Columbia Holds Off Octorara, 52-49 by Eric Pyles
The Tide wrapped up their three game losing streak last week when they narrowly pulled out a home victory against Octorara. Columbia, coming off a 70-22 loss to Ephrata, rolled out a 52-49 nail biter to move to 3-5 on the year. This homecoming wins keeps their playoff hopes alive in section three. They just couldn’t seem to get anything going a few weeks ago, giving up 35 points in the second quarter alone. Then, too little too late as they ended up coming alive in the final quarter to score 16 points. The dynamic duo of Ryan Redding
and Matt McCleary were held in check by Ephrata as the offense as a whole only produced 215 yards. Redding caught four passes for 44 yards. McCleary threw for only 149 yards, his lowest total on the season but did find Michael Poole for a touchdown. Justin Elliot and Matt Gamber also found the end zone for the Tide as they both scampered for scores. The only bright spots in a rough night for the Tide. But they had something to celebrate homecoming weekend, Friday, Oct. 11. Starting it off the right way in the gridiron. Columbia ended the first quarter last Friday down eight points but quickly found their groove in the

Going into the half, Columbia was still down two points as section three foe Octorara continued to trade shots. Redding finally got into the action when he scored off a 43 yard pass from best friend, McCleary. Tucker caught another strike and McCleary decided to take one himself as he scampered one yard to cap the victory. EY Field Hockey Opens Playoffs Against Eagles by Eric Pyles
The kick off to Eastern York’s field hockey postseason is giving the Lady Golden Knights a case of Déjà vu. Eastern worked through the regular season with a 14-3 overall mark and an 11-2 league record, good enough to earn the sixth seed in the YAIAA tournament. Unfortunately, that dropped the Lady Golden Knights into the YAIAA tournament opposite the team responsible for two of the three losses, Bermudian Springs. The Lady Eagles made it three in a row and ended Eastern’s county title hopes courtesy of a 2-0 final. Kelsey Felix kept her squad close with a seven save effort but goals from Alyssa Black and Skylar West were too much. The Lady Golden Knights now turn their attention to the District 3-1A tournament that opens October 23rd. The postseason Déjà vu is on track to continue with Eastern currently slated to battle Littlestown who they defeated 1-0 back on September 5th. “The Delone Catholic win was a nice way to finish the regular season and keep things moving in a positive direction,” said head coach Steph Felix of her squad’s 8-0 shelling of Delone on the 10th. Eastern dominated possession leading to 26 shots and the eight goals. Morgan Arnold paced the attack with three goals and one assist but she received plenty of backup from Addy Malone and Lily Campbell who netted two scores each. Mia Shrom accounted for the final score while Kelsey Felix needed just two saves to earn the shutout. The Lady Golden Knights posted another lopsided win one day earlier, topping Fairfield by a 5-0 count. Malone and Arnold did the heavy lifting, combining for all five goals while Campbell picked up an assist on Arnold’s second score that gave Eastern a 4-0 lead just before intermission. Malone enjoyed a hat trick plus two assists while Kelsey Felix had three saves to earn the win. Eastern York entered that YAIAA quarterfinal tilt opposite Bermudian riding a five-game winning streak, adding victories over Susquehanna Township, York Suburban and Gettysburg over the first seven says of October. post season crunch time with the regular season winding down and playoffs revving up. So, whether your team is comfortably in the postseason or in the pack of jostling teams just looking to get in, you never want your team to stumble down the stretch. Unfortunately, that is what happened to the Eastern York girls’ volleyball team with losses to West York and Kennard-Dale dropping the Lady Golden Knights to 9-8 overall. That slots Eastern 17th in the most current District 3-3A power rankings or one spot outside the 3A playoff field with just one regular season match remaining. The October 15th loss to KD was a painful one, not only because of the postseason implications but because of how close the Lady Golden Knights came to matching their September 19th win over the Lady Rams. Eastern, behind Sarah Moore’s 21 dig, 19 kill, four ace, two block and one assist game, opened their final home contest with a 25-20 victory. That would serve as the high mark for the Lady

