Grateful For An Amazing Month Community Supports Columbia Food Bank By Chelsea Peifer

“We’re pretty much here whenever people need us, which is kind of a nice reputation to have,” said Columbia Food Bank director Danielle Peters. And lately the community has turned out in spades to return that favor by supporting the food bank and its efforts. “We’ve had an amazing month,” Peters shared. “Every Saturday in May there has been a food drive for us.” The Mountville Lions Club kicked things off with its biannual food drive at Musser’s Markets, followed by the post office food drive the next weekend. On May 18, St. John’s Herr Estate collected nonperishable food items for the Columbia Food Bank as part of its Red, White, and Blueberry Jamboree.

“That was a new one for us, and it was a pretty sweet deal,” said Peters with a laugh, explaining, “If you brought 10 items in for the food bank, you got a free piece of blueberry pie.” Rounding out the month was a food drive on May 25 organized by Reformation Lutheran Church in Lancaster. “It has been amazing. I just can’t get over it,” Peters said. Located in the fellowship hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., the Columbia Food Bank serves residents of Columbia, Mountville, and West Hempfield and Manor townships who are in need of food assistance. “We’ve been in existence for over 30 years, and it started out as a hot lunch program for the Episcopal Ladies … but they soon realized something more was needed by the community,” explained Peters, who has served as the director for 14 years. “What we try to do here is See Food Bank pg 11

Columbia Food Bank director Danielle Peters (second from left) and volunteers, including (from far left) Tara Wright, Janet Herman, Edie Herman, and Dottie Sheehy, were thrilled to receive an influx of donations during the month of May, just in time for the food bank’s busy summer season.

Hero Walk from pg 1 the Columbia Hero Walk will benefit the PA Hero Walk, which supports veterans exclusively in Pennsylvania who may be having a difficult time medically or economically. The initiative provides assistance with housing, food, clothing, vehicle and home repair, appliance purchases and repairs, and utility payments. Androsky emphasized that the PA Hero Walk is run by volunteers, so the money does not go toward any staff expenses - only to helping veterans. Organizers have set a goal of raising $20,000 for the PA Hero Walk this year. Androsky said that after raising $2,000 at the first Columbia Hero Walk, organizers upped their goal to raising $5,000 at the second walk and just missed it by raising $4,600. Similarly in year three, the event raised $9,600 - just barely missing the $10,000 goal. However, Androsky said that the winds shifted last year as organizers set a goal to raise $15,000, and the event raised more than $16,000. Businesses and individuals who would like to support the Hero Walk but are unable to participate may mail donations or drop off contributions earmarked for the Hero Walk at Post 1306, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia. Columbia Hero Walk registration for individuals and teams will open at 7 a.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. To register in advance, individuals may call 717-4495635. Participants will receive an event Tshirt. Cyclists will depart at 7:50 a.m., and walkers and runners will step off at 8 a.m. Participants may complete 14 miles along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, finishing at Fisherman’s Wharf, the Falmouth access point off Route 441. Several exit points are available for individuals who would prefer to complete a shorter portion of the trail. Comfort stations with beverages and snacks will be offered at five points along the route. Transportation back to Post 1306 will be provided for participants with the exception of bicyclists. The top three individual and team finishers in both walking and biking categories will receive awards at a ceremony at Post 1306 after the race. Free refreshments and a chicken barbecue meal will be available for participants. “We had 74 participants last year, Androsky said. “This year we hope to go over 100. The annual walk is one of several ways that Post 1306 reaches out to veterans. The post also hosts an annual catch-and-release fishing event for veterans at Lake Aldred and sponsors quarterly outings for the veterans from the Lebanon VA. For more information on the walk, readers may email cwvherowalk@gmail.com.

