t may only be August, but Phil Lehman has Christmas on his mind. More specifically, he’s focused on honoring veterans in Wrightsville through the Wreaths Across America program. Lehman, who is president of the Wrightsville Cemetery Association, is organizing the program at Fairview Cemetery in Wrightsville and is working with Historic Wrightsville Inc. to hold the program at the Mount Pisgah and Union cemeteries as well. Although the official wreath laying won’t take place until Saturday, Dec. 17, orders are being taken now for wreaths. “As a vet, it’s been on my heart to do this in Wrightsville for some time,” said Lehman, who served with the Navy Seabees. “I went to a

Worcester, a 12-year-old paperboy for the Bangor Maine Daily News, won a trip to Washington, D.C. Arlington National Cemetery made a lasting impression on Morrill, who later became the owner of Worcester Wreath Company. In 1992, with a surplus of wreaths near the end of the holiday season, he remembered visiting Arlington and arranged for wreaths to be placed in the cemetery. The idea became a nationwide effort in 2005, when a photo of wreathadorned stones at the cemetery spawned interest from people across the country wanting to participate in similar tributes locally. Today, the tradition continues annually at Arlington as well as more than 2,500 locations throughout the country.

Leah Brighter, who lives in the Hempfield area, has been taking lessons at Pulse Dance Studio in Lititz since she was 6 years old, and during that time, she has been on the studio’s competitive team. as part of Youth Music Abroad, an honors band made up of students from throughout York County. The band members traveled for about two weeks in late June and early July. “We started in London, then we crossed the English Channel and visited Brussels in Belgium,” said Keith Gromis, high school band director and trip chaperone. “Then we traveled to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. After that we traveled to the Black Forest region of Germany and stayed in the countryside near Freiburg. After Freiburg, we ended our trip in Paris.” Gromis said this is the first time in many decades - and perhaps ever - that Eastern York students have participated in the program. Joining Gromis on the trip were students Braden Bolton, Eryn Boyer, Michael FelicianoVidot, James Hammel,

The 15-year-old Lancaster Catholic High School student competed against nine others in the 13 to 15 age category. “It was incredible,” said Brighter, who won for her jazz solo routine. “I was not expecting to win (because) others (in the contest) were more experienced in this area.” Brighter was not judged on a single performance alone. According to Jennifer Olsen, owner of Pulse, Brighter was evaluated by Dancers Inc. staff throughout the competition. “They watched her all week,” said Olsen, who noted that staff members were looking to see how Brighter interacted with her teammates, teachers, and parents. “(Dancers Inc.) will take her on the road to represent their company, so they are looking for the whole package.” Brighter reported that staff

Olsen has secured two aerial arts teachers, one of whom works with Cirque du Soleil. “For dancers to be able to add (aerial arts) to their resume is awesome,” noted Olsen. “All of our competitive teams did well,” said Olsen.

“ We won a choreography award and we got top 10 finishes.” Olsen was also impressed with the support the other students gave Brighter the night she won her crown. “(The students) were so important to the week,” she said. “Leah had a very special moment, but everyone did well.” More information about Pulse offerings may be found at www.pulsedancestudio.com.

First Mountville Maker’s Market Planned The first Mountville Maker’s Market will be held at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission and parking will be free of charge. Over 100 vendors will be present, as well as several food trucks and nonprofits from the area. The event is coordinated by entrepreneur Megan Shank, who first started working with the Mountville pool while looking for locations that would be open to hosting the market. “Driving down Columbia Avenue, I remember thinking, ‘That would be the perfect spot,’” said Shank. “It was a

long process to get the date approved, and I hope to make it an annual event.” Shank runs The Shank Shoppe from her home in Marietta, where she makes custom-designed pieces of apparel and home décor and plans events. “I’ve done smaller events but recently started dabbling into markets,” she said. “One of my biggest passions is celebrating what is local, and our area has a lot of talented artists and makers. So often you have to travel far for markets, so I thought, ‘Why not bring it here to celebrate Lancaster?’” The Crafted Cauldron, Lavender Lacy, The Schell Shack and LoriAnn’s ART, among other vendors, will sell their wares. Food will be available to purchase from

food trucks such as J&J Famous Eats, Premium Shaved Ice and The Crazy Train. Shank worked in the corporate world for over a decade before the COVID-19 pandemic and her daughter’s medical needs necessitated her transition to a full-time stay-at-home mother. “I was always creating on the side when I had time, but becoming a stay-at-home mom gave me more time and opportunity to create, and things really took off,” said Shank. “I started doing weddings, flowers and whatever people needed.” The Shank Shoppe has made custom T-shirts for the Manheim Township cheerleaders and frequently provided consulting and organizing services for other businesses. Recent endeavors include organizing the Marietta Christmas in July,

