Support Columbia Animal Shelter at Cruisin’ for Cats
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Ifyou would like to bring your entire family to an awesome free-entrance event where they can walk around and see the evolution of the automobile, this is a great opportunity to do so,” said Tammy Jalbert, executive director of the Columbia Animal Shelter, describing Cruisin’ for Cats. “There will be music, food, cars, bikes, chances to win prizes, and while you are here, you can see some awesome animals that are available for adoption. All proceeds go to the care of the animals here at the shelter.”
Cruisin’ for Cats will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., Columbia.
“We expect a wide variety of classic, vintage and new vehicles and bikes,” Jalbert said. “We already have a 1969 ambulance registered and a 1958 Panhead chopper, just to name a couple, and there are too many more just as cool to list. It really is one of my favorite events of the year.”
Along with cars, the show will feature a variety of food, merchandise for sale and prizes. “You can purchase
breakfast sandwiches hot off the grill,” Jalbert commented. “There will also be hamburgers, hot dogs and pulled chicken sandwiches as well as some yummy desserts available for purchase. We will have T-shirts, Koozies, a 50/50 (giveaway) and a (giveaway) table with all kinds of awesome donations from our local community.”
People will also have the opportunity to tour the shelter and visit with cats up for adoption.
Jalbert noted that the car show is a natural fit for the shelter.
“The shelter came about because of a dream Judy McKonly had to help as many cats as she possibly could,” she explained. “She and her husband were the founders of Kleen-Rite car wash, and together with The McKonly Family Foundation, this seemed like the best way to bring the two arenas together and support one great cause.”
Jalbert added that attending the car show helps support the mission of the shelter, providing funds for animal care, community outreach programs and a spay/neuter clinic.
“We continue to make strides in tackling cat overpopulation and offering affordable vet care, in huge
part due to great support from our community,” she stated. “This is our fifth annual car and bike show, and our goal each year is to make it even better than the last. Come out for a great time and see some awesome cars, trucks and bikes and enjoy a family-friendly event.”
There is a discount for preregistering for the car show by noon on Friday, July 28. Same-day registration will also be accepted. People may register on-site at the shelter or by visiting https://tinyurl.com/mu7tvc3u.
Tom Newnam is the perfect example of following your heart. The professional artist was inspired to begin painting after meeting Jack R. Shaub, although neither man was painting full time when they met. Jack, a court-appointed juvenile probation officer for York County, was Tom’s boss, and the two became fast friends.
One day, Jack invited Tom to his Marietta home to see the paintings he created in his spare time. It was a moment that would change Tom’s life.
“It’s hard to explain, or even believe, but I had a totally unexpected epiphany,” Tom said, recalling seeing Jack’s watercolors for the first time. “My soul informed me, strongly and clearly, that I was also called to be an artist, which completely blew my mind as I knew nothing about painting.”
Jack was known for creating watercolors that reflected what he saw on his hikes around Mariettatrees, landscapes, streams, buildings and more. He soon became a mentor to Tom, who in turn became a fulltime artist. The two stayed friends for 20 years, until Jack’s death from cancer at age 53 in 1996.

Susquehanna Stage will present “Children of Eden”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Children of Eden” is a musical about relationships, specifically the relationships between parents and children, told through two Bible stories.
“It’s a reinterpretation of the creation narrative as well as the flood narrative … exploring the way that God’s parentship of humans interacts and how His influence is passed down through
generations,” explained Ethan Goss, who portrays Adam and Noah in the show, noting that act one focuses on the Garden of Eden and act two is about the ark.
“Children of Eden” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from July 21 through Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.
The show features the music of Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote See Eden pg 3

