A Social Enterprise With Single Moms In Mind CareerLink Offers Candace Abel started making her own soaps and lotions when she was on a quest to find healthier products to use for her youngest son, who has a critical form of a blood disorder known

as thalassemia, which requires intensive medication and gene therapy for survival. “I thought, ‘If we can put better things on the table, then we can put better things on our bodies, too,’” recalled Candace. Candace’s use of goat’s milk and oils

Columbia resident Tammy Garza, who has worked for CareerLink Lancaster County for five years, will now be available to meet with local residents who are seeking jobs. “I am striving to connect with individuals that may have transportation barriers and are unable to go in to the main CareerLink office in Lancaster but still would like to take advantage of all the services that CareerLink has to offer,” Garza explained. He served on the CBSD Board and as a member and solicitor for the Columbia Municipal Authority. He is a member of the Mount Bethel Cemetery Board of Directors. He graduated from the University of Delaware and earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He has two children: Beth (Mountz) Wright of Charleston, S.C., and Jennifer Mountz of Travelers Rest, S.C. Deb is an active member of Columbia United Methodist Church and volunteers at the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. She has two children: Renee (Smith) Miller of Red Lion and Patrick Smith of Alexandria, Va. “Dave and Deb have been among the biggest supporters of Columbia Borough

schools and our students,” said Lions Club president John Gamby. “Dave coached dozens of student-athletes over the years and always emphasized the importance of hard work, sportsmanship, respect and humility. As a longtime school district employee, Deb, too, has given a lot to the students and families in town.” The parade theme is “Animal Adventures.” Participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes centered on that theme. The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will also include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, and a steam calliope as the final entry. The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers will award cash prizes to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups and individuals. John Grunden,

treasurer of the Lions Club, explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps to ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including things that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route. For the safety of spectators, parade participants are reminded not to throw candy from floats. Handing out candy along the curb line is permitted. In the case of rain, the parade will take place on Monday, Oct. 28. For more information or to register, readers may call John or Cheryl Grunden at 717-684-2714. Individuals and groups may also register for the parade at www.face book.com/ColumbiaMardiGrasParade.

to create soaps and lotions with an artistic flair caught the attention of family and friends, who asked her to make the products for them to use and then placed even more orders for things like party and wedding favors. In 2018, Candace decided to turn her hobby into something more and established Girl Crush Company as a limited liability company (LLC). Girl Crush Company is a member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild and uses organic, responsibly sourced oils and goat’s milk or honey from local suppliers. The products, which range from eyecatching unicorn swirled soaps to whimsical hand soaps with scents like heirloom tomato and oatmeal and honey, contain ethically sourced colors and fragrances. Using responsibly and ethically sourced ingredients is important to Candace, as it means no animal testing and no child labor have played a role in any of the products, which are all made in Girl Crush Company’s soap studio in Mount Joy. Now Girl Crush Company is in the process of becoming a social enterprise in order to use its profits to educate, employ, and empower at-risk single mothers in the local area. “The goal is much bigger than creating soaps,” Candace emphasized. “We want to make our footprint healthy in the ingredients that go into everything but also as a social enterprise, and what a social enterprise strives to do is use a lot of its profits for an intended good.” A portion of the profits from Girl Crush Company’s sales of products, which are available to purchase at www.girlcrushco.com and at local events, will be used to establish a mentoring program for at-risk single moms. When volunteering with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that allows trained community members to be appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in foster care, Candace could not stop thinking about the lack of support the single moms had in and out of the courtroom. After many conversations lamenting the need for more resources for single moms, someone challenged Candace to do something about it - and now she is. “What I’d like to offer these women is the assurance they are not alone,” said Candace. The company is a reflection of Candace’s heart for helping others something she is no stranger to doing. She founded Elizabethtown-based nonprofit Brittany’s Hope in memory of her daughter, Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany’s Hope focuses on aiding and facilitating the adoptions of special needs children

from around the world. Candace and her daughter-in-law, Jackie Abel, who also works for Girl Crush Company, are in the planning stages of launching a two-year pilot program where compliant single moms would be assigned a trained mentor mom. “(The mentor’s) job will really be to offer as much love as possible during the process,” explained Candace. Beyond one-on-one mentoring, she envisions a community piece with a weekly meeting time for single moms to spend time together. “People need that connection, the opportunity to build relationships and to see a model of someone living a better way even though it may not be easier,” Candace continued.

