Celebrating the Albatwitch

He’sshort, covered in hair and very elusive. He’s the Albatwitch, known as a “baby Bigfoot,” and you’ll have a chance to celebrate him at the 10th annual Albatwitch Day. The event will be held at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The day will feature live music, vendors, food, guest speakers and more.

“We’ve got some great speakers coming in,” said Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival with Chris Vera. “We’ve got Dave Spinks from West Virginia, who has appeared on a number of TV shows, including ‘Terror in the Woods.’

We have Sean ‘The Forkchop’ Forker, who does a popular podcast called ‘Sasquatch Experience,’ and we have Matt Lake, who wrote ‘Weird Pennsylvania’ and other books. We also have Rissa Miller, who will be talking about the history of witches.”

Five bands will perform during the day - Dillweed, Travelers, Sound Method, Heroes 4 Ransom and Tang Moon - and both daytime and evening trolley rides through town will be offered.

“During the day, the tours will run every 45 minutes, so you can get tickets at the event,” Fisher said. Participants on the daytime tours are given apples to throw into the woods, tempting the Albatwitch to reveal himself in

Food, fun and fellowship at 5th Quarter

A football game ends after four quarters, but there will be lots of fun to be had at 5th Quarter on Friday, Oct. 20.

Three Eastern York-area churches will host 5th Quarter directly after

the Eastern York High School homecoming football game. The festivities will be open to youths in grades six through 12 and will be held at Susquehanna Grace Community Church, across Cool Creek Road from the high school at 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville.

“The goal of this event was creating a safe environment for the kids to celebrate homecoming weekend,” explained Chris Merrill, connections pastor at Wrightsville Assembly of God, which is partnering with Susquehanna Grace and Christ Church of Yorkana for 5th Quarter.

“That weekend can traditionally be a little unsafe with activities kids might get involved in. I’m a parent and a pastor, and I’m thinking about ways we can come together and provide a safe and exciting environment for kids to have fun and to bring some joy.”

in.”

“When we do the ghost trolley tour, Chris and I take flashlights along, and we look to see if any of the apples were eaten,” he said.

More than 80 vendors will be featured at Albatwitch Day as well, Vera said. “What I always think of when I’m getting vendors is, ‘A husband might be a Bigfoot guy,

but his wife may hate Bigfoot.’ I want to be sure she’s happy, too.” Vendors will sell items including handmade jewelry, Halloween décor and Bigfoot crafts.

“It’s a mixture of anything and everything,” Vera said. “It’s like an off-the-wall craft show, and everything is homemade.”

Local nonprofits will have booths set up at the festival, including Rivertown Theatre Productions, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and the Indian Steps Museum. Lancaster PA Ghostbusters will be on hand, as will Michael Mitchel from New York, who will bring his K-9 Ghostbuster, a golden retriever who dresses in a Ghostbusters outfit.

Seniors shine at Sports Day

They say age is just a number, and the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate proved that to be true during Sports Day held at the retirement community in September.

The event featured campus-wide games and activities, including ax throwing, a baseball derby, cornhole and Wii bowling.

“This is the first time we’ve planned anything like this,” said Heather Dennis, executive director of St. John’s Herr Estate, a Luthercare community located at 200 Luther Lane in Columbia. “It’s a great way

to celebrate active aging, try something new and enjoy some friendly competition.”

Amy Kenn, director of communications for Luthercare, said the event was created to highlight the skill set of the residents.

“At St. John’s Herr Estate, we have some really great - and competitiveWii bowlers,” she explained. “But we’ve learned there aren’t a lot of opportunities for them to compete locally, so Matt Landis, our community enrichment manager, thought it would be fun to host a day of games and activities, where everyone could participate in a

variety of events, have some fun and earn medals.”

She noted that Sports Day had to be rescheduled twice due to weather conditions, but when the organization was finally able to hold it, the weather was beautiful, sunny and mild.

Residents could participate in as much or as little as they wanted to, Kenn said. “Outdoors, residents could compete in a timed mile walk around campus or see how many free-throw shots they could make within a minute, how far they could hit a ball in the baseball derby event or how far they could throw a foam long-distance football in a distance throw event,” she stated. “Indoors, we, of course, had Wii bowling, along with darts, cornhole, tabletop shuffleboard, ax throwing with lightweight safety axes aimed at a target, a billiards challenge and a pitch and stick golf game.”

St. John’s staff members served as judges for the various events, keeping score and updating leaderboards throughout the day. The first-, second- and thirdplace winners in each event will be honored with awards at a ceremony this month.

Residents who chose not to compete cheered on their friends, and many who were initially hesitant to participate eventually did with encouragement from their peers.

“The residents who took part in Sports Day really seemed to enjoy themselves and spending time with their neighbors - with a lot of goodnatured teasing and friendly competition,” Kenn said.

