Golden Knights Top York Suburban in Districts by Eric Pyles

The saying goes that revenge is a dish best served cold but for the Eastern York boy’s lacrosse team it is a dish best served in the playoffs. With a 14-13 victory over York Suburban in a District 3-2A clash on May 14th the Golden Knights avenged their 16-10 regular season loss while keeping their season alive for at least one more game. Rylan Emlet accounted for the winning goal against the Trojans, picking up his second of the game with three minutes remaining in regulation. Kade Wiley kept Suburban at bay for those final minutes to finish with a five save victory. Bryce Henise, fresh off picking up First Team YAIAA honors as a midfielder, led the way with five goals and three assists. Jake Crumling tacked on a hat trick while Cayden Michael was the final multigoal scorer, adding an assist to his two goals. Gavin Evans and Gage Barton both picked up single goals but Evans enjoyed dishing out four Staff photo Eastern’s Cadeyn Michael advances the ball past York assists on top of the score. the rest of the YAIAA for the league’s championship meet at Dallastown on May 10th. Seven different Golden Knights performed well enough to take home a medal with Demonte Martin and Emily Smith enjoying a double-dip. Martin did his work in the hurdle events highlighted by a gold medal run in the 110H. He captured first with a time of 14.67 which gave him the third seed at the District 3-3A meet. Martin finished fourth in the event at the YAIAA Championships with a time of 41.54. The senior just missed another podium finish, settling for ninth in the high jump. He cleared 5-10, same as the seventh and eighth place finishers but was shuffled to ninth after tiebreakers were sorted out. Smith’s medal efforts came in the throws with her best finish coming in the javelin where her 97-10 was the sixth best throw of the day. She added an eighth-place throw of 96-0 in the discus. Olivia McLain also qualified for the District 3 Championship meet

after picking up a bronze medal in the 3200m with an 11:25.36. Dylan Zurin, Drake Brown and Weston McLain accounted for the final three solo medals for the Golden Knights while the 3200m relay team picked up a fourth-place medal with a time of 8:40.04. Zurin competed in the long jump where he finished seventh with a leap of 19-4. Brown picked up a sixth-place medal with a toss of 129-7 in the discus while Weston McLain added an eighth-place throw of 135-5 in the javelin. BASEBALL The baseball team finished their 2019 regular season with a May 10th visit to New Oxford where they dropped a 2-0 final to the Colonials. The loss put Eastern at 12-7 on the year, good enough for ninth in the final District 3-4A rakings earning the Golden Knights a trip to Elliotsburg for a first-round battle with West Perry. Drew Dellinger reached his pitch limit in the fourth inning but he did surrender both Colonial runs handing him the loss. Only one of those runs

was earned but Dellinger did issue five free passes with only four strikeouts. Emmit Silar and Quinton McNew finished the final two innings with Silar covering one and two-third of that. McNew’s one-third of an inning included just one pitch. Silar, Dellinger and Dyson Renn had one single each to account for the Golden Knight offense. GIRLS’ LACROSSE With all credit to Yogi Berra, the phrase ‘Déjà vu all over again’ perfectly fits the ending to Eastern York girl’s lacrosse team’s season. The Lady Golden Knights dropped this year’s District 3-2A opening round contest to the same foe that ended their 2018 season, Lancaster Country Day. In fact, the game even took place on the same field, Crusader Stadium, with the only difference being the final. Last year Eastern dropped a 13-7, rain delayed final, while this year saw the Lady Cougars post a 17-12 victory. Addy Malone finished her first

She also earned comidfielder of the year honors in the YAIAA along with Kennard-Dale’s Megan Halczuck. Ellie Lippy and Victoria Zerbe settled for just a three-goal hat trick. Kendall Raver was the final player with a multigoal game, finishing with two while Haley Holtzinger, who earned a first team all-YAIAA defensive nod, covered the last of the offense with one

goal. Summer Breen finished the loss with six saves. Annette Kurnik joined Malone and Holtzinger on the all-YAIAA team as Honorable Mention selections. The Lady Golden Knights entered the postseason on a high note after knocking off Northern York by a 10-7 final on May 8th. Malone nearly outscored the Lady Polar Bears by herself, finishing with seven of Eastern’s 10 goals. Zerbe, Lippy and Holtzinger rounded out the scoring

with one goal each. Breen earned the win with 10 saves. SOFTBALL The Eastern York softball team finds themselves headed in the wrong direction as the regular season turns into the postseason. The Lady Golden Knights find themselves in the middle of a three-game slide that covers their final two regular season games as well as their initial postseason game of 2019. That postseason game was a 4-3

defeat to Delone Catholic in the YAIAA semifinals on May 15th. Eastern scored all three of their runs in the top of the first, highlighted by Katie Lehman’s one out double that made it 2-0. Gillian Toomey followed a few batters later with a bases loaded walk to push the third and final run across. Leber, who took the loss for her work on the mound, accounted for one of Eastern York’s four hits with Kelsey Felix and Haidyn Shaffer picking up the remaining two. Leber recorded

