Trust Plans Columbia Architectural Tour By Chelsea Peifer

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Historic Preservation Trust (HPT) of Lancaster County will host the Columbia Architectural Tour, showcasing the beauty of buildings dating from the 1700s to the 1930s. “Each of the 25 sites is significant, and that’s why we picked it to be part of the tour,” explained Matt Barley, HPT board member and tour committee chair. The HPT was established in the 1960s in response to the urban renewal happening in Lancaster, and Barley said that since then a walking tour of a borough or town in Lancaster County has been offered to the public approximately every two years. The mission of HPT, then and now, is to encourage and facilitate historic preservation throughout the county. “At the Trust, we educate, we

collaborate, and we celebrate, and the tour hits all three of those,” explained Barley. “You’ve got to continually be educating because it’s so easily forgotten.” “The tour is about Lancaster County as a whole,” said Barley, noting that past tours have highlighted preservation in areas such as Marietta, Ephrata, Strasburg, and Bowmansville. “Having Columbia for this year’s tour seems to parallel the exciting things that are happening there.” Columbia is known to some as the jewel of the Susquehanna and still others as the Brooklyn of Lancaster, but organizers have promoted the Columbia Architectural Tour as a chance for people to see why some are calling Columbia “the Paris of Pennsylvania.” Barley, who resides in Columbia, admits that the phrase began somewhat in jest, See Architectural Tour pg 7

able to view the Hanemans’ handiwork on Sunday, Sept. 8, when their garden will be one of seven featured on the annual Marietta Garden Tour. The self-guided tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, offering tourgoers inspiration for the end of summer and autumn season. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. An original wrought-iron fence, a small pond, an outhouse-turned-garden-shed, hydrangeas, mountain laurel, wood poppies, and rhododendron are a few of the treasures that visitors will be able to spot at the Hanemans’. One stretch of the backyard included an above-ground pool from the previous homeowners, but David got rid of the pool and had aspirations of putting in a rose garden. However, since the lighting conditions were not conducive to that idea, he instead put in a fountain surrounded by hostas, azaleas, woodruff, and other plants tucked in and around a circular stone walkway. During the tour, David will also have a few of his pen and ink illustrations - he specializes in historic buildings, animals, and plants - on display throughout the garden. The Marietta Garden Tour will also feature gardens at the homes of Glen and Judith KennedyMazis, Bonnie Reitz, Carrie Muller and Bill Dalzell, Luann and Wayne Pearson, Ronna and Ken Gall, and Liz and Wayne Grogan. Admission to seminars at the Community House is also included for ticketholders. John Enterline will share “Answers to Gardening Dilemmas” at noon and 2 p.m., and Ronn Short will present “Going to Pot in the Fall” at 1 and 3 p.m. A plant swap will also take place. Enterline is a

graduate of the Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Program and has designed gardens from California to Pennsylvania. Enterline and Short’s property was featured on last year’s tour. A plant swap will take place at the Community House during the tour. People are welcome to bring plants to trade, or they may pay nominal fees for plants if they have none to exchange. Homemade pork barbecue meals will be available for the public to purchase during tour hours at the Community House. Meals will include a pork barbecue sandwich, baked beans, potato chips,

coleslaw, a dessert, and a beverage. Prices will be reduced for tourgoers. Marietta Garden Tour tickets are available for a discount in advance at Floral Designs of Mount Joy, 1599 W. The Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Locust Street Park in Columbia. The purpose of the annual service is to recognize the community’s first responders and military veterans and to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The speaker for this year’s service will be the Rev. Dr. James L. Banach, a Civil War reenactor chaplain. His message, given in his authentic uniform and presented as if he is speaking to an 1863 audience in Gettysburg, will highlight how today’s first responders echo the Army and civilian volunteer responders during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. This year, members of First St. John’s Lutheran Church of York will participate with Columbia’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as the partner congregation. A pianist and accompanying trumpeter from First St. John’s will perform Christian and patriotic songs, and a

Youth Program Seeks Volunteers York County Juvenile Probation Services is seeking volunteers for its Youth Aid Panel, a diversionary program that holds youths accountable while avoiding the stigma of permanent criminal records. Under the program, select children facing summary and misdemeanor charges avoid entering the formal criminal justice system by being diverted to court-sanctioned panels made up of community members. There are Youth Aid Panels in every school district in York County. No special training or background is required. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or