“Most people say they can see Jack’s style in my work,” Tom noted. “I’m a little more diverse, both in using more colors and in the subject matter. I paint animals, landscapes and flowers.”
The artwork from the two friends will be showcased at Garth gallery, 22 S. Second St., Columbia, in an exhibit called “Tom Newnam/Jack Shaub Watercolors.” It will open with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 21, and will be on display through the first week in September.
The exhibit came about after Jack’s son, Matt, told Tom he had several of Jack’s paintings and wasn’t sure what to do with them. Tom approached Garth owner Cle Berntheizel about doing a show at the gallery where Tom has often shown his own work. Both framed and unframed watercolors will be on display, and the artwork will also be for sale.
“To me, this whole exhibit is inspirational,” Tom comment-
ed. “People who come to see it can expect to be inspired by the truth that you can follow your dreams. What does your heart say you were meant to do? Because of Jack’s mentoring and guidance - and kindness and patience - I went on to have a successful art career.”
Tom has also written two books about his journey to self-discovery, “Memo From Your Soul” and “Try Softer.”
He emphasizes that although the exhibit is an art show, it’s really about much more than art. “Don’t come to this art show just because you love art and maybe want to try painting for yourself,” he stated. “Come to this art show because you want to be reminded to wholeheartedly follow your own dream to become a horse rescuer, or teacher, or mechanic, or farmer, or seamstress, or scientist, or nurse, or politician or seashell collector - whatever brings you the most fulfillment! That’s the point of the show.”
Trout Unlimited hosts fishing derby
A fishing derby organized by the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited (DTU) in collaboration with the Lancaster
Special Olympics took place on June 17. The event was hosted at Hugh Wenger’s residence in Elizabethtown and
planned by lead organizers Wenger; Claire Landis, president of DTU; and Tony Watts, a member of the Special Olympics leadership team.
A total of 10 athletes, accompanied by their guests, participated in the derby, receiving assistance from 29 DTU volunteers. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (F&BC) provided fishing rods, while Kinsey’s Outdoors supplied the bait.
To facilitate the smooth movement of supplies and assist guests, Messick’s Equipment offered a utility transport vehicle. Andy Desko, aquatic resource program specialist from the Pennsylvania F&BC, acquired a special fishing event permit and provided guidance for the event.
The derby began a 9 a.m. in the well-stocked pond, showcasing the contestants’ angling skills. The contestants successfully caught a variety of species, including catfish, bluegills and smallmouth bass. By noon, the Olympians had collectively reeled in more than 140 fish, with Caroline Whitson leading the pack by catching 25 fish. The attendees also had the opportunity to observe the red-winged blackbirds, listen to the croaking bullfrogs and catch glimpses of turtles surfacing from the water.
At noon, DTU member Stan Shenk and his crew served lunch to all the participants. The meal was accompanied by snacks provided by Utz and Pepperidge Farm.

The concert is free, but a freewill offering will be received to support the musical group.
Light refreshments will follow the service. Attendees should bring a lawn chair for
seating. The event will take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors.

the songs for “Wicked,” “Godspell” and “Pippin,” among other musicals, said Mike Kohler, who plays Father in “Children of Eden.”
“This show is basically about choices and how choices can benefit you or get you in trouble and the consequences of choices,” Kohler said, referencing Eve taking a bite from the apple in the Garden of Eden as an example. “And Father, who is the God-like character, his character and his personality wears away as he sees the things that he’s created go against him or make bad choices, and it wears him down.”
Audiences of all ages will find something to love about the show, said Nichole Witman, who portrays Eve and Mama Noah. “There’s going to be a lot of things happening on stage to keep little kids engaged, and then there’s awesome music,” she stated.
Kohler added that the production includes a variety of special effects and unique props, including elaborate costumes to represent the animals in the ark. “The animals going into the ark is a
pretty special moment,” he said.
Witman emphasized that although the show might not be well-known to audiences, it will make an impact. “It’s really a hidden gem,” she said. “The music is wonderful. … It’s almost an opera. There is dialogue, but the majority of the show is sung.”
Susquehanna Stage’s production of “Children of Eden” features a cast of 30, including children age 8 and up.
“The rest of the cast are what’s known as ‘storytellers,’” Kohler remarked.
“They play a lot of other
roles, but they are also kind of like a Greek chorus in telling the story and keeping the action moving. It’s an interesting use of the chorus.”
He said audiences should be prepared not only to be entertained at the show, but also to leave with some questions to ponder.
“They can expect to be moved, and they can expect to be surprised,” he said.
Witman agreed, adding, “It’s very hopeful and thought-provoking.”

A charity giveaway drawing will take place at noon. This year, all proceeds from the sale of the giveaway drawing tickets will go to The Potter’s House, a local Christian residential program to help people recover from addiction, find employment and housing, and start renewed lives.

Wagman earns honors
Wagman Heavy Civil was recognized as one of America’s outstanding Navy Reserve employers for 2023 during the 2023 Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE). This year’s event was held on June 7 in San Diego, Calif.
Greg Andricos, president and COO, and Jerry Whitlock, design-build manager for Wagman Heavy Civil, accepted the award on the company’s behalf. Whitlock is a commander in the Reserve Navy Civil Engineer Corps and has served for the past 23 years, including four years enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, two years enlisted in the U.S. Army, one year commissioned in the U.S. Army and the remainder commissioned in the U.S. Navy. Whitlock deployed twice, for a total of three years.
The annual NERE recognizes civilian employers for their outstanding support to Reserve sailors in their organization and the United States national defense. It is an allday event that includes tours and demonstrations on Navy ships, aircraft and facilities, followed by an evening reception. Employers are nominat-
ed by their reservists for the award.
In addition to the company award, Andricos, along with Glen Mays, Wagman Heavy Civil’s vice president and general manager for Virginia Operations, each received an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve certificate from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, acknowledging them as patriotic employers, supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and military Reserve forces. Andricos, Mays and Whitlock are all alumni of the Virginia Military Institute, which has a mission to produce citizensoldiers - men and women educated for civilian life and also prepared to serve their country in armed forces. Center to offer new exhibit, lecture
Susquehanna National Heritage Area has announced a new exhibition and a related lecture, which will provide information about how the coal industry changed both the Susquehanna River and the lives of those who lived on the riverbanks.
Lynn Smoker, the collector and historian behind Columbia Crossing River Trails Center’s “Ice Harvesting” and “Hunting and Fishing” exhibits, has created a new exhibition that tells the story of anthracite coal on the Susquehanna River. Visitors are invited to view Smoker’s vast collection of tools, art, photographs and more. The exhibit will be on display at Columbia Crossing, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, through March 2024 and is free to the public. Columbia Crossing is open on Tuesdays through Sundays. Visit www.susqnha.org for seasonal hours.
In addition, Smoker will offer a related lecture on Wednesday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets can be purchased at www.susq nha.org/events or by calling 717-449-5607.
Anthracite coal was discovered in massive quantities across the northern branch of the Susquehanna River, and the region was heavily mined in the 19th century and early 20th century. Canal boats filled with coal jammed the river at Columbia. The anthracite coal was essential to the nearby pig iron furnaces but was also shipped all over the country. The anthracite coal industry changed the Pennsylvania economy and environment.

