Buckle Up, Buttercup BY CATHY MOLITORIS
A team of students at Columbia High School recently won a contest sponsored by State Farm and The Center for Traffic Safety to design a billboard promoting safe driving. Their winning design in the No Excuses Youth Traffic Safety Billboard Design Contest encourages drivers to “Buckle Up Buttercup” with a message
that “Seatbelts = Safety.” Advised by Jere A. Hill, the team was comprised of Mackenzie Burke, Ethan Schmitt and Stephen Huang. The design features a teddy bear buckled into its seat next to a red heart containing the billboard’s message. The billboard is located off of Route 30 in Lancaster, near the Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham, 2045 Lincoln Highway East. See Billboard pg 5

rightsville is full of history, and the town celebrates its past at two museums operated under the Historic Wrightsville umbrella. The Wrightsville Historical Museum, 309 Locust St., and the Burning of the Bridge Diorama, 124 Hellam St., recently reopened after being closed during the pandemic. “Any Civil War buff will be inter-
W
ested in Wrightsville’s participation in the Civil War,” said Anne Kostas, a board member of Historic Wrightsville, “but anyone who is curious about Wrightsville’s history would enjoy these sites.” The Wrightsville Historical Museum is currently featuring “The Families of Wrightsville,” which showcases memorabilia donated to or purchased by the museum. “We have worked on this display for over a year, sorting items from five representative families,”

noted co-historian, Lisa Burk. “Items from local businesses, family Bibles, pictures, furniture and other memorabilia make for a fascinating trip back in time in and around Wrightsville.” On select Sunday afternoons, the museum will also host Kids Klub, led by kindergarten teacher Jeremy Young, as well as Memories and Munchies, hosted by Mary Ellen Kasian. “The programs are offered for elementary-school-age children once a month,” Kostas said.
Heather Lindsey will be the first one to tell you her life hasn’t been easy, but instead of wallowing in self-pity, she is working hard to help others. “I have a heart for women,” she stated. “I’ve had a hard life, a hard upbringing. You name it, I’ve been through it. But, one day, God laid this idea on my heart.” That idea was to create 4C, a women’s ministry that meets in Columbia and Manheim.

Contemporary voices and diverse stories will take the spotlight in a series of staged readings to be held at Susquehanna Stage. “The Undercurrent” will feature four readings and will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, with “Tigers Be Still.” “We wanted to find a way to highlight some of these more contemporary pieces of theater, titles you don’t necessarily see in other theaters’ mainstage shows,” explained Asher Johnson, who is the producer of the series and the director of “Tigers Be Still.” “We wanted to create an atmosphere not only for theater lovers, but also for educators and people in the communi-

ty to see stories on stage that reflect the people in our community.” “Tigers Be Still” features a cast of four and focuses on a young woman, Sherry, who is finding her footing in a new job while moving back into her childhood home with her mother and sister. “It’s a great show,” said Liz Checchia, who plays the sister, Grace. “There are beautiful moments within this very comedic show. … It’s very well written, and there are jokes and lots of laughs, but then out of nowhere, these beautiful, dramatic moments happen.” Bob Checchia, who plays Joe, Sherry’s boss, said the show highlights some unusual characters. “The timing and rhythm of this show keeps it flowing with short scenes and dialogue that is quick and fast,” he noted. “There is a quirkiness to the characters.” And, Johnson added, “While everything is happening with the characters in the show, there is a tiger on the loose during all of this.” He said although the show is a staged reading, audiences should expect a fully formed performance. “The only difference is the actors are going to be holding their scripts in their hands,” he explained. “I didn’t require them to memorize their lines, but there will be lighting cues, sound cues, costumes, blocking, all the things you’d expect to see on stage.” Each performance in “The Undercurrent” will also include a partnership with local organizations or theater companies that reflect the values of each play. “Tigers Be Still” focuses on mental health, and the show will feature a question-andanswer session afterward with members of WellSpan Philhaven. Although the performance is free, donations will be accepted for the organization as well. Additional plays in the stagedreading series are “Pipeline” on Saturday, July 10; “Native Gardens” on Saturday, Aug. 21; and “Blackbird” on Saturday, Nov. 6. Shows will be performed on the theater’s Gallery Stage. Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta. For more information, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

