SNHA Launches Pilot Season Of Free Riverboat Tours By Chelsea Peifer
Cruising along the Susquehanna River in a pontoon boat while hearing about the history of the area was an activity the team at Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) wanted to offer to locals and visitors - to make sure more people had a chance to enjoy all that the river has to offer. On July 13, SNHA launched its pilot season of River Discovery Boat Tours with resounding success. Paul Nevin, manager of Zimmerman Center for Heritage, which is operated by SNHA, said that the tours were so popular that within hours of the first round of free tickets being made available online, every spot filled up for the free pontoon boat tours offered at three times on Saturdays
and Sundays in July and August. “The response has been overwhelming,” said Nevin, who is one of the three guides who alternate taking the lead for the boat tours. The tours begin and end at the dock across the street from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Nevin said that due to the enormous popularity of the boat tours, SNHA decided to expand its pilot season to include Fridays and to extend through Sunday, Oct. 13, rather than ending in August. Reservations may be made at w w w. s u s q u e h a n n a h e r i t a g e . o r g / programs/boat-tours. The free tours are available at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Oct. 13. Tickets will be released incrementally, with another block of dates opening up in mid-September. Tours will be offered again in 2020. See Riverboat Tours pg 3

The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club held its annual roundup on Aug. 5 at Mount Joy Mennonite Church. The event included a dinner and showcase of projects. While the projects were being scored by club leaders, the 4-Hers participated in STEM activities and art projects. By Chelsea Peifer
In other parts of the state, many 4-H clubs have folded or are dealing with dwindling attendance and involvement, but the Mount Joy 4-H Community
Club is bucking the trend. With the club having 130 members on the roster last fall, Community Club organizational leader Katina Musser said, “We were actually told that this is the largest club in the state.” See 4-H pg 5
In July 2018, approximately 188 teenagers and adults provided home repairs to area residents in need through the inaugural Eastern York Workcamp Initiative facilitated by GROUP Mission Trips. A second workcamp is set to take place in June 2020. Applications from local residents for assistance with home repair projects will be accepted through Jan. 31, 2020.

Mission Trips facilitates the workcamps so that volunteers can provide home repairs to individuals and families in need. The first Eastern York Workcamp Initiative took place in July 2018, with approximately 188 teenagers and adults from Wisconsin, Ohio, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania working together in small groups at 24 homes in York and Lancaster counties. Among those volunteers were approximately 25 teenagers from the York Youth Revolution (YYR) youth group that meets at Faith United Methodist Church in Hallam. YYR had participated in several workcamps in other parts of the country before applying to host a camp in Wrightsville in 2018. Several area churches and community groups formed the Eastern York Workcamp Initiative Community Team to sponsor the effort, raising funds to cover the costs of materials and coordinating area volunteers for various tasks such as providing snacks for the work crews. YYR leader Joe Bachman said that the first workcamp was such a success that the group wanted to host another. Bachman noted that approximately 440 campers are currently signed up to serve at the 2020 Eastern York Workcamp Initiative. According to Bachman, that means the workcamp will tentatively be able to provide free
home repairs and improvements at 64 residences in the local area. One adult volunteer serves alongside five students to provide guidance and instruction as the projects are completed. Interior and exterior painting, weatherization, porch repairs, and wheelchair ramp construction are a few examples of the improvements offered. Residents interested in applying to receive assistance through the Eastern York Workcamp Initiative may contact Nadine Barret at 717-757-3998 or christchurch 5main@ymail.com. The deadline to apply is Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Workcamp volunteers pay registration fees that are used to cover costs for food, insurance, and some building materials - all while volunteering their time and labor. The participants will be housed at Eastern York Middle School: sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the cafeteria, and enjoying evening programs in the gym. Bachman has been a part of 13 workcamps thus far and described all of them as very positive experiences. “It’s honestly so much more than the work,” shared Bachman. “To see youth from all over the country come to our area and show love and kindness to our residents is beyond words.” To learn more, readers may visit www.groupmissiontrips.com.

the Maryland state line. “The Native Americans saw this as a special place. They created rock art here not to make it sacred but rather because they saw it as sacred already,” remarked Nevin. “Something is special about this part of the river.” More recent history includes the construction of the railways along the river, thriving shad fisheries, and communities that grew as the Holtwood and Safe Harbor Dams were built. According to SNHA president Mark Platts, the River Discovery Boat Tours are the first new initiative of SNHA since its Congressional designation of Lancaster and York counties as the United States’ 55th National Heritage Area in March 2019. Grants from the Pennsylvania Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources/Heritage Areas Program and the National Park Service/Chesapeake Bay Gateways Program enabled the rides to be offered free of charge to participants in the 2019 pilot season. The tours were developed as part of the Zimmerman Center’s official role as a National Park Service Visitor Contact & Passport Station for the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. More information is available at www.susquehannaheritage.org.
Susquehanna National Heritage Area launched its pilot season of free River Discovery Boat Tours in July. The tours, which last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, depart and return to the dock by the Zimmerman Center for Heritage in Wrightsville.

