ats and cars will come together at Columbia Animal Shelter when the organization hosts the Cruisin’ for Cats Car Show. The event will be held at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., on Saturday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, July 31. “This is our fourth annual event, and each year, it’s gotten bigger and better,” said Tammy Jalbert, executive director of the shelter. “The first year, we had 55 cars participate. Last year, we had 200 cars, and our goal for this year is between 250 and 300 cars. That’s about the maximum we could host in the space.” All types of vehicles, including cars, trucks and motorcycles, are invited to participate in the event. “We have everything from vintage cars to newer models,” Jalbert said. “We had an old ambulance last year, and it won a prize.” The top 20 cars will win awards in a variety of categories, including Best in Show, she said. The event will also feature a basket giveaway, music from a DJ and food. “The shelter will be open, so people can come in and take a look,” Jalbert noted. Proceeds from the event will benefit programs at the shelter, including a new wellness clinic.
hopeful that this year’s event will do the same. “We’d like everybody from the community to come out,” she said. “It’s a really great family event, and it’s free to attend. Come out on a Saturday, check out the cars, enjoy some food, possibly win a prize or two. It’s really fun for the whole family.” Registration for participation in the car show will be accepted at the event, but there is a discount for people who register ahead of time. The event will take place at the Hellam Township building, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Motorcycles and more can be found at Cruisin’ for Cats.

Hosting a car show is a perfect fit for the Columbia Animal Shelter, Jalbert explained, because the shelter was created through the Harold and Judy McKonly Family Foundation. “They were the founders of Kleen-Rite Corporation, which provides supplies for the car wash industry, so it really seems fitting that we’re doing a car show,” she stated, adding that it was a lifelong dream of Judy’s to open an animal shelter. “Without the car wash business, this place wouldn’t exist.” Last year’s car show drew a large crowd not only of participants but of spectators as well, and Jalbert is

Corina Mann, township manager, said National Night Out will offer a variety of family-friendly activities. “We’ll have fire trucks from Wrightsville and Hellam, as well as the ambulance and police cruisers,” she noted. South Central Search and Rescue - Search 93 will be on hand as well as members of Eastern York County Emergency Management Agency. “We’re going to have our K-9 unit giving demonstrations,” Lotier said. “We’ll also have lots of free food, including popcorn that we’ll be popping on-site, hot dogs, chips, fruit and drinks.” Bayou Snow will be on-site offering food for purchase, live music will be presented by the Kinard Family Band and a Scooby-Doo bounce house will be available
for children. Critter Connections will provide hands-on activities with reptiles and amphibians, Lotier said. “We’re going to have lots of door prizes, and we’ll be handing out balloons,” he commented. “We’ll have various churches and civic groups here as well. Kids will be able to see the police cars and fire trucks up close and ask the emergency responders questions.” A tent will be set up to sell T-shirts and other items to benefit the K-9 unit. The National Night Out relies on the support from the community, Lotier said. “Many local businesses donated for us to be able to do this,” he stated, noting that Sue’s Market donated hot dogs and rolls and Rutter’s supplied some of the drinks, among
other donations. “We really couldn’t do this without their support.” Along with fun activities, the National Night Out will give community members the chance to learn more about what the various township departments do and to stay up-to-date on township happenings. The police department, for example, recently became accredited by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, Lotier said. “It’s important for the community to know this, because it lets people know the police are doing things the right way,” he shared, noting that accreditation requires the department to follow a series of strict rules and regulations. Lotier said he hopes National Night Out will draw a large attendance because he wants the community to know first responders are there for them. “Come out with your family for some free food and activities and learn a little more about us,” he said.
Senior Commons To Present Live Music The community is invited to enjoy a summer evening on the lawn on Tuesday, July 26, at 6 p.m., at Senior Commons at Powder Mill, 1775 Powder Mill Road, York, featuring free musical entertainment from the Emigsville Band. Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The Emigsville Band performs tunes of the past decades including Elvis, the Beatles and more. Complimentary frozen dessert, courtesy of Senior Commons, will be served. There will also be an opportunity to win gift baskets. The fundraiser will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Miztel’s advice for the winning team? “Your team can be as big as you like, but think about how many people you want to split the prize money with,” she said. “And use the internet once you have the clue. You’re going to need it.” She also noted that tickets are limited, so the pool of participants will be on the smaller size, increasing the chances of winning. After the Pennsylvania hunt, Mitzel is organizing statewide hunts in Delaware on Saturday, Aug. 13, and Maryland on Saturday, Aug. 20. Next year, she hopes to expand the treasure hunt to even more states. “This treasure could be right in your town,” she said. “It could be yours for the taking.” To sign up for Treasure Adventures, visit www.my treasureadventures.com. Tickets may be purchased through Friday, Aug. 5, or until sold out. For more information, call 717-500-1199 or email info@mytreasure adventures.com.

