Friends To Host Fall Book, Jewelry Sale By Chelsea Peifer

By Chelsea Peifer

The Battle of Mogadishu took place 25 years ago, but the details remain fresh in the mind of retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about being over there with my guys or something that happened over there,” said Ryan. “I remember it so vividly.” The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on Oct. 3 and 4 in 1993 as various United States military elite special operations units were in Mogadishu, Somalia, to destabilize the government and bring humanitarian aid, along with the support of UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia). Ultimately the goal of the See Mogadishu pg 3

Manheim resident and retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan (right), pictured with fellow soldier Kenny Haines, will travel to Fort Drum, N.Y., to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu on Oct. 3. Ryan and Haines fought together in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993.

The Hellam Township Public Works building, 45 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, will be transformed into a reader’s - and shopper’s - paradise as the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library host a fall book and jewelry sale on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29. The community is invited to peruse a selection of approximately 10,000 used books that will be sorted into categories for ease of shopping. Book genres will range from children’s and young adult to adult fiction and nonfiction. Among the variety of genres See Book Sale pg 6

mission was accomplished, but things became deadly during the Battle of Mogadishu. Details of the events were later published in the 1999 book “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War” by Mark Bowden and portrayed in the 2001 movie “Black Hawk Down.” As part of Second Platoon, Charlie Company, 2-14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Ryan was a part of the rescue force for the Battle of Mogadishu. Ryan recalled being in the mess hall, and while the food on that deployment had been notoriously terrible, on that particular day the cooks told everyone how excited they were to have gotten pork chops to serve. The mood quickly changed when Ryan looked out a window and saw thick black smoke rising from the area of the Bakaara Market, a dangerous zone where Somali military commander and political leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid resided. Shortly afterward, the battalion commander informed them that one United States Black Hawk helicopter had crashed in the city and another had crashed about 1 mile south, leaving 99 United States military personnel trapped in the city. “I gathered the guys and said if it were you, you’d want someone to do everything they could to get you out of there, so that’s what we’re going to do,” stated Ryan. “I also told them that night was going to define their lives - whether they fought bravely or not.” Halfway through the city, the Humvee line that Ryan

The second annual Mountville 5K will be held on Oct. 13. Proceeds will benefit Save A Warrior, which offers weeklong retreats for military personnel, veterans, and first responders who are living with post-traumatic stress.

Second Annual Mountville 5K Set For Oct. 13 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“It was a slam-bang success,” Kathi Markley said of the first Mountville 5K, which she helped to plan last year. “The weather was perfect.” A total of 120 people registered for the race, and $10,000 was raised for Save A Warrior (SAW), an organization Ronald “Jake” Clark of Mount Joy founded in order to offer first responders, active-duty military personnel, and veterans another option for dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The first weeklong retreat was held on SAW’s newly purchased property in Ohio earlier this month. “Because they don’t have to rent a venue, the cost per person has decreased, so more people can participate,” commented Mountville 5K chair Theresa Baker. “The experiences while they’re there will help them push through the effects of trauma. The goal is to help them break through barriers (so they can thrive in) civilian life.” “They’re learning how to live daily life

with PTSD,” added Mountville 5K committee member Jayme Chandler. The cost for a cohort of 10 people to go through the program is $35,000, and the committee is aiming to reach that amount through the second annual Mountville 5K, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13. Registration and packet pickup will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Mountville Area Community Center’s gymnasium, 120 College Ave., and the race will start at 8:30 a.m. from the parking lot of Mountville Elementary School, 200 College Ave. Presentations of awards and the door prize drawings will be held in front of the school. In the event of rain, the award ceremony will take place in the school’s gymnasium. The Mountville 5K is open to runners and walkers of all ages. Pets will not be permitted on the course, but pets on leashes will be welcome at the race headquarters. The committee described the course as “fast, fun, and mostly flat.” Participants will run past Field of Screams and through Mountville parks and neighborhoods. Most roads will not be closed to traffic. Miles 1, 2, and 3 will be marked, and the race will be professionally timed. SAW dog tags and gift cards will be presented to the overall male

