iced mint tea. An assortment of homemade desserts will also be part of the meal, including carrot cake and cheesecake with blueberries. Entertainment for the day will be a historical presentation by James C. Landis on “The Haldemans Down Yonder: Professor Haldeman and His Kin at Chickies and Columbia.” Landis is a native Lancastrian and has been researching genealogy and history within Lancaster County for more than 40 years. He is a longtime member, active researcher, and volunteer at both the Lancaster County Historical Society (now LancasterHistory) and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, where he serves on the Genealogy Committee, which plans the annual Lancaster Family History Conference. Since 1992, Landis has taught classes on a number of genealogical topics for both organizations, with Pennsylvania’s Colonial tax records being a special area of expertise. In recent years, Landis’ historical research has focused on the history of the Borough of Marietta. He has authored a number of articles and books on the history of the borough, given numerous lectures on local history, and documented the histories of nearly 300 historic homes in the area. To make reservations for the limited-seating Victorian Tea at the Haldeman Mansion, interested individuals may call event
chairperson Elaine Jackson at 717-426-3794 or 717-283-7740. The deadline to do so is Tuesday, July 16. There is a fee per person to attend the tea, with all proceeds benefiting the heating fund for the Haldeman Mansion. Jackson noted that once a heating system is installed in the historic building, the HMPS will be able to host events for the public year-round. The historic stone mansion, which was built in four stages and completed in 1811, was the birthplace of Samuel Haldeman, who became a prominent and respected scientist and scholar largely through self-study and made significant contributions in the fields of zoology and l i n guistics, according to www.ex plorepahistory.org. Samuel was the eldest of nine siblings. His brother Horace served in the Mexican and Civil wars, and their younger brother Paris traveled west by wagon to the California Gold Rush. The HMPS Victorian Tea planning committee members are Jackson, Sandi Bush, Vada Clemens, Arielle Kerr, Lauren Kerr, Roslyn Hurley, and Ellen Rhoads. All of the food will be prepared and donated by HMPS special events committee members including Jackson, Bush, Hurley, Rhoads, Doris Sites, and Tina Mark. For more information on the Victorian Tea and other events at the mansion, readers may visit www.haldeman-mansion.org.

Local Youths from pg 1 The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 15th annual Celebration of Achievement on June 2 in the Johnston Auditorium of the Lancaster Masonic Center. A total of 13 children graduated from the program. Heather Hinkel, director of the center, addressed the students and praised their work ethics. Faith Irwin and Sara Stinchcomb, who had previously graduated from the program, also addressed the students and shared their experiences of overcoming dyslexia as they graduated high school and began the next leg of their journey into college. Each graduate was given an keepsake autograph bear, as the bear is the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.’s mascot. Students thanked their
17 to 21 by participating in Creator Camp held at the Hill Campus to explore activities in the fields of STEM. STEM curricula focus on engaging students in those four disciplines. Creator Camp, sponsored by Workforce Development Board, consisted of four pods from which students could choose, including Snapology, Summer Science, Under the Sea, and Exploration Columbia. In Snapology, students built and programmed robots to compete in sportsthemed challenges throughout the week. Working in groups, students used Lego Mindstorms EV3 technology to build a robot and participate in relay races featuring various skills such as kicking a ball into a goal. Students used coding to control the robots’ movements to move through the series of obstacles. Snapology of Lancaster is a STEM education program that offers programs for a wide variety of ages and interests. Students who attended Under the Sea researched sharks and dolphins, conducted a science experiment to discover how a
shark’s liver works to keep it afloat, and created coral reefs. Students also constructed a shark cage to determine how much weight the cage could hold before being destroyed by pressure. Additionally, students made shark soap and cookies. Through a hands-on approach, students in Exploration Columbia encountered the outdoors and wildlife in their community. Students researched local animals, plant life, and the natural outdoors. Students also explored the benefits and consequences of a pipeline and then built their own pipeline using straws, tape, and string. Using Snapleaf, a computer application, students researched local trees through bark etchings and leaf samples. Students also studied bridges and built their own suspension bridge and tested its durability and strength. In Summer Science, students used everyday household items to create science experiments. Students made lava lamps, elephant toothpaste, slime, and unbreakable bubbles. They also grew crystals, built a Ferris wheel and a roller coaster, and used
tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary school through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of
Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers are available at http://childrensdyslexiacenteroflancaster.org or by searching for “Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers may call 717-481-5680 or email cdclancasterpa@gmail.com for information about the center.