The event is hosted by Tammy Mitzel, who founded Treasure Adventures in 2020. “I am so excited to be hosting (the) treasure hunt as a way to give back to three great charities that have supported my own family,” said Mitzel, who lives in Wrightsville and is the parent of a Wish child. “They have given us so many wonderful lifelong memories. … This is our way of paying it forward so that these groups can continue to bring happiness and hope to families who need it most.” Mitzel got the idea for Treasure Adventures after participating in a nationwide treasure hunt sponsored by the owner of Jelly Belly a couple of years ago. “I was disappointed, not that I didn’t win, but that I didn’t figure it out,” she stated. “I don’t like to give up.” In 2013, Mitzel participated in “Wheel of Fortune,” and she won big. “I’ve always been into brain teasers and word puzzles,” she said. “I love to challenge my mind.” For the August hunt, participants will sign up online, where they will receive a list of rules and regulations. There is no limit to the number of people who can be on a team, Mitzel noted, and the prize token will be hidden somewhere in Pennsylvania. “It will not be hidden somewhere dangerous. It will be in a public place, not on private property,” she remarked, adding that accommodations will be made for people with disabilities who want to participate if they contact Mitzel ahead of time for details. At 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, a riddle will be released to all participants, and the hunt will begin. If no team finds the treasure that day, additional clues will be released every 24 hours until someone wins.

Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards in York, in partnership with the City of York, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association, and the Watershed Alliance of York, are launching the 2022 Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest, a project to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. Each painted storm drain will contain an environmental message connecting stormwater runoff, storm drains, and water pollution. Art submissions are being accepted from artists age 14 and up who currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The deadline for entries is Sunday, July 24. Guidelines for submitting art can be found at www.street2creek.org. A panel of local judges will judge the artwork, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three artists. The winning artists will complete their art at
three selected storm drains in downtown York. The new paintings will become part of the 18 storm drain murals that can be found between the Codorus Creek and the Royal
Square District. This project was funded by York Water Company and the Street 2 Creek partners. For more information about the Street 2 Creek

Research Farm Opens To Public Penn State Extension’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SEAREC), 1446 Auction Road, Manheim, will be open to the public until Wednesday, Aug. 31, from dawn to dusk. This research farm is the site of dozens of vegetable, field crop, and environmental research projects; one of the largest flower trials in the country; and five Master Gardener-designed idea (demonstration) gardens. Master Gardener volunteers have designed, planted, and cared for five idea gardens: native plants, vegetable and herb, butterfly, potager, and raised beds. Members of the public can use these gardens to learn gardening techniques, discover novel plants, and get fresh ideas for their home and community gardens. There are also gardens at the pergola and the Welcome and Research Centers, as well as in-ground perennial and annual trials. The farm also includes Blooms and Butterflies - also known as Bees, Bugs, and Blooms - a large, established native plant trial plot that is 10 years old. Through the years, a variety of research projects have been conducted in the plot, and
Master Gardener volunteers continue to monitor and track pollinator activity there. Anyone who wants to beat the heat should visit early in the day as shade is limited. The best opportunities to view butterflies, bees, and other pollinators will be on warm, sunny days. Site maps and educational materials are available at the Welcome Center; visitors are asked to return the maps when they have finished their visit. Penn State’s Master Gardener program has been serving Lancaster County since 1988. Approximately 110 volunteers educate the public on sustainable horticulture and environmen-
tal stewardship through a Garden Hotline, webinars and classes, demonstration gardens, and poison prevention programs in schools. To reach the Lancaster County Garden Hotline, call 717-394-6851 or email LancasterMG@psu.edu.