Sayali faithfully trained for the 5K by taking daily walks with her boxer, Athena, and set a fundraising goal of $1,000 - only to surpass that goal by raising more than $5,000. The race itself proved to be a challenge, as her prostheses are not designed for far distances or bumpy terrain, but she crossed the finish line. Now a college sophomore majoring in video production, Sayali plans to once again participate in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and raise funds to help children in need. This year’s Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The family-friendly event will include a 5K, a fun walk, pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course for children, games and activities, giveaways, and food. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, encourages people to join Sayali at the event or to consider supporting her cause if they are unable to participate or attend. The organization has set a fundraising goal of $75,000 for this year’s event, the 15th annual. Through adoption grants, Brittany’s Hope has united more than 1,300 children with special needs into forever families by adoption. Sahd said that the organization also actively

MoneyMakers Club Promotes Investment Education By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Dividends, NYSE, NASDAQ, growth stock, day trading - for some folks, these words are as incomprehensible as thermonuclear astrophysics. The members of the MoneyMakers Investment Club, however, are committed to working together to demystify the stock market and the process of investing in stocks. “The purpose of the club is mostly education, to get comfortable with basics and concepts of investing and have a little fun while we’re doing it,” explained senior partner Chris Milsom. “We were spurred on by the Beardstown Ladies club,” she added, referencing “The Beardstown

Ladies’ Common-Sense Investment Guide: How We Beat the Stock Market - And How You Can Too,” which was published in 1995. “Widows, finding themselves in charge of their financial future, formed an investment club, and they did so well that they spawned this whole movement of women’s investment clubs,” Milsom continued. Membership in the MoneyMakers Investment Club is not restricted to women only. While an audit eventually showed that the Beardstown Ladies’ investments were not performing as well as initially advertised, the principle remained the same: Laypeople could teach themselves how to invest and manage stocks wisely.

In 1997, Milsom was part of the creation of Bring Your Own Chair (BYOC), an investment group that met in different places, so attendees were encouraged to provide their own seats. BYOC merged with the MoneyMakers group in 2003 and opted to keep that name. The MoneyMakers group meets on the second Wednesday of almost every month at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Friends Meetinghouse, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. The club usually does not meet in July, and the December meeting is a social event held at a local restaurant. During each meeting, club members discuss the group’s current portfolio and consider other stocks. Each member follows at least one stock for a year, reporting on its progress periodically. “The goal is to get each person to have a comfortable level with their own investing,” Milsom said. “We want them to be able to make better decisions about their financial future.” “Most of our stocks have done well,” said club member Sandy Bruce. “Occasionally you get a bad egg.”

MoneyMakers Investment Club senior partner Chris Milsom (left) and member Sandy Bruce invite anyone interested in learning about investing in stocks to consider joining the club. “We try to keep an ear on the ground,” Milsom added. The MoneyMakers have done so well lately that the club anticipates receiving an award from the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of BetterInvesting. The chapter serves individual and investment club members of BetterInvesting by providing educational investing workshops, model investment club meetings, and other events for stock investors of all skill levels. BetterInvesting is a nonprofit organization that was founded as the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC) in 1951. The mission of BetterInvesting is to provide sound investment information, education, and support that helps to create successful lifetime investors. The MoneyMakers group relies on resources produced by BetterInvesting to train its members. The Stock Selection Guide is invaluable, Milsom and Bruce agreed. The organization also offers conferences and webinars, and www.betterinvesting.org hosts a wealth of resources used by the MoneyMakers to manage the group’s portfolio. There is a fee to join the MoneyMakers, and members contribute an amount of money at each meeting to purchase stocks. Dividends are reinvested, or they are used to pay for the cost of accessing BetterInvesting’s online resources. “Because I’m in this club, I was brave enough to go out and buy my own stocks,” Bruce commented. “Even if you use a stockbroker, it’s good to have some knowledge of what’s going on.” The next meeting of the MoneyMakers will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Interested individuals are welcome to attend. Milsom requested that readers send an email to moneymakers.investmentclub@gmail.com to let the club know they plan to attend.