varying liquids to create eruptions. Students ended the week by making ice cream. Additionally, 17 fourth-graders joined the middle school students to participate in a mini Creator Camp on June 19 and 20 to learn coding using Lego WeDo 2.0. Students built and coded robots at different speeds to pull varying weights at changing distances. As needed, students adjusted their robots to pull weighted sleds. They also learned to code their robots to make noises and play music. On June 19, Bio Ben, an exotic animal handler with the North Museum of Nature and Science, showed students reptiles and amphibians from the local area, including an American toad, a box turtle, and a corn snake. Students ended the week with an educational field trip.

Church Plans Craft Class
Naturalist Training from Monday, July 29, to Wednesday, July 31. Environmental educator Elyse Jurgen will guide students through activities in age-appropriate groups. Building Backyard Habitats, designed for students ages 9 to 11, will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Building Community Habitats, designed for students ages 12 to 14, will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. In Building Backyard Habitats, younger students will explore the farm through the eyes of their favorite critters. By gathering found materials on the grounds, participants will design a model of their creature’s habitat. Students can take these skills home to support wildlife in their own backyards. In Building Community Habitats, older students will collaborate with fellow naturalists to design a simulated “Horn Farm village” community master plan that meets the food, water, and shelter needs of both wildlife and people. Students will conduct a BioBlitz scavenger hunt on the farm grounds to gather baseline biodiversity data, then propose a solution for improving
the area’s ecological health. Participants should come ready to think deeply and solve real-life problems facing today’s communities. Junior Naturalists are invited - though not required - to bring a smartphone to participate in the BioBlitz activity, and they may download the iNaturalist app to get started. To register for the Junior Naturalist Training, interested individuals may visit https://hornfarmcenter.org/youth -programs/. Anyone with questions may call 717-332-8710 or email educationdirector@hornfarm center.org. The Horn Farm in Hellam Township has been continuously farmed for more than 250 years. The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education was established as a nonprofit at the Horn Farm in 2004. In 2016, a conservation easement was placed on the property, thus preserving the farm in perpetuity. The Horn Farm Center is committed to building and growing a healthy community through hands-on farming, gardening, and food preparation experiences.

Weis Markets Supports Senior Games
Tomato Festival from pg 1 created. As an auxiliary to the new entity, BRSG coordinates Blue Rock apparel for BRFR members, hosts annual banquets, and contributes to the purchases of new apparatus. It also hosts the Tomato Festival. “We do it for the community, said Dick Schock, who shares festival co-chair duties with Carl Miller and Bob Howell. “If we stopped, the community would kick up a fuss. While not much about the Tomato Festival has changed over the years - if it is not broken, why fix it? - a slight change has been made for this year’s event, which will be held on Saturdays, July 13 and 20, at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road. For the first time, the kitchen will open at 3 p.m., a full two hours before the carnival games and live music kick off. “They’re here at 3 o’clock anyway, Schock remarked. “We’re hoping to eliminate the lines, Miller explained. Folks traditionally queue up for tomato sandwiches and, in recent
years, BLTs. In 2017, the BRSG sold 3,000 bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches during the two days of the festival. Last year’s numbers were down because the first night had a lot of rain and not as many folks came out. “We covered our expenses the last night, Schock said. “If it rains, we will sell food. The two sandwiches feature Washington Boro tomatoes grown by The Tomato Barn. Typically, the festival kitchen goes through 250 pounds of tomatoes a night. This year’s variety will be popular local favorite Jet Star, said Tomato Barn co-owner Tyler Rohrer. The past few years, the festival featured a different variety because the Jet Stars were not ready early enough. Warmer weather in March and April this year have Jet Stars on schedule to be ripe for the festival, Rohrer said. Festival attendees may