The Magic Of Model Railroading By Chelsea Peifer
Frank Stellar’s railway garden was a dream deferred for many years as other ventures - like a successful teaching and coaching career at Donegal High School and raising a family - took priority. Upon retiring, he set out to design and install an expansive backyard layout at his Manheim home. Manheim resident Frank Stellar’s garden Instead of starting small and railway will be among the 10 featured gradually adding on, he opted to tour sites throughout Lancaster, York, and go big from the start. “At my age, Chester counties on the Railroad Museum I knew what I wanted to do and of Pennsylvania’s 12th annual Garden knew that it’d be a one-and-done Railways Tour on Oct. 7. pawpaw orchard at the Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York. Richard Bono, who manages the 48 pawpaw trees that were planted six years ago, reported that more than 100 pawpaw fruits are on the trees this year. According to Richard, the orchard has been well mulched and mowed all year. Between that and the fact that the trees are now bearing the highly anticipated fruit, Richard said, “It has never looked better.” Richard and his wife, Judy Bono, help to organize the annual Pawpaw Festival at the Horn Farm Center. They are expecting record crowds this year, as pawpaw lovers have traveled great distances in recent years to attend the event. The 2018 Pawpaw Festival is slated to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23, on the Horn Farm Center grounds. There is a nominal tasting fee at the door, with children under age 2 being admitted free of charge. Ample parking is available. Tours of the orchard will be offered, and Richard will speak at noon on both days about his experience with growing pawpaws. At 1 p.m. each day, Lydia See Pawpaw Festival pg 5

Garden Railways Tour from pg 1 plant, a coal mine, a church, houses, barns, and more - Stellar worked from kits or modified birdhouses that fit his vision. Antique vehicles dot the roadways, and last summer Stellar added a small pond and babbling waterfall. Battery-powered trains travel along tracks that swirl throughout the yard at several levels of elevation, disappearing from time to time under tunnels or the deck before reappearing to cross bridges and trestles all hand-built by Stellar. “It’s all one continuous loop, and I can run three trains at a time,” Stellar noted. The tracks also lead through a small doorway into the garage, where they
can loop around Stellar’s workshop before returning outdoors. Just how many hours go into maintenance and upkeep for the layout and garden is tough to say, but the entire project is a labor of love for Stellar. Railroading is in his blood and has been a part of his life since he was a child. “As a kid, my parents would take me to the Reading Railroad in the stroller, and it was something that just stayed with me,” he recalled. Stellar’s grandfather worked as a tower operator at the Reading Railroad, where several of his uncles established careers as well. When Stellar reached the ripe old age of 2, his father presented him with a
Lionel train set that was his first foray into what has become a lifelong model railroading hobby. “It was something that was instilled in me, and I just had this ambition,” said Stellar. Stellar’s garden railway will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 12th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 7. The self-guided, family-friendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge. Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers

December, and a lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. Pictures with Santa Claus will be available for a fee from 3 to 6 p.m. that day. There is no cost to attend the open house, but attendees are asked to bring dry food for dogs and cats. “It’s our opportunity to fill our shelves with the food we need to prepare for the holiday season,” Sanders said. “We do a double distribution in November and none in December so that everyone has what they need for the holidays.” The Pet Pantry regularly distributes 5,000 pounds of pet food each month. Distributions take place in Gap and Coatesville, as well as at Water Street Mission and the Pet
Pantry. The organization supplies food to rescue groups on an emergency basis. The Pet Pantry also supports more than 140 cats that are available for adoption. Visitors to the annual open house hosted by the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be able to tour the organization’s new mobile unit. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s honed,” said Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. “We will start scheduling more appointments (after the) fall, and we’re hoping to find someone to pull it. (Once it’s fully operational), I think it will be a valuable resource for the community.” The mobile unit was designed to serve three purposes. First, the traveling veterinary facility can host feral clinics on farms or in communities where feral cats live in abundance. Spay/neuter and vaccination services will be available during those clinics. “We’re trying to get a trapneuter-release initiative going,” Sanders said. “We’re willing to work with communities who can get out there and trap (feral cats).” Second, the mobile unit can host vaccine clinics for family pets. It is important to ensure animals are current on protection from rabies, distemper, and other viruses. Third, the brightly colored trailer will be an eye-catching addition to promotional events. It is air-conditioned, so cats that are available for adoption will be able to rest comfortably for folks to meet inside. The open house will include self-guided tours of the Pet

