A Full Belly And A Smile BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When a child walks into Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, not only can she pick up a free lunch, but she can also find fun and fellowship. The church, located at 205 N. Second St., offers the Summer Food Service Program weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The

Hitting The Trail? There’s An App For That BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ave you ever wondered how tall Chickies Rock is? Or what the White Cliffs of Conoy are made of? Wonder no more. If you’re out on a local trail, the answers to these questions and many more are right at your fingertips. The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA) recently partnered with students at Franklin & Marshall College to create an interactive mobile app that helps visitors explore historical, geological and natural facts along area trails. “When the pandemic shut down our facilities, outdoor recreation was still incredibly popular,” said Hope Byers, director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, which is managed by Susquehanna NHA.

expand it beyond a single trail so visitors and residents would have a single-source trail information app,” she said. Byers and Salvatore worked on expanding information to include in the app while the F&M students - Rafael Silva, Waleed Kamal Butt, Molly Sproul, Quang Anh Tran and Thu Do - developed the code. “It was obvious that these were passionate, dedicated students,” said Byers. “They managed the project so professionally and really treated it as if I was their client. They taught me how to use tools to keep the app functioning, send notifications and walked me through the app launch. Susquehanna NHA is so grateful for their dedication to create not just a prototype but a live application.”

Shannon Hadaway has a heart for helping others. The co-owner of Mixed Medley, a discount retail store in Columbia, wanted to support other businesses, individuals and nonprofits in her community. “I thought I could try and raise some money to help people, especially because so many people are struggling after this past year,” she stated. So, Hadaway sprang into action and began organizing a flea

“We were figuring out a way to direct people to what was available to them, but we couldn’t talk to them in person. Normally, we give out a lot of paper guides, but we couldn’t do that.” Instead, Byers and Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative, created a custom map of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail on the Google Maps platform. In early 2021, they were contacted by Franklin & Marshall College about developing a mobile app. Professor Ed Novak led a computer science course that taught students how to create fully functional Android app prototypes for community partners, Byers stated. Susquehanna NHA applied to participate and was chosen as one of four projects. “Our goal was to take the popular Google Map and

program is coordinated through Hands Across the Street at Columbia Presbyterian Church. “Everything is set up to be graband-go, but they are welcome to stay and eat here. We provide plenty of space for them,” said pastor Jesse North. “When it’s really hot out, we provide an opportunity for the kids to come in off the streets and into the air conditioning, have lunch and hang out.” Ilean Ball, who oversees the program with Rick Schmidt, noted that anywhere from 60 to 90 children could be served on a typical day. This year, in addition to the food, participants are enjoying spending time with Stephen Wisler, an Elizabethtown College student who is interning with the program. “I love kids. This is the best job I’ve ever had,” stated Wisler, who grew up in Wrightsville Presbyterian. “I feel like I’m making a difference, and I’m serving kids who really need this.”

Mary Mother of the Church will host a bazaar on Saturday, July 17, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 625 Union School Road, Mount Joy. The event will also feature two community service components - stuff the bus and a food bank collection. This is the first time the church is holding the stuff the bus collection, said bazaar committee co-chair Claudia. “It was brought to our attention at one of our ministry meetings that there are a number of displaced or homeless students in our area, so this is a way to alleviate some of the burden and help our community,” she stated. School supplies for children and youths in grades kindergarten through 12 will be collected, along with sweatshirts, sweatpants and children’s socks. The items will then be dispersed to the Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield and Columbia Borough school districts. The food bank collection is an extension of the church’s ongoing service project within its congregation. Food collected will benefit the Mount Joy Food Bank and the East Donegal Conoy Christian Food Bank. Everyone who donates

three items either to stuff the bus or to the food bank collection will receive three tickets for a basket giveaway drawing at the bazaar. The bazaar will include 30 vendors, offering everything from crafts to art. A Chinese auction will be held, and hundreds of baskets will be featured in a giveaway drawing. Items include restaurant gift cards, trips to local attractions and more. “This is truly a ‘love thy neighbor’ event,” said Claudia, who noted that the church typically holds its bazaar over three days in the fall but had to change plans this year due to the pandemic. “People have given so much to help us. It’s unbelievable how the community has come together.” A continental breakfast will be available on site, with items individually wrapped for grab and go, and lunch will be offered by church members. Lunch items include chicken corn chowder, meatball subs and walking tacos. A Miller’s Barbecue meal consisting of a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce and a roll will also be available. Proceeds from the bazaar will fund church ministry projects. “It’s going to be a fun, joyful event,” Claudia said. “Everyone is welcome.”

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer public events at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, July 10. Solar and Radio Astronomy will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Telescope Clinic will be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. A public Starwatch will be held from 8 to 10 p.m.

