Pennsylvania’s Community College, hold enrollment opportunity sessions. The open house will give a small example of what is in store in the coming months, including upcoming classes as Community REACH expands into surrounding areas by providing education and resources for all. The educational opportunities are all free thanks to a grant from the Department of Education and will be offered at Community REACH’s Red Lion location.

Additional class information can be found under the Education tab at www.commreach.org. Community REACH was established in 1974 to provide basic items and programs of support including a choice food pantry, school supplies, cold weather gear, a children’s backpack program, and holiday giving. The role of staff members and volunteers is to resource, educate, advocate, connect, and assist their clients and the community.

People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase inhome dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a

supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths

at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. To learn more, readers may visit www.giftsthatgivehope .org/lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced.

working on a replica of Hans Herr House for the garden. There is a mill at the east end of the layout, and a water tank is available to service the steam engine. Throughout the garden, most of the vegetation is natural to the area, with moss mixed in with the plants. A few of the plants surrounding the pond are artificial. “We have a fountain and a couple of fishermen there,” said Landis. “There’s a gazebo.” The garden opens in May and closes in October. During the regular season, the garden is generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is also open for special occasions, such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Grandparents’ Day. It will also be open for Landis Homes Fellowship Day on Saturday, Sept. 14. Club member John Buckwalter has done the math to calculate how far the trains travel during a typical season. “They run approximately from Landis Homes to Des Moines, Iowa, or Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Tampa, Fla.,” said Buckwalter. “(That’s) 1,023 miles per season.” Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers of Kissel Hill

area that now holds the tracks and trains was a lot smaller when the club first laid it out in 2005. “(We started) with a couple of tracks and a minimal amount of money,” recalled Landis, who added that the club has expanded the layout significantly. “I have been here four years, and we have added many buildings and four trains in that time.” G-gauge trains, which can be used indoors as well, travel on approximately 300 feet of track. One of the diesels pulls a passenger car, and another pulls freight cars. The third pulls coal cars and a whimsical Lifesavers car. The trolley makes regular stops, but sometimes a club member replaces the trolley with a brightly colored ladybug that zips around the tracks. The trains whistle, and the bells ring. Buildings that were not constructed by club members are German made, and some are ceramic. The layout includes a miniature replica of the Lancaster train station, along with a tiny Harrisburg station. Kim Klinepeter of Mechanicsburg, daughter of club member Bruce Allison, is

PSECU Supports Hunger Action Month breakfasts in the food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Members of the community are invited to register to attend the free events at www.central pafoodbank.org/ham. To help bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, the CPFB has asked community leaders to be “celebrity volunteers” and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September. These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others. During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual

food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.cen tralpafoodbank.org/psecu. In addition to virtual food drive donation matching in September, PSECU will provide the CPFB with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing its combined contribution to a potential $20,000. According to CPFB, each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation

could provide up to 120,000 meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. To learn more about hunger and Hunger Action Month events, activities, and ways to get involved, readers may visit www.centralpafoodbank.org/ham. Tide Volleyball Battles Mt. Calvary, LMH by Sam Valentin

After winning just one match last year, the girls’ volleyball team looks to improve, be a close group and to compete in every match. Well they have done all of those things so far. The team lost Megan Braas, Desiree Torress, and Onyx Rodriguez but added sophomore Morgan Bigler and freshman Mercy Gonzalez while returning senior setter Melina Mowrer, senior Amanda Torres, and junior Liz Cruz.

Columbia’s Brynn Spiese makes a nice play to keep a Mennonite spike alive during last Tuesday’s Section 3 match in Columbia.

