When Maria Enriquez considers a show to direct, she asks herself the same question: Why this show now? The director of “Agnes of God,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage later this month, said she found the play to be as relevant today as it was when it was written more than 40 years ago.
“This is a show that prompts the audience to ask questions about faith versus reason,” Enriquez stated. “These are questions like, ‘Is there a God? Do I believe?’ These questions are relevant today. As a society, we’re seeing a loss of faith, a loss of organized religion. This show gives audiences the opportunity to examine the driving forces behind that.”

The75th annual Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, with a theme of “Back to the ’90s.” Parade participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes based on the theme.
“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in recent years,” said John Grunden, treasurer of the Columbia Lions Club. “We already have 10 more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”
The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and the Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. It will form at 10th and Manor streets before proceeding along a 1.5-mile route that includes sections of Manor, South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets.
The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will also include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. The Marine Corps
League of Lancaster County will collect toys and donations for the Toys for Tots program along the route, and people are invited to bring a toy to donate to this project.
Grunden noted that cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories and that the judges will roam the parade route to observe entries throughout the parade rather than only seeing a specific performance at a grandstand. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route.
Jetty Gerfin will serve as grand marshal and will ride in a horse-drawn carriage at the front of the parade along with her son, Fred Gerfin.
“Jetty is someone who is always looking for ways to make life a little easier for friends, loved ones and anyone she meets,” said Paul Resch, president of the Columbia Lions Club. “She enjoys meeting new people, getting to know them personally and helping in any way she can. On any given day, you’ll find her giving rides to friends who have appointments or picking up anyone who needs a ride to church.”

Staying
You walk your dog, walk for exercise, or go for a run, and most of the time you probably do not give much thought to your safety. Being aware of threats that could invade your routine is the first step toward increasing your personal security.
According to Jerry Harper, president of Community Safety & Security Consultants (CCSC) of Lititz, raising your safety level begins with raising your awareness. “The most important thing I tell people is to always be aware of their surroundings,” said Harper, who recommends taking a situational safety class to learn what concerning behaviors look like. “Be aware of vehicles (that are) parked nearby. Is there anyone near them? What are

A lifelong Columbia resident, Jetty has volunteered with numerous organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the former Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and St. James Lutheran Church, where she has served on the church council, as a member of the choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She has also volunteered with the Thunder on the River car
(those people) doing?” Harper encourages people to trust their instincts. “If you feel uneasy, cross the street,” he said. “Walk near a residence or where you see other people so there are other witnesses involved.”
Of course, being aware also means being alert. “Make sure you’re not distracted,” said Harper. “People like to crank up the music, and they wear earbuds, so they don’t hear a vehicle coming up behind them (or) they don’t hear the stones moving on the walkway or highway when someone is running up behind them or from behind a bush,” he explained. “I tell people, ‘Keep one earbud out or keep your volume down so you have some hearing.’”
Another recommendation from Harper is to always carry pepper
show for many years. Jetty was married to the late Fred “Itz” Gerfin for 37 years. She has two children, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

spray. “Have it clipped to your waist in case you’re in a situation where you need to defend yourself and create separation (between you and a threat),” said Harper, who recommends learning to use the spray properly. “We teach people to aim starting at the chest and (moving) upward,” said Harper, who noted aiming only for the eyes will not work if the assailant tries to duck. “Starting out at the chest and zigzagging upward will maximize the effectiveness due to the vapors of the pepper spray rising upward,” he said.
Some things that can help keep you safer should be done before you even think of leaving your home. Steps such as varying the time that you walk or run and changing up your route on a regular basis are simple ways to decrease your risk.
“Definitely change your routes and your times if necessary,” said Harper. “(Predators) watch for a pattern
so they can plan on that behavior.” Harper recommended altering driving routes for the same reason.
Thanks to technology, there are now phone applications that can alert those closest to you using a key word or PIN. Some apps will alert chosen individuals to your GPS location or record sound or video for an extended amount of time. “If something would happen, (the app) will start notifying the people who are important to you so they can start sharing that information with authorities,” Harper said.
Harper also advises taking a basic self-defense course. “If you are a victim of an attack, it’s nice to have options to escape a certain kind of hold or grab,” he said. “The basics of certain tactics do work to create separation.”

