A new place to play

After 20 years of wear and tear, the playground at the Barshinger Complex on Accomac Road in Hellam needed a makeover. Thanks to grants from the Powder Mill Foundation and York County, Eastern York Recreation Authority (EYRA) has been able to rebuild the playground, which opened in June.

“The new playground is ADA accessible, with a transfer station to allow access for all abilities,” said Jessica Cirilo, parks and recreation director. “It’s designed for ages 12 and under, and it’s open the same time as the complex - 8 a.m. to dusk.”

The original playground equipment was installed as an Eagle Scout project in 1999. Cirilo noted that the new space was made possible thanks to community donations in addition to the grants, which only covered about half of the cost of the project. “Taking care of existing facilities and improving what we have is a priority,” Cirilo stated. “Seeing the wear and tear of this popular site, updating this play space became a priority.”

EYRA began in 2019, established by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The organization coordinates youth sports formerly offered by Hellam Recreation Commission and is a 501(c)(3) municipal authority with Hallam Borough, Hellam Township and Lower Windsor Township contributing to EYRA’s mission. EYRA provides baseball, softball and soccer programs, with youth basketball coming this fall. Most of the programs are open to youths ages 4 to 18.

“The idea behind EYRA is to be a one-stop shop for youth sports,” Cirilo shared, noting that the organization relies heavily on volunteers and community donations.

“We don’t own any of the properties we use,” she explained. “The property owners let us use them, and we maintain them.” The cost of maintenance is high, with the biggest expenses coming from lawn

Honor a veteran with a wreath

Last year, Phil Lehman Jr. organized the first Wreaths Across America program in Wrightsville, encouraging community members to purchase a Christmas wreath to place on a veteran’s grave in one of three local cemeteries.

The program was well received last year, he noted, adding, “We had an excellent turnout, and many people asked, ‘Are you doing this in 2023?’”

The answer is yes.

Orders are being taken now for the wreaths, which will be placed on graves on Saturday, Dec. 16.

mowing and field upkeep. “The cost of dirt to groom a field is thousands of dollars,” Cirilo emphasized.

Participation in EYRA programs is up in every sport, she stated, adding, “Our baseball participation has tripled since 2019.” Looking ahead, EYRA is considering adding lacrosse and expanding its adult programming.

Although EYRA has only existed for four years, youth recreational sports in the region date back much further. Recently, Cirilo received a

donation from Joel and Aletha Groff of Hellam, who presented a collection of softball items dating back to the mid-1970s. “Aletha was the original president of Hellam Softball and started a league for 13- to 15year-old girls, with three teams in the league, in 1972,” Cirilo remarked. The couple donated more than a dozen trophies as well as newspaper articles about the league. Although the items are currently stored in Cirilo’s office, she has set a goal to have display cases for them

as well as other honors earned from all youth sport achievements over the years. “The location for this is to be determined, but I would love a display case donation,” she stated.

EYRA programs are offered to everyone, whether they live locally or not. Residents living in Hallam Borough, Hellam Township and Lower Windsor Township receive a discounted rate on the programs.

For more information on EYRA, visit www.easternyorkrec.com or email eyrecauthority@gmail.com.

“We’re looking to increase our numbers from 465 in 2022 to 600 or more in 2023,” Lehman stated. “We have more than 780 veterans at Fairview Cemetery, 42 at Mount Pisgah Cemetery and seven at Union Cemetery.” Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization. The idea for the tribute began as a seed that was planted when Morrill Worcester, a 12-year-old paperboy for the Bangor Maine Daily News, won a trip to Washington, D.C. Arlington National Cemetery made a lasting impression on Morrill, who later became the owner of Worcester Wreath Company. In 1992, with a surplus of wreaths near the end of the holiday season, he remembered visiting Arlington as a boy and arranged for wreaths to be placed in the cemetery. The idea became a nationwide effort in 2005, when a photo of wreathadorned stones at the cemetery spawned interest from people across the country wanting to participate in similar tributes locally. Today, the tradition continues annually at Arlington as well as more than 2,500 locations throughout the country.

People can sponsor a wreath for a family member, a friend, neighbor or anyone else who is a veteran, Lehman said. “It is important to celebrate the lives that have been given to the freedom we all share,” noted Lehman, who

served with the Navy Seabees and is currently president of the Wrightsville Cemetery Association.

Along with sponsors for wreaths, volunteers will be needed to help lay the wreaths. Lehman encourages young people especially

to sign up to help so they have a better understanding of the sacrifices made by veterans.