The exhibition is presented in both English and Spanish and uses fossil imagery and lifesize illustrations, with strategically placed images and text for both children and adults on panels as large as 8 by 19 feet. Items from the North Museum’s collections of eggs, nests, taxidermy birds and fossils add

Master Gardeners to offer classes
Two different Master Gardener demonstration gardens will be featured in two events on Saturday, July 29, at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
The morning session, “Getting It Right the First Time,” will be offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. to inform home gardeners how to build and maintain healthy soil using regenerative techniques as well as composting and mulches. Master Gardeners will also talk about what plants need to thrive, the role of pollinators and keyhole and
square foot gardening styles. Herbs, edible flowers and tomato sampling are also topics planned for this workshop.
The afternoon presentation from 1 to 2:30 p.m. is titled “Natives - Something for Everyone.” The native plant demonstration garden showcases a wide variety of species with bloom times ranging from early spring into late fall and early winter. Attendees will move through the garden to learn more about designing a native garden and selecting native plants for varying space and growing conditions.
Presenters will demonstrate strategies home gardeners can use to keep spaces groomed for curb appeal. Attendees also will learn about the ecological impact native plants provide to native bees and other pollinators and how to support them in a home garden.
The events will be held at Penn State’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Education Center at 1446 Auction Road, Manheim. This working farm is home to dozens of vegetable, field crops and environmental research projects, along with one of the largest flower trials in the country.

Awards presented to Scout leaders
The Susquehanna District, a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, held its annual awards dinner on June 14 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Willow Street. The annual dinner recognizes leaders who have exemplified the Scouting ideals and program in their Scout units or leadership within the district.
The District Award of Merit is the top volunteer award the district can present. Chet Bowen from Troop 84 and Fred Frey from Troop 146 received this award at the dinner.
Bowen was the committee chair for Pack 93 for six years and has been an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 84 for five years and a member of Crew 162 for two years. He is also a unit commissioner. He is currently the Pennsylvania Dutch Council spring sales chair and the district committee membership chair. He was a Wood Badge staff member in 2022. He has served in many other volunteer positions within the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, as well. Bowen has been involved with Scouting almost his entire life, and he has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, is a Vigil member in the Order of the Arrow, and received the James E. West award.
Frey is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 146, the committee chair of Pack 146 and an assistant roundtable commis-
sioner for the district, a role in which he is instrumental in creating recruitment materials and incentives. He also serves on staff for the College of Commissioner Science and often volunteers for district events like the Klondike Derby. Frey has earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College of Commissioners Science, Arrowhead Honor as a commissioner, and Scouter’s Key, and he is an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow.
Other volunteer leaders were presented with awards. Spark Plug Awards went to Corey Wilson, Troop 76; Andrea Dougherty, Pack 82; Mary Kay Vasold, Troop 82; Melissa Kelshaw, Pack 37; and Jim Rayfield, Troop 48.
Leader of the Year awards were also presented. The winners were Joseph Way, Troop 349 Boys for Scouts BSA; Tyffany Valotta, Pack 148, for Cub Scouts; Julie Pedrick, Pack and Troop 82, Scouter of the Year; and Marion Glasby, unit commissioner, Commissioner of the Year.
Unit Leader Award of Merit winners included Timothy Schmitt, Troop 349 Boys; Matthew Vazquez, Pack 37; and Daniel Dennis, Pack 82; and Kenneth Neumann, Troop 393. The Scouters Training Award went to Kenneth Neumann of Troop 393, and the William D Boyce New Unit Awards were presented to Kandis Sharp,
Troop 76 Girls; Diana Urbine, Troop 76 Girls; Howard Urbine, Troop 76 Girls; and Donald Wilson, Troop 76 Girls.
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) provides a youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Boy Scouts of America, provides support and Scouting opportunities for over 2,600 youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The council partners with 130 community organizations and has more than 2,800 active
adult volunteers.
BSA programs are divided by age and activity. Cub Scouting is for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade, Scouts BSA is open to young men and young women in grades six through 12, and coed Venturing and Sea Scouting are available for young men and young women ages 14 through 20.