Eastern York Softball Falls in PIAA Opener by Eric Pyles

Hornet victory by tossing a complete game no-hitter. The freshman did The saying goes that all good issue four walks but limited the damthings must come to an end so it was age by keeping Eastern hitless inevitable that Eastern York’s softball throughout. Morgan Winter, Amber season would conclude at some time Forry, Gillian Toomey and Haidyn Shafbut no one in the Lady Golden Knights’ fer accounted for those walks but dugout on June 3rd wanted the season ended up as four of Eastern York’s to end quite so soon. Eastern’s historic seven runners left on base. Forry and season, that included the program’s Winter, along with Kelsey Felix, first District 3 title, came to a close reached base on Lady Hornet errors but ended up stranded as well thanks to a strong Honesdale defensive effort. Despite the early PIAA exit the Lady Golden Knights’ season will go down as one of, if not the best, in program history because of what went down in Newville on the last day of May. Eastern York, behind a stellar Leber outing, claimed the District 3-4A title with a 1-0 victory over James Buchanan at Big Spring High School. Leber secured the team’s first district crown by holding the fourth seeded Lady Rockets to just one hit, adding two strikeouts and one walk to her day in the circle. The one hit and one walk both came in the bottom of the seventh and threatened to erase Eastern York’s 1-0 lead but Leber put an end to Staff photo the budding rally. She picked up out Maelynn Leber jumps on the Honesdale fastball during an at bat number two with her second and final in Eastern’s 3-0, PIAA opening-round loss at York College last strikeout before inducing a game endMonday. ing groundout to third that secured with a 3-0 loss to Honesdale in the first round of the PIAA 4A tournament. As she has all year Maelynn Leber was in the circle for Eastern York and pitched as well as one could ask, surrendering just four hits and three unearned runs to go with three strikeouts and one walk. Unfortunately, for the Lady Golden Knights, their bats were stifled by Honesdale’s hurler, Marissa Gregory, who secured the Lady

the win and championship. Eastern York managed just four hits in the win but half came in the sixth inning leading to the game’s only score. Morgan Dobbeck opened the game winning rally with a one out single to left and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Winter’s flyout to right pushed Dobbeck to third, just 60-feet from paydirt. Leber added a two-out walk to her game high two base hits, opening the door for Felix to deliver the title winning hit. Felix came through by slipping one through the right side of the infield, allowing Dobbeck to race home for what proved to be the game winning run. Eastern York earned the title shot after surviving Mother Nature and the Lady Vikings of Northern Lebanon. The semifinal battle between the second seeded Lady Vikings and the sixth seeded Lady Golden Knights was originally scheduled for Tuesday May 28th but severe storms ripped through the mid-state pushing the game back one day. Mother Nature struck again with another round of storms moving the game back yet another day. The two teams finally squared off on May 30th with Eastern York coming out on top 3-0.

Leber held a potent NL attack that came in averaging just shy of 10 runs a game to just two hits and eight total base runners. Four of those base runners stemmed from Eastern errors with Leber issuing two walks to go with the two hits and four strikeouts. Leber not only picked up the win for her work on the mound, she made the most of her lone hit by driving in the game’s first run. Leber’s big blow came in the top of the sixth after Winter led off with a free pass to first. Leber ripped a 2-2 pitch to right that got by the right fielder, Taylor Douple, allowing Winter to score and Leber to reach third for a standup triple. Katie Lehman made it a 2-0 game by connecting on her third and final single of the contest, pushing Leber across. Eastern York’s third run came in the top of the seventh with help from Northern Lebanon. Dobbeck smacked a one out double to center and moved to third on Winter’s ground out one batter later. Dobbeck took advantage of her close proximity to home by scoring on a Lady Viking wild pitch during Leber’s final at-bat. Eastern York’s District 3-4A journey opened on May 23rd with a 7-3 quarterfinal victory over the third seeded

Lady Crusaders of Bishop McDevitt. The Lady Golden Knights needed eight innings to get by McDevitt due to some early struggles from the typically sound Leber. Those struggles included three of the six Lady Crusader hits, with two coming in the bottom of the opening frame leading to a 1-0 hole. McDevitt picked up the third hit in the third inning and when combined with Leber’s hit batsman resulted in a 2-0 deficit. The Lady Golden Knights began their comeback in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally that cut the Crusader lead in half. Felix got things rolling with a double to right and moved to third when Lehman reached on an error. Another McDevitt error allowed Felix to scoot home to make it a 2-1 affair. Eastern York picked up two runs in the top of the sixth to move in front 32 with Leber getting things started with a leadoff double. Lehman picked up her second hit of the contest, a one out double that plated Leber’s courtesy runner Morgan Estes to knot the game at 2-2. A two-out single by Lauren Breault resulted in the 3-2 lead after Lehman scored thanks to another McDevitt error.

