attend Hood College in the fall to follow a pre-med track and play lacrosse. Brittnie and Quentin will address the present and future, respectively, in their graduation speeches. “I’m going to talk about senior year and living in the moment,” noted Brittnie. Her post-graduation plans are to attend McDaniel College to major in social work. Quentin, the class historian, said he is still brainstorming the details of his speech. He plans to attend Stetson University to study film. As Brittnie, Quentin, and Trinity recently reflected on their time at CHS along with class president Mya Black and class treasurer Darian Ortman, they were able to name numerous teachers who made an impact on their lives. Trinity explained that Linda EckmanWissler, who teaches honors British literature for seniors, is a teacher who always believes in the students. “She’s awesome because she really challenges us,” said Trinity. “She gets frustrated when you don’t believe in yourself, because she really does believe in you, and it’s nice to see that she cares about you.” “(Mrs. Eckman-Wissler) is a fan favorite. Everyone loves her,” agreed Darian, who will be attending Towson University. She plans to major in biology with a concentration in
animals to eventually pursue a career as a veterinarian. Darian enjoyed taking forensics, marine biology, and honors biology with science teacher Rebecca Ohrel - and she is not the only one, as the 2018-19 yearbook was dedicated to Ohrel. “You can tell her anything, and she’s always there for you,” said Darian. “She’s a younger teacher, and she went here, so she really understands students.” Mya, who plans to attend Kutztown University to major in secondary special education, was grateful to have Mark Wisler as a math teacher. “He’s really funny, and he’s a really great math teacher,” said Mya. “He broke things down in a really simple way, and I felt like I knew it before having to practice it a lot.” The seniors also mentioned English teacher Sheila Ayres as someone who went out of her way to help students succeed. “For one of our essays, she allowed us to work in her room during a day we had off school for parent-teacher conferences,” recalled Trinity. “And she even bought us pizza.” Extracurricular activities provided even more opportunities for faculty to encourage growth in students. Brittnie listed science teacher Jim Rhoads, who also served as her tennis coach, as someone who challenged her and her teammates to reach new levels of success. In addition to the upcoming baccalaureate and commencement services, festivities for the Class of 2019 included a senior awards banquet and a one-day class trip to New York City.

Having been a part of chorus, band, orchestra, and concert choir at EYHS, Brandi said that she will inevitably miss the music department. Samantha, who was part of marching band, concert band, jazz band, orchestra, and musical orchestra, finished out her senior year a few weeks early to tour with The Cadets - Drum Corps International. In the fall, she is set to attend Duke University to major in biomedical engineering. Josh said that he will miss the teachers at EYHS and talking to them before the start of the school day. During his senior year, Josh chose to take part in the school’s work program, which allows students to attend classes for part of the day and then leave for a part-time job. He worked for his father’s business for those hours and also started a landscaping business, which he plans to continue doing full-time after he graduates. As class president, Josh will present a speech at commencement, along with the valedictorian and salutatorian. A total of 141 students will be graduating in the EYHS Class of 2019. Each student will receive six tickets to distribute to family and friends for the commencement ceremonies. Additional guests may sit in the EYHS Performing Arts Center to watch a live streaming of the event.

The members of the senior class will don their caps and gowns on Wednesday, June 5, for a walk through the hallways of either Canadochly, Kreutz Creek, or Wrightsville Elementary School - depending where they attended. EYHS senior class adviser Terri Doutrich said this is the first year for the walk, and the idea is to give graduating students a chance to say goodbye to favorite teachers and to inspire younger students. Among the group of graduates will be the Class of 2019 officers: president Josh Gillespie, vice president Drake Brown, secretary Brandi Himes, treasurer Olivia Koicuba, and historian Samantha Dilley. When reflecting on high school and what advice they would offer to underclassmen, the five senior officers all agreed: It goes quickly, so make the most of it. “Push through the hard work and the tough stuff. It might seem like a while, but you’ll be graduating before you know it,” said Drake, who will be attending Misericordia University in the fall to major in criminal justice and play football. “Start preparing early for college,” added Olivia. Her post-graduation plans are to attend Penn State Harrisburg to study business and play volleyball. Olivia noted that guidance secretary Donna Sullivan was among the EYHS faculty who went above and beyond for students. “She helped me so much with college stuff,” Olivia said. Another faculty member that the officers said made a definite impact on them was science teacher Kim Swartz. “She’s is always

Cool spring temperatures can sometimes delay peak strawberry season, but years of experience have meant that the organizers of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) Strawberry Festival usually hit the sweet spot with the timing of their event. The community is invited to attend the 14th annual HMPS Strawberry Festival