Girl Crush Company, along with other LLCs still to be determined or developed as part of the future model for the program, would also offer employment and skill set development opportunities for the single moms. A board of directors will oversee the LLCs and mentoring program, with the goal of providing a holistic approach in supporting local, at-risk single moms and practically equipping and empowering them to move forward. “I believe we need to offer a holistic approach that (each mom) had a hand in creating,” added Candace. Initial appointments with Garza may last for 30 to 40 minutes so that she can establish what type of assistance and guidance a person may need. “From there I will schedule a longer appointment where we start to really dive into creating an Individualized Employment Plan,” said Garza. “Once that has been established, we start working together on reaching that employment plan.” An employment plan may include Ready2Work certification, workshops, a four-day Career Connection program that an individual could access remotely, resume improvement, interview assistance, meeting or connecting with a recruiter, or training. Garza noted that if a person is eligible and funds are available, some individuals could qualify for up to $10,000 toward job training at a school that CareerLink partners with. The National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and displays and a prayer room will be available at that time. The theme of this year’s event, which will begin at 7 p.m., will be “Understanding Trauma: Finding Help and Comfort.” Members of the organizing committee include Cathi Myers, Gwen Didden, Flo Rebert, and speakers Freeman Chakara and Dannel Wissler. Chakara, a board-certified neuropsychologist and the head of Providence Behavioral Health, is also a professor at Lancaster Bible College. Wissler is a licensed professional counselor who works with Providence and is part of the Lancaster County Critical Incident Stress Management Team. “The focus this year is on trauma and related disorders,” said Chakara. “We thought we would address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has been in the national conversation with regard to veterans and its close cousin, acute stress disorder.” Chakara explained that he plans to discuss the weight of the issue and,

based on current research, how the problems associated with stress disorders can be managed. “(This event is) an invitation to think about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and trauma.” Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community. Myers, who has been involved with the event since its inception, said that the prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.” Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of

YWCA Lancaster has announced the six honorees for the Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon, and Dr. Tererai Trent will be the keynote speaker. On Aug. 26, Trent was honored as one of the 10 most inspirational women in the world with a life-size statue at the Statues for Equality event in New York City. Trent grew up in a cattleherding family in rural Zimbabwe. She did not have the opportunity to go to school, so she taught herself to read and write from her brother’s schoolbooks. Despite being married young and having three children by the time she was 18, she never lost sight of her dreams of

going to America for higher education. She eventually earned multiple degrees, and she has a global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education. Trent has published two books, won the 2018 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, and improved education for more than 6,000 children. The official biographies of Trent and the six honorees are available at www.ywcalancaster.org/womenofachievement. The six honorees include Timbrel Adidala, creator and owner of Lush Bazaar, Lancaster; Milzy Carrasco, director of

neighborhood engagement, City of Lancaster; Falesha Martin, owner of Turn N/Headz Hair Studio, Lancaster and founder of Breathe Again, the Sheena Martin Foundation; Fran Rodriguez, senior program officer for Lancaster County Community Foundation; Kesha Morant Williams, associate professor of communication arts and sciences, Penn State Berks; and Kate Zimmerman, executive director of Leadership Lancaster. Wyndridge Farm, a Dallastown brewery, cidery, restaurant, and event venue, has announced extended restaurant hours and the addition of an on-site apple press. The Restaurant at Wyndridge Farm, located at 885 S. Pleasant Ave., Dallastown, has set new extended hours. As of the beginning in October, patrons can dine at the restaurant at Wyndridge Farm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday brunch will include an updated selection of offerings and will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information and updated hours can be found on www.wyndridge.com and on the Wyndridge Farm Facebook page.

