OnSaturday, June 3, the Triangle of Treasures is coming to Columbia. The festivities will include events and activities at three locations in town. Holy Trinity Catholic Church will hold an Art, Craft and Yard Sale at Janson Park, 650 Cherry St., Columbia. CBAA will host a yard sale and chicken barbecue at Glatfelter Memorial Field, 1249 Lancaster Ave.,

and Mixed Medley will host a Craft/Vendor/Rummage Sale at Columbia Animal Shelter, 265 S. 10th St. All three events will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“When we learned that the Columbia Animal Shelter and CBAA also had events planned, our initial thought was to have one large event, but because of some circumstances out of our control, we realized that wouldn’t be able to happen,” said Janelle Barninger,

committee member of the Saint Matthew Ministry at Holy Trinity. “So, the next-best idea was to advertise all three events together. The hope is that when the event day comes, the community will visit all three locations and see what all the vendors coming into our small town have to offer.”

At Holy Trinity’s event, there will be a variety of items for sale, many of which are handmade by the vendors. Items will include home

decor, jewelry, quilts, books, handmade animal treats and toys, skin care products, candles and tie-dyed shirts. Face painting will be offered, and three food trucks will be onsite. Aloha Snow will serve snow cones and shaved ice, On My Grind Coffee will provide coffee and drinks and Himes Family Concessions will sell fried food. Proceeds from the event will benefit Holy Trinity Church and will be used for maintenance or repairs as needed.

“Columbia is a very patriotic town,” said Kevin Kraft, who is organizing the Columbia Memorial Day ceremony and parade with Bob Herman. “It has been a tradition to have a Memorial Day parade in Columbia since World War II. At one point, Columbia had the largest Memorial Day parade in the county.”

This year’s ceremony and parade will take place on Sunday, May 28. From noon to 1 p.m., the Bainbridge Band will perform a concert in the gazebo in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St. At 1 p.m., the ceremony will begin at the gazebo. The keynote speaker will be Judge Leonard G. Brown III. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Brown served as a combat engineer officer in Alaska. After completing law school, he transferred to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in the Army Reserves, from which he retired after 28 years of service. He currently serves as a trial judge in the Second Judicial District of Pennsylvania’s Court of Common Pleas, which encompasses Lancaster.

At 2:30 p.m., the parade will step off from 10th and Manor streets. It will feature four divisions and will include participation from a variety of service organizations based in Columbia.

“We will have Red Rose VFW Post 2435, the American Legion, the AMVETS, the Catholic War Vets and the 11-11-11 Club,” Kraft said. The parade typically includes bands, first responders and community groups such as Scout troops. Robert “Bob” Smith, chairman of the Hometown Heroes banner project, will be the grand marshal. The parade route will end at Sixth and Locust streets.

Kraft noted that the parade always draws a good crowd. “If you’re patriotic, and you want to honor the people who served, come out for the ceremony and the parade,” he remarked. “We encourage people to come out and mark a day that represents a time to memorialize all the wars and all those who fought and died for our country. That’s what this day is all about.”

Resident writes book about illness, service dog

May 30 is World Multiple Sclerosis Day. Joan Patterson, a local resident living with multiple sclerosis, has written a book about her experiences with this incurable disease and her relationship with her service dog, Faith.

Patterson’s book, a compilation of short narratives, is titled “A Matter of Faith: Surviving Life’s Crises With Four Wheels, Four Paws, and a Loving God.” When multiple sclerosis entered Patterson’s life, she faltered in her joy, her faith, and the confidence to continue being an asset to society. Her relationship with her service dog, Faith, restored her independence and strengthened her relationship with God.

She noted that she wrote “A

Matter of Faith” not only to tell the story of her relationship with Faith, but also for those who are frustrated with life and their current relationship with God.

Patterson holds an associate degree in Bible and a Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies of business and education. She taught in Christian schools for seven years and a business school for three years. Since partnering with Faith, she has represented Canine Partners for Life at various venues.

