On Thursday, Nov. 7, North Star Initiative will host a Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. North Star Initiative began operating The Harbor, Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, in 2017. “The common remark I get from people is, ‘Trafficking is really happening here in Lancaster County?’ And it is,” shared Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative director of development. “It’s important to become aware of what’s going on and to know the facts so you can share them with other people.” Esbenshade said that the Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. will help people to understand more about the issue and how they can support the ministry of

North Star Initiative. Attendees will hear stories from survivors of trafficking and learn about the organization’s vision for the coming year. That vision is covered in the acronym R.I.S.E.: Renovating existing structures, Innovating through programming, Sustainability through transitional living, and remaining Established in Christ for all of the restorative services offered. The vision is also reflective of the declaration in Scripture from Micah 7:8: “Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy! Though I fall, I will rise; though I sit in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.” The Harbor is designed to provide a safe haven for women ages 18 to 40 who are survivors of sex trafficking. It has capacity for up to 10 residents at a time. Esbenshade explained that The Harbor Restoration Program aims to provide psychological, physical, See North Star pg 3

Kreutz Creek Library is one of 10 libraries nationwide to receive a 2019 Digital Equipment Grant of $1,000 from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The grant provides libraries in need with funds to purchase digital equipment such as video cameras, filming equipment, and electronic tablets for teenagers to use at the library. The grant is made possible through a sponsorship from The Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Kreutz Creek’s new equipment is being used by teenagers to make YouTube videos at the library, according to library services coordinator Jennifer Johnson. Johnson said the teenagers chose to create a video book trailer of Jen Wang’s graphic fairytale “The Prince and the Dressmaker.” It is one of 25 titles up for vote in YALSA’s Teens’ Top Ten project at www.ala.org/yalsa/teenstopten. Local teenagers Katrina Rhinehart, Elliott Darby, Jonah Parrish, and Ryan Keane led the Kreutz Creek Library project. To get started, they met with a local videographer to learn tips and strategies to improve their

filming and storytelling techniques. Over several weeks, they planned content, filmed on location, edited, and then posted their finished video to YouTube, where it can be viewed at https://youtu.be/woq_QjQtmrY. The teenagers now plan to create a Young Adult Book YouTube channel. Kreutz Creek Library is located at 66 Walnut Springs Road in Hellam and was the first branch of York County Libraries. It actively serves the community with educational programming, resources, and technology access. Community support through the “Imagine. Discover. Connect.” campaign is helping the library move from its 1970s FEMA trailer into the soon-to-be renovated Hellam Township building. For more information about Dollar General and its Youth Literacy Grants, readers may visit www.dollargeneral.com. The mission of the Young Adult Library Services Association is to support library staff in alleviating the challenges teenagers face and in putting all teenagers, especially those with the greatest needs, on the path to successful and fulfilling lives.

but to get to that point takes quite a bit of work,” stated Parnham. Coaches - or any leaders - set the standard for a team, but Parnham emphasized that standards of excellence cannot be imposed by coaches alone. He encouraged the audience to play to the strengths of those they lead. “If you want exceptional results, you have to create exceptional circumstances,” Parnham noted. Calling out an individual’s strengths often yields greater success than harping on the bad, which has the opposite effect of not building confidence. “I’ve never met anybody that likes to be shouted at or abused in front of their peers - it just doesn’t work,” said Parnham. “Success leaves clues. Focus on the most important areas and make them trademark behaviors.” Prior to his current role, Parnham served as head coach of the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Team (USWNT), guid-

Columbia Life Network, in partnership with United Way of Lancaster County, is looking for volunteers to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Columbia as they work to meet an increasing demand for their free tax preparation assistance. VITA volunteers offer low-income families free tax preparation. Volunteers do not need to have tax expertise or experience, just a passion to help others, connect with their community, and engage in a program that strives to make an immediate economic difference in Lancaster County. United Way will provide free training to individuals willing to commit to volunteering as free tax preparers for VITA clients. Training will take place from November through January. VITA asks for four hours of volunteer time per week during tax season. VITA will offer free tax preparation in Columbia from Tuesday, Jan. 28, through Wednesday, April 15, 2020. The site will offer free tax appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Individuals who make less than $62,000 can call 2-1-1 or visit www.freetaxpreplancaster.org to schedule an appointment starting in January. Those interested in volunteering or learning more may contact Jesse Brubacher at brubacher@uwlanc.org or visit the website above.

MERCHANDISER - Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville Edition -

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Due to recent changes in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), girls may now enjoy the same Scouting activities as boys. Seven girl troops have formed in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, including Troop 90G, reported Sis George, chair of the committee that oversees Troop 90G and its brother group, Troop 90B. Troops 90B and 90G meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3825 Concordia Road, Columbia, and they will host an open house for any interested person ages 11 to 17 and their parents on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Guests may observe the respective troops’ regular meetings, which typically include training in an aspect of first aid, planning for upcoming events, and an active game. “Sometimes we just go up to Grubb Lake and hike around,” said Derik Shelor, Scoutmaster for the boys’ troop. Shelor helped to get the ball rolling on the formation of the girls’ troop, as the closest one is in Mount Joy, and there was some interest from the community for a troop closer to Mountville. “My daughter grew up watching my son go camping once a month, and she wanted that too,” he said. “(Her) goal is to be the first Eagle Scout in the troop.” Kelly Rine volunteered to serve as Scoutmaster for the new troop. Her sons are alumni of