Nate Brubaker recently joined the Saddlebag Riders, a team of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries, after reading a newspaper article about the group. “It said, ‘If you love Jesus and you love motorcycles, come on out,’” Brubaker recalled. “My wife and I will take any opportunity to meet people. She said I need to go do this, and I agreed.” Both Brubaker and his wife, Jessica, are motorcycle enthusiasts, and they have participated in several events hosted by the Saddlebag Riders. They also plan to be part of the next activity, which will be a Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) fundraising ride on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. No rain date has been set. Check-in for the ride will open at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church of Creswell, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga. The group of riders will depart the church at
2 p.m. and stop for ice cream at a local dairy. Road captain John Young has planned the route and will serve as the guide. “ We’ll be going through rolling hills, on all small back roads. They will be twisting and winding, but it will be a leisurely ride,” he said. The ride will return to the church at about 3 p.m., where riders and other guests may enjoy a picnic of pulled pork, hot dogs, chips, and beverages in the pavilion. Folks may attend the picnic even if they do not go on the ride. No prices have been set for the ride or the meal, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. “It’s a passion for a lot of us,” Saddlebag Riders secretary Gail Moore said, explaining why the team is raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project. “A lot of motorcyclists have been in the military.” Readers are encouraged to let
the team know they plan to participate in the event, but advance registration is not required. Folks are also welcome to join the group, which meets at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month at Bethany Church. The Saddlebag Riders like to host events that appeal to the motorcycle community, and they also like to attend events to bridge the gap between motorcycle enthusiasts and the love of Jesus Christ. “We have a passion for motorcycles and people,” remarked team president Chuck Moore. For more information or to let the organizers know of plans to participate in the ride or picnic, readers may contact Chuck at 717-224-8790 or chuckmoore903@gmail.com. A take-home craft project for adults is planned for 1 p.m. The history tours will be led by pastor Mark Harris at 12:45 and 2:15 p.m. Attendees may enter to win giveaways and door prizes, including themed baskets with items from Columbia-area businesses, throughout the event. Children’s activities will include a variety of carnival-style games, face painting, and temporary tattoos. Nominal fees will be charged for the activities, with all proceeds from the event supporting church building improvements and mission donations. The anniversary celebration will continue with a special worship service on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 10:15 a.m. The Parish Life Team members organizing the celebration include Harris, Hilary Smith, Julie Bigler, and Scott and Denise Bollinger. Smith’s children are at least the fourth generation in her family to attend Historic Salem UCC, as her parents and grandparents were members of the church as well. Smith said it is possible that even her great-grandparents and other ancestors attended, too. Readers with questions are welcome to call the church at 717-684-6498.

The building was completed in 1806, with Lutheran and Reformed congregations meeting on alternate Sundays. “Salem” was chosen as a name for the church in 1821, and a formal agreement of joint ownership was drawn up between the two congregations. More details on the many changes that Historic Salem UCC went through as time progressed will be shared during tours of the church. The history tours will be among several activities happening at the church’s 215th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The community is welcome to attend. Live musical entertainment will kick off at 11:15 a.m. with performances by Juliana Schnee, a 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and jazz artist from Lancaster County. JoeNBroz will play at 1:15 p.m. Historic Salem UCC’s music facilitator, Steve Spiese, plays guitar in the band, which is also comprised of Tim Spiese on harmonica and Joe Dilorio on drums. LBC And Servant Stage To Produce “Titanic” Musical Wally Calderon, artistic director with Servant Stage Company, admits that there is an element of preconception in staging “Titanic,” the 1997 musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. “There is no surprise ending,” said Calderon of the musical that has been on his shortlist of shows for some time. Calderon loves the show because of its “character-driven depiction” of the historical events and the stories it tells that draw audience members into the story. “(Audience members grow) attached to the historical figures involved,” said Calderon. “That’s the magic of the show … the power of the story.” Calderon is working with Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer to bring the show to the stage in partnership
with Lancaster Bible College (LBC) at the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, for two weekends in September. “Titanic” will run on Fridays, Sept. 21 and 28, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. Calderon noted that the ensemble piece tells many stories rather than one story. “You are hearing every angle of the events that are happening as they’re happening,” he said. “You get a true feel for what it was like in third class and first class and among the officers and for the crew and second class … relationships between couples and what (individual) objectives and agendas are,” said Calderon. “Titanic” has been one of Bauer’s favorites as well. “(The show) swept the Tonys, (winning) best musical, score, book, orchestration,” said Bauer, who
added that the show is seldom staged because of its large cast of nearly 70 and its musical requirements. “To do it justice, it has got to have a full orchestra and a minimum of 40 incredible voices,” said Bauer. The show is musically demanding, featuring about 30 musical numbers. “The music is an integral part of the storytelling,” said Calderon. “Every scene is underscored with a theme or (musical) dynamics to make the audience feel what they’re supposed to feel.” Calderon added that the opening number, which is nearly 15 minutes long, is used as an introduction. “You meet the characters. You see the classes boarding. You see the crew assemble, and (the song) ends with the ship setting sail.”
Welcome ty York Coun s r e d a Re
During Act 1, musical numbers are used to tell the stories of the cast members, delving into their backgrounds, hopes, and dreams. “What a Remarkable Age This Is,” is sung by the first-class passengers on the promenade deck, followed by “Lady’s Maid,” a song that describes the hopes of third class passengers coming to America. Other standout songs include “The Telegraph Song” and “The Proposal.” During Act 2, figurative masks are dropped from the characters’ faces as the ship begins to sink. “In Act 2 you start to see the real people (in) how they react (to the disaster) - especially among the first-class and upper-level crew,” said Calderon. “You get inside the characters more, and it keeps you fully invested in (the story).” Such a heavy subject is not