nine punch outs and just one walk but Delone was able to collect nine hits on their way to four runs. Eastern York’s regular season finale went down on May 11th as a 9-5 loss to Greencastle-Antrim. Leber covered all seven innings in the circle but only three of the Lady Blue Devils runs were earned as two Lady Golden Knight errors led to six unearned runs. Leber finished with just one walk to go with 10 strikeouts. She also provided the pop at the plate with her only

hit coming as a fifth inning blast that made it a 9-3 game. Amber Forry put Eastern’s initial run on the board an inning earlier with an RBI single while Shaffer ripped a two-run triple in the sixth to account for the last of the Eastern York offense. Up next for Eastern is a District 34A match-up with Bishop McDevitt. The sixth seeded Lady Golden Knights earned a first-round bye and will battle the third seeded Lady Crusaders on May 23rd in a quarterfinal tilt.

participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New

Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years.

Alan Ruby (foreground) and Barry Lynch were among dozens of competitors in the horseshoes competition during the Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10. More than 1,000 Lancaster County residents age 55 and up participated in the weeklong event. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices

horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit www.LancSeniorGames.org.

Mountville VFW To Host Memorial Day Parade By Dayna M. Reidenouer

When discussing the Mountville VFW Memorial Day Parade recently, Reese-Hall Mountville VFW Post 8757 commander Bob Froelich was not sure at first if the parade that will be held on Saturday, May 25, should bear his organization’s name. Parade coordinator Beth Hess, however, insisted that the name is correct. “You fund it. You make sure it happens, and it’s to remember the veterans,” Hess pointed out to Froelich. At that, Froelich agreed, noting that the VFW honor guard will lead the parade

The parade will travel down College and along Main Street, concluding at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. Following the honor guard will be military veterans and members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Transportation will be provided for those who need it by the Rivertowne Trolley. Additional music will be provided by Hempfield High School Marching Knights, Dixieland Express, Summit Hill Bluegrass Band, Marchmasters, Bainbridge Band, and the Kracker Beez. The parade will also include local businesses, Scout troops, state and local government officials, veterans from St. Anne’s Retirement Community, a youth sports organization, Lancaster Barnstormers mascot Cylo, Mountville Lions Club, antique vehicles, and farmthemed businesses that will throw candy to children. The

Mountville Fire Company will bring up the rear. Following the parade, a ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Mountville Cemetery on Hill Street. The VFW honor guard will perform a three-volley salute, taps will be played on trumpet, and the Marchmasters and a bagpiper will share musical selections. Rep. Brett Miller will speak on what Memorial Day means to him. Hess noted that Miller and his family have attended the ceremony for many years, and she is happy he agreed to speak. Then, all the attendees will receive carnations to put on the graves of veterans who are buried in the cemetery. Last year was the first time the organizers opted to have attendees participate rather than have Scout troops lay the flowers. See Mountville VFW pg 7

Maytown from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 of Maytown will hold its 57th annual Antique, Art, Craft, and Collectible Show on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place in the Maytown Square and on East High Street, preceding the annual Maytown Memorial Day Parade at 4 p.m. Organizer and Auxiliary member Sara Gutshall explained that the antique show was established by the late Marilyn Fink, former Auxiliary president, in 1959. In its early years, the event had approximately a dozen vendors. Gutshall said the show continued growing through the years and now includes 50 or more vendors who travel from around Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland to take part in the event. Items for sale will include handmade soap, candles, bird feeders, yarn, lawn art, oils, teas, spices, books, jewelry, glass, pottery, outdoor furniture, bamboo plants, crystals and gemstones, antiques, and more. Broommaking and blacksmithing demonstrations will also take place. Traditional fair food will be available to purchase, including sausage

sandwiches, funnel cakes, fried sandwich cookies, fried rice and noodles, smoothies, ice cream, and more. Gutshall emphasized that the event is a fundraiser to support veterans - something near and dear to her own heart as she had three brothers and numerous uncles and nephews who served in the military. “I can’t give up on our veterans,” remarked Gutshall. “And I’m dedicated to Maytown because I was born here.” The Auxiliary - which Gutshall noted is 65 members strong - supports veterans at the Lebanon, Coatesville, and Southeastern VA hospitals in various capacities, including sending monetary donations, clothing, and other supplies as needed. Auxiliary members crochet blankets for veterans at Rheems Nursing Home and Paramount Senior Living. Members also deliver care packages to local veterans who are ill or otherwise in need. The parade will stage on North King Street beginning at 3 p.m., with the procession kicking off promptly at 4 p.m. This year’s grand marshal will be James Embly, a longtime resident of Maytown. The Maytown Memorial Day Parade Committee is encouraging community groups, family units, and individuals not currently signed up to participate in the parade to consider being part of this year’s parade. For instance, children in the neighborhood could form a bicycle group,

