Walking Through Infertility And Grief Together By Chelsea Peifer

In 2010, Michelle McGovern went through the devastating agony of her first child, a son named Liam, being stillborn at 21.5 weeks. “They said it’s like being struck by lightning; it can never happen again,” recalled Michelle. As she and her husband, Mike, grieved the loss of their son, a co-worker whose daughter had experienced the loss of a child through a miscarriage told Michelle about Sarah’s Laughter, a nonprofit that offers faith-based support to couples struggling with infertility or the death of a baby. Since no groups were meeting locally then, Michelle signed up to receive emails from the organization, and as time went on she more or less forgot about Sarah’s Laughter. See Sarah’s Laughter pg 2

Michelle gave birth to her daughter, Violet, in 2012, with no complications. “She was a picture-perfect pregnancy,” noted Michelle. Her labor and delivery with Violet went quickly - something that Michelle laughs about now because of how much it reflects her daughter’s enthusiastic personality. In 2015 and 2016, however, Mike and Michelle suffered the loss of two children through miscarriages and again waded through the immense sorrow that accompanies such losses. To honor the legacy of Liam, as well as their other children, and to help other couples experiencing the loss of a child through stillbirth, the McGoverns donated a Cuddle Cot to The Women’s Place at Heart of Lancaster in 2016 and another to Women & Babies Hospital in 2017. “We did the two Cuddle Cot donations, but I wanted to do something more regularly (to help other women),” Michelle said. As Michelle rediscovered Sarah’s Laughter and began regularly listening to the organization’s podcast, which features interviews with people who understand infertility and child loss, she began to consider starting a group in Lancaster. “(Sarah’s Laughter founder) Beth Forbus will say on the podcast, ‘If you’re thinking about starting a group in your town, get in touch with us,’” Michelle said. “I told Mike, ‘I don’t think I can NOT do this now.’” So in September 2017, Michelle bravely took the plunge to start a local Sarah’s Laughter infertility and child loss support group. “I knew that there had to be a need,” she said. “I knew how much I struggled with my losses, and I didn’t want anyone to walk through that alone.” Any woman who is experiencing infertility or grief related to miscarriage or

stillbirth is welcome to attend a meeting of Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Community Fellowship Church, 200 Bethel Drive, Lancaster. “As women, (having children) is sort of a thing we expect we will be able to do, and when it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, it can be easy to feel shame. There are so many different scenarios, but we all have stuff in common and having those sort of ‘me too’ moments can be so helpful,” shared Michelle. “It’s the validation of having someone say, ‘I’ve thought that too. You’re not crazy.’ That validation lifts a weight off your shoulders.” In 2018, Michelle was thrilled to find out she was pregnant, but on May 24, 2018, the McGoverns’ daughter, Juliet Rose, was born still. They miss her greatly and continue to navigate that grief on a daily basis. Michelle encourages people who know someone experiencing infertility or child loss not to ignore it or pretend that it is not happening. “If you’re not sure what to say, just say, ‘I don’t know what to say because I don’t want to hurt you, but I want you to know that I care. I remember what you’re going through.’ And check in once in a while. “One thing I say (at Sarah’s Laughter) is that we don’t compare,” said Michelle, emphasizing that no matter what a woman’s story may be or where she is in her journey, she is welcome. “Walking through that door is the hardest part, but you’re not alone.” For more information on Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster, readers may visit www.facebook.com/SarahsLaughter Lancaster or www.sarahs-laughter .com/lancastercountypa.

Milagro House’s mission is to provide educational programming, housing and life skills training for women and their children who would otherwise experience homelessness. Thaddeus Stevens Foundation will receive a $1,500 grant to provide materials for hands-on projects during the oneday STEM-focused event at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual Women in Business

