“Project Lifesaver is for people who have cognitive impairment that makes them prone to wander,” said Kelly Osborne, community services officer and Project Lifesaver coordinator with the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster County. Now that the State Police officers serving in Lancaster are affiliated with Project Lifesaver, the service is available in all areas of the county. Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the batteryoperated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. “Should a (participant) go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department. (Police officers) plug in the frequency to pick up that specific transmitter,” explained Osborne, who noted that the

Columbia High School Graduation

Columbia Graduates Urged To “Think Differently” BY CATHY MOLITORIS The Class of 2022 at Columbia High School celebrated graduation on May 26 in the auditorium of the school, 901 Ironville Pike. The 150th commencement featured the largest class in the past five years at the school, with 94 students graduating. Principal Elizabeth Landis spoke to the students and audience members, noting the accomplishments of the student body. “We celebrate each graduate and the role they have played in positively i m pac t i n g o u r w h o l e ca m p u s community,” she said. “Before you are scholars, thespians, musicians, athletes, entrepreneurs, employees and the list could go on. This class is a talented and inspired group.” Urging the students to stand out from the crowd, she quoted Steve Jobs and his belief that people who think outside the box are the ones who make a difference. “Class of 2022, think differently,” Landis said. “Be a misfit, be a round peg in a square hole. Be crazy enough to think that you can change the world, because you can, and you will.”

Six student speakers addressed their classmates and the audience, e a c h h i g h l i g ht i n g a d e f i n i n g moment in his or her life. Ethan Schmitt spoke of making a promise to himself not to work an unfulfilling job just for a paycheck, but to instead work hard to reach his goals. Class president Kylie Aston recalled several defining moments in her life, all of which led her to where she is today. A l ay n a M o ra l e s s p o ke a b o u t enduring an eight-hour spinal surgery and how her recovery helped her to appreciate the little things in life that many people take for granted. Ereny Hanna spoke about her family’s experience immigrating to the United States from Egypt. “My parents decided to leave everything they had behind, because they were thinking of the future of t he i r ow n c h i ld re n , ” s he s ai d . Wrapping up the student speeches, valedictorian Sarah Hollerbush emphasized that defining moments are not always positive experiences, describing how she took steps to escape a domestic abuse situation and emerge not as a victim, but a survivor. Following the ceremony, the students proceeded to the school courtyard for the traditional tossing of the caps to celebrate their achievement.

Eastern High School Graduation

Bright Future For Eastern York Graduates The motto of the Class of 2022 at Eastern York High School was “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” This quote from C.S. Lewis reflected the anticipation and celebration of students as they marked graduation on June 1. “As I look around, I see hope, excitement and a few tears,” said class president M.J. Elizabeth Music, addressing her fellow students. Bob McKinnon, a

member of the Eastern York High School Class of 1986, was the guest speaker. He recalled visiting the high school a few m o nt h s a g o a n d marveli ng at the construction of a tree for the set of the spri ng musical, “James and the Giant Peach.” “If these kids can make this, what will they make when they l e ave he re ? ” he wo n dered. The author related his own mistakes in life and advised the graduates to be kind to one a n o t he r. “ D o n’ t m a ke s o me o ne fe e l b ad . Make them feel good,” he said. “It is so easy to make someone’s day with a smile or compliment.” B rad e n A n d rew Bolton was recognized as s a l u tato r i a n . I n high school, he was active in music programs, including the marchi ng band and district and county band. He plans to attend the University of Alabama to major i n envi ronmental science and political science. “I would like to commend this

class for living through one of the strangest high school experiences possible, the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said. “Through all the trials and tribulations, we made it.” Lindsay Marie Wooditch was named valedictorian. An avid outdoorsman, she especially enjoyed AP Biology. She plans to attend Colorado State University to study fish, wildlife and conservation biology. “I want to start off by saying I will not miss high school,” she s a i d , e x p l a i n i n g t h at s he’s l o o k i n g fo rwa rd rather than looking back. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of balance in all aspects of life. “If you a re s ca re d o r d e e p ly saddened to leave high school, I hope you can find comfort in what lies ahead of you,” she said. “I hope you are able to e m b rac e yo u r f u t u re plans. Cherish the memories of high school, but do not get stuck in the past.” When Music addressed the audience, she acknowledged specific te ac he rs w h o h ave

made an impact on her life before focusing on advice for the Class of 2022. “It is people like us, young people, who will change the world,” she said. “It is now our job to make our own mark on our world today.” A veteran honorary high school diploma was presented by superintendent Joseph Mancuso to Jon Frazer Langione, a member of the United States Army. Langione left Eastern York High School in 1963 before graduation and enlisted in the Army on his 17th birthday. He served during the Vietnam War and spent 30 years in the military.

Program To Encourage Pet Fostering Pet Pantry of Lancaster County is teaming up with national nonprofit Petco Love and Skechers to highlight the fun in fostering pets. Pet fostering is important for animal shelters, particularly during the busy summer season. According to the Pet Pantry Rescue Team, the greatest stressor for dogs living in a

A special program is being held in June to encourage pet fostering.

kennel environment is social isolation. By helping to assure a dog that it is safe and will continue to be cared for and loved, a foster volunteer can mitigate the animal’s stress. The dog program at the pet pantry is 100% foster-based. Dogs do not live in kennels; they are placed in homes. However, this method means that the organization can only save as many dogs as it has foster families to place them with. Throughout June, Petco Love will work with its network of partners nationwide to share the fun aspects of fostering while helping pet parents get through their foster pet goodbyes. Petco Love is taking a humorous approach to saying goodbye to foster pets by holding a #MyFosterBreakUp story contest featuring Foster Breakup Kits giveaways and a curated playlist to help foster pet parents through their goodbyes. Kits include cozy, festive socks from the BOBS from Skechers philanthropic footwear collection; a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream; tissues; the official Petco Love Foster Breakup Spotify Playlist; and a T-shirt that says, “Foster Pets