Garden Tour from pg 1 Each of the residential stops will host at least one artist working en plein air. Acrylics, oils, collages, and more will be produced during the garden tour. Musical artistry will also be offered at some of the gardens. At the home of Althea Ramsay Carrigan, tourgoers may look for established trees and shrubs, along with decorations with a bit of whimsy that complement newer plantings. A fairy garden, a koi pond, and an herb garden are some of the features at Gary and Theresa Divet’s property. The gardens at Jodi Eck’s carriage house show creative use of container plantings to accent a smaller space. At Kathy Hohenadel and Vickie Groff’s gardens, tourgoers will see a mix of perennials and shrubs that serve as a backdrop for two ponds in an outdoor entertaining space, as well as rose bushes that are more than 70 years old and have survived the care of multiple generations of this family. Dr. John and Brenda Jenson’s garden displays antique pieces artfully arranged in creative ways, including a literal interpretation of a “flower bed. The park-like setting of

Charles and Kay Leader’s property features areas of shade as well as sun gardens. Visitors may look for an array of perennials and entertaining spaces. More than 100 varieties of shrubs and perennials spring to life each year in the gardens of John and Wendy Reitzel, offering a continually changing display of color. John Reitzel designed and created the hardscapes including new patios and pergolas. Bob and Tina Sherick’s gardens showcase perennials, annuals, and a raised-bed walkin vegetable garden with a rose arch entrance. The grounds of Donna Troutman’s property are divided into two distinct spaces: one for gardens and another for entertaining. Plus, there are lots of plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Live music will be performed by N.E.V., a Campbelltown-based bluegrass band. with his 14.68-second time in the finals good enough for the senior to grab silver and a return trip to Shippensburg for the PIAA meet. Martin opened his 110H ride by winning his preliminary heat with a time of 15.13, and he moved into the final with a third-place time of 14.95 in the semifinal heat. Martin only had to run the 300H once, with his time of 43.62 falling short of his seeded time and putting him 22nd once all the times were sorted out. Olivia McLain was the other Golden Knight to make the trip to Shippensburg, where she competed in the 3200m. The senior turned in a time of 11 minutes, 35.39 seconds, to finish 16th in the 20-person 3A field.

There is nothing like the thrill of a playoff victory, with the excitement going higher if that victory is an upset just ask the Eastern York baseball team. The ninth-seeded Golden Knights eked out a 5-4 victory over the eighth-seeded Mustangs of West Perry in their District 3-4A opening round tilt on May 20. Despite the game starting with Eastern taking control, the Golden Knights had to survive a West Perry rally in the bottom of the seventh that nearly flipped the outcome the other way. The trouble began with one out in the bottom of the seventh when starter Evan Rishell hit his pitch count. Rishell had experienced little difficulty with the Mustangs, not counting the six free passes he issued, allowing just three hits and one second-inning run to go with nine punch-outs. Quinton McNew was not as fortunate once he took over for Rishell. He issued two walks and one hit, which was enough for West Perry to score three times. An Eastern York error did put two of those runs into the unearned column, but the damage had been done and the result was a 5-4 lead instead of the 5-1 cushion the Golden Knights had built. McNew’s troubles led to another pitching change, this time with Owen Shimmel taking over. He needed just nine pitches to shut down the Mustang rally and obtain the final two outs, securing the win for Rishell and the save for himself. The Golden Knights built the bulk of their lead with a three-run burst in the
top of the second, tacking on muchneeded insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Rishell, who finished with two hits, got the scoring started with a sac fly to right with one out in the frame. Three batters later, Jacob Bardo picked up his lone base hit of the game, a tworun single to right that made it 3-0. West Perry got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. The Golden Knights answered with Bren Taylor’s one-out single in the fourth that scored Justin Ranker, who had reached base on a West Perry error. Eastern York’s final and much-needed insurance run came two innings later on back-to-back doubles. Emmit Siler ripped the second of the two doubles, with his hit allowing Taylor to score, who had connected for one of his two doubles one batter prior. BOYS’ LACROSSE The Eastern York boys’ lacrosse team saw its season end on the same field as the Lady Golden Knights lax-ers, Crusader Stadium, which is home to the Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic squad. The LCD/LC team sent the Golden Knights home for the season courtesy of a 13-7 final that left Eastern with a 9-9 mark for the year. Eastern York nearly matched LCD in the opening quarter, trailing just 3-2 after 15 minutes, but the Cougars were able to stretch their lead heading into the break with a 3-0 run through the second frame. That 6-2 cushion increased to 11-5 after the third quarter, with Eastern York playing to a 2-2 draw in the final frame for the 13-7 final. Bryce Henise finished his final high