East Region for Penn State Health.
The medical center is located near the intersection of State Road and Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield Township.
The new hospital is an acute care facility, and it will offer both inpatient and outpatient care from its six-story, 341,000-square-foot location that features 132 private patient beds. “Lancaster Medical Center will have inpatient services, including a cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, general surgery, labor and delivery, and complete medical and surgical capabilities,” Frank noted. “It will offer outpatient services such as an Emergency Department, imaging services and physician offices.”
Unique features at the facility include a “hybrid operating room,” Frank said, explaining that this stateof-the-art design is an advanced procedural space that includes a traditional operating room (OR) and medical imaging devices. “Having advanced imaging and surgical technologies available in the same space makes it easier on the patient,” he remarked. “Our teams will be able to give them a single visit to the hybrid OR as opposed to multiple procedures. It allows us to do more advanced interventions in the operating room.”
While Frank emphasized that the most important feature of Lancaster Medical Center is its team of caregivers, he detailed design features that reflect the organization’s commitment to a healthy work environment. Departments and units are designed to promote staff collaboration and efficient workflow that reduces steps and provides quick access to supplies when minutes matter, he said. “A state-of-the-art café with indoor and outdoor seat-
ing provides healthy dining in a soothing atmosphere,” Frank shared. “Meditation areas, abundant windows with panoramic views, art and décor designs and the walking trail further promote wellbeing for staff and visitors.”
Construction on the hospital began in 2020. “Being able to design a hospital from scratch gives you many opportunities to incorporate design and technology into an exceptional patient experience,” Frank said. “We’ve planned so we are able to provide state-of-the-art technology for the community needs now and in the future as our community grows. We’ve engaged our physician partners in the technology choices just as our nurses are engaged in designing our care. And we’ve added expanded consumer technologies like in-room digital patient education to not only provide the highest level of quality care, but also easy accessibility, comfort and convenience.”
Projected population growth was an important factor in choosing the site of the new medical center, he said. “We know that Lancaster County is growing, and along with population growth will come the need for more health care services,” he commented. “This location provides a comfortable and convenient access to Penn State Health care, especially for an aging population. It allows us to anticipate the city’s outgrowth and plan for our community of 10 years from now. And not just in age, but in many other measures of diversity. Understanding the changing face of our community has been a key driver for our decisions from staffing, to care design to locations.”

