Something For Everyone At Spring Fling ood, fun and foliage will be in the spotlight at Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church during the annual Spring Fling. The event will take place at the church, 404 Hellam St., on Saturday, May 21, beginning at 8 a.m. Food options will include coffee and doughnuts, hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, french fries and milkshakes. “We will have tables set up for people who want to eat here,” said Donna Ream, who is co-chairing Spring Fling with Tim Lehman. “People can also take their food to go.” The event will also feature homemade baked goods and candy for sale, along with used books, games and puzzles. “We’ll have a rummage sale, with clothing and accessories,”

F

Ream commented. “We’ll also have a plant sale, featuring indoor and outdoor plants, birdfeeders and other lawn decorations.” Everything for sale at Spring Fling is made or donated by congregation and community members. Children’s activities will be offered, and Studio12, a local dance studio, will present performances at 9 and 11:30 a.m. “We’ll also have an opportunity for people from the community who want to set up a yard sale table,” Ream noted, adding that people can rent a space and also rent a table if necessary. Proceeds from Spring Fling will be used for improvement projects and the church’s general fund. Work needed in the future includes replacing two furnaces and rebuilding the church’s bell tower.

Ream emphasized that Spring Fling is a tradition people look forward to every year. “We always say, ‘Bring your family, bring your neighbors, bring your friends.’ We have something for everybody,” she said. “People like to come to meet up with old friends and to see people they don’t see that often. It’s a really fun day.” Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church is home to Phoebe’s Closet, a community clothing bank, as well as a community food bank. The church holds services on Sundays at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday school. A children’s service is held during the worship service. For more information on Spring Fling, call the church office at 717252-2609. To reserve a space or table for the community yard sale, contact Phil Lehman at 717-252-1856.

especially challenging, he said, because it’s performed as an Elvis tribute. “I watched a lot of videos of Elvis and studied him to get the part just right,” noted Elliott, a ninth-grader at York Catholic High School. Like Katie, he says the show is his favorite musical. “The music is so catchy,” he remarked. “There are so many different styles of music in this show - country, disco, pop, jazz.” For Gerson, playing the title character has prompted him to stretch his acting muscles. “There are very emotional parts in this show, like the song ‘Close Every Door,’ when Joseph is in prison, and then it immediately goes into a very upbeat, fast-paced song, ‘Go, Go, Go Joseph,’” he said. “It’s been challenging to be able to make that emotional switch quickly.”

Katie Pilsner, a senior at Manheim Central High School, plays the Narrator. She noted that the story of the musical is taken from the Bible. “The story is about Joseph and how he gets this fabulous coat that makes his brothers jealous,” she explained. “They ultimately end up selling him into slavery, and Joseph goes through tremendous obstacles, but he eventually overcomes them.” Katie said playing the Narrator is challenging, but fun. “This is my favorite show, and it’s my dream role,” she stated. “I’ve loved this show since I was a kid.” Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, “Joseph” is told entirely in song, which makes it a unique experience for the performers, said Elliott Evans, who portrays the Pharaoh and Jacob. The character of the Pharaoh is

Katie noted that the show features some deep themes that will get audiences thinking. “This show is about family and love and redemption. It’s overcoming everything that’s thrown at you,” she commented. “At one point, the Narrator sings, ‘And it could be you,’ and I think anyone who watches this show or reads the Bible story can put themselves in Joseph’s shoes and can realize that they also can over-

come any obstacles they face.” Overall, Elliott said, audiences can expect to be entertained. “This show is a blast,” he stated. “It’s just a fun show.” Performances of the show will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday both weekends. “May is National Foster Care Month, and we are holding (the event) in honor of that,” explained Kristin Meeks, FUN program supervisor. “It’s an opportunity to possibly recruit families and bring awareness of what we do as an agency.” Headquartered in Muncy, Families United Network was founded in 1996 as a private foster care provider. The agency has multiple locations throughout the state; the Mount Joy office has been in operation for about 20 years. This is the first time FUN Fest is being held since 2019, when it paused for two years due to the pandemic. “We’re really excited to bring this back,” Meeks noted. “If you have kids, it’s a fun day to come out and have some nice fam-

ily time together.” The festivities will feature a bounce house, free food, crafts, prizes and a variety of vendors, including Board and Brush, Paparazzi and Thirty-One Gifts. Information tables will also be set up to showcase the services of FUN. While the event is free, donations will be accepted for the organization’s mission. “Any proceeds we make from this event will be used for our foster parent event for our families, which is also held in May,” said Holly Tanner, resource parent specialist for FUN. Tanner noted that the event has been well-received in the past. “Some families come for half an hour. Some come for two hours,” she said. “There is something for everybody to do, and it’s all free.” Tanner emphasized that the day is all about family - having fun but also promoting the agency’s work. “It’s a nice opportunity for families ... to see we who we are,” she remarked. “We’ve been in the community a long time, but many people don’t know our name. We’re right here in your backyard, and we want people to know about us and how they can make a difference in a child’s life.” She encourages everyone to attend FUN Fest, adding, “Bring your children; bring your neighbors. Get everybody out of the house and come out for a fun day of kidfocused activities.” Vendors are still being accepted for FUN Fest, and people are invited to set up tables of yard sale items. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR), an international charity motorcycle event, will be hosted in York for the third year on Sunday, May 22, joining almost 700 cities and 104 countries worldwide. The DGR, which began in New Zealand in 2012, raises money and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health programs/suicide prevention. The event operates in conjunction with the Movember Foundation. In its history, the event has raised a total of over $26 million. A group of motorcycle riders from York had been participating in the Lancaster Chapter of the DGR for several years, riding together as the White Roses to represent York. Moved by the feeling of community and the power of the event, William Whitney applied to begin hosting the ride in York. On Sunday, May 15, a benefit car and motorcycle show will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Belmont Bean Co., 18 S. Belmont St., York, to raise funds for the ride. More information about the ride, including registration and donation details, can be found at www.gentlemans ride.com. Riding from pg 4 The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts by offering four routes - a 10-mile family ride; a 21mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43-mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. For many years, the event was called the Literacy Ride, but a few years ago, it was renamed. “(The new) name is more indicative of what

we’re trying to do,” said Holm, who noted that this year, Rotary Club members are each sponsoring a rider from Lifecycles. Lifecycles, based in Wrightsville, is an organization that is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18. Lifecycles offers participants a chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring, and bike riding with a faith focus. Thirty Lifecycles participants will take part in the ride. In addition, the club has partnered with The Common Wheel to accept quality, gently used bikes from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day of the ride. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. Holm pointed out that funds have been used locally to aid high school

students with continuing education. He noted that district grants allow a club president to choose a project to fund and that in 2021, that project was the LancasterLebanon Education Fund to support IU13 students who needed learning materials to use at home. Other local organizations that have benefited include Aaron’s Acres, Byrnes Health Education Center, Love INC of Lancaster County, and Off the Streets Lancaster. At a March meeting of the club, a special grant was awarded to aid victims of the war in Ukraine. “We are doing a $5,000 grant to an organization in Budapest, Hungary, to help get money to Ukrainian humanitarian relief,” said Holm. The 2021 event attracted nearly 100 riders. Those who would like to take part this year may register online by Wednesday, June 1, by searching for “Rotary Ride for the Community 2022” at www.active.com. Registration will also be open the day of the event. Questions may be directed to Steve Bareuther at sbareuther@msn.com. Sunrise Rotary welcomes new members.