Chamber Of Commerce Relocates To Wrightsville The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) recently relocated from Linden Street in Columbia to a space within the John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville, and the new location will help the Chamber continue to serve the community even more effectively, said Rachel Stebbins, executive director. The new site, located at 234 N. Front St., held a grand opening on May 4 and is an ideal location, she noted. “While it is undeniable that the building right off of Route 30 was very visible, guests had to want to come to the Chamber or Visitor Center specifically. There was no foot traffic,” Stebbins noted. “At (John Wright Restaurant), we have something of a captive audience for our visitor’s area in that thousands of guests come through the building each week.” The new location features an office space, two TVs highlighting area businesses and events, and a space for promoting local attractions and gift items. Several factors prompted the Chamber’s move, Stebbins noted, including the inability to hold fundraisers in 2020 due to the pandemic. Former executive director Beverly Shank and the board had to take a hard look at the viability of the space in Columbia, which had seen a drastic reduction in visitors. “It really came
down to the building being used mostly as a very expensive rest stop and oversized office for one to three staff,” Stebbins explained. “Financially, that just didn’t make sense.” The board considered several options for the Chamber’s new space and also asked for input from Chamber members, but this didn’t produce any viable choices, she said. Then the Chamber learned that the owner of the gift shop that had been renting the space at John Wright Restaurant was moving, and as Stebbins put it, “It all just clicked.” SVCC serves Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville boroughs and the surrounding areas, and the new space will allow the Chamber to continue support of the community as well as to add some new programs. “Our goal is to strengthen the business environment in the boroughs by being a resource for information and education, providing networking opportunities and helping to promote businesses and their events,” said Stebbins, who became executive director in January. “We are working to build educational breakfasts, networking opportunities and make more inperson visits around the three boroughs to get to know businesses and what they want from SVCC.” The visitor’s area of the Chamber’s office is open whenever the restaurant is open, and although
Stebbins is the only full-time staff member for the Chamber, she emphasized that her schedule is flexible to meet the needs of businesses and organizations. She added that the move to York County doesn’t mean the Chamber is changing its focus. “The Chamber
is doing our best to support all three boroughs,” she stated. “Our physical location has to be somewhere, but I have a car, a driver’s license and the desire to go meet with owners and managers and find out how we can work together. … We’re here to listen and help everyone.”

very proud of them.” For their win, each team member received $100, and Columbia High School earned a $1,000 grant. Linn emphasized that focusing on safe driving for teens is paramount in Pennsylvania, where teen drivers have accounted for 22% of all crashes in Lancaster County in the last five years. Teen drivers were also the cause of 34 fatalities. “Based on crash data, the location of the billboard was selected due to the fact this in a high incident area for crashes involving teen drivers,” she stated. The billboard design contest has been a project of The Center for Traffic Safety for about 10 years, Linn noted, adding, “We offer this billboard in hopes that this peer-topeer education resonates with teens. Who else better to learn from than your peers?”

History from pg 1 The building that houses the historical museum was built in 1871 and was the home of John and Mary Redman during the mid-20th century. Upon the death of the Redman daughters, the family donated the house to Historic Wrightsville, which had been looking for a home for its museum. Historic Wrightsville also operates the Burning of the Bridge Diorama, which is located in a building that formerly housed a post office and barber shop. “The diorama is a model that gives a visual of Wrightsville in 1863, the advancing Confederate troops, and the eventual burning of the bridge, which prevented Gen. Gordon from moving toward Philadelphia and Harrisburg,” explained diorama director and former history teacher Bob Heiserman. “The model is accompanied by a narrated video, and

The organization had to cancel last year’s tournament, so this year is especially exciting, he noted. “We are very optimistic about this event,” he said. “People are ready to come out to an outdoor event like this, and we’re ready for them.” People may sign up to participate as individuals or as a team of four, Kloidt said. “If you sign up individually, we will assign you to a team,” he stated. Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters
Some of the little acts of kindness that our staff do for our residents include.... • Delivering the newspapers to the residents so that they can read the newspaper while they enjoy breakfast in bed. • Driving a resident to a medical appointment and taking the long way home in order to go past the neighborhood where he lived as a child and listening to him describe how the area used to look. • Taking the time to iron a resident’s pair of slacks just like the way she used to iron them for herself.
WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car.
Our staff make it their mission to do those little things for our residents.