school football. Columbia opened their season against Eastern York on August 23rd picking up their first win of the season via a 35-28 victory. Ryan Redding and Matt McCleary led the way for the Tide as they did last year for the baseball team. McCleary threw for 213 yards on 17 completions for four touchdowns. He also contributed 62 yards on the ground. Two of those touchdown throws went to Redding who finished with seven catches for 110 yards and two scores. Those guys may have a telepathic connection at this point. Demetrius Diaz-Ellis caught four passes for 67 yards and a touchdown on the night as well. Darnell Tucker punched in a six yard run for a touchdown also. In the third quarter Jvon Collazo took an interception 15 yards to house which may have been the difference maker for the Tide. They racked up nearly 300 yards of offense against Eastern York and created a few turnovers but did allow them to gain 380 yards. Columbia is returning every starter this year under coach Bud Kyle in his third year at the helm. In his first year, the team went winless but last season Kyle steered the Tide to a 3-7 record while missing out on the playoffs by one spot. Two of those losses were by single digits. Now with a core of veteran players under Kyle’s command they hope to build on last year’s success and end a seven year playoff drought. The Tide opened their section play against Lancaster Catholic on August 30. They had Catholic on the ropes a few times but just could not seem to capitalize and lost 35-19 with the visitors pulling away late. McCleary opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when he found DiazEllis for 20 yard score. Diaz-Ellis did not take long to find the end zone again as he rushed one in, this time to give the Tide a 13-7 lead half way through the second quarter. Unfortunately, the Crusaders took control after Photo by Vaughn Brown Melina Mowrer goes up to challenge a that. Columbia scored just once more on a Blazer shot during the Tide’s Section crucial fourth down throw from McCleary as Three match with visiting Lancaster he found Phillip Acosta for a one yard touchdown. It was a special teams’ miscue on a Mennonite last Tuesday. The Tide went 1-18 overall last year including going 0-12 in the league. So there is plenty of room for improvement and they look to take advantage of it. Although they lost in three straight sets to Mount Calvary Christian in their first match, the girls did put up a solid fight scoring 16 and 19 points respectively, in the first two sets. Gonzalez led the way with two kills and 14 digs while Mowrer recorded 2 service aces. Bigler added three assists as well. The ladies opened up league play with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-11 home loss to Lancaster Mennonite last Tuesday. Gonzalez paced the Tide with three service aces and seven digs. FOOTBALL The days are starting to shorten and the temperatures have cooled down nicely to bring in the end of summer which also brings with it some high

punt and a red zone turnover that shifted the momentum away from the Tide. The Columbia defense was drowning the quarterback all night, recording six sacks with many hurries. They ended the game with 208 total yards while only giving up 203 yards on the day. McCleary completed 19 passes for 211 yards and two scores. Redding had another big day catching nine passes for 100 yards. Combined, they have gained almost 500 yards in two games while McCleary has over 400 passing yards already in the young season. Redding has hauled in 16 catches for 210 yards and two scores while Diaz-Ellis has seven catches for 124 yards and two scores. Darnell Tucker adds nine catches for 61 yards. McCleary also leads the team in rushing with 44 yards on the ground. The Tide hung with Catholic the whole game and even had more offensive yards, something to build on for the future. TENNIS The girls’ tennis team has gotten off to a bit of a rocky start dropping their first three matches. They lost to Lebanon earlier this month 6-1 with Brooke Haldmen and Cleo Grove picking up the lone win 8-6 in their doubles match. They followed that up with a loss to Red Lion and then again to Solanco. The girls were handed another shutout defeat last week by Northern Lebanon. Melanic Cruz-Bernard, Skyler Garner, Grove, Haldeman, and Rose Misciagna are winless in their singles competition but it is still early in the year and these are merely warm up matches for league play which gets underway against Lancaster Catholic. CROSS COUNTRY Last but not least cross country kicked off for both the boys and girls against Manheim Central and Lancaster Mennonite. Despite a fifth place finish in 19:44 by Anthony Palmisaro and a fifth place effort by Emily Gambler (24:35) both teams lost. Cassidy Cook added a 10th place effort in 26:46 and Mallory Conroy was 13th in 29:22.

and their families achieved the goal of reading 1,000 books in the program’s first nine months from Oct. 1, 2018, to July 1, 2019. All totaled, this group read 72,443 books during this period. At 1,000 books each, the total would have been 68,000 books. The group kept reading, collectively logging an additional 4,443 books. This group was the first to receive 1000 Books Before Kindergarten diplomas from YCL. YCL officials set an initial goal of having 1,000 children register for the program in the first year. According to Lambert, by the beginning of July, 1,942 children were enrolled, and they had read 252,760 books. By July 30, participation had

All YCL locations participate in the program, and registration is open year-round. Children who reach the 1,000-book goal between July 2, 2019, and July 1, 2020, will be part of YCL’s second graduation in August 2020.