and female champions age 49 and younger and to the overall male and female masters champions age 50 and older. The top three men and women in age bracket groupings will receive SAW dog tags. There is a cost to participate in the Mountville 5K. Folks who register by Sunday, Sept. 30, will receive a discount and be guaranteed a tech T-shirt. Participants may register after that date and at the event for full price. Online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 10. T-shirts will be available as supplies last. All registered participants will be entered in the door prize drawings. Folks must be present to win. Interested individuals who would like to support the fundraiser but are unable to take part in the race may participate as virtual runners. They may run 5 kilometers at a convenient time and location or opt out of the activity. Everyone registering as a virtual runner will receive a race package, including the event T-shirt if they sign up by the deadline. To register for the Mountville 5K, readers may visit https://donate.savea warrior.org/mountvilleSAW5K. Questions may be emailed to mountville5k @gmail.com. coffee will be available for purchase as well. Most of the books for the Friends’ semiannual book sales have been donated by area residents and library patrons. Friends members work throughout the year to sort through donations in a small trailer parked beside the library. Donation of quality used books may be dropped off at the library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, during regular hours of operation, which are as follows: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Proceeds from the two-day fall sale will benefit the Kreutz Creek Valley Library. “The Friends always support our summer programs, and because of their generosity we had the National Aquarium come and do a program,” said library director Susan Nenstiel, adding that funds from the Friends also supported a visit from “Learn Listen Play,” a mobile music education program based in Philadelphia. “Just having the funds to be able to do that is wonderful, and we are so grateful,” Nenstiel remarked. The Friends also support the Summer Reading Program, which boasted more than 600 registrants for 2018. In addition to fundraising, the Friends help to promote library awareness and work together to help improve and expand library service. Currently the Friends are led by president Sue Zenow, vice president Kimberly Judy, treasurer Richard Blumenthal, and secretary Linda Nevers. New members are always welcome and may stop in at the library to inquire about joining. In February 2019, the Kreutz Creek Library will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Youth Choir Members Visit Indonesia lims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and ChristianMuslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive

Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a shortterm mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple

fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to go through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other shortterm applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. The choir’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. MCCL’s five different groups - one of which is the Chamber Choir - have a total of approximately 170 members representing 75 congregations from 17 denominations. A program of Lancaster Mennonite School, MCCL also includes students from 53 schools, as well as homeschooled students.

Tide Gridders Top PV For First Season Win The fall sports season at Columbia High School is well underway and despite not many wins, Crimson Tide athletes are getting high marks for effort and determination. It’s a little bit of a different look this season in terms of teams the Tide is playing as the Lancaster-Lebanon League has expanded and realigned. Octorara has been added to Section 3 in all sports and Ephrata and Lebanon are now in Section 3 in football. Here is your weekly fall sports report. FOOTBALL It took about a year and a half but the Columbia football team ended its losing streak with a 25-13 win over Pequea Valley. The win was the Tide’s first in their last 14 games and first since the end of the 2016 season when they beat Kennard-Dale. “I was lost for words and what to say about my guys after our first win of the season. It was my first win as a high school head coach, but the smile on the faces of these young men was priceless,” said Bud Kyle after the win. It was a start to finish first win for the Tide. Quarterback Matt McCleary had a huge game calling signals, completing 14 of 24 passes and three touchdowns, two of them in the first half to Demetrius DiazEllis, covering 10 and 67 yards. His third scoring strike was a 17 yard pass to Justin Elliot. Columbia wrapped up its scoring in the second half on a “pick six” from linebacker Matt Gambler. The Tide gained 234 yards for the game. five catches for 100 yards while Luke McGinnis was the team’s leading rusher with 44 yards on 15 carries and he also caught two passes for 14 yards. “This moment was all for them and they deserve it. All off season they worked hard to have opportunities like last night,” said Kyle. “So many people doubted them, but like we always say we are a family. Not one kid missed practice just to miss practice, they see the endless possibilities ahead. “With only having three seniors on the roster the future is very bright,” he continued. “I want to thank my coaches for not only a great job but sticking it out through tough days. If it was easy everyone would do it. I am so proud and happy for these young men. Time to keep this momentum going,” Kyle said.

