Spend Time In Good “Company” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Native Gardens” Explores What It Means To Be A Neighbor BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is a fun play to watch,” said Maria Enriquez, director of “Native Gardens,” which will be performed as a staged reading at Susquehanna Stage. “It deals with themes and issues that are relevant to everyday life, but you don’t see represented on stage very often. It offers new
ways of looking at things.” “Native Gardens” will be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. It tells the story of two couples - one older and white, portrayed by Joanna Underhill and Joel Lesher, and one younger and Latino, portrayed by Jade Cintron and José Guillermo Rodríguez-Plaza
- and their interactions. “These two couples live next door to each other, and they come into a property dispute,” Enriquez explained. “It’s really about people coming to terms with their fears of the unknown and reconciling cultural differences.” Despite the heavy-sounding topic of the play, audiences can
expect to laugh, she noted. “It’s a comedic play. It’s very funny and very lighthearted, but it deals with serious themes,” Enriquez stated. “Things like, who can lay claim to land? What do you do when you come into a situation with someone you feel like you have no connection with? How do you overcome that?”

“Company” is a show about relationships, said Gregory DeCandia, artistic director of DreamWrights Center for Community Arts. Written by Stephen Sondheim, it is set in 1970s New York City. “Bobby is the lead character, and he’s turning 35,” DeCandia said. “All of his friends are married, and they are either giving him (a hard time) or giving him applause for being 35 and unmarried.” “Company” will be performed at DreamWrights at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20 and 21, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22. It features a cast of 14 and a 14-piece orchestra. “There are songs that are going to make you belly laugh, songs that are going to make you cry,” DeCandia noted. “Relationships

Company from pg 1 aren’t all jokes and happiness all the time, and they are not an all-depressing existence, either. The show is really a true depiction of relationships. Sondheim finds the humanity of the story and the characters. I like to call him ‘the Shakespeare of musical theater.’” Performances will be enhanced by a special event at the theater, DeCandia said, including happy hour before each performance, with ’70s music and local mixologists
serving signature cocktails based on the characters. “Not only will we have records playing and drinks being stirred, but we’ll have Cherie and Michael Brothers, two local artists who are a married couple, who will be showing their work,” DeCandia remarked, noting that Cherie specializes in stained glass and Michael is a watercolor artist. “It will be really interesting to have an art show from a couple before a performance of a show that’s about couples and relationships.”
Despite being written more than 50 years ago, “Company” is still relevant today, DeCandia noted. “The lyrics and what’s being said about relationships is timeless,” he explained. “ We wanted to lean into the nostalgia of the 1970s to remember a different time. We wanted to look back 50 years later to see, what were people saying about marriage then? What is the same now? What is different now? You’ll find not much has changed.”
He said the show will appeal to a everyone because of its universal themes. “It could also be a really fun date night to come with your parents or people from a different generation who maybe lived through the time period of the show, and then you can watch the show and swap notes about it afterwards,” he stated. Enriquez said she wanted to direct the play because the characters are well written. “The younger couple wants to fit in, and the older couple wants to make friends,” she said. “All four characters are very well meaning. They are not villains, and they’re not stereotypes. The play focuses on these well-intentioned, likeable characters who have flaws, who have misguided perceptions about each other.” Although the play is a popular choice for regional theaters, it hasn’t been produced in central Pennsylvania, Enriquez said, which made it even more appealing to her. “We have so many neighborhoods that are becoming more diverse,” she stated. “The play lets people think
about, ‘How can I treat people better? How can I be a better neighbor?’” Enriquez said the show is a perfect fit for Susquehanna Stage’s Undercurrent staged reading series because of its relevant themes. “The themes are complex, but delivered in a way that’s very accessible, very palatable for the audience,” she said. “These are all themes that are relevant to where we are now.” Enriquez is the company leader of Teatro Paloma, a Lancaster-based Latino theater company that performs throughout the county. The staged reading of “Native Gardens” is free, but donations will be accepted for Teatro Paloma. For more information, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

The Outdoor Learning Network Initiative (OLNI) completed its first grant cycle in July. OLNI, founded in the fall of 2019, is a collaborative partnership between the school districts of Conestoga Valley, Ephrata Area, and Columbia Borough in addition to the Lancaster County Conservation District, Stroud Water Research Center, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Millersville University. Educators from each entity participated in environmental literacy events that can be implemented in classrooms at every level. This summer, the group met for two weeks - one week in June and one week in July. Teachers from each of the three school districts participated in a wide range of environmental literacy learning events and projects that are scalable from the elementary classrooms to high school classes. From determining the health of a stream via chemical water testing to an accounting of macroinvertebrates - bugs in the water - to computer tools that delineate watersheds and even augmented reality stream tables, educators had a wide range of educational options from which to choose during the sessions. Teachers were also given time to work collaboratively to develop systemic environmental literacy learning to enhance what is already accomplished in the schools. The grant was funded by the Pisces Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Trust, Chesapeake Bay Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Chesapeake Bay Funders Network.

Three Centuries Of Service BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On the wall of Donegal Presbyterian Church, a sign bears a Celtic saying. It translates to “one hundred thousand welcomes,” and it perfectly sums up the church’s philosophy, said Portia Brian, who volunteers as the church’s historian. “ We believe in connecting people through faith,” she said. “Churches come and go, but this one has withstood the test of time.” She’s not kidding. Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, will mark its 300th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 26, with a homecoming service beginning at 10 a.m. Bag-

Stephen Richmond of the Rathneeny, Ireland, church with whom Donegal shares an ancestral heritage. Representatives from the synod and presbytery will participate in the service, and the Rev. Matthew D. Randolph will deliver the sermon. The Rev. Larry Chottiner has written a hymn especially for the 300-year celebration. The Donegal Church choir will provide special music. church’s antique pewter Communion set. Tea and scones will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A luncheon will be held at Cameron Estate Inn beginning at 1 p.m. Brian said the congregation uses 1721 as the date of the church’s formation, because there is documented proof of that date. “We use that date, but we know that there were people worshipping here before that time,” she noted. The church grounds were once home to a “witness tree,” where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. In 1991, the tree had to be cut down due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more. Acorns from the original tree were also saved to plant a new tree. Brian said the 300th anniversary celebration offers
a time for the community to come together and recognize the longevity of the church. “ We are welcoming anybody back who has a connection to Donegal Presbyterian Church,” she said, noting that the church has withstood the challenges of life on what was once frontier land through wars and even the most recent pandemic. “It’s amazing that a congregation has survived for 300 years, and it has evolved over those years. The church had to be a vital part of the community to survive that long, and we are still committed to serving our community today.” Reservations are requested for the church service and may be made by calling the church office between Monday, Sept. 6, and Monday, Sept. 20, at 717-653-1943. Reservations for the luncheon are required by Sunday, Sept. 12. To sign up, email CarlaDouple98@gmail.com or purchase tickets on Sundays after church services.

for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States.

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23 through New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road,

East Earl. A short ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, announcements, and a safety briefing will be held at ECC. At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human trafficking organization active in Reading, will speak briefly. McHenry said she plans to share statistics about human trafficking. “We do education on how to take action against human trafficking and how to identify and respond to victims,” explained McHenry. “We do prevention work with children in an effort to keep them safe.” FREE opened The Resting Place, a women’s drop-in
center meeting basic needs and providing safe housing for those who request it, in Reading in 2019. The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area. With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Aware-
ness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Birdin-Hand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.
