5K will benefit Mount Bethel Cemetery
BY CATHY MOLITORISThe second annual Mount Bethel Cemetery Memorial 5K will be held on Saturday, May 27. The walk/run will take place on the grounds of Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike, with proceeds benefiting the historic Mount Bethel Cemetery, located on Locust Street in Columbia.
Race-day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the school’s gym, and the 5K will step off at 8:30 a.m. It will be held rain or shine.
The event is named to honor the holiday it precedes, as well as to memorialize those interred at Mount Bethel Cemetery, explained Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the Mount Bethel Cemetery Board of Directors and a member of the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. She emphasized that the event will feature plenty of parking, medals for winners in multiple brackets and a spectator-friendly course.
BY CATHY MOLITORISEast Prospect will be buzzing with activity on Memorial Day weekend. “We will have lots of people out and about walking around town,” said Jessica Winchester, describing all the events happening on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28. Winchester, a volunteer with East Prospect Community Pride, is organizing a Memorial Day Weekend Vendor Event on May 27 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the East Prospect Municipal Building, 28 W. Maple St. “We are going to have some independent sales vendors, crafters and businesses,” she stated. “We will also be selling baked goods. We’ll have a bunch of vendors inside the building, but we will also have some vendors outside.” Along with vendors, the event will feature hands-on activities from Crawford’s Reptile Encounters.
While the vendor event is going on,
East Prospect Fire Company will hold a chicken barbecue beginning at 11 a.m. It will be located at 13 W. Ridge Ave. Tickets will be available for purchase ahead of time through the “East Prospect Fire Company” Facebook page, or meals may be purchased the day of the event until sold out.
Throughout East Prospect, community yard sales will be happening on May 27 as well, Winchester noted. “There will really be a lot going on in town that day,” she remarked, noting that any residents are invited to set up a yard sale at their home.
She noted that pre-COVID, East Prospect used to hold a vendor event, but this will be the first year it is returning since the start of the pandemic. East Prospect Community Pride is organizing the event. The group of volunteers work together to promote events and activities in
East Prospect, Winchester explained. “All of the community groups in our area try to work together to support each other,” she stated. Throughout the year, East Prospect Community Pride organizes a variety of events, including a car show, a Memorial Day parade, free movie nights, Trunk or Treat, a Veterans Day breakfast and breakfast with Santa. Most of the events have no admission charge, Winchester said. This year’s Memorial Day parade will be held on May 28 beginning at 4 p.m.
“East Prospect Community Pride is just here to build up our community and get everyone together to have enjoyable events with our families and friends,” Winchester stated. “We like to promote our town and everything that’s going on.”
For more information on East Prospect Community Pride, search for the organization on Facebook.
Hohenadel remarked that the course was designed by an avid runner and former cross-country coach who understands the importance of blending a bit of a challenge into a course that a novice will also enjoy. The course includes only a small portion of the hill leading up to Columbia High School, with a mixed-terrain route featuring a scenic view of the Susquehanna River. Due to the terrain, the course does not accommodate wheelchairs.
Golf outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).
GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating
under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the See Golf outing pg 2

Professional timing services will be provided by Pretzel City Sports, and awards will be presented to the overall male and female finishers, along with the male master and female master. The first three male and first three female finishers in 13 age brackets will be awarded race medals as well. Race shirts will be available while supplies last. Hohenadel stated that the event is made possible by the sponsorships of multiple
businesses and organizations, including ColumbiaMiddletown Elks Lodge 1074, Foresters of America 235, Columbia American Legion Post 372, Kleen-Rite Corp. and Nikolaus & Hohenadel. Registration forms and more information may be found at https://mtbethelcemetery.org. For additional information, call 717-681-6768. Organizers request that no cleats and no pets be present on the course.
Program to focus on memorial services
“Planning Your Service,” the first program in the Interfaith End of Life Workshop Series, will take place on Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. at 205 N. Second St., Wrightsville. This program is sponsored by Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, Hope United Methodist Church (UMC), Trinity Lutheran Church and the new community organization Wrightsville for All. The program will be an
open panel discussion intended to help people navigate conversations with loved ones about end-of-life choices regarding memorial services. Elder Lois McCredie, interfaith minister Rev. Sarah Hurley, and Presbyterian pastor Jesse North will lead. The panel will also include Lutheran vicar John Sheaf, UMC pastor Jerry Schmidt, and Shannon Etzweiler from Etzweiler Funeral Home.
local area. For more information, visit www.goodsam services.org.
A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”
Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.
The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the
Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.
“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”
Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epc golfouting.com/register.