also purchase whole Jet Star tomatoes at the festival. In addition to the tomatobased sandwiches, the festival will sell sausage sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, chicken corn soup, fries, roasted corn, cotton candy, popcorn, funnel cakes, Italian ice, soft-serve ice cream, and plenty of fruit and cake. The kitchen will close at 9 p.m., although sales tend to die down around 8 p.m., the co-chairs noted. The festival will offer a variety of carnival games, a bounce house, and a barrel train. There will be opportunities to enter a drawing for a pair of 10-foot kayaks, a big screen television, an electronic tablet, or $100 cash prizes. Country band Borderline will perform on July 13, and Stu Huggens and the Black Hats will play on July 20. Both BRFR and the BRSG are staffed by volunteers. Additional help is needed to make the Tomato Festival a success. Folks may assist in the kitchen or with the games. Anyone who is interested may call Schock at 717951-6411 and leave a message. To learn more about the Tomato Festival, folks may find “Washington Boro Tomato Festival to benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue on Facebook.

The Pennsylvania SPCA has announced that it has been recognized by the Bissell Pet Foundation to receive a grant. The grant, which totals $10,025, will be used to alter (spay/neuter) adoptable animals at the organization’s Erie Avenue headquarters and Danville and Lancaster centers throughout the month of July. Every animal that is adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA,
regardless of location, is altered prior to leaving the facility, is upto-date on vaccines, and is microchipped. These costs are included in the adoption fee. The Bissell Pet Foundation’s grant will cover the cost of medical supplies and surgery for adoptable animals throughout the month of July. The Pennsylvania SPCA has been helping animals in Philadelphia and throughout the state
dating back to its founding in 1867 to protect horses. Today, the organization continues to rescue animals from cruelty and neglect, extending its reach throughout the state. Within the last year, the Pennsylvania SPCA has added low-cost spay/neuter services to both its Lancaster and Danville locations. Erie Avenue has long been providing the service as an affordable option to Philadelphia and the surrounding
region. For more information about adopting, donating, or volunteering, readers may call 215426-6300 or visit www.pspca.org. Bissell Pet Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to help reduce the number of animals in shelters through pet adoption, spay/neuter programs, microchipping, and foster care. The foundation is supported by donors and Bissell Homecare Inc.
“Meditations On Loss” Program Slated At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, the community is invited to gather at Mulberry Art Studios to experience an evening of music and poetry. Organizers hope that the event, titled “Meditations on Loss,” may offer the opportunity for a little healing for those who are grieving. The program will be a meditation on the tragedy of life, loss, and time, transformed by music, nature, and poetry. Justin Hopkins will read two poems: Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art,” a villanelle about the art of losing, and Donald Hall’s “Without,” a poem without punctuation on the loss of his wife. Christopher Brooks, violin, and Patrick White, bass, will interweave music among these poems, performing solo violin, solo electric bass, and violin and bass together, culminating with Bach’s “Sarabande” in D minor and Elliott Carter’s “Mnemosyne” for solo violin, which he wrote in memory of his late wife. The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education received a donation of $5,000 from Rutter’s Farm Stores. Christopher Hartman (left), Rutter’s director of fuels and forecourt, presented the check to Horn Farm executive director Alyson Earl (center) and board treasurer Shayne Smith (right) on June 25 at the farm, 4945 Horn Road, York. The money will support the Horn Farm’s expanding programs for children and youths in 2019. Upcoming programs will include a four-part youth summer program called “Where the Wild Things Are” and three-day Junior Naturalist Trainings. The donation also supports a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, through which Horn Farm staff members are teaching gardening practices to Boys and Girls Club staff at the clubhouse in Columbia. While class fees cover some of the costs of materials and pay for outside instructors, the Horn Farm funds all other activities with both materials and staff time.
