Art Heist Will Benefit Shelter

If live entertainment plus food, art and wine in a beautiful setting sounds like the recipe for a fun night, check out the Art & Wine Heist, to benefit the Columbia Animal Shelter. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at River’s Edge at Long Level, 1829 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

“People can expect a fantastic evening by the water,” said Tammy Jalbert, executive director of the shelter. “(They will have) a chance to bid on different medias of artwork from photos, drawings, paintings, stained glass, wood carvings and more. There truly is something for just about everyone.” All art is donated by local artists, both amateur and professional, she noted.

For years, people looked forward to the annual Bridge Bust, a craft and vendor show held on the Route 462 bridge across the Susquehanna River. When that event ended a few years ago, Kim Rightnour stepped up to fill the void.

Rightnour, the owner of Kim’s Prim co in Columbia, is organizing the Chickies Rock Women of the Moose Crafting for a Cause Fall Craft Show. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St.

“We are 100% crafts, and everything our crafters sell is handmade,” Rightnour noted. “Almost everything is local, sourced locally and handmade locally. These are one-ofa-kind items.”

This year’s show will feature many returning crafters and several new ones, she remarked. Participants will

include Craft Soup, which makes handcrafted jewelry, and Sharon Roth, who creates handmade quilts. “Virgin Iron is coming in this year as a new crafter,” Rightnour said. “They do beautiful metal flowers and ornaments for your yard.”

She added that Steph’s HalfBaked Homestyle Baked Oatmeal will also be featured, serving up a variety of flavors, and several local nonprofits and businesses will have tables at the craft show, including Columbia-based Keystone Artisan Werks.

“We will have Katie Stewart from The Inversion Co. performing acrobatics on aerial silks,” Rightnour said, “and we’re also going to be offering free face painting for children.” The face painting will be provided by WolfPack, a Columbiabased nonprofit. Each crafter will donate an item to be featured in giveaway drawings throughout the craft show, Rightnour said.

Proceeds from the event will

benefit the projects of Columbia Moose Lodge, including donations to local food banks and holiday programs, as well as national programs. Moose International supports Mooseheart, a group home for children, and Moosehaven, a retirement community.

Rightnour said the craft show is the perfect opportunity for the Women of the Moose to underscore the group’s mission while providing people with a fun shopping experience. “We are an extremely community-oriented group, so it’s important for us to be involved in our community,” she stated. “The setting for this show is beautiful. We love showing off the river park. It’s gorgeous. And our crafters will have lots of items to start your holiday shopping - from Halloween items to Thanksgiving and Christmas items.”

For more information on the craft show, search for “Crafting for a Cause Holiday Craft Show” on Facebook.

“This is a very family-oriented day,” said Elaine Jackson, event chair. “There are lots of games for children to play, and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River.”

Children’s festivities will include information about Johnny Appleseed, apple activities, a coloring station, Frisbee throwing, jumping rope and more.

Food options will include grilled bratwurst, hot dogs, homemade baked beans, applesauce, cider, soup, chips and a variety of apple

The festival will feature a silent auction of items donated by local businesses. “We usually have mums and other fall flowers, donated by River Road Produce in Marietta,” Jackson remarked. “Nissley Vineyards gives us tickets to events, and M&M Mars always donates to our auction.”

Live bluegrass music will be performed by South Mountain, and Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge will present an educational program about insects. Darl Williams will serve freshpressed apple cider from his antique cider press.

Proceeds from the Apple Fall Festival will go toward the preservation and restoration of the mansion, which was the home of Samuel Haldeman, a renowned 19thcentury naturalist. Currently, the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society is working to restore mantels above the fireplaces located inside the mansion.

Fashion Show Seeks Entrants

The Trashion Fashion Avant Garb Show is looking for creators to enter the event, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Switchboard Gallery, on the second floor of 40 N. Third St., Columbia.

All costumes must be made from recycled, reused or repurposed items. As the name implies, the emphasis is on recycling materials that might ordinarily be thrown out once they have served their intended purpose. Creators may model the outfit or they may have a model, but the creator must be present for the show.

Each entry will be judged in one of three categories: children age 10 and under, youths ages 11 to 17 or adults age 18 and over. A complete list of rules and an entry form may be found at https://tinyurl.com/22ce6d2p. There is no entry fee.

Hors d’oeuvres prepared by John Wright Restaurant will be featured, and Duane Slaymaker will provide live music. The “wine heist” portion of the evening will offer an opportunity to participate in a fun game, Jalbert said, explaining that participants will pay one price to choose a random bottle of wine from a table. “Each bottle will be covered in bags, so that supporters will have no idea which wine they’re pulling,” she remarked. “The bottles will range in price, so depending on their luck, attendees might walk home with a bottle that’s priced significantly higher than what they paid.”

All proceeds from the Art & Wine Heist will go toward the purchase of equipment for the animal shelter’s veterinary clinic. “We are looking to purchase X-ray and ultrasound equipment,” Jalbert commented.