Wyndridge Farm has also announced that it now produces fresh cold-pressed cider with the addition of an on-site apple press. The apple press will enable Wyndridge to partner with area orchards, including Peter’s Orchards in Adams County, to produce a wider variety of apples, tailored specifically for unique hard cider needs, including Bittersweet apples, a variety that is not typically found readily available on the East Coast. Wyndridge will produce 3,000 gallons of cider per day, processing 800 bushels of apples per day using an accordion-style press and processing equipment, custom built for a more optimal production speed. The addition of the Wyndridge apple press is intended to increase the quality and flavor of cider blends

through hand-selected apple varieties which will be juiced, immediately fermented, and canned at Wyndridge Farm. Wyndridge will also provide custom press operations for cideries, wineries, distilleries, and beer makers entering the cider business in the MidAtlantic region. Tours of the apple pressing operation will be made available to groups. Future plans include making sparkling nonalcoholic cider. Wyndridge will also be pressing crabapples, peaches, and pears to make different hard cider flavor options and increase the utilization of many different local fruits. Brett Krosse, farm/cider manager, will oversee the production, logistics, and client relations of the apple pressing operation. Krosse, former Brown’s Orchard

cider manager, has 20 years of experience in agriculture. His awards include winning first place in the fresh cider category at the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Hershey. Scott Topel, head cider maker and operations manager, will work with Krosse to source the apples and produce the blends. Topel won two gold medals in Glintcap two years in a row (2016 and 2017) and has more than 20 years of cider making experience with cider education from Washington State University and Cornell University. Topel is traveling to England in October to continue his education in traditional cider making methods. For more information about Wyndridge Farm, readers may contact 717-244-9900.

Youths Attend Annual Conference

Youth Conference participants (from left) Trent McBride, Payson Elmore and Bryce Popolis, along with Trent’s father, Adam McBride, played tennis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsored its annual Youth Conference in July. Young members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake, Lancaster and York Counties, attended their church’s annual Youth Conference from July 18 to 20 on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown. A total of 93 men and women ages 14 to 18 from all seven wards and two branches of the Lancaster Stake participated. The Church stated that the purpose of the conference is for youths to build faith in Jesus Christ, strengthen their testimonies, develop their talents, make new friends, and have fun with peers who share similar beliefs and standards. Youth conferences are usually held once each year during the summer on a ward level, with each congregation holding its own conference, or on a stake level, with all congregations in a large geographical area combining. This stake youth conference was planned and carried out by the Stake Aaronic Priesthood - Young Women Committee under the direction of stake president Conrad Knudson of York. The youths were invited to assist the committee as much as possible in plan-

ning the conference. The youths first selected a Gospel theme for the conference. They could choose a Scripture, a quotation from a prophet, or another theme. The theme this year was “Survivor - Overcoming Challenges, Overcoming Fears.” The youths planned activities, such as devotionals, group meetings, learning experiences, sports activities, and service projects that were consistent with the theme. On the first night, participants attended a luau complete with a pig roasted by Philip Sherffy, a Scouting committee member. The event was held on Elizabethtown College’s Brinser Field, which was decorated with a Hawaiian theme and included a photo booth. Youths from the Harrisburg Stake joined the Lancaster Stake members for the event. The conference also included Etiquette Night, organized and led by young men’s stake president Monte Ward and his wife, Jennifer. Youths were transported to the Lancaster Stake building, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, and in their Sunday best, they first spent time learning about proper etiquette and then ate a meal served

Youths of the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prepared thank-you and getwell bags for deployed members of the military, hospitalized veterans in Lebanon, and children in the pediatric ward at York Hospital. The activity was part of an Eagle Scout project. by elders in the stake. The young men and young women practiced their new skills in proper dining etiquette. The event concluded with a dance in the cultural hall, where the youths and adults practiced their dance etiquette skills. Another special activity was a three-part Eagle Scout service project organized by Derek Brown from Troop 184 of the Shrewsbury Ward. Prior to the conference, Derek placed boxes in the foyers of the churches in the stake for member donations of useful items to give to various groups in need and to help the Eagle Scout candidate complete his goal. At the conference, attendees sorted the contributions and decorated and filled bags with items that would then be donated to Veterans Affairs for deployed members of the military and those in the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lebanon, as well as the pediatric ward at York Hospital. Deployed individuals received beverage packets, while men and women at the VA Hospital received puzzle books and small hygiene items, including deodorant, body wash, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Patients at York Hospital received