Tours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, as participants aboard the 10-passenger pontoon boat ride south on the Lake Clarke portion of the river to the Safe Harbor Dam before circling up to Columbia and continuing back to Wrightsville. Nevin said that the tours fit well with the mission of SNHA to connect people with the Susquehanna River. Southern portions of the approximately 17-mile tour give participants a glimpse of portions of the river that cannot be seen from the roadways. “When you’re driving across the river, you don’t get the sense of scale that you do being out on a boat,” noted Nevin. Tourgoers saw plenty of wildlife on the summer tours, including numerous sightings of the often-elusive bald eagles. Visitors will get a glimpse of life along the Susquehanna River as it as today and hear about what it was like in years gone by. Stories about the rich history of the Lake Clarke portion of the river date back to when the area was the heartland of the Native American Susquehannock people. Nevin, who also serves on the board of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, shares about the ancient Susquehanna River rock art that is primarily located in and along the river from Washington Boro to

More than 3,400 units of blood have been collected at past Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire blood drives. The next weekend, Aug. 17 and 18, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire welcomed beneficiaries of nonprofit organizations to the festivities with free admission. Approved beneficiaries included 501(c)(3) religious, educational, or charitable organizations. The organization applied through the Renaissance Faire’s website for the
complimentary admission and were reviewed and approved based on financial need. The Renaissance Faire has distributed more than 6,500 tickets for the 2019 Community Outreach Program. On the same weekend, beneficiaries of local libraries also enjoyed free admission through the Renaissance Faire’s annual Library Program. Young readers earned a free ticket by completing the task set by their local library. The Renaissance Faire provided 3,000 tickets to the libraries. On Saturday, Aug. 31; Sunday, Sept. 1; and Monday, Sept. 2, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will offer a discounted admission price to active and retired members of the military and those who serve as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel, as well as members of veteran organizations, and their immediate family members, with a valid service identification. The Renaissance Faire will also honor six heroes in each day’s Finale In Song’s Royal Honor Ceremony. The honorees were selected through an earlier nomination process. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and Labor Day Monday through Sunday, Oct. 27. Separate admission fees have been set for adults and for children ages 5 to 11. Parking is free. Games, rides, foods, beverages, and merchant wares have additional costs. Another in-demand project his year was Science Fun, which focused on STEM activities and experiments. “We made volcanoes and ice cream and pop rocks,” said Aubrey Fry, 10, of Mount Joy. Mount Joy resident Amanda Ellenberger, 19, completed her final year in 4-H and hopes to return as a leader. “4-H holds a special place in my heart because it teaches skills you don’t normally learn,” said Amanda. This year, she took part in canoeing, strawberries, advanced sewing, calligraphy, and cake decorating. Aside from the unique skill sets she developed in projects such as those for her past 11 years as a 4Her, Amanda said the club has helped her to develop confidence and leadership skills. Tate Garman, 10, of Manheim, said that rocketry was his favorite project. “We build the rockets out of empty soda bottles and then they shoot off with water pressure.” “I liked entomology. We learned how to identify different kinds of insects,” said Boyanna Dohner, 13, of Mount Joy. Musser noted that the Mount

On Aug. 5, the gymnasium at Mount Joy Mennonite Church was packed with evidence of that as 4-H members, volunteers, and their families gathered for the annual roundup. The event featured a dinner and a showcase of projects that 4-H members had completed in their programs of study this year. While the projects were being scored by club leaders, the students participated in STEM activities and art projects. The evening ended with a recognition program. 4-H is a national program designed to help youths ages 5 to 18 develop knowledge and skills to become capable, caring, and contributing citizens. Children and teenagers may sign up to participate in projects such as sewing, photography, rocketry, beekeeping, candy making, backpacking, and more. Tie-dye, one of the new projects offered through the Mount Joy club this year, turned out to be very popular. According to Musser, the first 10 spots filled up so quickly that the club leader opened another group for 10 more students and still had a waiting list after that. Each participant got

The goal of the new Bridges Community Partnership is to span the gap between Penn Manor School District residents and the resources available to serve them. The group, which is composed of numerous current and past social workers, educators, and volunteers, began in 2014 as a think tank. It morphed into a task force and finally settled into Bridges Community Partnership. “We were looking to involve the community and educate them on the economic diversity in the district,” said founder Joy Meley, Penn Manor’s social worker for students in kindergarten through grade six and their families. Meley formed a team that included Jen Frank, Millersville University professor of social work; Deb Meckley, retired social worker and current volunteer with The Loft; Jill Montgomery, interpreter for Spanish-speaking families in Penn Manor and other districts; Sue Ellenberg, vice president of council and education committee member at St. Paul Lutheran Church; Shandra Stoner, former social worker and The Loft representative; and Christine Glover, community prevention mobilizer at Compass Mark. Keila Torres, Penn Manor’s new social worker for grades seven to 12, has recently joined the group. The group researched the needs of vulnerable people in the district through a community assessment. When interviewed for the assess-
ment, clients of The Loft, a food and clothing pantry hosted by Millersville Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, expressed a need for connections. “People came to The Loft every week, not because they need more pants, but because they were lonely,” Frank related. Quite a few obstacles can hinder the well-being of district residents.
