Sample global cuisine at an International Gourmet Gala Visit the past on a Haunted Lantern Tour

Themembers of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia come from a vast array of backgrounds and nationalities. Now they’re inviting you to sample cuisine from their countries while enjoying live music, fellowship and fun at an International Gourmet Gala. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the St. Peter Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia.

St. Peter was once known as the “Irish Parish,” reflecting the ethnicity of its founders, who built the first church in 1828. The Potato Famine in their mother country continued to bring Irish immigrants to the United States and to Columbia for decades, where many found work on the Philadelphia-Columbia Railroad.

Irish priests from St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster were sent to Columbia one Sunday a month to serve members of St. Peter. On the remaining Sundays, parishioners rode to Lancaster on horseback to attend Mass.

Waves of immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought German and Italian Catholics, followed by newcomers from all over the world, and the parish of St. Peter became a true melting pot of cultures.

“Years ago, the parish did individual nights representing different ethnicities from our church,” recalled Carole Bitts, who is helping to organize the gala. “This year, spontaneously, several people came up with the idea of doing it all in one night.”

Sylvia Garner, who is also on the gala committee, said committee members approached people in the parish who were known for their cooking, including the family that makes Loreto’s marinara sauce and Josie McCleary, the

church secretary, who makes Filipino egg rolls.

Foods from Mediterranean countries, Northern Europe, the British Isles, India, Asia, Africa, the Philippines and the Caribbean will be served. Young adults of the parish will serve the buffet style meal and lend a hand with cleanup.

The menu will include hors d’oeuvres of German soft pretzels and Mexican guacamole with chips; Italian pasta; lumpiang Shanghai Filipino egg rolls; Polish pierogies and kielbasa; Caribbean haricots verts aux amandes (green beans almondine); Mediterranean stuffed grape leaves and hummus; Irish colcannon; Indian naan; and

There’s a war raging in Columbia, and you’re invited to join in - if you dare. Rivertown Theatre Productions will present Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, “Civil War,” beginning on Friday, Oct. 13.

The annual, nonprofit tour will kick off at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 616 Locust St., before guests will venture through Mount Bethel Cemetery, guided by lantern light on the one-hour tour.

“The state of Pennsylvania is well known as a prominent player in the American Civil War with its substantial contribution of military supplies and soldiers,” said Sara Mimnall, owner of Rivertown Theatre Productions and producer and director of Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, adding that everyone is familiar with the Battle of Gettysburg. “But it was Columbia, its citizens, and the historical events that took place an entire month before the famed event in Gettysburg that

Safety

As a safety specialist and a father, Scott Palermo likes to ask parents a question: “What would you be willing to do to keep your children safe?”

“Most parents would say they’d do anything,” said the founder and president of Talk About Safety. “So, I ask them, ‘Would you be willing to invest an hour of your time to keep your children safe?’”

Parents can do just that when they sign up for a Talk About Safety event with their children. Palermo will offer two sessions, one for youths

ages 6 to 12 and their parents at 10 a.m. and one for teens and adults age 13 and up at 11 a.m. Both programs will be held at the Lower Windsor Township building, 2425 Craley Road, Wrightsville, on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Palermo, whose day job is serving as sales manager for a two-way radio company, also operates a martial arts studio in York. He has a black belt in Kenpo karate, and he realized his skill set, combined with the connections to law enforcement he’d made through his sales job, provided the perfect opportunity to start a new

organization. Talk About Safety is a 501(c)(3) organization focused on providing information and resources for parents and children.

Topics covered in the October sessions will range from dangers to prevention, instructing participants on ways to get away from threats both in person and in an online setting.

“A couple of my martial arts instructors will work with the kids, showing them ways to attract attention if they need help or how to get away in a dangerous situation,” Palermo said. “At the same time, I’ll meet separately with the parents, providing additional

resources and information so they can better educate themselves on how to protect their kids.”

One of the tips Palermo offers is to never shout, “Help!” if approached by a stranger or if you’re facing danger. “People don’t respond to that,” he explained. “They think it’s just a kid acting up.

I teach kids to say, ‘I don’t know you!’ or ‘This isn’t my father!’ to draw attention and get help.”

The Talk About Safety program is being offered free of charge in a partnership with Eastern York Recreation Authority. Advance registration is requested by Wednes-

Fall Bazaar will feature treasures and bargains

You’re invited to go treasure hunting at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ. The church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St., will hold its annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“You never know what you’re going to find,” said event chair Chrisie Emswiler. “Somebody’s junk is another person’s treasure. There’s treasure to be found here.”

The bazaar will feature tables set up both inside and outside the church, depending on the weather.

Gala frompg 1

Blue Smoke Soul Food.

Desserts will include French petit fours and German kuchen.

Live music will be performed by Al Schultz and other musicians, featuring members of the church choir as soloists. “We’ll have music from many of the countries represented, and we’ll have room for dancing,” Bitts said.

Garner envisions the social hall full of people for the gala. “We are encouraging all community members to come,

“We’ll have toys, glassware, books, stuffed animals, household items, baby items,” Emswiler noted. “We don’t have clothing, but we’ll have hats and linens. We’ll have some Christmas stuff.”

Free coffee and doughnuts will also be available during the event.

“We will also have at least three (giveaway) baskets,” she said. “The church is putting together a Christmas basket with things like wrapping paper, bows, baking items for Christmas cookies. Someone else donated a light-up birdhouse, so we’ll give that away.