toys and games, such as puzzles, stuffed animals, craft kits, coloring books and crayons. Each evening of the Youth Conference ended with a devotional within groups divided into tribes, and each morning started with a devotional given by invited members from the Stake. The final morning of the Youth Conference included workshops on special subject matters chosen by the youths. Youths could learn more about patriarchal blessings, improve upon social skills when interacting with other young people, and attend “Survival 101” to learn the basic skills needed when one leaves home. The Youth Conference ended with a special testimony meeting conducted by president Allen Zerbe of the stake presidency. Upon their return from the Youth Conference, many of the young men and women reported to their congregations the following Sunday. Members of the bishopric or stake presidency were invited to attend as much of the conference as possible. Leaders of the church’s groups for young men and young women were encouraged to attend the entire conference.

Steve Thurston was riding the subway in Philadelphia when he saw something suspicious. At first, he thought that he was observing a father with his troublesome teenage daughter, but the more he paid attention, the more he could tell his initial assumption was incorrect. The pair left the train heading in one direction, and Steve headed in another. The incident stuck with him, however, and he told his wife, Amy, about it when he arrived home later that day. They agreed that Steve had probably witnessed an incident of human trafficking. “He realized he missed an opportunity (to intervene),” Amy said. At the time, the Thurstons were living in King of Prussia. Steve had a marketing and advertising background. Amy had worked in higher education for 15 years, and she had supported girls who had been raped or abused. The couple decided that together, they could make an impact on preventing human trafficking, particularly by identifying potential victims’ vulnerabilities and

bolstering their confidence. The Thurstons moved to Lancaster because of the area’s high rate of human trafficking. They established Hope. Inspire. Love. in January 2017 in order to eradicate human trafficking and sexual exploitation. “Freedom is our legacy” is the organization’s motto. Amy has been busy speaking to teenagers aging out of foster care, high school students, parenting groups, and others in order to raise awareness about human trafficking and how young people can be tricked into it. “Teaching children they have a voice is huge,” Amy said. “The more you educate and make (transparency) a part of everyday life, the less they feel they have to keep things secret.” Recently, Amy expanded her scope to include law enforcement at the request of a police chief who said that he did not want his staff to become numb to prostitution. Amy explained that often sex workers wind up in that career because they were trafficked. Hope. Inspire. Love. also works alongside North Star Initiative and other intervention-effort operations to help rescue survivors and connect them with community groups and faith-based organizations that will help them recover. The Thurstons have participated in the A21 Walk for Freedom in Harrisburg for the past three years. They are launching Lancaster’s first Walk for Freedom on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting from Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and they hope to start an-

Walk for Freedom is a global fundraising and awareness event started by A21, an international nonprofit organization that fights modern-day slavery. The walks look similar, no matter where they are held: Participants dressed in black and holding signs walk single file through the host city, distributing flyers containing information about human trafficking and ways to make change possible. Registration on Oct. 19 will open at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9:30 a.m. The route of a little under 2 miles will take participants around downtown Lancaster. Individuals who are unable to complete that distance may opt instead to stay on-site at the park and distribute materials to

passersby. Everyone with smartphones will be invited to listen to a podcast by Christine Caine that will relate how lives are saved because of the Walk for Freedom. There is no cost to participate, but donations for A21 will be accepted. Hope. Inspire. Love. will have a booth at the park where individuals may learn how they can get involved in local efforts to stop human trafficking and assist survivors. “We want to hear more people reporting (trafficking) and taking a stand so this doesn’t happen to our kids, our neighbors,” Amy said. To learn more about Hope. Inspire. Love. and the Walk for Freedom, readers may visit www.hopeinspirelove.org or email amy@hopeinspirelove.org.