Nearly half a million served
BY ANN MEAD ASH“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.
Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that
recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.
Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system perma-
nently. Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.
Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the
delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield, Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg. Most volunteer tasks require about a two-hour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do two-hour shifts but if someone only has an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends.
Readers who are interested in volunteering for the organization may visit www.power packsproject.org/volunteer or call 717-517-9220.
COLUMBIA WATER COMPANY FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING
The Columbia Water Company will be conducting fire hydrant flushing and inspection of the hydrants beginning Sunday, May 21, 2023 and will continue through Friday, June 2, 2023. During the flushing you may notice a decrease in water pressure and the water may become discolored.
Your patience during this period of routine maintenance to the water system will be appreciated.
The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ mission is to do the most good. That includes financial aid for county students seeking to further their educations at college.
Recently, the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps awarded its annual Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf scholarships to 20 seniors from 13 Lancaster County high schools. The students formally accepted their scholarships at a special awards dinner on April 27 at Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.
Recipients and their high schools were Nicole Chen, Penn Manor; Mina Cooper, Dayspring Christian Academy; Savannah Henschel, Warwick; Natalie Klecker, Anchor Christian Academy; Ethan Lin, Hempfield; Kieran McFall, Penn Manor; Caitlyn McGough, Penn Manor; Mercyangelis Morillo, Columbia; Connor Nimmon, Hempfield; Luke Pagilia, Hempfield; Abigail Phillips, Conestoga Valley; Maximillian
Ponton, Penn Manor; Tobias Reiff, Lancaster Mennonite; Heavynn Rodriguez, J.P. McCaskey; Savannah Stauffer, Ephrata; Alana Stoltzfus, Lancaster Mennonite; Hagen Supeck, Lampeter-Strasburg; Lily Troutman, Elizabethtown; Avante Webb, J.P. McCaskey; and Hanna Weller, Cocalico. Each student received $2,000 in scholarship monies.
“Our mission is to help people in need,” said Shady Boules, the operations and development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”
To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demonstrate a financial need. After the students submit a 500word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.
“We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”
Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.
“We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be
able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”
The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.
“The Salvation Army is here for everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”

Flashfood and Giant reduce food waste
In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts. Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million pounds of food from landfills.
As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10
million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.
The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy

Jessica is a senior at Eastern York High School and plans to attend Wake Forest University this fall to study biology. Jessica plays soccer and is involved with Student Council, Interact Club, NHS and yearbook club.
The First Capital FCU scholarship program was renamed the Dennis Flickinger Honorable Scholarship Program in 2016 to honor former CEO Dennis Flickinger, who retired in 2015. Flickinger advocated for financial education in schools and worked to promote credit unions as a choice for students’ financial futures.

Students honored in Recycled Art Contest
To promote recycling and celebrate Earth Day on April 22, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) sponsored a Recycled Art Contest for York County high school students. Participating schools included Christian School of York, Dallastown Area High School, Eastern York High School, Northern York County High School, Red Land High School, William Penn Senior High School, York Catholic High School, York Country Day School, and York Suburban High School. Thirtysix students participated. Contest judging and a public reception were held at the York County Agricultural and Industrial Museum on April 20. Each
student winner received an art supply gift certificate, and his or her school’s art department was also granted an art supply gift certificate in the same amount.
First place was awarded to “A Tea Party in Excess” created by Maxwell McCormick of Dallastown Area High School. In second place was “Plastic Predator” created by Tracy McCoy of Eastern York High School. Third place went to “A Light in the Darkness” created by Wren Eberly of Eastern York High School. Prizes were awarded based on artistic expression, use of recycled materials, and level of technique.