email Lily at ssmedich@comcast.net. Direct donations to FIA’s ministries in Bolivia can be made at www.fiaintl.org/donate/. Lily hopes to have the full $2,000 raised by early June, so donations are sought in May. FIA provided close to $45,000 in 2020 for COVID relief to the hard-hit town of Guayaramerin, in northern Bolivia. National pastors who partner with FIA have been using contributions to distribute food and medicine to the small villages in Cauchuela Esperanza and Primero
de Mayo. A caravan of three pickup trucks and a minivan have delivered enough food for more than 150 sick or grieving families. Waves of relief resources continue to be distributed every two weeks. “(In northern Bolivia), 90% of families (have) at least one person who contracted the virus. The local pastors who partner with us are desperate to offer hope and tangible demonstrations of God’s love to the villagers,” shared Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director.

One of the biggest projects the CEDC is working on involves restoration of the Hotel Locust, which the group purchased in 2015. It took a few years, but the group found an investor who is working to return the building to its former grandeur, Kloidt said, and turn it into a business anchor in downtown Columbia. “It’s going to be a mixed-use property,” explained Lutz, adding that construction is set to begin at

round of lockdowns, the children had not been able to get new shoes in quite some time, so Lily set a goal to raise $2,000 so each of the close to 100 orphans could receive a new pair of shoes. Working from her interest in art and fashion, Lily decided to handpaint bayong bags her Thai aunt helped her purchase from a womanowned Thai business. “I was excited that purchasing the purses was also going to bless the artisans who handmade them in Thailand. It’s like a double blessing,” Lily explained. Starting with 16 bags, Lily used acrylic paints to decorate the purses with her own design or with different flower patterns she learned through YouTube tutorials. By producing something both beautiful and useful, she hoped other women and girls would join her fundraising efforts. As of May 3, Lily had raised $1,200 toward the effort by asking family and friends to donate online to FIA’s work in Bolivia. Community members interested in buying any of the remaining bags may

A local youth recently undertook a project to aid Bolivian orphans as part of a larger COVID-19 outreach through Friends In Action Intl. (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown. The project began when Lily Medich, 11, of York, learned through FIA’s website about the great need in Bolivia. Northern Bolivia in particular has been significantly affected during the pandemic and continues to be severely under-resourced. The town hospital has a maximum capacity of 35 beds and one ventilator, and many people from nearby villages along the Amazon River travel two days to find medical items as simple as acetaminophen. Bolivian doctors have run out of many medications. “I can’t imagine living somewhere where there are no food banks, no shelters, or no clothing banks to help the people. I just knew I had to help in any way I could,” commented Lily. Lily decided to raise funds to help the Hogar de Andre de Esperanza y Alegria Orphanage. Due to another

Miller noted. “Many of our vendors can only be found at the Columbia Market House, and we are committed to bringing high-quality foods and products into the borough.” Bringing the market back to Columbia has been a long process that began in 2018. “Restoring a public market as the center for fresh foods in downtown Columbia gives residents access to high-quality, local products within walking distance,” Miller remarked. “The Market House has a rich history as the center for commerce and connection in the community. We are excited for it to return to its glory, so generations to come can make the same memories as those in the past. It acts as a place for old and new friendships to blossom, a place to get away on Saturday morning for coffee and a treat, or somewhere to grab your meal essentials for the week.” The Market House will be available to rent for special occasions such as baby showers or small weddings, Miller said, and the facility has a large seating area with approximately 100 seats, which can be flexibly arranged to accommodate groups. Catering for special events will be available by Gypsy Kitchen. For more information on the market, visit www.columbiapamarkethouse.org.

A once-vital building in Columbia is coming back to life. The Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., will celebrate its grand reopening on Saturday, May 29, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We have an entire weekend of events planned to celebrate the longanticipated reopening of the Market House,” said Kelsey Miller, healthy communities manager at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, which manages the market. She noted that the original Columbia market dates to 1869. “Each event has been planned to highlight the different aspects of the building,” she said. On the night before the grand reopening, a sold-out event called “Taste of the Market” will be held, featuring the market’s restaurant, Gypsy Kitchen. “On opening day, our 20 market vendors will be the main showcase, with special elements weaved throughout the day such as live music, thanks to our sponsor RG Injury Law, speakers and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon accompanied by a soda toast,” Miller stated. “Sunday is a food truck day meant to celebrate families, offering a free meal or treat from one of the food trucks to the first 450 people who registered and family-friendly activities.