VOLLEYBALL Coach David Farley and his volleyball team have good numbers as they continue to look for their first win in over two years. The Tide fields a varsity/junior varsity roster of 16 including captains Onyx Rodriquez, Desiree Torres and Meghan Brass. Last week, the Tide had matches with the Linville Hill Christian School (out of Christiana), Lancaster Catholic and Cocalico. Columbia was swept in all three matches but had some outstanding performances from Melina Mowrer with a high number of kills and digs and Yaniska Del Valle, who is leading the team in kills, digs and assists. TENNIS For the first time in a number of seasons, Columbia is

playing with a full team in and is very competitive under coach Jim Rhoads. The Tide, until the football team’s victory, had the school’s lone fall win. That happened in the opening match of the season against Red Lion. One of the highlights was a recent 4-0 loss to powerhouse Lancaster Catholic, where the team was lauded for their effort despite the final score. Team members are Melanie Cruz-Bernard, Rosie Diaz, Julissa Santos, Grace Misciagna, Brittnie Betteley (captain) and Skye Garner. Eastern Volleyball Tops William Penn, L-S by Eric Pyles

Two steps forward and one step back could be the current working title for the Eastern York girls’ volleyball season. The reason, the Lady Golden Knights have twice posted back-to-back victories only to fall on the opposite side of the final in both of their three-peat attempts. The most recent three game stretch saw Eastern top William Penn and Lampeter-Strasburg before falling to Division II co-leader West York with the highlight being the 3-1 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg on September 17th. “We really came together against L-S and everything just clicked,” said head coach Josh Korb, “L-S is a good team and had some powerful hitters.” The Lady Pioneers may be a good team but, on this night, Eastern York was better, racking up 35 kills and 32 assists with 42 digs and 18 aces, leading to wins of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-21. Lampeter-Strasburg did manage to steal game three 25-23 but Eastern was able to regain control to collect the win. Sarah Moore (15 kills and two aces) and Katie Lehman (28 assists and six aces) led the offense while Morgan Winter (nine digs) and Olivia Koicuba (11 digs) did the same on defense. A few days prior Eastern York topped William Penn 3-0 with easy wins of 25-6, 25-13 and 25-12. Korb rested the bulk of his starters starting with the second game leading to new names populating the stats sheet. Ally Willich tallied 19 assists and two aces while Alyssa Noll and Desiree Myers had four kills each. Noll added five aces while Moore collected three kills and four aces.

Eastern’s Sarah Moore drives a shot between a pair of Lampeter-Strasburg blockers during the Golden Knights’ 3-1 nonleague win at home last Monday.

Katie Lehman makes a bump set for the Golden Knights during their 3-1 nonleague victory over Lampeter-Strasburg last Monday at Eastern.

The two-game winning streak came to a sudden stop on September 18th with a 3-0 loss to West York. The Lady Bulldogs won 25-18, 25-20 and 25-17. “We just didn’t show up to play and let our heads get in the way,” said Korb. Moore (14 kills), Lehman (17 assists) and Koicuba (15 digs) led the way in the loss. CROSS COUNTRY The Golden Knights cross country team made the trek to Newville on September 15th to dip their toes in the big meet waters for the first time this season. The result was a 16th place finish for the Lady Golden Knights at the

23rd Annual Ben Bloser Bulldog Cross Country Invitational and a 19th place finish for the boy’s side. Olivia McLain took top honors for Eastern, picking up a bronze medal with a time of 19:50.36. Fiona Valore (26:14.68) and Abigail Ferry (26:22.60) also cracked the top 100 with Valore taking 97th and Ferry 99th in the 144person AA field. Savannah Conley and Alanna Falk rounded out the top five with Conley taking 121st with a time of 28:18.42 and Falk 128th with a time of 29:16.55. Just two boy’s runners, Pierre Allard and Chase Reed, cracked the top 100 in the 179-person AA field but a third, Anthony Roselli, was a near miss. Roselli covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:05.80, finishing 102nd and missing the top 100 by roughly two

seconds. Allard led the way on the boy’s side, clocking an 18:52.85 which was good enough for 53rd place. Reed was next to finish, doing so in 97th place with a time of 19:58.07. Tyler Druck and Connor Atkins completed Eastern’s scoring five with Druck in 108th place and Atkins in 119th place. Eastern York returned to regular meet action on the 18th, hosting Central York, Northeastern, Red Lion and Kennard-Dale in the third meet of the season. The result was matching 0-4 marks for both squads. Once again McLain was the top runner, taking third with a time of 21:48. Allard was the only other Eastern York runner to post a top 20 finish, taking 12th with a time of 20:03. GIRLS’ SOCCER Oh so close!!