Agnes
“Agnes of God” is a three-woman show. The cast features Lydia Alkinburgh as Agnes; Susan Kresge as Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior; and Nelly Torres as Dr. Martha Livingstone. It tells the story of Agnes, a young nun, who has given birth but claims it was an immaculate conception. “Dr. Livingstone is a psychiatrist trying to get to the bottom of this mystery,” said Enriquez.
Alkinburgh described her character as innocent and sheltered. “She’s very young - just 21 - and she’s very child-like,” she noted. “She doesn’t know much about the world.”
Kresge said her character is torn between wanting to know the truth of what happened and struggling with that truth. She’s also a lonely person. “She has some emptiness in her life, and Agnes fills some of those holes,” Kresge noted.
As a doctor, Torres’ character struggles with her faith. “She relies on logic,” Torres stated. “In her mind, everything can be explained by reason. … She has walls up and tries to mask her vulnerability and her own struggle with faith.”
For this show, Enriquez cast two understudies - Natalie Beckman for Dr. Livingstone and Tac Tacelosky for Miriam Ruth. Tacelosky will perform the role at the matinee performance on Sunday, Oct. 23.
Enriquez explained that using understudies was not only a necessity in the age of COVID uncertainty but also a deliberate choice. “This show offers these really plum roles for actresses, so I wanted to bring in even more women to the production,” she said.
The show has provided a unique rehearsal experience, said Erin Vago, who is the stage manager.
“There’s something valuable about it being all women,” she noted.
Toys For Tots To Join Parade
Toys for Tots - Lancaster County will participate in the Columbia Halloween Parade on Thursday, Oct. 27. Members of the community are encouraged to participate in the Stuff the Truck Drive by donating new, unwrapped toys during the parade.
Toys for Tots, a 75-year-old national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, provides gifts to children in need during each Christmas season. Lancaster County Toys for Tots helped over 17,000 children last Christmas. The toys and donations raised in Lancaster County stay in the county.
If a child is in need this holiday season, visit http://lancaster -pa.toysfortots.org to register him or her to receive gifts.
“There’s the ability to be that certain level of vulnerable that this show needs.”
Tacelosky emphasized that the show may leave audiences with a lot to think about. “I envision car rides home with lots of questions and people wanting to hash things out,” she said.
“Agnes of God” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 21 and 28; Saturdays, Oct. 22 and 29; and Thursday, Oct. 27. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 23 and 30. Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta. For more information, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held
Pappus House recently broke ground on its new, larger home located in Thomasville. The new home will include eight private bedrooms, expanding the organization’s capacity and mission of compassionate end-of-life services. Pappus House currently operates a threebedroom end-of-life home on Cherry Street in York Township.
Pappus House has raised more than $3 million through a capital campaign led by co-chairs Liz Shorb and Alexandra “Alex” Chiaruttini and honorary chairs John and Maria Polli. The capital campaign funds supported the purchase of the nine-acre property at 66 Big Mount Road in Thomasville, as well as architectural plans to redesign the facility, which was previously the York County SPCA. The campaign will continue to support the renovation and construction of the new eight-bedroom end-of-life
home, coordinated by Kinsley Construction, as well as furnishing and sustaining the home.
Every aspect of the innovative new home has been designed to help dying individuals live as fully as possible, surrounded by the comforts of home, until their last breath.
Plans include eight large, private resident bedrooms with ample space for visiting family and even pets as well as private patios outside each bedroom to enable families to gather outside. Bedrooms will have double doors to access the patio.
There will be private bathrooms for each bedroom, roll-in shower rooms to enable all residents to enjoy a full shower in lieu of sponge baths, a large kitchen and dining area for families and visitors to gather, administrative areas for staff and volunteers, ample storage space, a spiritual sanctuary for prayer and quiet
reflection, wide hallways for easy accessibility, a children’s playroom and a family respite area with a featured area for pets.
All modifications will meet the requirements of a Pennsylvania licensed personal care home and ADA compliance.
Future additions to the new home will include tranquil landscaping with walking paths, reflection ponds and native gardens to attract butterflies.
Pappus House is dedicated exclusively to the needs of people with a terminal illness who are unable or do not wish to die in their own home. Specially trained staff and volunteers become extended family, providing continuous care, nurturing companionship, medication administration, home-cooked meals and personal hygiene in careful coordination with the family’s chosen hospice provider. Pappus House works collaboratively with all hospice and health providers.
With purposeful intent to prove community need, Pappus House began its mission in December 2017 in a modest three-bedroom home. As many families seek this care for their loved ones, the current home consistently operates at full capacity and must turn away over 50% of referrals because beds are full.
More information and a link to make a donation can be found at www.pappushouse.org and on the Pappus House Facebook page.
Church To Host Chuck Wagon Gang
The Chuck Wagon Gang will present a concert at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, on Friday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. There is a set admission fee.
The group formed in 1935, featuring farmer D.P. Carter along with his son, Ernest, and daughters, Lola and Effie. It began as a way to spread the Word while also raising money for medicine for Effie, who had pneumonia. The group began singing on local radio in Lubbock, Texas, that year. As it grew in popularity, the Chuck Wagon Gang started recording for the American Record Corporation in 1936 before the group’s contract and master recordings were purchased by Columbia Records.
Over the years, the band has sold
millions of records and songbooks and has experienced numerous personnel changes while retaining ties to the original quartet. Current owner, manager, and alto singer Shaye Smith is the granddaughter of original alto Anna “Effie” Carter and of Howard Gordon, who played electric and acoustic guitar for the Chuck Wagon Gang in the 1950s and ’60s. The quartet still performs with accompaniment from only one guitar,