The events are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. If the sky is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. If it is completely cloudy or raining, the indoor activity of a screen astronomical presentation will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, call 717-759-9227 or visit Facebook for notice of cancellation. To learn more, visit www.astroyork.com.

Although Wisler is only at the program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, he’s making an impact, said Ball, adding, “After his first day here, the kids came in the next day asking for Stephen. He’s really reaching every kid on their level.” Wisler might spend time playing foosball with the children, building with Legos or even just doodling. “I love to draw pictures with the kids, and they love it,” he said. “I can cater to their interests. … I try to do things that engage their fine motor skills. I also try to offer activities that are diversified to keep their attention and get their brains going.” North said the food program offers a way for the church to connect with its community. “We think the kingdom of God is about serving other people,” he remarked. “The church ought to be a place that, if it

closed today, people would realize something is missing. We should be an integral part of the community. This program is a way we can meet a need.” The program will run through August, until school starts again, and it’s open to any school-age children in the community. “To a kid who is unsure about coming through the doors, I would say that this is a great place for anyone looking to have fun in an uplifting, positive environment,” Wisler stated. “We guarantee you’ll be walking away with a full belly and a smile.” The entrance to the Summer Food Service Program is located at the rear of the church, off of Centre Alley. The church holds a Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. For more information on Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, visit www.wpcpa.org.

Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their best-before date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Mont-

gomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their bestbefore dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Visit www.giantfood stores.com or www .martinsfoods.com for more information.

market and rummage sale to benefit Columbia Animal Shelter. The event will be held at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 10. “This is my first time organizing something like this,” she said. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but it’s coming together.” Hadaway’s business is located across the street from the shelter, and she is a frequent visitor to the nonprofit. “I have met quite a few of the volunteers who work there, and they are wonderful,” she remarked. “I thought, ‘How can I help this place?’ and then I realized there are so many people in the community I’d like to help.” Vendors at the flea market are charged a fee to rent their space for the day, with proceeds benefiting the shelter. Participants in the event include crafters, artists, small businesses and nonprofits

including Leo’s Helping Paws and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). “I also help to raise money for CASA yearly, so I wanted to include them as well,” Hadaway noted. “ We will also have a booth by Loyal Soul Collection. She does homemade skin care (products). We’ll have Scentsy and Paparazzi vendors.” The animal shelter will have a table set up as well, with merchandise including glassware and T-shirts for sale. “I wanted to do this event to raise awareness of some of the people in our community who are running their own businesses, while also letting people know about the nonprofits that are out there who need support,” Hadaway said. “It’s going to be a fun community day.” Space is still available for participants, she noted. For more information, call Hadaway at 717-443-2812 or email mixed-medley@yahoo.com.

When the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 merged with three other Manor Township fire companies to become Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR) in 2011, the Blue Rock Support Group (BRSG) was created. As an auxiliary to the new entity, BRSG coordinates Blue Rock apparel for BRFR members, hosts annual banquets, and contributes to the purchases of new apparatus. It also hosts the annual Washington Boro Tomato Festival. Last year’s event morphed into a food truck festival due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year’s Tomato Festival will return to its true form when it is held on Saturdays, July 10 and 17, from 3 to 9 p.m. The rain-or-shine event will take place at the Washington Boro Community Park, 2010 River Road. Stands will begin serving food at 3 p.m., two hours before the carnival games and live music will kick off. For the first time, Barnett’s Farm Market and Greenhouse will supply the tomatoes. Folks traditionally queue up for tomato sandwiches and, in recent years, BLTs. In 2017,

the BRSG sold 3,000 bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches during the two days of the festival. In addition to tomato sandwiches, there will be hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, soft-serve ice cream, corn soup, fruit, candy, and more. On July 10, the bands Border Line and Relics will perform songs from many genres, and two bluegrass bands, Hammer Creek and Barley & Steele, will perform on July 17. There will be opportunities to enter a drawing for a Vizio 50inch LED smart television, a Samsung Chromebook laptop, a Fitbit, or $100 cash prizes. “I’m looking forward to people coming out to enjoy the big community event and the food,” said BRSG member Richard Schock. Proceeds from the festival will benefit BRFR. Additional help is needed to make the Tomato Festival a success. Those interested in assisting in the kitchen or with the games may call Schock at 717951-6411 and leave a message. To learn more about the Tomato Festival, search for “Washington Boro Tomato Festival to benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue” on Facebook.

The Blue Rock Support Group will host the Washington Boro Tomato Festival on July 10 and 17.

Summer Vibes At PA Beaches BY WENDY ROYAL

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road.

Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times. Davis, a recipient of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues. Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which

will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.