Patterson is available to speak about her book, her experiences living with multiple sclerosis, and her service dog. For more information, contact Patterson at 717-870-8999 or Joan@JoanPatterson.org.

CBAA’s event will spotlight a variety of items for sale as well from community members. A chicken barbecue will feature a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter. Tickets for the barbecue are available through any CBAA baseball or T-ball player or by messaging CBAA’s Facebook page. Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit CBAA, which offers youth sports, and proceeds from the chicken barbecue will benefit the spring sports banquet, as well as general CBAA operations, said Crystal Aston, who is on the CBAA fundraising committee with Jane Murray and Laraine Gray.

At Columbia Animal Shelter, various artisans will be selling items in genres including metal, art, pottery, culinary and woodworking. Nonprofits and local businesses

will have tables, and yard sale items will be available as well, said Shannon Hadaway, who co-owns Mixed Medley, a discount store, with Kimberly Waltman. “I really believe there will be something for everyone,” Hadaway stated. “There will be small games, food and a large variety of items you may not see at ‘just’ a yard sale.”

Hadaway encourages people to attend all three events.

“I really liked the idea of it becoming a community event to bring awareness that we all had the same intentions of wanting to help a worthy cause that is right here in our town and to promote the gathering of all different local people and businesses to have a day to share,” she noted. Mulberry Art Studios to present exhibit

JJ Roach, who first debuted his artworks in a solo show at Mulberry Art Studios two years ago at age 17, will return to the studio in June to showcase his newest collection of art, titled “Surreal Detail.” The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artworks at a First Friday opening reception on June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios, located at 21 N. Mulberry St. in downtown Lancaster, offers free parking in a private lot.

After his first art expo at Mulberry Art Studios, he displayed his creations at Night of Entrepreneurs in Harrisburg and at Hershey Gardens in Hershey. His artworks were also on exhibit at the Pennsyl-

vania Capitol last July. Most recently, his work “Celestial Dreams” won first place at “Art of the State,” a juried exhibition held at the State Musuem of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.

Revealing the roots of a family tree

For many people, family trees and historical records of ancestors provide a sense of connection to relatives and the journey their family has taken over decades. Despite the accessibility of information in the modern age, burial records and ancestral documents can prove to be elusive. Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer an Intro to Cemetery Research class to assist those searching for answers to questions posed in their family story.

The class will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and it will be taught by local historian and genealogist James Landis. Landis will begin the course at the Mennonite Life library, where he will discuss

a variety of resources that researchers can use in their efforts. “A lot of people don’t realize that the county has records of destitute veterans - federal documents that may be relevant to a cemetery but are not always readily available,” Landis said.

Landis will discuss how to access burial records and cover a broad spectrum of methods for research. After discussion at the library, the class will visit a local cemetery, where Landis will provide a demonstration on how to photograph tombstones and the best practices for investigating a family member’s resting place. “I want this course to give people a feel for what they’re going to encounter when going to cemeteries,” Landis said. “It’s such a diverse subject; there

really isn’t one single approach.”

In his class, Landis will also discuss the benefits and disadvantages of conducting research online. Although there is a plethora of websites that offer information on burial sites, Landis said they are often incomplete and do not include valuable data that one might find when exploring in person. While a website might list a family member who is buried in a specific location, it likely won’t show a connection to relatives with a different surname who are buried nearby. Landis also noted that many resources for field research were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; several historical societies were unable to remain open, driving genealogists to rely on the internet for information.

for nearly 50 years, having become interested in ancestral research at a young age. At the age of 14, Landis saw a Revolutionary War re-enactment and was inspired to find information on his relatives who served in the war. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were all members of the Lancaster County Historical Society, and Landis has been involved with Mennonite Life since 1995. “In my years of research, my biggest sense of accomplishment was standing at the burial site of my ancestor and being able to claim them,” Landis said. “You need to use a good bit of shoe leather, but if you do, you will be rewarded.”