Gridders Look to Rebound After Littlestown Loss by Eric Pyles
You can’t win them all is one of the few comforting thoughts that can ease the sting of a season’s first loss like the one Eastern York’s football team suffered on September 7th. The Golden Knights, winners of their first two games by an average of 27 points, were pushed from the unbeaten ranks courtesy of a 40-14 loss to Littlestown. Despite taking the hit, head coach Josh Campbell was not discouraged. “After the first loss of the season, it is always difficult,” said Campbell. “However, like any win, we reflect and move past Friday after our 10 AM Saturday practice.” Campbell and his staff will look for answers to correct a one game slip-up that saw the Golden Knights falter on both sides of the ball. Littlestown racked up 445 yards of offense, 395 of which came from the ‘Bolts ground attack while Eastern’s previously potent offense produced just 163 yards of offense. “We will look to find answers, but luckily all of the answers we need are within our 41 players,” said Campbell. “It is easy for everyone to stay aboard the ship when the waters are calm. It is important now with the rough

the game after Trevor Seitz hooked up with Dylan Zurin. The 26-yard strike came just 2:18 into the second stanza and cut the Thunderbolt lead down to 13-7. Unfortunately, that would be the high point of the first half as Jason Penton capped his banner game (seven carries for 124 yards and three scores) with touchdown runs of 80 and 22 yards to make it a 27-7 game at the break. Two more Littlestown TD runs came in the third quarter and despite being sandwiched around Eastern’s second score they pushed the game out of reach. That second Eastern touchdown came with 3:35 remaining in the third and briefly cut the deficit to 34-14. Demonte Martin was on the receiving end of this Seitz pass with the pitch and catch covering 25 yards. Martin added three more catches during the contest to finish with four grabs for 51 yards and the third quarPhoto by Deb Grove ter score. Zurin managed just one The Knights’ Drake Brown spars with Littlestown’s Malachi additional catch outside his TD, giving Fodor along the line of scrimmage in an inter-divisional contest him two catches for 35 yards. Kaleb Corwell’s team leading five catches for 62 yards and you get Seitz’s 11 of 16 for 148 yards and two TD game. Zach Grove picked up the final completion, finding Brayden Dedrick for one three-yard catch. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team finds themselves in an oddly balanced season with four games under their belt. The Golden Knights have gone...win-lossloss-win to sit at 2-2 with an aggregate score of 5-5 after both winning and losing games by 1-0 and 4-0 scores. Eastern York opened the season with a 1-0 win over ELCO and a 4-0 loss to Gettysburg to lay the groundwork for their balancing act. A 1-0 loss to a different Lancaster Lebanon League foe on September 8th led into a 4-0 win over Dover on the 11th to complete the balancing act. Lancaster Catholic handed the Golden Knights a 1-0 loss on the 8th with Jack Krady breaking up Brady Bixler’s (10 saves) shutout bid in the
63rd minute. Gavin Donnelly led the way in the Dover win by setting up two of the four scores. He helped put Eastern on the board in the first half by finding Zach Gross in the 31st minute and setup Andrew Hetter’s score in the 50th minute that made it 3-0. Avery Rhine netted the second goal with help from Nathan Robbins while Hailu Barrow capped the scoring in the 59th minute by converting a Torin Young pass. Bixler pickup the clean sheet thanks to five saves. GOLF The golf team used a few hours of dry weather on September 11th to squeeze in nine holes on Briarwood’s East Course for their fourth match of the season. Nate Hoyer finished in a four-way tie for seventh with a ninehole score of 43 to help the Golden Knights top Gettysburg for their second win. Dyson Renn (46), Jon Minneman (45) and Dylan Mealey (57) rounded out Eastern York’s scorers for the day giving the Golden Knights a 191 team score. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team suffered their first loss of the season on September 6th falling to Littlestown by a 1-0 count in a game effected by the weather. The start of the game was delayed by 30 minutes and was ultimately cut short because of the lingering lightning storms that plagued the mid-state. Kelsey Felix surrendered a first half score to Cailey Sentz but stonewalled the remaining nine shots she faced. The Lady Golden Knights rebounded nicely on September 8, blanking Muhlenberg, 2-0. Felix needed just one save to earn the shutout thanks to a ball control offense that posted 15

