There’sno shortage of fun happening at Columbia Public Library this summer. The library, 24 S. Sixth St., kicked off its Summer Reading Program on June 3, and the activities will run until Saturday, Aug. 12.

“Our theme is ‘All Together Now,’ which embraces the idea of working together,” said Heather Beury, library director. “It

Friendship Fire Company marks 100 years

The Friendship Fire Company of Hellam - Company 21 marks 100 years of service to the community this year. Located at 163 E. Market St., Hallam, the organization is a fully volunteer operation.

“I think we’ve been around as long as we have because of the people who are part of this community,” said Lee Nanfelt, station chaplain. “We have a lot of families involved here and a lot of lifers.”

The Friendship Fire Company formed in 1923, succeeding the Hellam Hose and Ladder Company, whose records date from 1907 to 1913. In 1924, Friendship Fire purchased a combination pumper and chemical apparatus, and the organization formed a ladies’ auxiliary in 1930.

embraces our differences and our diversity.”

Summer Reading participants may pick up a reading log at the library or sign up online at the library’s website, https://columbiapubliclibrary.org.

“We now have online registration for programs,” Beury noted.

Highlights of the Summer Reading Program include a return visit from Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary on Wednesday, July 26. “We are

introducing ‘Touch a Truck’ events this year, and we’re bringing in the Hands-on House and Lancaster Science Factory as well,” Beury stated. “We have a new magician, Erick Hershey, this year.”

The goal of the Summer Reading Program, which is open to people age 19 and under, is to promote literacy and fun, she shared. “It’s really good to keep kids reading all summer long, so they are prepared when school starts again,” Beury

said. “We have some really great programs, and there are opportunities to win rewards and prizes for reading.”

Beury took over as director of the library in May, when former director Lisa Greybill retired. Beury has worked for the library for 23 years, serving most recently as operations manager. In her new role, she’s ready to bring new programs and opportunities to the library.

Today, the company has about 40 active firefighters, including junior firefighters ages 14 to 18. A fleet of vehicles includes engines and a tanker truck, with capabilities of handling everything from brush fires to interior blazes. The organization also provides fire police services to control traffic after a fire or vehicle accident.

Although the station is based in Hallam, it offers services well beyond the borough. “We have a lot of area we cover,” said firefighter Aimee Torbert. “We cover Wrightsville, Hellam Township

Pep rally-themed VBS posted

Christ Curch Yorkana, 5 Main St., Yorkana, will host a “Victory” vacation Bible school (VBS) from 9 to 11:30 a.m. daily from Monday to Friday, July 10 to 14. The pep rally-themed program is based on 1 Corinthians 15:57 and is for children age 4 through those who have completed sixth grade.

Through the stories of biblical figures like David and

Esther, children will learn about victory through courage, obedience, faith, unity and Jesus. The VBS will also feature a special cheer for each group of children, prizes and spirit days, including Red, White and Blue Day; Hat Day; and Mismatch Day.

Children who attend every day will be entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate to Go ‘N Bananas.

Offerings will be received for Heifer International, and the amount raised will determine the number of chances children will have to pop a slime-filled balloon over the head of Pastor Jason, the master of ceremonies, at the closing celebration on July 14 at 11:15 a.m. in the sanctuary. During the closing celebration, the kids and staff members will also recap the week with songs and Bible

PCA&D to present exhibits

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) will present “Sendoff,” a selection of artworks by the members of the Class of 2023, in its Main Gallery through Friday, June 30. The show features a sampling of the thesis work in illustration, painting, animation, game art, photography, video, sculpture, and graphic design created by PCA&D’s most

recent alumni. This exhibit provides an opportunity for those who missed the annual weekend Senior Show event in early May to view a condensed version of that large-scale exhibition and continue to celebrate the students.

On First Friday, July 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., the college will present “Creative Contributions” in its Hayden Gallery, a space nor-

mally off view to the public except through the building’s front windows. “Creative Contributions” will highlight artworks by alumni Randall Lear, Class of 2011, and Joe Palumbo, Class of 2008, artists who served as alumni jurors for student artwork exhibitions in 2022-23.

Palumbo, director of Grandview Gallery in West Lawn, is a fantasy illustrator whose work has appeared on comic book covers, graphic novels, and magazines and is exhibited in galleries and private collections.

One of the programs Beury is especially excited to promote is reading with therapy dogs. Kelly Skiptunas, a reading volunteer, will bring her Rottweiler, Jager, to the library on Thursday, July 13; Wednesday, July 19; Tuesday, Aug. 1; and Wednesday, Aug. 9. Children will have the opportunity to read with the dog after a Summer Reading Program activity held on the same dates.

