ohn Meshey has been involved in the Columbia community for more than 45 years, so it’s fitting that he’s the grand marshal of the 2023 Columbia Mardi Gras Halloween Parade. The parade will step off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26. John, a 1975 graduate of Columbia High School, recalled that he first became involved in the community when he entered a fundraiser to win a prize through the Jaycees when he was 21 years old. “I won one of the prizes, but instead of giving me the prize, they

Great things happen when we work together. That’s the message behind Fight Hunger Fall Fest, a collaboration between Wrightsville Presbyterian Church and Wrightsville for All. The event will be held at the

church, 205 N. Second St., Wrightsville, on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’ll be blocking off Second Street between Locust and Walnut, and we’ll have lot of activities for the whole family,” said the Rev. Jesse North. See Fall Fest pg 4

paid my membership dues,” he noted. It was the first of many commitments John has made to Columbia over the decades. He’s been a member of the Columbia Lions Club for 10 years and currently serves as service chair. He’s also active with the Sunsnappers, Columbia Park Rangers and the Columbia Civil Service Commission, among other organizations. The father of two children and three grandchildren said giving back to his community has always been important to him. “Having children participate in different sporting events, I ended up coaching or selling concessions,” he said. “I have always wanted to be a part of all the community events happening Columbia. People appreciate it, and it’s nice when somebody comes up and says, ‘Thank you for doing this.’”

The Fight Hunger Fall Fest will feature lots of fun for the whole family.

Providing support for pregnancy loss Tammy and John Meshey

John will be joined in the parade by his wife, Tammy. He noted that he began participating in the parade as a child, recalling how he and some friends dressed up as Laurel and Hardy. His wife also participated in her youth, with her whole family creating a float annually based on the parade’s theme. This year’s parade has a theme of “Wide World of Sports” and will feature more than 50 units in five divisions. “We have a lot of local groups participating, like the Scouts and lots of school groups,”

John said. “We’ll have bands and floats.” Judges will circulate throughout the parade, reviewing entries to award cash prizes. “We have them walk through the parade so that way the spectators can see the groups performing anywhere along the parade route, not just at a judges’ stand at the end,” he explained. The parade is a true community event, he noted, drawing not only a large number of participants but a large crowd of spectactors as well.

The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an in-person perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St.,

Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized speakers on this subject matter is unique.”

Highlights of the “Journey of a Lifetime” conference will include morning keynote speaker Dr. Robert Silver of University of Utah, who has spent more than 20 years researching stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Afternoon sessions and speakers will feature a keynote address by Joanna Cole of CHOP, who has developed perinatal palliative and bereavement care programs. “The first half of the day will focus on the medical realm, and the second half will concentrate of the psychosocial realm,” Wu explained. A variety of panels will be featured, led by experts in the field. The conference is open to anyone who provides care or is affected by pregnancy loss, she noted, adding that it also provides continuing education credit for healthcare workers. “Part of Share of Lancaster’s mission is education and to bring awareness,” Wu said. “October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness

Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process. According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities. Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Hazardous Waste Facility to

drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries. For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.Safe BatteryDisposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips. Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion.

“We want people to know they aren’t alone,” said Wu. “A lot of times, people will say, ‘Until I started talking about it, I didn’t realize other people had experienced this as well.’” Share will host the Share of Lancaster Walk 2023 the day after the conference, Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. It will run from 5 to 7 p.m. “This is our annual remembrance event,” Wu said. “It’s a memorial service, but it’s not sad. It’s a way to remember our babies and spend time together. We have readings of writings submitted by Share members. We show a video presentation, and we call out every baby’s name. We also light candles near dusk, and that will light up the stadium.” Registration is free for the walk. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 20. Wrightsville Presbyterian has held a Fall Fest in the past, but this year promises to be bigger and better than ever, thanks to the partnership with Wrightsville for All, North said. Wrightsville for All is a community group founded by Alicia Ferrari in 2020 with a mission of connecting people in positive ways throughout the area. She was soon joined by Sara Barrett, and the women have organized a variety of community efforts, including donation drives for local nonprofits. North saw Wrightsville for All’s Facebook page and reached out about a potential partnership.

“We are very clear that we are inclusive; no matter what walk of life you come from, we want to know you,” Ferrari stated. “You are our neighbor.” That mission fit perfectly with North’s vision for the church, so North offered his space as a place for Wrightsville for All to hold community events. Exciting things have been happening at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, North noted. In September, he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in a service that drew a large crowd. “It was a packed house,” recalled Barrett. “The energy in the room was really palpable. The message of

the service was ‘Come as you are,’ and inclusion, and reaching out to everyone and letting them know they have a place here. They are welcome.” The Fall Fest is a perfect example of North’s desire to create unity, he said, noting that the event brings together his church, Wrightsville for All and several other local churches. “It’s important to highlight that the Methodist church, the Lutheran church, the Presbyterian church and Wrightsville for All are all trying to do stuff that benefits the community,” North said. “We want to get everybody together to have a great day.”

The new, inclusive playground equipment will replace play structures that are more than 22 years old. The Janson Foundation received $116,500 to complete the project and will match the state’s funds with $116,500, for a total community investment of $233,000. Funding for the grant comes from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program’s Environmental Stewardship Fund. A check presentation took place on Sept. 21.