decorate their bikes, and ride in the parade as a unit. All groups must register in advance, and any interested groups or individuals may do so by emailing mrguinivan@comcast.net. Prior to the start of the parade, ceremonies will be held at each of the cemeteries in Maytown. Beginning at 3 p.m., members of the local Girl Scouts and any other school-age children who would like to participate will decorate the graves of veterans buried in the cemetery at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. “Everyone was touched because they could put them on graves of people they knew,” Hess commented. “It’s more personal.” To prepare for Memorial Day, the members of the Mountville VFW plan to place 72 dozen flags on veterans’ graves in and around the borough. In addition to honoring the dead, the Mountville VFW is dedicated to supporting the living. In 2018, the VFW distributed more than $60,000 to meet the needs of individuals and organizations. The post is preparing for another charitable contribution that will take place on Wednesday, June 12, when it will serve as a dinner stop for participants in the PA Hero Walk event. As part of the walk, people hike from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to raise money to support wounded veterans. Both the VFW and the auxiliary will present checks to the PA Hero Walk.

York County Libraries will make a trade with library members who have late fees through its Food for Fines program. Through Friday, May 31, York County Libraries will reduce a library cardholder’s late fees by one dollar for each nonperishable item the cardholder donates at one of the libraries. The food drive provides members with a way to erase their late fees and help feed hungry community members at the same time. Food collected during the month will be distributed to area food banks and organizations across York County. All food donations should be nonperishable items in cans, boxes, bags, or pouches. In the past, individuals have donated items such as cereal, soup, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, juice, peanut butter, and canned meats like tuna, chicken, and salmon that do not require refrigeration prior to opening. The libraries will not accept out-of-date food or dented or rusted cans. The program applies to late fees only and does not cover items that have been lost. Food will be collected at multiple locations and donated to the local food pantries indicated. Donation sites

More than 500 seniors from across York County are expected to come together for the 18th annual York County Senior Games. The York County Senior Games, which began in 2002 as a one-day program featuring about 20 events, now take place over five days and offer participants the chance to test their skills in 48 events. The goal is to promote healthy lifestyles and fitness for York County men and women who are age 50 and older as of Tuesday, Dec. 31. Registration is open for this year’s games, which will take place from Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 21. Events will include annual favorites such as cornhole, horseshoes, shuffleboard, throws, basketball hot shots, pinochle, Wii bowling, and more. The triathlon will return for the seventh year. Pickleball will be a new event for 2019.

There is a registration fee for an unlimited number of events. All registrations must be postmarked by the Friday, June 7, registration deadline. Registrations should be received as early as possible because of limited openings in some events. The registration fee is nonrefundable. For some events, there are additional fees, payable at the event site. Volunteers are also sought to help support the games. All volunteers must be at least age 14, and groups, such as community groups, youth groups, Scout troops, organizations, and businesses, may sign up. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with registration, keeping score, providing support for the event coordinators, picking up and delivering supplies and equipment, helping at events, and restocking supplies. To learn more about volunteer opportunities,

readers may contact 717-771-9001 or aging@yorkcountypa.gov. The Senior Games are organized by the York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) in conjunction with the Senior Games Planning Committee, which is made up of community and business volunteers. Expenses for the games are entirely underwritten by corporate sponsors, private donations, and participant entry fees. Event coordinators reserve the right to consolidate age divisions for competition based on insufficient entries and can modify event rules and formats or cancel events. Medals will be awarded within each age group. Some events are open to men and women separately. Age groups are 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84, 85 to 89, and 90 and up. Event coordinators may

Heritage Day from pg 1 across the parking lot from Wrightsville Elementary, on the site of the first church in Wrightsville. Tours will be held at 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m. According to Young, the ground was donated to the town by Susanna Wright Houston, a descendent of the town’s founder, John Wright. Lisa Burk, co-historian of HWI, who directed the cemetery restoration project in 2017, will conduct tours and provide fascinating historic anecdotes. The Emigsville Band will provide pops music throughout the day, and Mike Thomas will amaze the crowd with magic tricks. Other entertainment highlights will include Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot, as well as Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge, a petting zoo, a bounce house, fire trucks, face painting, a bicycle obstacle course, and an old-fashioned peanut scramble. Plus, HWI will offer a Heritage Day Scavenger Hunt for those with a competitive spirit. Participants may pick up a form at the HWI booth upon arriving and carry it with them to complete as they wander through the festivities. All participants who complete the form will be entered into a drawing to win two free tickets to HWI’s new Stories by Lantern Light Ghost Tour this fall. In addition, HWI will have information available about a new summer camp for children that will combine history with the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) process. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