The new season of the Lancaster Chorale will begin on Sunday, Sept. 8, with the first rehearsal at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Registration will open at 2 p.m. The group will continue to meet on Sundays thereafter, and every rehearsal is expected to run from 3 to 5 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join the chorale, and auditions are not required. The group was founded in 2000 and typically has had about 100 singers, said Bruce Gerlach, the chorale’s new director. Gerlach succeeds Jonathan Rajaseelan. “As the new conductor of the chorale, I hope to maintain and hopefully expand on the success it has had with its past conductors through the years,” Gerlach remarked. “My goal is to lead a group of highly proficient and trained singers and to have the most fun that they have ever had in singing.” Gerlach noted that with the shift in church music away from choirs and toward contemporary worship bands, talented singers no longer have as many outlets to perform collaboratively. The Lancaster Chorale provides an opportunity for people who may have sung in high school, college, or church choirs to participate in an artistic, choral singing group once again. “Excellent diction and a healthy

approach to singing and good tone will be taught and expected. Great sacred classical literature will be the staple, but we will also sing some modern and secular works,” Gerlach said. The Lancaster Chorale usually gives two performances a year, once each in the fall and the spring. The fall 2019 concert is themed “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and will be presented at Calvary Church at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. The chorale will sing numerous classically oriented pieces with the emphasis on praising God. The featured work will be John Rutter’s “Gloria,” whose three movements will be accompanied by brass, percussion, and organ. In spring 2020, the chorale is slated to perform the oratorio “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn, accompanied by full orchestra. “I hope that all former members of the chorale come back to the group after being off during the entire spring of 2019,” Gerlach said. “And I hope we can attract a large number of new members. Were you in County or District Chorus in high school? Wasn’t it a grand experience? Join the Lancaster Chorale for another grand experience.” Gerlach comes to the chorale with decades of experience in music education and conducting. He grew up in Washington Boro and graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1974. Gerlach met his wife, Margie, at college in

her lifetime. The guided exterior walking tours will be led by architectural designers and are set to begin at 10 a.m. and depart every halfhour through 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Participants must check in for the tour at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, to receive wristbands and a tour booklet. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. Although 25 properties are included in the tour, not all of those will be part of the guided portion of the tour. Tourgoers will each receive a 75-page booklet including historical background and anecdotes for each of the sites, and they may explore the other properties on their own during tour hours. A trolley will be running on a loop throughout town as another mode of transportation for participants to reach all of the sites. To purchase tickets for the Columbia Architectural Tour in advance, people may visit https://hptrust.org. Tickets may also be available on the day of the tour while supplies last. Admission to the Turkey Hill Experience, Wright’s Ferry Mansion, and the National Watch and Clock Museum is included with each tour ticket. Separate ticket prices have been set for HPT members and for nonmembers, as well as for children. The tour is family-friendly, and a treasure hunt for children will be offered. Individuals with questions may email manager@hptrust.org or call 717-291-5861. A complete list of properties on the tour is available at https://hptrust.org.

Forging Life will present “The Secrets of Inner Peak Performance,” a two-day event, at the Wyndham Garden York, 2000 Loucks Road, York, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15. Conducted by success coach Trey Ryder, “The Secrets of Inner Peak Performance” is an event designed for people looking to better their life and free themselves from the barriers holding them back. Ryder grew up in a family affected by drug and alcohol abuse. He enlisted in the military after high school. Throughout his military career and while serving as a military police investigator, Ryder helped many soldiers overcome relationship issues, addictions, and suicide attempts. He mentored hundreds of soldiers, helping them to reach their personal and professional goals.

Those experiences led Ryder to create “The Secrets of Inner Peak Performance.” During the two days, “The Secrets of Inner Peak Performance” will provide information that can help people overcome difficult situations in life and business. Participants will identify their setbacks and develop a detailed plan of action for overcoming them. Every person attending will have time to get dedicated help on their situations. For more information and to reserve seats, readers may visit https://forginglife.org and click on the link to more information about “The Secrets of Inner Peak Performance.” There is a fee to attend the event. If two tickets are purchased, the proceeds of the second ticket will be donated to a charity that helps veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress. Only 40 seats are available.
