“This is a picnic in the cemetery,” said Kathy Hohenadel, describing Fête en Noir. “And we ask people to dress in black if theyFêtecan.”en Noir is a fundraiser for the Mount Bethel Cemetery, noted Hohenadel, who is a board member of the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery and the cemetery itself. The event will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at the cemetery, 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Seating is limited for the Fête en Noir, and a discount will be available for tickets purchased through Wednesday, Aug. 31. Participants should bring their own picnic to enjoy at tables set up throughout the front half of the cemetery. “We supply tables, chairs and linens,” Hohenadel explained. “People can bring a canopy if they want to, or additional tables for their food. They can use their imagination to make the event as downhome or a chic as they want it to be.”

After the first session, where teams will create a general outline of the play, the participants will return on Saturday to spend the day fine-tuning the show. The Saturday performances will be open to the public, and Wood encourages anyone to come out to see the students’ efforts.“Ilook at the Play-in-a-Day sort of like preconditioning for football,” Wood said. “It’s a way to get everybody warmed up, back together, back into the pond and ready for our regular theater season.” The Columbia High School theater department will present its fall play, “Still Life With Iris,” on Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19. Wood noted that the production will also be performed at the state thespian conference in December. She emphasized, however, that no theater experience is necessary to participate in the Play-in-a-Day Fest. “You do not have to have any specific skills or theater background,” she said. “Just come ready to explore and Preregistrationplay.”is not required for the festival, and anyone who is interested in participating may just show up on Friday evening. Participation in the festival is free, as are the performances. For more information on the event, contact Wood at 717-468-3212 or search for “CHS Play-in-a-Day Fest 2022” on Facebook.

What can you accomplish in 24 hours? You can write, direct and star in a play. Columbia High School Thespian Troupe 289 will present its second annual Play-in-a-Day Fest on Friday, Aug. 19, and Saturday, Aug. 20, at the school, 901 Ironville Pike. Play-in-a-Day Fest is open to anyone age 12 and over. Creative sessions will be held on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., followed by play performances on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. “In the first creative session, we’ll do some warm-up games, get acquainted and choose our teams,” said Janet Wood, troupe director, who noted that all selections, from director to actors, will be chosen randomly.Thetheme of each play will also be selected randomly, as well as a prop each team must integrate into the performance. “Each team is also given two sentences. The plays all must start with the same sentence, and the other sentence can be used anywhere in the play,” Wood explained. The teams must also use all of their members on stage, perform their own technical support and incorporate one required costume piece. She noted that the finished plays have a sort of “mad libs” quality to them, where you never know what’s going to happen.

As part of its effort to provide patients with comprehensive health care services, the Allergy & Asthma Center, 2445 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will offer a free screening program to test for alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, sometimes called Alpha-1. Screenings will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals should call the office at 717-393-1365 to schedule an appointment.Alpha-1is a rare genetic (inherited) condition. It is passed from parents to their children through their genes. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age, and it is the No. 1 known genetic risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Alpha -1 testing is recommended by the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), the COPD Foundation, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease. Patients who might consider this screening include those with COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis; asthma that does not respond well to treatment; a family history of AAT deficiency; or a family member with one of the previously listed diseases. The cemetery is the final resting place for many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. It’s full of interesting statuary and striking grave markers, she said, adding that Fête participants are encouraged to walk around and explore the grounds. “It’s just a fun time to enjoy a picnic, socialize, dance to some great music and chat with your neighbors,” she said. Tomato sauce is a staple in Italian cooking and other cuisines. Many families have special recipes for their own tomato sauces. Homemade tomato sauce adds zest to meals served during leisurely Sunday afternoons featuring pasta andTomato-basedmeats. sauces have many names among Italians. “Sugo” is a word that broadly defines “sauce,” and can be applied to tomato-based varieties. “Ragú” implies that the sauce was reduced to obtain a more concentrated flavor profile after cooking it for hours. Marinara originated in Naples and means “sailor-style.” It is a classic sugo made from a few simple ingredients. An alternative to simmered sugo is salsa, which is made quickly with pureed tomatoes and does not contain meat or vegetables. It is ideal as a summer dressing for pasta and does not need to be cooked for long. It is relatively easy to make homemade tomato sauce. The freshness of homemade sauce cannot be replicated - especially if the sugo is made with tomatoes plucked from a backyard garden. For those new to homemade sauce, this recipe for Sugo di Pomodoro from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P Putnam’s Sons) is a fine place to start. Sugo di (TomatoPomodoroSauce) (Makes 5 1/2 cups) Ingredients 6 tablespoons olive oil 6 whole garlic cloves, peeled 1 cup finely chopped onion 1/4 teaspoon red pepper 1flakes28-ounce can peeled Italian tomatoes with basil, drained and chopped, juice reserved (see tip below) 12 fresh basil leaves, or 1 1/4 teaspoons dried 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt (see tip below) Directions 1 - In a 3-quart saucepan, heat the oil, garlic, onion, and red pepper flakes over mediumhigh heat. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring well. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, basil, oregano, and salt. Stir well and cook 5 minutes over medium heat. 2 - Add the reserved tomato juice and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3 - When the sauce has finished cooking, let it cool to room temperature, and then process to a smooth consistency in a food processor. The color may change slightly in the processor; this is normal and will not affect the flavor. The sauce can be frozen for up to a Chef’smonth.tips: The best canned tomatoes to use in this sauce are those packed in Italy. American products tend to be too tart. If using American tomatoes, add 1/2 teaspoon sugar when cooking them. This is a basic sauce used mainly to prepare other sauces. If it will be used over pasta, a bit more salt may need to be added, according to one’s taste. Veterans Meet For BreakfastBillTerryfounded

Various animals will serve as targets at the 3D Benefit Archery Shoot.

Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” said Terry. Not long after that conversation, Terry made the hourand-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in TerryLancaster.’”decided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend. The Vets Breakfast Club now meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird in Hand.
