SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LXIII • NO 16
Meeting The Needs Of The Community BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Exciting things are happening within the walls of Hands Across the Street/The Columbia Dream Center. “We are here to serve the community,” said Lynn Mull, director of operations and development. “We’re a faith-based organization, but we’re open to everyone.” For the 10th year, Hands Across the Street (HAS), located at Columbia Presbyterian Church,
360 Locust St., will offer a Summer Food Service Program weekdays at four locations in the area. “We provide a meal for children and their families, and we also have a lot of kids’ activities,” Mull said. HAS also serves the community with a soup kitchen, available weekdays, as well as its food pantry. “Our food pantry is set up like a grocery store, so people can come in, walk through and shop for what they need,” Mull said. The mission of Create Columbia is to promote the arts and promote Columbia, and the tour provides a perfect way to do that, said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the garden tour committee. Tourgoers may purchase tickets in the gazebo at Locust Street Park, 560 Locust St., and enjoy live music from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the park. Music from a
variety of genres will be coordinated by Chris Prestia, director of the Columbia School of Music. Plantings from various Columbia gardens will be for sale in the park while supplies last, and several local vendors will be set up as well. “They’ll be selling items to decorate your garden,” Hohenadel said. Vendors will include Virgin Iron Blacksmithing, Kim’s Prim co and Rust and Crafts. Local photography by John Reitzel will also be available for purchase in the park. Tourgoers will have the opportunity to explore eight gardens, each of which will feature at least one artist working en plein air. “People will get to see an artist creating something, whether it’s a collage, an oil painting, a watercolor or whatever they are working on,” Hohenadel explained. “You can enjoy the garden while watching art in progress.” Highlights of the garden tour will include annuals and perennials, herbs, water features and ornamentals. One of the gardens is certified by the National
Hundreds of cars, trucks and motorcycles will line Locust Street in Columbia on Saturday, June 18, during Thunder on the River. Preregistration for the car show is due by Saturday, June 11, with limited same-day registration available at the event, said Paul Resch, vice president of the Columbia Lions Club. “We can have a maximum of 450 cars, and we’re well on our way to that number,” he stated, noting that the number of entrants is the largest since the Lions Club took over the car show in 2014. “We have 85 trophies we’ll be giving out, and with 450 cars, your odds are pretty good to win a trophy,” Resch remarked. New this year, trophies will be awarded for fire chief ’s choice, police chief ’s choice and veterans’ choice, and each trophy will be accompanied by a gift card. “ We want to help our car owners with gas money they spent to bring their vehicle,” Resch said, explaining that entrants come from central Pennsylvania as well as Maryland, New Jersey and

away, the Columbia Lions Club continued the show under the new name, Thunder on the River, Resch said. Proceeds from the car show will benefit three local organizations: CBAA, the Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust and the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, which has earmarked its funds for restoration of the Zion Hill Cemetery. Resch noted that the car show is always held on the Saturday before Father’s Day, and he encourages families to attend. “It’s a wonderful
opportunity for fathers and sons and daughters to come out, look at the awesome cars together and enjoy the memories that cars, trucks and motorcycles bring us,” he said. “A lot of these cars are projects that fathers and sons or daughters have worked on together, so you can hear some really great stories behind the cars.” For more information on Thunder on the River or to register a car, visit www.columbialions.org or search for “Thunder on the River” on Facebook.

cled for funds. These funds will be used to continue the RMH’s mission of providing free lodging and meals to families whose children are being treated at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. In addition to being in close proximity to the hospital, the RMH provides a playroom for siblings, as well as staff members to provide assistance. As the Bible Adventure students collect the tabs yearround, they learn that their efforts help those in need. In May, they guess the total weight of the tabs, with the winner receiving a prize.
The Bible Adventure program is a state-approved nonprofit organization that is operated by Joy El Generation and is offered in many schools across the county. Students in third through 12th grades are allowed to leave their publicschool classrooms for one hour each week to receive Bible instruction. The students learn worship songs and Bible stories and memorize Scripture. For more information, visit www.joyelgeneration.org. Those who would like to donate tabs may take them to Lehman’s Feed Store, 6141 Lincoln Highway, Wrightsville.

“It’s a way for me to give back to VisionCorps and to help other people facing the same challenges that I am,” said Mike Hora, when explaining his motivation to participate in Eye Drop 2022, which is presented by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground. Hora is legally blind and has glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He began working at VisionCorps in 2013, and heard about the fundraiser from Megan Tomsheck, VisionCorps vice president. “I never had a fear of heights, and I was pretty active my entire life. I wanted to do it. It sounded like fun,” Hora recalled. “Megan Tomsheck provided some videos and literature, and the more I saw and read, the more excited I got. It’s our biggest fundraiser.” He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with

helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and to find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps. “Eleven years ago, it got to the point I was not able to do the work that I was trained for. Somebody recommended VisionCorps, and I contacted them. They jumped into action,” he said. “I was assigned a client manager, and they evaluated my needs and provided me with mobility and occupational and vocational rehab.” “I have never been charged a dime for the services I received,” he added. VisionCorps also provided Hora with technology training that allows him to use his smartphone and a computer. “I suffered significant vision loss two years ago. I
lost the ability to read texts, so I got introduced to a software program called JAWS that allows me to use the computer,” he said. “It actually reads what is on the screen and tells me what I am typing in. It’s like learning a whole new language.” Hora is taking part in the Eye Drop fundraiser for the third time. “This year I promised myself to give it more time coming down,” he said. “They do a great job with training. It’s very safe. They take all the safety precautions.” Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps.

