Calling All Art Lovers BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“‘Collaborate’ is one of my favorite words,” said Alison Liebgott, operator and manager of Switchboard Studios & Gallery in Columbia. She’s not kidding. Thanks to her passion for the arts, she’s opened a space for “artists to connect, create and collaborate.” It’s located on the second floor of Columbia Kettle Works, 40 N. Third St., and it will celebrate its grand opening on Fourth Friday,

May 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. “We’ll be having a gallery exhibit, featuring figure drawing pieces from the figure drawing sessions I hold every Thursday,” Liebgott stated. “There will be a mix of local professionals and some names people will be familiar with, along with a few amateurs as well. I’m trying to give all of our artists an opportunity for their work to be seen and displayed in a gallery setting.” See Art pg 2

Inviting the public to an art, craft and yard sale are Betty Mahan (left) and Jeanmarie Nobile.

Promoting Columbia With Arts, Crafts And More food, including baked goods and pulled pork sandwiches. Tickets will be available to purchase for a cash giveaway as well. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s general fund, Mahan said. “The money will go toward various projects and needs of the church,” she explained. The decision to hold the event in Janson Park was a deliberate effort to draw attention to a space that has a history of being a vibrant area in Columbia, she noted. “It’s a really nice space, with plenty of shade, and there is a little play area for the kids,” she said. “It’s a perfect place for this.” The event will be held rain or shine, and Nobile invites everyone to attend. “It’s going to be a fun day to focus on the camaraderie of the town and promote Columbia,” she remarked. Parking will be available in the lot at Holy Trinity, 409 Cherry St. Spaces are still available for vendors to rent. For more information, call the church office at 717-684-2711.

Switchboard Studios & Gallery will hold a grand opening on Friday, May 27.

Marking Memorial Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Columbia will put the spotlight on patriotism when Memorial Day festivities are held on Sunday, May 29. The activities will kick off with a patriotic concert by the Bainbridge Band in the gazebo in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St. The concert will run from noon to 1 p.m. Following the concert, a Memorial Day ceremony will be held, featuring master of ceremonies Kevin Kraft. Jeffrey G. Butch will be the main speaker. Butch served two tours of duty as a combat Marine during the Vietnam War before a See Memorial pg 3

“Come out and enjoy the day and see what we have to offer,” said Betty Mahan, encouraging people to attend an art, craft and yard sale hosted by Holy Trinity Catholic Church. “You’ll be surprised to see everything we have.” The event will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Janson Park, Sixth and Cherry streets, Columbia. This is the second year for the event, which originated during the pandemic. “We couldn’t do our traditional fastnacht sale last year, so we formed the St. Matthew’s Ministry committee to come up with other ideas to raise money for the church,” explained Jeanmarie Nobile, who, along with Mahan, is one of the committee members. The fastnacht sale returned this year, but last year’s inaugural art, craft and yard sale was so successful, the church members decided to do it again this year. “We got lots of great feedback on last year’s event, and everybody

seemed to have a really good time,” Nobile noted. This year’s event has expanded in size, she said, adding that there will be about 50 vendors at the park. “We have people who make jewelry, someone who makes recycled aluminum can art and someone who makes clay figures,” she commented. She highlighted two unique vendors - Aingeal’s Burp Cloths, which donates all of its proceeds from its handmade items to help fund medical units for stillborn babies - and Virgin Iron Blacksmithing, which creates hand-forged items. “Some of the merchants in town have tables, and a lot of the organizations in our parish are participating,” Nobile said. The Columbia Public Library will have an area set up outside just down the block from the park, Mahan remarked. “The day is a coordinated community effort,” she said. Along with crafters, the event will feature yard sale tables and a variety of food stands, including shaved ice. The church will also be selling

Switchboard also features nine resident artists, all of whom have been invited to participate in the grand opening. “They can be in their spaces, working on their art and people can come in and talk to them about their work,” Liebgott explained. “I’m probably going to be painting the walls inside my space. That’s my favorite thing to do - work while I talk to people about my art.” The grand opening will also feature aerial yoga performances by The Inversion Company and a variety of vendors, including 328designs, which makes pieces from craft beer bottle caps. The Merchants Association of Columbia will be on hand as well for a ribbon cutting ceremony during the evening. Liebgott opened the new studio after operating Miss Alison’s Studio for three years in Columbia. The owner of Columbia Kettle Works approached her about creating a gallery and studio space on the second floor. “I named it ‘Switchboard,’ because it used to be the old United Telephone Company when the building was first built,” Liebgott explained. “The history here in town is a huge part of Columbia, and I’ve always loved that.” She’s planning on designing the space to reflect the building’s past, including mounting old telephone poles on the walls, draping dead wires across the ceiling and installing a switchboard box that will connect each of the artists.

Along with her grand opening, Liebgott has several events planned for upcoming months. She holds a poetry slam every second Friday, featuring a collaboration with Word Hive, a Columbia-based poetry society, and she offers yoga classes on Wednesdays. This summer, she’ll hold several kids’ camps. “We’ll have Art Adventure programs,” she said. “The kids will spend the morning with me for some art history lessons and local adventures like a walking tour with the historical society, and then they’ll spend the afternoon with different artists. … They’ll get to work in different mediums.” She’ll also host weeklong yoga camps for kids. of the parade will be Kim Heindel, a lance corporal in the Marines. Herman noted that the Columbia Memorial Day parade committee is spearheaded by Kevin Kraft of Kraft Funeral Home, who coordinated the parade in honor of his father, Clyde, an active member of the Columbia community. “People who come to the parade can expect to see a very patriotic event,” Kevin said. “It’s very mili-

tary-oriented.” He also noted that each division will display a Ukrainian flag in support of the war effort in that country. Herman emphasized that the parade is a nice way to honor veterans while also bolstering community spirit. “It’s a uniquely Columbia event,” he said. “It’s all about Columbia and the service organizations we have here. It’s a group effort to do a nice community event.” All-Natural Angus Burgers

Recycled Art Winners Posted To promote recycling and celebrate Earth Day on April 22, the York County Solid Waste Authority sponsored a Recycled Art Contest for York County High School students, and 17 students participated. Contest judging and a public reception were held on April 21. First place was awarded to “Unfiltered,” created by Bella Leonard of Eastern York High School. In second place was “Earth Tech,” created by Hailey Kyle of Central York High School. Third place went to “Litterbug,” created by Iris Edmunds of Northern York County High School. Prizes were awarded based on artistic expression, use of recycled materials, and level of technique. All student winners received an art supply gift certificate, and their school’s art department was also granted an art supply gift certificate in the same amount.