Golden Knights as Kennard-Dale claimed the next three matches by a total of eight points. Eastern York pushed two of those three to overtime but fell 26-24 and 28-26 with a 25-21 loss in between. AJ Waltemyer topped Moore with a team high 22 digs while adding 15 kills and two aces. Madison Shimmel added three aces, four digs and one kill to her team high 18 assists which was nearly matched by Elise Sprenkle’s 16 assists. Alyssa Noll chipped in with 17 digs, two kills and one ace. Eastern’s 3-0 loss to West York went down on October 10th or nearly a month after their first loss to the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Golden Knights also suffered a 3-0 loss to York Suburban on the 3rd with wins over Red Land on October 7th and York High on the 8th coming before the West York setback. CROSS COUNTRY With one trip to Gettysburg the Eastern York cross county team crossed the bridge from regular sea-
son to postseason. The Golden Knights competed in the YAIAA Championship meet where Tyrel Emig posted the top boy’s finish while Fiona Valore took that honor for the girl’s team. Emig finished his 3.1 miles in 18:44.80 to finish 68th while Valore crossed the finish line at 24:25.50 and in 72nd. Five other boys broke the 20minute barrier starting with Tyler Druck who finished 79th with a time of 19:01.80. The remaining four runners all finished within 20-seconds of Druck starting with Taylor Cappeluti (81st, 19:02.10) Anthony Roselli (84th, 19:08.40), Hailu Barrow (19:17.20) and Chase Curry who closed out the top 90 with a time of 19:19.40. Abigail Ferry ran second for Eastern, taking 86th with a time of 25:47.80. Kayley Druck was the last Eastern runner to crack the top 100, doing so with a time of 28:37.60 which was good for 99th place. Emma Parvis (103rd - 29:17.10), Savannah Conley (107th - 30:23.50) and Nelmaris Deliz (111st - 39:27.60) rounded out Eastern York’s runners. GOLF Eastern York’s golf season officially came to a close on October 4th with Dyson Renn posting a first round 98 in the District 3-3A Championship at Briarwood East. Renn was unable to find his groove during his district round, one week after posting an 84 during the YAIAA Championships on the same course. FOOTBALL In the world of football, division games tend to be the most difficult with rivalries upping the stakes and familiarity ramping up the difficultly. With the added difficulty it is no surprise then that Eastern York finds themselves 1-4 in YAIAA Division II action with one division game remaining. Eastern’s 13-0 win over West York on October 4th broke up a three-game slide but the Golden Knights were tripped up one week later thanks to a 42-20 setback at the hands of Susquehannock. The Warriors, behind a monster game from Daniel Clapp, pulled away from Eastern over the second half of their October 11th clash to collect the comfortable win. The Golden Knights, behind the Trevor Seitz led passing game, were able to hang around over the opening 24 minutes, entering

intermission down 21-20, but Eastern was unable to keep pace with the Warriors during their 21-point third quarter explosion. While Susquehannock, as a team, gets the credit for that third quarter explosion it was really Clapp that was responsible. The senior back capped his 186-yard night with three visits to paydirt during the pivotal frame, bringing his game total to a whopping five and securing the win for the visiting Warriors. Seitz led the passing attack with 219 yards and three scores while also tallying the most rushing yards for Eastern with 38. Bryce Currier was the favorite target on the night, snagging eight balls for 110 yards and two of Seitz’s three scores. Kaleb Corwell accounted for Seitz’s remaining TD pass, picking up the 15-yard score in the opening frame and giving the Golden Knights a short-lived lead at
14-8. Jake Crumling was the only other Eastern player to catch a Seitz pass, hauling in six of them for 25 yards. GIRLS’ SOCCER A five-game winning streak sent the field hockey team into the postseason riding high but the same could not be said for the girls’ soccer team who also closed out their regular season on a five-game run, leaving them with a 10-8 mark but still outside the 10-team District 32A field by one spot. “That is exciting and what we will build on for next year,” said head coach Christina Crumling. “We finally figured out how to put it all together. We knew we had a very talented team, but the lack of overall experience compared to other teams made a difference early on.” Early season struggles were See Eastern pg 6

Eastern from pg 5 nowhere to be found in a 3-0 season ending win over Central Dauphin East on October 14th. Cassidy Shetter, Abigail Henise and Hanna Sellers all earned unassisted second half scores while Savannah Yingst made seven saves to pick up her eighth shutout of the season. Eastern was just as dominate in their October 10th win over KennardDale, tallying 25 shots, but KD broke up the shutout bid with an early score by Cloe Thoericht. Yingst settled down after allowing that goal, finishing the win with eight saves. Sophia Hoff knotted the game with her first score then added a second half insurance goal for good measure. In between Shetter lit the lamp to put Eastern York in front with 99 seconds remaining in the opening half. The rest of the season ending five game run was put together with on field wins over York Suburban on the 3rd and Big Spring on the 7th. Add in an Oley Valley forfeit win on the 5th and you get five in a row and wins in seven of the last 10 games for the Lady Golden Knights. BOYS’ SOCCER Year one of the boys’ soccer rebuild is in the books with a 2-15-1 mark punctuating the season. “This year didn’t go as expected,” said first year head coach JJ Heiland, “but the memories and the bonds created during our 2019 season will last forever. The coaching staff was blessed by the players we had this year being led by seniors Gavin Donnelley and Logan Kessler,” he added. “We’re excited for the future and looking forward to see the team grow through our rebuilding process.” The season closed with the Golden Knights dropping seven straight while being outscored 46-1. Nearly a quarter of that damage came in one loss when Eastern fell to Red Land 11-0 on the 9th. Ethan Nikolaus (eight saves) and Jake Myers (three saves) split time in goal. The season came to a close one day later with a 3-0 loss to Kennard-Dale. Nikolaus went solo between the pipes and finished with 10 saves. October 3rd saw the Golden Knights fall to York Suburban 7-0 while West York blanked Eastern by a 6-0 count on the 8th. In between was a 9-1 loss to York Catholic on the 5th. Jacob McCarthy scored the lone goal in that stretch off a second half penalty kick.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School and has acted in numerous SSC performances. This will be his first time directing an SSC production. Rachel Snyder of Mount Joy will portray 17-year-old orphan Abigail Williams, who works as a live-in housekeeper for John and Elizabeth Proctor until she is kicked out by Elizabeth. “(Abigail) twists the truth so much and makes the whole town believe her lies,” Snyder said. “The tension throughout the show builds for itself,” noted Tom Sharpes of Lancaster, who will portray John. “You really identify with these characters and want them to make the right decisions. The writing is brilliant.” Madeline Ruth Pickens, who will play Elizabeth, agreed and described her character as having many layers. “It’s just so intricate. Her thought life is such a battle and trying to communicate that to the audience is difficult. I want to do that justice.” “(‘The Crucible’) is one of those shows that is always relevant, and there are still truths that can be found in it today,” added Pickens. Additional cast members include Jordan Ross Weinhold, Duane Hespell, Sharon Boyer, Steve Hassinger, Jack Hartman, Bill Ryan, David Kloser, Kelly Warren, Shekinah Qalo, Lydia Alkinburgh, Grayson Marz, Brian Noffke, Jim Johnson, Isabella Astuto, Ashley Gage, Charis Alkinburgh, and Sophie Eckman.