collecting seven of their 13 hits in the frame, leading to a four-run burst and the 7-3 win. Felix and Lehman kick started the rally with back-to-back one out singles. Forry delivered the first RBI hit of the frame with a single to right that plated both Felix and Lehman for a 5-3 cushion. Makenzie Buchmyer and Toomey made it five straight base

hits which loaded the bases with just one out. Shaffer’s fielder’s choice put two outs on the board but the bases were still loaded. Dobbeck delivered the Lady Golden Knights’ sixth single of the frame, pushing Buchmyer across for a 6-3 lead and setting up Winter for the RBI single that plated Toomey for the 7-3 lead. Leber wrapped up her eight innings in the circle with three quick outs to secure the win. She finished with four strikeouts and no walks to go with six hits and three runs allowed. TRACK The 2019 track and field season officially came to a close on Friday May 24th and Saturday May 25th with Demonte Martin’s participation in the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University. Martin kicked off the meet with a fourthplace finish in heat four of the 110H, missing the automatic berth in the semifinals that comes with a top three finish but making the cut as one of the next four fastest times. Martin was unable to replicate that path in Satur-

day’s semifinals where his 15.05 was good enough for sixth in his heat but fell 0.03 seconds short of the final qualifying mark. BASEBALL The baseball team saw their postseason run end on May 24th with a loss to eventual District 3-4A champion East Pennsboro. The top seeded Panthers needed five innings to get by Eastern York, posting a 10-0 victory to end the Golden Knights’ season in the district quarterfinals. Eastern York was unable to solve East Pennsboro’s Nick Embleton, managing just three hits and five total baserunners. The Golden Knights appeared to have something going in the top of the first with a leadoff walk by Evan Rishell followed by a Bren Taylor single but a fly out and two Embleton strikeouts quickly ended the budding rally. The two remaining Eastern York hits both came in the fifth inning but Embleton and the Panther defense made sure the shutout remained intact. Embleton’s sixth pun-

chout put one out on the board after Quentin McNew led off the inning with a single. Embleton got Justin Ranker to ground into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Rishell kept the inning alive with the final Eastern York hit but Embleton quickly shut things down by forcing another ground out.

Owen Shimmel got the start but only covered three innings before giving way to Rishell. Rishell’s stay lasted two-thirds of an inning before McNew took over for the final out. The trio combined for seven walks with no strikeouts, eight hits allowed and 10 runs.

King St., on Wednesday, June 12, at 6 p.m. Twelve area poets will read their poetry as part of the event. Carla Christopher, a York poet and kindness advocate, will facilitate the program. There will be meet-and-greets with the

poets before and after the readings, and light refreshments will be served. Elementary winners are Wesley Grove, David Warde and Nazare Brown. Middle school honorees are Natally Perez, Quantez Moody, Deborah Yanez and Kya Moul. Adult winners are Dot McDonald, Pat Long and Jill Euclide. Food Bank from pg 1 say, ‘Hi, come in, sit down, and tell us your story.’ And everyone that comes through our doors has a story.” Connecting on a relational level is a vital part of the screening process for the staff and volunteers at the Columbia Food Bank. “It’s the idea of talking to our clients. The more we can know them, the more we can try to help them,” Peters said. “Food for the body is a given, but sometimes you just need food for your soul and to know that somebody is going to see you,” continued Peters. “What grounds me and my volunteers is that consistency of connection.” Staying grounded is certainly a necessity, as the organization is one of the two largest food pantries in the county, second only to the downtown Lancaster County Food Hub, formerly known as the Lancaster County Council of Churches. In addition to Peters and assistant director Suzanne Ollar, the team at the Columbia Food Bank is made up of approximately 20 volunteers ranging from age 7 to 92. Some help out once a month while others are there every day that the food bank is open to clients. “It looks like such a small family (of volunteers), but when you look at the numbers it just kind of knocks your socks off (that we can do this),” remarked Peters. According to Ollar, the Columbia Food

Bank distributed more than 25,000 pounds of food from January to April. In 2018, more than 65,000 pounds of food was handed out, and Ollar is projecting that number will increase to more than 73,000 pounds for 2019. More than 6,000 pounds of food items was collected through the food drives in May, yet there is still a need for continuing donations in the months to come. Nonperishable food donations may be delivered to the church during food bank operating hours between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, or folks may call 717-449-5101 to schedule a time. More volunteers are always welcome, particularly in the summer months - a season that Peters noted is an extra busy time for the food bank. To inquire about volunteering or food bank eligibility, interested individuals may call the aforementioned number or visit www.columbiafoodbank.org. Anyone may stop in once a year to receive an emergency box of food. “We just want people to know that we’re here. You’re trying to make it, but there are just some months that you run into the perfect storm with medical bills or losing a job or any number of things, and that’s when we want people to know we’re here,” summarized Peters. “Tell them to come in and tell us their story.”