And you do not need to be present to win.”

Proceeds from the Fall Bazaar are used by the church to support various missions and activities.

“We have a prayer blanket ministry,” Emswiler shared. “We have a church member who makes blankets, and she prays over every knot that she puts in that blanket, and then the whole church will pray over the blanket. Then the blanket goes to someone who needs it who is in the hospital or sick or recently experienced a loss.”

She encourages everyone to come to the bazaar to hunt for a bargain. “Everything is priced to sell, and if you don’t like a price, make an offer,” she stat-

ed. “Starting at 1 p.m., most things will be marked down to half price.”

Maytown Reformed Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., both in person and on Zoom. Events like the bazaar help the church continue to operate even though the congregation is small.

“We are a small church, but we are mighty,” Emswiler said. “We have a wonderful pastor, and everyone is very inviting. They include everybody, and it’s just a comfortable church.”

Donations are still being accepted for the bazaar and will be taken through Monday, Oct. 16. To make a donation, call or text Emswiler at 717-468-6601.

not just Catholics and not just members of our parish,” she said. “It’s going to be great food because we have some wonderful chefs in our parish. It’s not a formal event, but it can be fancy. Just be sure you dress comfortably for dancing.”

Seating is limited for the gala, and reservations are required by Sunday, Oct. 15. For more information or to make a reservation, call the parish office at 717-684-7070.

supplied history archives with the timeline of the end of the war that made the world what it is today.”

She emphasized that the tour won’t just feature recitation of historic war facts, but will instead be an interactive event. “Our characters include prominent public figures, an Irish immigrant, soldiers representing both sides of the war, field nurses, orphaned children and so much more,” she explained. “We have brought all walks of life together to re-enact the trials and tribulations faced by our town in the 1860s.”

Mimnall said the tour offers people an opportunity to enjoy original theater in a fun and spooky setting.

“How many people can say they’ve attended a theatrical performance written, directed and rehearsed right in their hometown?” she said. “I write an original script for each production every year. I’m constantly recording new ideas and notes on things I want to include. I could be researching a historical figure’s life history and come across something unexpected and suddenly end up down a rabbit hole of

information on an entirely different subject. But that’s all part of the fun.”

Mimnall has always had an interest in the Civil War, and she tapped into the knowledge of longtime friend and lifelong Columbia resident Cindy Beaston for this year’s tour. Beaston is a longtime Civil War enthusiast, and she’ll portray a Union soldier in the tour.

Mimnall also pointed out that the title of the tour, using the word “haunted,” can be a little misleading. “The tour is the perfect combination of historical education and theatrical entertainment,” she said. “I want to make it abundantly clear that we are not a horror attraction. The haunted aspect comes into play with the assistance of the costumed actors who portray ghosts from the past to tell their tales or re-enact local historic events, allowing guests to feel as if they’re experiencing a historical moment right as it was taking place.”

Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the last tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21, and at 8 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 15 and 22. A cash concession stand will be available before and after the tour. All tours are rain or shine. Tickets may be purchased by calling Holly at 717-587-5368.

Community invited to 5K and Fall Fest

For more than 20 years, Ginger Goudie taught students at The Janus School in Mount Joy, making an impact every day.

“She taught math, and she also taught our junior and senior success classes, where she helped students with internships and opportunities to be more involved in the community,” said James Dempsey, dean of students. “She was also a big fan of fall and a big fan of the outdoors. She was an incredible person who gave it her all in the classroom and outside the classroom for our students.”

Goudie passed away from cancer last November, and the staff members at The Janus School wanted to honor her memory. They are organizing the Ginger Goudie Memorial 5K and The Janus School Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 28. The events will be held at the school, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.

“We think it’s absolutely important to remember her and her legacy,” noted Dempsey, who added that all profits from the 5K will support the Ginger Goudie Financial Aid Fund.

The 5K will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a kids’ half-mile fun run at 11:30 a.m. The Fall Fest will also begin at 11:30 a.m.

Medals will be awarded for various age groups in the 5K, and trophies will be presented to the top male and top female finisher.

The Fall Fest will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including bounce houses, crafts and food. Food trucks onsite will be Gourmet Julie’s Way, Noel’s Café, Stoney’s Burgers and Fries, What’s For Supper and TJ’s Ice Cream.

The festivities are open to anyone in the community, and head of school Heather Strunk hopes the day will raise awareness of everything The Janus School does.

“We are the only K to 12 independent school for students with learning differences in southcentral Pennsylvania,” Strunk explained. “We serve students in six countiesBerks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.”

The Janus School currently has 74 students enrolled, but new students are accepted throughout the school year, she noted.

“We’re working to empower our students to be the best

versions of themselves and to become lifelong learners and problem-solvers,” Strunk remarked. “We want to set them up for academic and personal success after leaving The Janus School.”

She emphasized that many parents comment on the support their children receive at The Janus School.

“Many of our students were not thriving in other placements,” she said. “They weren’t getting a lot of positive feedback, and the parents never heard things their child can do. We focus on strengths here. Children at The Janus School can feel seen, safe and valued.”

Dempsey noted that Goudie would appreciate the purpose of the 5K and Fall Fest. “This would be important to her, because she valued community,” he said. “She’d be excited to see everyone come out for this. You can walk or run and then walk around and check out the Fall Fest activities. Come get to know a part of your town you maybe didn’t know existed before.”

For more information on the 5K and Fall Fest and to register for the race, visit https://the janusschool.org/fallfest.