Giant Food Stores will celebrate the grand openings of its three newest central Pennsylvania stores this November. Its new Lebanon store, located at 1750 Quentin Road, will open on Friday, Nov. 1, at 8 a.m., and its stores at 3985 Columbia Ave., Columbia, and 35 Friendly Drive, Quarryville, will open one week later on Friday, Nov. 8 at 8 a.m. Giant entered into an agreement to acquire the three locations from Musser’s Markets in August. “We look forward to opening the doors to our three newest stores, which will be updated with plenty of Giants’s fresh ideas and amenities, while also keeping customer favorites like Musser’s bakery cookies, assorted pork sausages, and signature
chicken salad,” said Nicholas Bertram, president, Giant Food Stores. “We know how important these stores are to their local communities, and it’s our privilege to be able to serve our new neighbors.” Each store will offer expanded hours of operation from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Giant will employ more than 300 full- and part-time associates across the three stores, including approximately 220 from Musser’s Markets. Vital Tree Yoga will host a yoga and beer event at Twisted Bine Beer Co., 93 E. Main St., Mount Joy, to support the Veterans Yoga Project (VYP). The fundraiser will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon, and yoga tickets are available for a set fee, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Veterans Yoga Project. The Veterans Yoga Project is a global nonprofit organization that provides yoga and mindful resilience training to yoga teachers and outreach classes to veterans, families, and communities. Beverages can be purchased separately. Twisted Bine will donate 10% of beverage purchases to VYP with a valid yoga ticket. Registration and tickets are available at www.vitaltree vinyasa.com. Space is limited, and registration is required. Donations for VYP will also be accepted at Twisted Bine Beer Co. and Vital Tree Yoga, 137 W. Mar-
ket St., Marietta. Several nonprofits including the Veterans Yoga Project and the Baptiste Foundation are actively pursuing military yoga programs. Vital Tree Yoga is owned by Laurie Rinard, a certified Baptiste Yoga leader. In 2019, Rinard trained with Dan Nevins and the Baptiste Foundation to teach Baptiste Yoga to veterans and first responders. In Baptiste Yoga, participants use three practices: asana (physical practice), meditation, and inquiry. Members of the military, veteran, or first response community who would like to host free yoga classes may contact Vital Tree Yoga through its website at www.vital treevinyasa.com. Vital Tree Yoga also offers a 20% military and first response discount on its monthly unlimited yoga package.
Laurie Rinard (left) and Sgt. Michael Brown invite community members to participate in a yoga and beer event that will raise funds for the Veterans Yoga Project. The fundraiser will be held on Nov. 10 at Twisted Bine Beer Co. in Mount Joy.

CPBGH Announces New Partnership The Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) has entered into a partnership with AblePay Health to offer its members a unique program for diffusing the costs of health care. AblePay Health, located in Bethlehem, is a health care consumer company that assists its members with discounts (up to 13%) and flexible payment terms on deductible and coinsurance expenses. AblePay has agreements with Penn Medicine-Lancaster General Health (LGH), the St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN), Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), and Main Line Health (MLH) that allows it to provide convenient payment options for its members. The CPBGH was originally founded in 1984 as the Lancaster County Business Group on Health by a group of employers concerned about the cost and quality of health care benefits. In 2017, the board of directors voted to expand the group’s reach and change its name to the Central Penn Business Group on Health. The group now focuses on serving employers based in Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. For more information, readers may visit www.cpbgh.org.