Wildlife Federation as a haven for birds, bees and butterflies, among other wildlife. “This year, we have four properties that are neighbors, so people can park and walk through four gardens side by side,” Hohenadel noted. At Wright’s Ferry Mansion, tourgoers will not only enjoy the lush gardens surrounding the historic stone house but also get to learn about the history of the home and its gardens from a tour guide. Reproductions of Susanna Wright’s paintings and selections of her poetry will be located throughout the gardens as well.
The garden tour is a fundraiser for Create Columbia, a nonprofit organization that is currently raising funds for several artfocused projects in the borough as well as establishing a scholarship for people who want to pursue art, music or drama lessons. Tickets for the tour will be available for purchase on the tour date. Cash or checks will be accepted, with an additional service charge for purchase by credit card. The tour will be held rain or shine. For more information, including highlights of participating gardens, visit www.facebook.com /createcolumbia.
A new attraction at this year’s Eye Drop will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eyesight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions. To learn more about the event or to register as a participant, visit www.EyeDrop2022.org. Hora, an outdoorsman and fisherman, has created a fundraising team called American Ninja Walleyes. Those who would like to contribute to his fundraising efforts may visit https://give.vision corps.net/team/411113.

2,000 people a month, while the food pantry serves about 600 a month. Those numbers reflect the need in Columbia, where one in five families lives below the poverty level. The need for access to food increases in the summer as well, when the free school meals provided to all Columbia School District students aren’t available. A clothing bank is also located on-site at HAS, and it features options for men, women and children. “Everyone who comes into the clothing bank receives brandnew socks and underwear,” Mull said. Down the street from HAS, the Columbia Dream Center has recently undergone a few transformations at the Columbia Shelter, including renovations such as removing old carpeting and painting the walls and floor. A donation from DAS Companies in Elizabethtown provided 15 bunkbeds, replacing floor mats that guests were using. Upstairs at the shelter, the Restart Day Center is open daily, providing access to computers and serving lunch and snacks. A staff member is on hand at the center to help guests and community members connect to resources such as job and home searching, applying for benefits and more.
The Garden of Hope Annual Memorial Service
The Garden of Hope annual memorial service will celebrate the lives of babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Bin There Dump That has developed a comprehensive Garage Sale Guide with tips and tricks to help local homeowners plan and execute a successful, enjoyable yard sale. The guide is available for downloading at www.bin theredumpthatusa.com/pdf/ 1/garage-sale-guide.pdf. Before holding a yard sale, however, Mike Kernaghan, CEO of Bin There Dump That, suggests that homeowners follow several basic preparatory steps. First, people should confirm that their community and/or neighborhood allows homeowners to hold a garage or yard sale. Then, look into permit requirements and pick a day when people are likely to come; Saturdays are often best. People should do their research if they are selling art, jewelry, fashion items, books or other items that could have substantial value. Then, focus on pricing things right, keeping in mind that anything that is sold is for a profit because these are items that the seller did not want or need anyway. Make plans to get the word out before the sale through social media and word-ofmouth. People should place eye-catching, easy-to-read signs, along with balloons on the day of the sale, at major intersections near their home and at the entrance to their neighborhood. Kernaghan said that another way to attract potential buyers is to make the sale a neighborhood event. Neighbors may even want to share the expense of a dumpster to dispose of the items that don’t sell. Those who select items for the garage sale should remember that they have already made the decision that they don’t need them anymore. Stick to that decision and discard them rather than cart them back inside. To learn more about renting a dumpster or to discuss a project with a Bin There Dump That Dumpster consultant, contact Dolly Armstrong at Bin There Dump That of Harrisburg at 717766-7857 or dolly@binthere dumpthat.com or Justin Sierer of Bin There Dump That of York at 717-9005101 or york@binthere dumpthat.com. The Columbia Dream Center is modeled after its namesake, the Dream Center in Los Angeles. Staff members visit the California center twice a year for mission trips, and Columbia Presbyterian pastor Dave Powers has helped Columbia’s location become a part of the organization’s network. Becoming an official Dream Center has allowed the organization to brainstorm with other Dream Centers across the country for ideas on how to best serve the community, Mull said. As for the future, Mull noted that the organization has some lofty goals, including starting a mentor program to provide one-on-one guidance for guests and setting up an after-school program featuring time for games, crafts, homework help and dinner. She noted that the center relies on volunteers to keep operating, with only seven paid staff members. “There is a volunteer opportunity in every area,” she remarked. Mull came to the center as a volunteer before becoming a staff member, and she said she loves being able to serve others. “Sometimes all people need is a smiling face and someone to listen,” she commented. “If I can do that for someone, it’s a good day.” For more information on Hands Across the Street/The Columbia Dream Center, visit www.columbiahas.org.