“Reading to dogs is not threatening, because they don’t judge,” Skiptunas remarked. “No one is going to laugh at you if you ask a question or if you stumble over

Skiptunas is a member of the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and Reading Education Assistance Dogs and has been bringing pups to the library for the past 15 years. Along with Jager, other therapy dogs that regularly read with children are Rottweilers Dillon and Holly and cardigan Welsh corgi Ronnie.

In addition to the library, Skiptunas brings her dogs to local nursing homes, Park Elementary School in Columbia, Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC in York and the Lebanon VA Hopsital.

Thanks to a grant, children who read with the dogs receive a small prize afterward, which can range from a new book to bookmarks or coloring pages.

“Reading with the dogs is a wonderful way to get kids excited about reading,” Skiptunas said. “It’s just so rewarding.”

In the first four months of 2023, the station handled 163 calls.

Torbert, who is a college student studying to become a registered nurse and an emergency medical technician, started as a junior firefighter and has a lifelong family connection to the fire company, something

that’s common among the volunteers. “My family grew up in it,” she stated, noting that her brother is a lieutenant with the company. “I love being able to help people.”

To mark its 100th birthday, the fire company will hold a community celebration in October. The festivities will run from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, and will begin with a parade of emergency apparatus from several mutual aid fire companies through Hallam Borough. A ceremony, featuring remarks from company officials, will be held upstairs at the station

in the community room.

“Our chief, Eric Strittmatter, will speak, and I’ll offer a prayer,” Nanfelt said. “We’ll have a slideshow of some of the history of the company, and we’ll have both past and present firefighters there.”

The formal celebration will conclude with a traditional housing ceremony when firefighters will roll the company’s recently purchased engine into the firehouse.

“After that, everyone is invited out back for hot dogs, hamburgers, a fly over, demonstrations of equipment and a demonstration from the K9

The Lancaster Public Library is continuing its Fabulas Campaign to help fund its new building, which will officially open on June 27. As of May, the organization still needed to raise $600,000 of the $10 million required for the project.

In its new location, the library will anchor the first two floors of the Christian Street Parking Garage, facing Barney Ewell Plaza in the 100 block of North Queen Street. The

library’s new home will be larger, brighter and more accessible, and it will feature updated technology and spaces and resources designed for today’s library patrons. The library will feature more usable space, children’s and young adult areas, program spaces and meeting rooms, Wi-Fi and an outdoor terrace. Additionally, the new Business and Reference Center and its professional librarians will continue to

provide free access to databases and other information to serve local businesses.

The library’s services range from story times and STEM programs for kids to jobhunting resources for adults.

Bevivino earns Eagle Scout Award

A Scout from Troop 25 in East York has earned the Eagle Scout Award, signifying the highest advancement rank in Scouts BSA. Joseph Bevivino III received his award from Troop 25 Assistant Scoutmaster David Zelis during Troop 25’s Court of Honor held on Feb. 28 at Advent Lutheran Church in York.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Joey, son of Elaine and Perry Bevivino, replaced a bridge over a small creek at

Rocky Ridge County Park. The project required removing the existing bridge by digging out the supports, disposing of the old parts and pieces, installing the new bridge using telephone poles as supports and pressure-treated plywood as the decking, and cleaning up the area by spreading stones and dirt to level the ground. The project took a total of 110 man hours to complete.

Starting as a Tiger Cub in Pack 25, Joey has been a Scout for 12 years. Since crossing over to Troop 25, he has earned 31 merit badges and served as senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, chaplain, and junior assistant Scoutmaster in the troop. He is also a member of Scouts BSA’s national honor society, the Order of the Arrow (OA), and has served as an OA representative. Joey has graduated from Central York High School and will attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., to study business management. He hopes to eventually be commissioned as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force.

DAR members attend state conference

The Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (PSSDAR) met from April 27 to 29 for its 126th annual State Conference at the Lancaster Wyndham Resort and Conference Center. Pennsylvania state regent Marguerite Fritsch of Landisville presided over the conference. Her state theme is “Love of Service to God, Home, and Country.” Her state project is the restoration and preservation of Old Swedes Cemetery, Chester, where John Morton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is buried.