During 2020, the amphitheater at Long’s Park sat empty. For 2021, Dave Wauls, president of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, is looking forward to filling the venue with eight different bands. “Everybody is excited, and we anticipate bigger crowds,” said Wauls, who noted that the food trucks will be back for hungry concertgoers. Concerts are planned beginning Sunday, July 11. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 29. Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to per-

form on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster. Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Award-winning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S. Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand

Estate Planning Tips Posted should work with a local professional. Establishing estate plans with the help of an attorney experienced in estate law will enable people to understand the state laws and probate process and help them determine the best way to ensure their wishes are documented accurately. Anyone who has an older will should talk to an attorney to make sure it is legitimate and notarized, as well as to make any necessary changes. People should appoint an executor, who is the legal representative that will be approved by the court and responsible for executing the will. The estate attorney will assist the executor through this process. It can be helpful to write an informal letter to the executor giving the location of important documents, such as one’s original will, asset statements, and debts, and contact information for one’s attorney,

financial planner, and funeral director. Those making estate plans should appoint a guardian for their minor children. Appointing a guardian in the will ensures that the children are taken care of per the parents’ wishes. Those making wills should also consider whether to include bequests to charities. These organizations include a church, a library, an alma mater, or another local cause that one values. Other estate planning documents to consider having are a power of attorney and a living will. If one becomes incapacitated, he or she will need someone trustworthy to handle his or her affairs, such as paying bills, until the incapacitated person is again able to do so themself. A living will informs one’s family and doctors of one’s wishes regarding health care. No matter what one’s age, these documents are important.

The In addition, people should consider adding or updating beneficiaries on plans such as life insurance, IRAs, and 401(k)s, which can be done through one’s financial planner or employer. These professionals can help to set up beneficiaries and contingent beneficiaries on retirement accounts and life insurance. People can also set up funeral arrangements with their funeral director to spare their family the stress of making these decisions. As people’s lives change, their estate planning may need to change also. People are advised to review their documents every few years or after a life event such as a marriage, the birth of a child or grandchild, a move to another state, the receipt of an inheritance, or an illness or disability of a spouse. Then they can decide if they need to contact their attorney or financial planner to make any adjustments.

Taking care of estate planning can give people confidence that their estate will be handled according to their wishes. Mountz & Kreiser Law Office in Columbia has offered tips for making these arrangements. Estate planning involves determining how one’s assets will be preserved, managed, and distributed after one’s death. It also plans for the management of one’s properties and financial obligations in the event that the person becomes incapacitated. Reasons for estate planning include preserving family wealth, providing for a surviving spouse and children, and leaving a legacy behind to a charitable cause. The most basic step of estate planning is writing a will. Leaving family and friends without a clearly written will in place can result in litigation or family conflict. When writing a will, people

Clothing can reflect an individual’s personality, culture, and preferences. Sometimes, people’s outfits are the first thing others notice about them. On Friday, July 9, and Saturday, July 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Penn Manor Theatre group will host a costume sale. The event will take place at Manorfield Farm, 1411 Prospect Road, Columbia. The costume storage room and some other theater spaces in Penn Manor High School (PMHS) were emptied for a deep clean in 2019. Considering the upcoming phase of the PMHS construction project, it was necessary to remove items from the campus entirely. At that time, Melissa Mintzer, assistant director of the PMHS fall play and spring musical and director of Thespian Troop 274, and Carole Shellenberger, director of the PMHS fall play and former director of Thespian Troop 274, asked theater families to take bags of clothing home. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work was paused, and the items have been in storage ever since. For the past two weeks, all the items in storage have been evaluated, and Mintzer and Shellenberger have identified several items to sell. The items for sale are from PMHS’ “costume inventory,” but consist of a collection of clothing that spans many styles and time periods.

“This sale will be the perfect opportunity for those interested in cosplay, vintage clothing, and formal event wear,” stated Mintzer. “We will be selling fur coats, ball gowns, trench coats, purses, and more.” All sales will be cash only. Buyers will be able to fill a bag for one flat fee. Certain items, such as authentic fur coats, will be priced separately. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Penn Manor theatre group ’s booster club. “I’m looking forward to finding good homes for our costumes,” said Shellenberger. “I experienced a lot of nostalgic feelings going through everything.” For some of the items that are specific to shows, Mintzer will contact other Thespian troupes and high school directors. Those items have been separated from the sale. “A local district is planning to perform “Beauty and the Beast,” so we’re happy to pay it forward whenever possible,” stated Mintzer. PMHS is planning to have a live performance for its fall play in November. It will be the first live theater production on the new stage. For more information, email melissa.mintzer@penn manor.net or carole.shellen berger@pennmanor.net. In the event of inclement weather, the costume sale will be pushed back by one week. Updates for the costume sale will be posted on social media. Search for “Penn Manor Theatre” on Facebook or @pmtheatre on Instagram.
