Helooks sort of like a baby Bigfoot, and he’s rumored to live somewhere in the Columbia area. He also loves apples.
He’s the Albatwitch, and he’ll be celebrated at the ninth annual Albatwitch Day, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 8. The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St.
“This is a multifaceted event,” said Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival with Chris Vera. “There is so much happening.”
Although the official festival does not begin until 11 a.m., Vera noted that Ryan Sexton will be giving tours of the dungeon below the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 9 a.m. to noon.
“It’s a nice way to give people a taste of the Market House before they head to the river,” he stated.
The festival will feature speakers, authors, live music, vendors and more. The Susquehanna National Heritage Area will offer free Wilderness Inquiry
Canoemobile tours on the Susquehanna River from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a fleet of 24-foot, 10-passenger canoes. Trolley tours will run throughout the day, giving participants a chance to hear some of the history of the area. From 7 to 9 p.m., haunted trolley tours will be featured. “We’ll also have ‘Alba’ at the festival,” Vera said. “She’ll be dressed up like the Albatwitch, and she’ll carry a basket of apples. People can take selfies with her.”
Vera estimated there will be more than 50 vendors on-site for the festival, featuring everything from handmade jewelry to food. “We’ll have a variety of nonprofits and organizations represented, including Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which is always very popular,” said Fisher. “They’ll be bringing some of their animals.” The Indian Steps Museum will have a table, and the Lancaster PA Ghostbusters will be on-site. Local churches, including Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will operate food stands. Live music will be per-
formed by Dillweed, Stone Soup, Sound Method and Tang Moon.
Inside Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, a variety of speakers will present programs. Speakers will include Mary Fabian, founder of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Project; Eric Altman, executive director of the PA Bigfoot Society; and Tim Renner, creator of the “Strange Familiars” podcast.
Vera noted that Albatwitch Day draws visitors from all over the East Coast, as far away as Virginia, New York and New Jersey. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, located at 21 N. Second St.
“You’ll have a good time at this event,” Fisher said. “If you don’t want to learn more about the Albatwitch, you can listen to music or eat or shop or take a canoe ride or a trolley tour. There’s really something for everybody.”

Honoring
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Speaking at a breakfast to honor two graduates of Columbia High School, Columbia Education Foundation (CEF) secretary Vickie Anspach used a quote she attributed to Leonardo da Vinci to sum up the achievements of the honorees: “People of accomplishment rarely
sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Those words, she noted, reflect the dedication Robert “Bob” A. Herman Jr. and John “Jack” A. Yohe have given to Columbia over the years. Both were recognized as the newest members of the Columbia High School Distinguished Alumni on Sept. 27.

Attend a lecture by local historian Lynn Smoker, and you’re likely to be in for a surprise. “Lynn’s an engaging speaker who knows our local history inside and out,” said Sophia Vayansky, program coordinator for Susquehanna National Heritage Area. “You will hear some stories about our town that you’ve never heard before and will, hopefully, gain a deeper appreciation for how much history is packed into Columbia’s riverfront.” Smoker will speak at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 7 p.m.

CEF board member Deb Smith introduced Herman, noting, “It’s really a privilege to have him as part of our community.” A 1972 graduate of Columbia High School, where he played football and was on the wrestling team, Herman served as a police officer in both Columbia Borough and East Hempfield Township before being appointed as a magisterial district judge in 1984, a position he kept until his retirement in 2015. Herman served as president of the Lancaster County Magisterial District Judge Association four times over his 32 years of service. In retirement, he serves as senior magisterial district judge, presiding over DUI and domestic violence hearings at the Lancaster County courthouse. His service to Columbia includes being past secretary and current president of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Sports Hall of Fame and serving as a part of the Columbia Memorial Day committee. Herman has been married to his wife, Sylvia, for 49 years. He is the father of two children and has two grandsons. “I’m honored and
humbled by this award,” Herman said upon receiving the accolade.
Herman introduced his fellow award winner, whom he said will always be “Coach Yohe” to him. Yohe, a 1953 graduate of Columbia High School, was co-captain of the 1952 football team, which was the county scoring champion, a record that still stands today. He taught at Columbia High School for 24 years and at Hempfield High School for 10 years. He also served as football coach for 35 years between the two schools and as the Columbia High School varsity track coach for 14 years. He was selected to the Columbia High School Hall of Fame four times and in 1981 was the recipient of the Jimmy Sheckard Award from the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for outstanding contributions and dedication to sports in the local area. After retiring from coaching, he stayed active in promoting Columbia football, including serving as chair of the Columbia High School 100th Anniversary Football Centennial Committee. Married to Margaretta for 56 years, he is the father of three daughters and has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Noting that his hometown has always been an important part of his life, Yohe told the breakfast crowd, “You can take the boy out of Columbia, but you can’t take Columbia out of the boy.”
Both Herman and Yohe received plaques to take home, honoring their contributions to Columbia, and were also presented with plaques that will be displayed on the wall of fame at the high school.

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.
It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place

For more than two centuries, the Susquehanna riverfront was a hub of commercial and industrial activities, including lumbering, ice harvesting, railroading and milling, Vayansky stated. As these industries waned, Columbians came to the river to swim, boat, fish and recreate with family and friends. Smoker will share stories from this historic place over the years, Vayansky remarked, and after the lecture, participants will be invited to explore “Columbia’s Storied Places,” an exhibit that takes a deeper look into the town’s history. Participants will also be encouraged to add their own story or memory to the interactive story map of Columbia.
Vayansky noted that Smoker has worked with Susquehanna

In addition, the York JCC unveiled a Holocaust Torah, number 1381, which was relocated from Temple Beth Israel to the York JCC. The book is one of the 1,564 Czech Memorial Sifre Torah and was part of a collection of treasures looted by the Nazis during World War II from desolated Jewish communities in Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia.
The Torah was acquired in 1991 from the Memorial Scrolls Trust in
National Heritage Area and Columbia Crossing in the past.
“He’s a collector with a wealth of knowledge about local history. He has loaned his objects and expertise to us for lectures and exhibits on ice harvesting, hunting and fishing,” she said, adding that in 2023, Smoker will present an exhibit on the local coal industry.
“When thinking about people who can tell locals and newcomers alike some stories they
haven’t heard about Columbia’s historic riverfront, Lynn came to mind immediately.”
There is a cost for tickets to the lecture. Seating is limited, so advance registration is suggested. To register, visit https://susqnha .org/events or call 717449-5607. Proceeds from the lecture will benefit the operations and programs of the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center.
Addressing Headlight Glare
Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.
Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so.
Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.
In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to
changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.
- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.
- Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.
- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals.
Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an
eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.
- Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not focusing on the beams.
- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses to wear in highglare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.
- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer.
- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.
These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.