She noted that community support for the event has allowed the shelter to continue its mission of serving ani-

mals in Columbia. “This is our fifth annual Art & Wine Heist, and the generosity of the artisans in this community continues to be just beyond what we could dream,” she stated. “This event would not happen without the continued support year after year.”

Event sponsors include Murray and Donegal Insurance Group. The venue is donated by River’s Edge at Long Level. Kleen-Rite Corp. will donate beer. Wine will be donated by M&T Bank, and the entertainment will be sponsored by Legacy Law. “Our event sponsors and donors who make this event happen are the best,” Jalbert remarked, “and we are most appreciative.”

There is still time to donate art for the event, Jalbert said, noting that the deadline for donations is Wednesday, Oct. 5. The deadline to purchase tickets for the Art & Wine Heist is Thursday, Oct. 20. To purchase tickets, stop by the shelter at 265 S. 10th St., Columbia. For more information, call 717-681-6858.

Other award winners include Rylee and Jackson Diffenderfer, Inspirational Athlete of the Year, and Bob Diller, Volunteer of the Year. Also honored will be the 2022 High School Senior Athletes of the Year, as recognized by a local newspaper: Braetan Peters, AnnvilleCleona High School, and Ryan Brubaker, Cocalico High School.

Live music will be featured on outdoor stages at both locations, said Dodd Gross, entertainment director of McCleary’s.

“Pre-COVID, Marietta bar venues had two pub crawls a year,” Gross stated. As Craig Trissler, owner of River Trail Brewing, explained, “We had a meeting with other restaurant owners to discuss events that would help bring people to the area, and we decided to try music festivals to replace the pub crawls.” The first event, the Marietta Music and Beer Fest, was held in July. The Blues and Brews Street Festival will operate in much the same way, Gross said. “We set up our street stage in the middle of the street with two bands,” he recalled. “So, we’re going to do it again at the Blues and Brews.”

At McCleary’s, Moe Blues will perform from 1 to 3 p.m. Gross described the group as “an awesome traditional harmonica-driven blues band from Lancaster.” From 4 to 6 p.m., Six Whiskey Revival will entertain. “They perform hard-driving blues and rock,” Gross remarked. After the official festival concludes, Little Buddy Blues Band will perform inside McCleary’s from 9 to 11:30 p.m. At River Trail Brewing, the Octavia Blues Band will perform for the duration of the festival. The four-piece group features

high-energy blues mixed with jazz, funk and R&B.

Trissler said the Blues and Brews Street Festival is meant to bring people into Marietta, to showcase restaurants in the town and to provide a fun afternoon. “McCleary’s and our place are the places that will have a stage, but Nick’s Bistro and Shank’s Tavern are also participating,” he stated.

Front Street will be closed to traffic, allowing festivalgoers to peruse vendors, enjoy food trucks and take in everything the festival will offer, he said, adding, “People will be able to see great musicians and have really good food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere.”

For more information on the event, search for “Blues & Brews Street Festival” on Facebook.

Tapas Shindig To Benefit North Star Initiative

Giving women an opportunity to hope again. That’s part of the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI), a nonprofit that works to combat human trafficking. You can help support that mission by attending the Tapas Shindig. The fundraising event will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

The evening will feature networking time, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program, a live auction and dessert and coffee. This is the fourth year for the Tapas Shindig, said Janelle Esbenshade, interim executive director of NSI. “In 2019, we wanted to create an event that was nontraditional from the typical sit-down dinner experience,” she explained. “(We wanted) to offer individuals an opportunity to connect with one another in the community over good food and drinks while learning about the mission of North Star and how they can help support survivors of sex trafficking.”

NSI was founded in 2010 with

a goal of providing physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care with a Christ-centered focus. The organization operates The Harbor, a restoration home and program for female survivors of human trafficking. “The program is strengthsbased, tailored to the survivors’ individual needs and matched to their current stage of change,” Esbenshade stated. “Each woman participates in individual and group therapy; has access to basic medical, dental and legal services; and receives an education and job-skills training. Our goal is for each survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored so she can return to the community

and enjoy a life of sustained independence.”

NSI estimates that tens of thousands of people are victims of sex trafficking in the United States, and the organization turns away up to 10 survivors a week due to lack of space. To serve more survivors, NSI launched a capital campaign to raise funds to build the Survivor Center adjacent to The Harbor. Along with providing restoration services and treatment for local survivors who do not require housing, the center will now house NSI’s offices and programming, allowing an 80% increase in

occupancy at The Harbor.

Esbenshade said the Tapas Shindig will allow people to celebrate the completion of the Survivor Center and will help to continue to raise awareness of the need for NSI’s services. “Come for a fun evening and connect with the community to better understand the issue of sex trafficking happening all around us,” she remarked, “while hearing stories of hope, healing and restoration.”

The registration deadline for the Tapas Shindig is Friday, Oct. 7. To register, visit https://bidpal.net/nsi or text NSI to 243725.