“Evita” from pg 1 Kyle Brubaker, George Chow, Kevin Conti, Mark Evans, Alison Hoke-Fitts, Ali Fleming, AJ Germaine, Kara Hartman, Kris Hess, Bonnie Northeimer, Amanda Richardson, Jackie Roberts, Tyler Schouppe, Dot Smith, and Sara Ulrich. “The cast overall is just phenomenal. From the little kids to the teenagers and adults, there’s not anyone on stage who isn’t giving their all,” stated Tighe Howey. “Everybody is so energized with this new venue.” Sponsored by the Eater Family Foundation, the main-stage Eater Theater has been under construction since the end of May and currently seats 156 people. SSC chairman of the board Kyle Brubaker noted that future renovations to the former church sanctuary will include adding balcony seating to further increase seating capacity. “I’m really excited about the new space and what it has to offer,” said Brubaker. The Gallery Stage, where SSC performed “Company” earlier this year, will be set up with concessions for sale and tables to allow patrons to mingle during intermission as well as before and after the show. In addition to being the home of SSC, the Marietta Center for the Arts serves as a hub for educational opportunities with art-focused classes offered year-round for children and adults. Going forward, the venue will be available for rentals, including weddings and gatherings of various sizes. To learn more, readers may visit https://mariettaarts.org.

Argentina. SSC actress Julia Tighe Howey, who will portray Eva, described the show as a rock opera that tells the story through songs like the mega-hit “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” “The music is fun and exciting and classic,” said Tighe Howey. A series of flashbacks follows Eva from her start as an impoverished child and teenager to how she became a woman of influence and power as the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. Eva was first lady from 1946 until she died in 1952 at the age of 33. “Eva is adored and worshipped by so many people. She came from absolutely nothing and worked herself to the top, not always making the best choices along the way, but I think her heart was always behind it,” said Tighe Howey. “It is one of those dream roles to get into, and it’s a little nerve-wracking,” she continued. “I admire her as a woman because she found a way to rise in a world where women just weren’t leaders. Her husband was in charge, but she kind of ruled the roost.” Additional cast members will include Kevin Ditzler as Juan Perón, Jared Korb as Che, Joe Kelly as Magaldi, and Cara Ditzler as the Mistress. Ensemble members include Stella Breese, Addison DeLuca, Elliot Ditzler, Norah Ditzler, Charlotte Evans, Emma Jahn, Liam Nornhold, Olivia Alberto, Charis Alkinburgh, Lily Chow, Sophie Eckman, Ricky Fitts, Ashtyn Hess, Jered Mackison, Cameron Snelbaker, Zac Snyder, Kendall Winters, Dave Anderson,

National titles at Loretta Lynn’s. The top finishers in Area Qualifiers and Regional Championships earn a gate position in the National Championship race at Loretta Lynn’s. Racers may enter a wide variety of classes, from minicycle classes for children as young as age 4 all the way up to a senior division for riders over age 50, as well as classes for women and classes for both stock and modified machines. In total, there are 35 classes of competition. Braxton will compete in the Mini Sr 1 and Mini Sr 2 classes. The course contains a variety of jumps, corners, and other obstacles

tracks and along the East Coast. Over the winter, Braxton participates in wrestling. “The Amateur National at Loretta Lynn’s is the best of the best motocrossers in America and around the world,” stated Tim Cotter, director of MX Sports. “Just being here makes you an elite racer and a top athlete. A solid finish at Loretta’s would give you instant national recognition and a possible professional career.” Many top professional motocross racers, including James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana, and Ryan Dungey, have won AMA Amateur

designed to test the skills and stamina of the racers. The motocross track is used only once a year for motorcycles, so there is no hometown advantage. Racers compete in three 15- to 20-minute races over the course of the week per class, sometimes in grueling temperatures. Braxton’s sponsors include Fivestar Power Sports, KB5 Industries, 230 Café, %100, Bell Helmets, Fly Racing, and Pitposse. The race will be broadcast live at www.RacerTV.com, and two highlight shows featuring the event will air on NBC Sports Network in the fall. Schreiber Reaches $1 Million Goal The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services, reached the milestone it was aiming for when the Schreiber Endowment Fund surpassed $1 million. Jaime Jackson (right), partner at Atlee Hall, a Lancaster-based law firm, made a $10,000 donation in June to put Schreiber over its goal. Jackson and James DeBord (left), Schreiber president, visited the infant room at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development on July 2 to mark the achievement. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position.