shots and 11 corners. Addison Malone and Hannah Lentz picked up the first half goals with Cassidy Arnold setting up Malone’s score and Lily Campbell finding Lentz for the two-goal cushion. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team has found the early portion of their season to be a bit more difficult then they imagined. The Lady Golden Knights did pick up their first win of the season but it was followed by two losses that leave them with a 1-3 mark. That lone victory came on September 6th by a 2-0 count over New Oxford. Cassidy Shetter put Eastern up 1-0 in the opening half while Krysten Strange gave the visitors some breathing room with her second half goal. Savannah Yingst needed three saves to post the shutout. Eastern found themselves on the opposite side of a shutout two days later when they traveled to Lancaster Catholic. The Lady Crusaders used two early Amanda Mueller scores to build a lead with Gabrielle Kambouroglos and Gabi Bruno tacking on additional insurance goals. Yingst finished with nine saves in the loss. The struggles continued on September 11th with a 6-1 loss to Dover. Another two quick goals from the opposition put Eastern York behind early but it was four second See Eastern pg 12

VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten on September 11th thanks to a 3-0 loss to York Suburban. Eastern played tough with the Lady Trojans in the first and third games, hanging around for 25-20 finals but Suburban took game two handily, 25-6. The Lady Golden Knights did enjoy success as well, topping Gettysburg 32 in what head coach Josh Korb called a “wild night up on the hill. He was referencing the back-and-forth affair that saw his squad win games two and four by scores of 25-11 and 25-14 while losing games one and three by identical 24-26 finals. “It really came down to some missed serves in those two games that threw us off of our rhythm, said Korb. “We have a fast and aggressive offense, but if we stop the flow every
half goals that spelled doom. That second half surge from Dover erased any momentum gained from Strange’s score late in the first half that made it a 2-1 game. Yingst finished with 12 saves in the loss. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team not only had to battle their opponents during the season’s first two meets they also had to battle the rainy weather that has plagued the area for much of the last few months. That battle produced matching 0-3 marks for the boys’ and girls’ on their September 11th trip to York Suburban with losses to the Trojans as well as Dallastown and South Western. The season opener went much better for the boy’s side while the girls’ suffered another 0-3 day despite Olivia McLain’s second place run. McLain’s 21:39 was not enough to counter strong team performances from Delone Catholic, Dover and Fairfield leading to the 0-3 day. On the boy’s side the Golden Knights placed all five scorers in the top 20 which led to a 2-1 mark with wins over Delone and Dover outweighing the Fairfield loss. Pierre Allard paced the boys’ by finishing sixth with a time of 20:02. Anthony Roselli crossed the line 40 seconds

In the sets we won, our hitters were able to keep the momentum of the game in our favor and our setter was able to spread the ball around nicely. The Lady Golden Knights were able to keep their rhythm in the decisive fifth set, winning 15-9 to seal the victory. Moore racked up 23 kills in the win while Morgan Dobbeck added 10 and Abby Smith 11. Lehman was the setter responsible for the majority of those kills, finishing with 42 assists to go with 11 digs, two kills and three aces. Eastern York took care of the Lady Falcons, winning 25-22 and 25-17 to set up a finals showdown with Panther Valley. The Lady Panthers claimed the championship, winning 25-14 and 25-19, leaving the Lady Golden Knights to settle for second in the 15-team field. “I was pleased with our efforts, said Korb, “We made some adjustments to our rotation to better balance our power on offense and our back row again did a fantastic job digging up the ball. Koicuba led that back row with 39 digs while Dobbeck added 26 digs. Lehman played a part in both the offense and defense with 13 aces and 19 digs.

Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s third annual Renovators’ Home Tour, set for Sept. 30, will showcase 14 homes in Manheim Township and Lancaster city.
The annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22. Clark Witman (left) takes bids for an item at a previous auction. The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year
will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of crafts and art. A farmers market will offer fresh produce and baked goods, including pies, made-on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza. New this year will be a tractor show and Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, which is a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, pickles, artisan bread, specialty nuts and pots. To learn more about the auction, readers may visit www.brethrenauction.org, call 717-723-6863 on the day of the auction or pick up an auction booklet at local retailers.