Sponsor sheets for orders are available throughout Wrightsville at local businesses and at the Borough Office, 601 Water St., as well as at

the post office, 307 Hellam St. For more information, to purchase a wreath or to volunteer with the effort, contact Lehman at 717-992-2042 or cbphil71@gmail.com. For more information about Wreaths Across America, visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Workshop to focus on community gardens

Penn State Extension’s Lancaster County Master Gardeners will host “Gather, Connect and Grow: A Workshop for Community Gardeners” on Saturday, July 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The free event will be held at Penn State’s South-

east Agricultural Research and Education Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim, which is a working farm that is home to dozens of vegetable, field crop and environmental research projects and one of the largest flower trials in the country.

Last year, when Master Gardener Sue Hynicker began researching the county’s community gardens, she discovered that information was hard to find, and none of the gardens or gardeners were connected to each other. She learned that

· JULY 29TH

some of the gardens are managed by township staff members while others are organized by community leaders, and they vary in size, ranging from large fields divided into smaller areas to city lots that are between buildings.

The community gardening workshop is meant to bring everyone together to share resources. During the workshop, Hynicker will provide information she received earlier this year at a conference hosted by the American Community Garden Association. Additionally, a representative of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will provide details to help community gardeners find ways to locally donate any extra food they grow.

Other topics will include best practices, pros and cons of tilling, cover cropsand small space gardening. Tours of the Master Gardeners’ five idea (demonstration) gardens will be available.

To register for the workshop, email Hynicker at poodie53@comcast.net.

VFW, Auxiliary dedicate flagpole

The members of Hellam VFW Post 7045 and Auxiliary dedicated a flagpole in memory of the veterans in the Canadochly Cemetery. Jeff Reed, who has been charged with placing flags on the graves of veterans in the cemetery for the past 12 years, felt that the veterans should be honored with a flag and flagpole in recognition of their sacrifices for their country. In the oldest

part of the cemetery, Reed has discovered headstones from the Revolutionary War, the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, World War I and World War II, as well as headstones dated 1812.

In addition to Reed, the project was carried out by June Brown, Marvin Henise, Jerry Kirich, Pat Reed, Carol Rienhold and Grace Sultzbach.

Community improvement grants awarded

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity.

Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery

purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

The following local Pennsylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, York; and York Fresh Food Farms.

All funded projects address food waste prevention, reduction and or recovery and can include community composting, increased access to compost for agricultural producers, educational programs regarding food waste prevention, reduction and recovery, and diversion of food waste from landfills. Community gardens are eligible for funding but must have a food waste prevention, reduction or recovery component, such as education.

A banquet to battle breast cancer

Help the Fight will host its 14th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 9:30 p.m.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for the banquet, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 9. Registration forms may be acquired at www.helpthefight.org or by emailing helpthefight now@gmail.com. An early bird special will be offered to those who register by Thursday, Aug. 31.

The banquet will include a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m., as well as a benefit auction throughout the evening. Items available to bid on will include artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, furniture, children’s toys, clothes, designer handbags and weekend getaways. Prize drawings will also be held during the event; tickets for the drawings will only be available to purchase with cash.

The items in the auction are donated by various businesses and individuals in the community leading up to the banquet. Help the Fight invites anyone who wishes to make a donation to contact its office via

email or by calling 717-4557095. The deadline to make a donation is Friday, Sept. 15. “We need the community’s support through donations,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator for Help the Fight. “Anyone who does artwork, makes jewelry or wants to put together a gift basket can donate.”

Help the Fight, a nonprofit organization based in Mountville, uses the funds raised from its annual banquet to meet the financial needs of breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County. These activities can include assisting with medical bills, rent and mortgage payments and electric bills. Help the Fight also allocates money to provide medical screenings and mammograms for patients. During the banquet, a patient who has been assisted by the organization will share her experiences.

Help the Fight was founded in 2009 by Lynda and Dave Charles, who organized the first banquet shortly after. Lynda was inspired to create the organization following the breast cancer diagnosis of her co-worker and Dave’s sister. The treatments prevented Lynda’s sister-in-law from

working, and she was left without insurance or an income.

Lynda decided to organize a bake sale as Help the Fight’s first fundraiser, raising over $9,000.

Help the Fight has come a long way from being a bake sale. Over the last 14 years, the organization has continued to extend its reach and has raised over $1.1 million for breast cancer patients in the area. The annual banquet remains

its largest fundraiser of the year. “All of the money we raise stays right here in the Lancaster area. We really pride ourselves on that,” Dailey said. “We’re so fortunate to have local businesses and people be a part of this and positively impact the community.”