Dennis agreed, adding, “I was so in awe of residents that came out and competed in something they had never done before. Not only did they perform well, but they were so proud. I loved watching all their smiles and laughs.”

She said the community hopes to hold another Sports Day next year, especially considering how well the first one went.

“That very day and the next morning (the residents) were coming by our offices to thank us for such an amazing event,” she remarked. “I have a feeling this will certainly not be the last time we do an event like this. The residents of this community are certainly known for their friendly competitive spirits.”

Keeping the faith

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,” explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithfulgive.org.

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest

unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word.

“(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”

Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more.

“Our goal is to bless this communi-

ty,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding that neither he nor the other board members - who include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen,

and member at large Kurt Weaverare salaried.

Flapjacks & Friends will support Marietta Community House

The Marietta Community House is a nonprofit organization with a mission of supporting the community. Now you can support that mission in return by attending Flapjacks & Friends: A Community Pancake Breakfast.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. The menu will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee and tea.

The breakfast was the brainchild of a new board member, said Joe Clark, president of the board of the Marietta Community House.

“We added board member Dave Sadler, and we were looking for ideas, mainly for community outreach,” Clark recalled. “He said, ‘Why don’t we do a pancake breakfast?’ This isn’t a big fundraiser, but it’s an outreach program.”

Several of the men on the board, including Clark and Sadler, will serve as cooks for the meal. “The ladies on the board will bus the tables and clean up,” Clark said. “The breakfast will be a good opportunity to meet our board members, put faces to the names behind the scenes and learn more about our exciting plans for

the future.”

Built in 1871 by Dr. John Huston for his nephew, the home remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In 1919, as World War I was ending, Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a wellbaby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. It now serves as a wedding and special event venue, with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year, including an annual Veterans Day celebration and a garden tour.

Proceeds from events such as a pancake breakfast are used for house maintenance, Clark said.

5th Quarter frompg

Merrill organized a 5th Quarter event last year at his church on Orange Street in Wrightsville, but he found it wasn’t convenient for kids to get there after the football game.

At the beginning of the summer, he reached out to two other local youth pastors, Levi Lentz at Susquehanna Grace and JD Dixon at Christ United Methodist Church in Yorkana, with the idea of coming together to host the event this year.

5th Quarter will feature an inflatable, a big bonfire with s’mores, pizza, games, music, giveaways and more. “We’ll have outdoor games like cornhole, Spikeball and gaga ball,” Merrill said. “We’ll also have an indoor spot set up to play video games.”

He noted that members of the King’s Knights, the Bible club at Eastern York High School, will be helping with the event as well.

“Some of the girls from the club came to me and said they wanted to do this again and asked me, ‘What are your thoughts?’” Merrill recalled. “I said, ‘Well, what are your thoughts?’ I wanted their ideas to make this event great.” King’s Knights members will be leaving the football game at halftime to set up for 5th Quarter and will be hands-on during the event, he said.

5th Quarter will end promptly at

Clock museum posts fundraiser

The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will hold its beer- and food-tasting fundraising event, Hops ‘n’ Clocks, on Friday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets include beer tasting, food sampling, a commemorative pint glass, museum entry, and a chance to win door prizes. Staff from the event’s radio sponsor, 96.1 SOX, will be on-site to carry out the duties of the master of ceremonies. Live music will be provided by Irish group Fire in the Glen. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes.

Albatwitch frompg

Paul Episcopal and Holy Trinity, will have food stands, and several local restaurants will have themed specials. Starview Brews will feature a special drink for the event, and Home Goodies & Coffee will sell an Albatwitch breakfast sandwich.

The dungeons below the Columbia Market House, at 15 S. Third St., will be open for free tours before the festival begins,

Fisher said, adding, “Come to the market, take a dungeon tour and get some breakfast before you head to the event.”

Proceeds from Albatwitch Day will benefit the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, located at 21 N. Second St. For more information or to reserve trolley tickets, visit www.albatwitchday.com or follow “Albatwitch Day” on Facebook.

Lehman’s Roadside Market

“There is always something that needs an update or a repair,” he noted.

He encourages everyone to come out for the breakfast, which will be held inside the historic site.

“The Marietta Community House serves the people of Marietta,” Clark said. “We hope people will come out and enjoy breakfast and support our mission.”

Tickets for the breakfast will be cash only and will be available at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and children under age 12.

To purchase tickets, search for “Hops ‘n’ Clocks” on www.event brite.com. There is a discount for designated drivers.

Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit National Watch & Clock Museum, dedicated to preserving horological artifacts for the next generation and fostering an appreciation for the craftsmanship of clocks and watches and the stories they tell.

He’s excited about the prospect of collaborating with other churches to

bring 5th Quarter to even more kids.

“I found some guys that really love the community and love Jesus,” he said. “They want to see this community grow and see it be infused with the joy of the Lord. An event like this is a great way to build community.”
