John’s when he was 13. On May 12, Moyer will repeat one of the pieces he played at his concert in 1950. This part of the program will open with the Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach and

Fun For All At Marietta Day Marietta Day will take place rain or shine on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The town-wide “flea market” yard sale event is a 40-year-old tradition. There is no admission cost. “The Marietta Day committee has a vision to maintain the original town-wide ‘yard sale’ and also build upon tradition with old-fashioned fair-type carnival games (and) enhanced food offerings including local farmers and growers,” said Bob Heiserman, who has been running Marietta Day for more than 20 years. Market Street will be closed to vehicular traffic for the day as residents and businesses sell their wares and entertain visitors. Food vendors will be set up as well. The Artisans Corner, located near the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta, will feature area artisans and craftspeople. New this year will be several farmers

close with the Prelude and Fugue on the Name Alain by Maurice Duruflé, a piece that made its first appearance in America in 1956. In between those pieces, Moyer will play music that is not standard organ fare. Co-organist at the church, along with Robert Carbaugh, Moyer is professor emeritus of music at Millersville University, where he taught music history and organ for 32 years. He also was parish organist and choirmaster for three Lutheran churches in Lancaster during those years, retiring from service in 2002. He and Carbaugh have both served St. John’s since 2006. The recital is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be accepted to benefit Beth Shalom House, a Christian-based transitional house in Lancaster for mothers who are leaving prison and want to reunite with their children. Stacey Catigano, a deacon-in-training in the Episcopal Church, is a prison chaplain at Lancaster County Prison and is involved with Beth Shalom House. Following the concert, a reception with the musicians will take place in the parish social hall. Light refreshments will be available. For more information, readers may call 717-557-3682.