drawing 57 vendors total. Shank is currently on the lookout for an indoor space to hold a fall and Christmas market this upcoming holiday season and planning multiple events for 2023. The Shank Shoppe will also hold a Maker’s Market and Food Truck Festival on Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. “Events like these allow people to connect, network and celebrate businesses in the area,” said Shank. “All of my life I’ve been into volunteering and helping people; I love being able to benefit the community and create.” For more information, contact Shank at TheShank Shoppe@gmail.com. Abram Hoover, Ryan Knuth, Cassidy Laius, Matt Thomas and Nathan Strausbaugh. In total, 93 students from York schools participated in the trip. Gromis explained that being chosen for Youth Music Abroad is an honor. “Students are first recommended by their band director (based) on their character and performance ability in their home school,” he stated. “Once in the group, students have to complete an audition for part assignment in the group.” The trip featured opportunities for the students to perform in unique spaces, Gromis said. “We played concerts in London, in a park outside the king’s palace in Brussels, in a picturesque German village and in the

Luxembourg Gardens in the center of Paris,” he remarked. “I personally enjoyed talking with folks that would come up during the concert to ask where we were from and offer compliments about how great the group sounded and how appreciative they were that we were there to make music.” Gromis noted that participating in Youth Music Abroad is just one opportunity the members of the band have had recently. “In the past couple of years, the band students have been doing some really great things, working hard to build up the program, participating in PMEA festivals and honors bands, etc.,” he said. “Their efforts are noticed by others.”

Behavioral Health Grants Announced The Touchstone Foundation has awarded its Children’s Behavioral Health Grants. This year, the Touchstone Foundation awarded $55,000 to five local organizations to increase accessibility and equity to youth mental wellness resources in Lancaster County. The recipients are Bench Mark Program, Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School, YWCA Lancaster, Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, and Samaritan Counseling Center. Children’s Behavioral Health Grants provide an opportunity for Lancaster County organizations to receive funding support for programs that help remove barriers for families and young people when accessing mental health care. Barriers can include the locations where mental health services

are provided, transportation, language barriers, cultural sensitivity, and traumainformed mental health care. The Bench Mark Program serves youths in Lancaster County through physical wellness programs. The program started offering free personal training services to youths identified as at-risk by local high schools and community organizations. Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School provides counseling services for its students and strives to create a learning environment that develops students’ emotional intelligence in tandem with cognitive intelligence. With the grant, the school will be able to hire a temporary fulltime school counselor during the summer months. The YWCA Lancaster is increasing prevention education in its Sexual Assault Pre-

vention and Counseling Center. As the rape crisis center for the county, the center provides primary prevention education programs to the community. The Healthy Relationship Project (HRP) is a researched-based, traumainformed, and age-appropriate child sexual abuse prevention curriculum created by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont. The YWCA delivers the programs directly in schools to lower access barriers for children and families. CAP of Lancaster County hosts Play and Learn programs to serve families with children birth to age 5 in communities in Lancaster County that have limited availability of high-quality early learning opportunities. Each session consists of child-directed play, caregiver learning, a coordinated group activity, and intentional space for care-

givers to build social capital, as well as time for caregivers to explore resources with a focus on family well-being. Samaritan Counseling Center is expanding its Teen Hope program. Teen Hope is a mental health awareness program screening students for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. The funding from the Touchstone Foundation will help Teen Hope address the needs of the community by updating its video for parent and student education so that internal training modules will have clear, concise, and consistent expectations and protocols for staff, interns, and volunteers in the schools. Touchstone Foundation is a nonprofit organization that focuses on elevating the mental well-being of youths and children in Lancaster County. To learn more, visit www.touchstonefound.org.

“The program talks about the idea of ‘remember, honor and teach,’” Lehman stated. “Wreaths Across America is about remembering the sacrifice these veterans have made by serving, honoring their service and teaching children what these vets have done and continue to do for their freedom.” Lehman noted that Fairview Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 800 veterans. About 50 veterans are laid to rest in Mount Pisgah Cemetery, and there are seven veterans buried in Union Cemetery. Fred Smith, who is working with Lehman on the project, noted that the wreaths will replace American flags at the veterans’ graves, which were placed there on Memorial Day. “The wreaths will be a

nice way to mark veterans’ graves and easily identify them in winter,” he stated. Lehman and his committee are working with the American Legion Post 469 and other civic and community groups to host Wreaths Across America in Wrightsville. “We hope people will participate in purchasing a wreath for a veteran, and we want people to come out and participate on the day we distribute the wreaths as well,” Lehman said. “We’re doing all of this to honor our veterans.” For more information, to purchase a wreath or to volunteer with the effort, contact Lehman at 717-992-2042 or cbphil71@gmail.com. Orders must be placed by Tuesday, Nov. 8.