Several members of Lancaster’s Donegal-Witness Tree DAR were on hand for the conference. In attendance were Suzanne Whallon, regent; Mary “Sue” McClure, past regent; M. Ann Grove, director; Rebecca Rinehard, recording secretary; Cheryl Weaver, historian; Ann Carter, registrar and parliamentarian; Carol Elfner, chaplain; Nancy LeFevre, corresponding secretary; Elizabeth Miller; and new members Donna Statkus, Kathryn Raffensperger, and Barbara Searles.

The conference kicked off with a welcome dinner on April 27. Then members gathered to hear author Laurance Cook, a nationally recognized presidential historian, talk about his book, “Symbols of

Patriotism: First Ladies and Daughters of the American Revolution.” After this, junior members hosted an “April Madness” party for which attendees were encouraged to wear attire from their favorite sports teams. Next, attendees participated in a trivia challenge.

Kathleen Zinskie, PSSDAR state chair of national defense, organized the April 28 veterans’ luncheon supporting the work of the United Service Organizations (USO), which aims to provide comfort care and a feeling of “home away from home” for the U.S. armed forces. Attendees were asked to bring lunch boxes for children of military families and to participate in “Rucksacks to Backpacks,” a program that helps veterans by providing essential school supplies to their children. Speakers included Jenna Price, USO Central Pennsylvania Center operations and programs manager, and Capt. Kristopher Reed, assistant professor of military service with Blue Mountain Battalion ROTC. In addition, a “Missing Man Table” reminded attendees of fallen, missing, or imprisoned U.S. military service members. Immediately after the luncheon, the backpacks and lunch boxes were collected by representatives of the military

The conference also included business sessions, educational workshops, a luncheon organized by the Children of the American Revolution (CAR), and a Celebration of Life service at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Paradise.

Awards were presented, as well. Among the winners was Carolyn Bausinger of the Donegal-Witness Tree Chapter, who was the runner-up for Volunteer Information Specialist of the Year.

Mennonite Life posts book auction

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual book auction on Friday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room and will feature a collection of rare and used books that will be up for bids.

Among the available books this year are several volumes that relate to local history and culture, such as Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia” in its original leather binding and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” (“Of the History of the Martyrs”) in its original vellum binding. “Opera Omnia” was written in 1681, and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” was published in 1722; both tomes were scribed in Dutch. Other books available to purchase will include “The Earth Is the Lord’s” by John L. Ruth, “Building on the Gospel Foundation” by Burdge and Horst and an 1849 edition of “Martyr’s Mirror” by Thieleman J.

van Braght.

Bids may be placed online and by mail until Thursday, July 13, and the auction books will be displayed in Mennonite Life’s Collections Building in the weeks leading up to the event. For more information, visit https://mennonitelife.org /events.

Mennonite Life hosts three annual book auctions, a tradition that began over two decades ago. The organization’s goals in holding the auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.

The organization acquires the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite

and the general chair of the conference was Susan Gillette Meer. Guests included Rebecca Kline, state regent of Kansas; Carolyn Nutt, state regent of Massachusetts; Laurie Nesbitt, state regent of Virginia; and Lynne Stallcop, national chair, conservation, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).

The NSDAR is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Life in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently decommissioned from the Mennonite Life Library to be sold in the auction.

“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and how it impacts people.”

All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to preserve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a

book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the general public come out and enjoy seeing these books.”

“‘Parables of Jesus’ is a high-energy and humorous telling of the stories that Jesus told to His followers,” said Ashlee Heyward, team member, describing Piercing Word’s original production. “The piece gives the audience a fresh and everyday perspective of these stories told over 2,000 years ago, and we tell them word for word from the English Standard Version Bible. The Scripture is our script.”

“Parables of Jesus” will be performed at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 1.

The stories are told with an African inspiration. “The use of African-inspired instruments and movement helps remind viewers of how beautifully diverse the church is,” Heyward explained. “In a

season where we are seeing so much division and brokenness in our country when it comes to issues of race, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate and demonstrate our unity in Christ.”

The show will include stories of the sheep and shepherd, the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, among others. “This show is both humorous and

poignant and will leave you thinking deeply about the truths presented in a fresh way,” Heyward shared. “It’s a fun show that is perfect for the whole family.”

“Parables of Jesus” invites audience members to watch as Jesus helps His followers understand the nature of the Kingdom of God and the value of following Him.

“‘Parables of Jesus’ is woven together flawlessly,” shared Jeff Gibelius, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle. “It has a fascinating African production style to it that encourages viewing familiar stories in a new light.”

Piercing Word is a nonprofit ministry based in Lancaster with a mission “to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” The organization has been performing Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the Bible, since 2007.