Troop 90, and Rine was a den leader when they were Cub Scouts. The fledgling group of five girls had its first meeting in the spring. A few of the experienced boys have mentored the girl troop. “We are a Scout-led program,” Rine explained. “All of our girls are first-year Scouts, so they don’t have experience in (leading a troop), so they’re learning from the older boys.” Troops 90B and 90G are separate entities, but they are cooperative in several areas. The girls’ troop will have access to the boys’ camping, kayaking, and canoeing equipment until the girls build up a supply of their own. The two groups go on some activities together, and they share adult supervisors. Meeting at the same time and location makes it convenient for siblings to participate in Scouting, Rine said. The two troops have a full schedule of events planned through the end of 2020. This includes kayaking and high adventure trips, visiting the National Zoo and several battlefields, attending Scout camps, cold weather camping, snow skiing, participatingin the Mountville Memorial Day Parade, and more. Safety, particularly related to sexual integrity, is important, so the troops adhere to BSA’s strict regulations, which have been designed to protect children and adults. George noted that other BSA programs, such as Explorers,

Sea Scouts, and Venture Patrols, have been coed for at least 20 years, so adding girl troops has not required the organization to start from scratch. “We’re taking what they’ve been doing and applying it to everything,” Shelor said. The activity in November 2019 will focus on Scouting for Food. Troop members will spend a day distributing empty grocery bags, and then on Saturday, Nov. 16, after camping on the lawn of the Mountville Church of the Brethren, they will collect bags filled with nonperishable food. The community typically donates more than a ton of food for the Columbia Food Bank through Troop 90B’s Scouting for Food efforts. The troops also participate in service projects. These include roadside cleanups, mulching at Concordia Church, hosting a food drive, directing traffic for Mountville lawn concerts, planting trees for Mountville borough, opening the Mountville Pool, and providing labor at the Mountville Library book sale. The boys have traditionally accumulated 400 to 500 service hours per year. The Scoutmasters would appreciate being informed of families’ plans to attend the Nov. 5 open house. They also welcome inquiries about joining or volunteering with the two troops. Rine may be emailed at Kelly.rine@comcast.net, and Shelor may be contacted at 717517-6340 or dshelor@gmail.com.

Walking Tour Set Rivertownes PA USA will host its annual Iron Furnace Walking Tour sponsored by will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. The tour, which is in its 17th year, will start at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, in the Lancaster County Chickies Day Use Park. The tour tells the history of the Lancaster County iron industry. It begins with an overview of the role that the Susquehanna River played in the Industrial Revolution during the mid-1800s to early 1900s. The tour will include the Henry Clay Furnace and the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. Participants will walk along the paved Northwest River Trail. The Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Furnace Exhibit is a new addition at the Iron Center. The exhibit houses many of the artifacts dug up during the 1989 to 1994 summer field studies conducted by Evans and students from Millersville University. The tour will be led by David Haneman, Rivertownes president, and Lenny Droege, director of the Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace Center. A weekend conference staged at two western Lancaster County historical societies will explore the relationships among American Indians and the first Europeans to settle, farm, and trade in central Pennsylvania in the 18th century. A variety of programs will be open to the public without charge. The conference will begin on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. with the Millersville Area Historical Society’s meeting at the Millersville municipal center, 100 Municipal Drive. Nicole Eustace, professor of history at New York University, will present a program titled “Murder and Mercy on the Susquehanna: Captain Civility of Conestoga Teaches Pennsylvania Colonists New Principles of Justice.” At 10:30 a.m., conference participants may enjoy a self-guided historical driving tour to refresh their memories of the William Penn land area and the Native American use of that land. The tour was created by local histori-

ans Darvin Martin and Christine Brubaker. The tour will stop at notable sites along the Conestoga River and Indian Creek and conclude at the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, where lunch will be served. The tour will also include a stop at land owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners, which has public access and is a Lancaster County Historic Preservation Trust site. Brubaker, who organized the conference, is spearheading a movement to have the abandoned house and its surrounding land designated as a cultural and historic heritage park, with a proposed name of PennLogan Outdoor Education Center. The park would be dedicated to the indigenous people and provincial settlers of Pennsylvania and highlight the Native Americans’ Great Conestoga Road, Pennsylvania founder William Penn, and Penn’s secretary, James Logan, who owned land in Conestoga and Manor townships.

At 1 p.m., Barry Lee, a board member and song leader for Circle Legacy Center, a local Native American advocacy group, will share his wampum belts and heritage stories. The conference will continue on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., when the CAHS hosts Will Fenton, director of scholarly innovation at The Library Company of Philadelphia. Fenton will introduce a new graphic novel, “Ghost River: The Fall and Rise of the Conestoga,” which was produced with assistance from Circle Legacy Center, Pew Charitable Trust scholars, and public school teachers. Lancaster newspaper columnist and author Jack Brubaker will discuss the aftermath of the massacre of Conestoga Native Americans in 1763. The conference has been designed to promote awareness of early Native American and European relations and, especially, of the major role Logan played in connecting the two groups. Logan, whose primary home was

After the half, the Tide slowed a little. Justin Elliot took one in on the ground from ten yards out and Redding again found the end zone when he caught a 30-yard pass from best friend, McCleary. Redding ended with three catches for 58 yards and two scores while also going over a 100 receptions for his career. He also is only 45 yards short of 1,000 receiving yards on the season, which solidly puts him in the conversation for section three receiver of the year. He also leads the league in touchdown catches with 11. McCleary ended with a mere 210 yards but did tally five total touchdowns, four via his cannon arm, which gives him a league leading 29 on the year. Tucker led all wide outs with five catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Demetrius Diaz-Ellis also contributed as he had one catch for 42 yards and ran for another 38 yards on the ground. Justin Elliot led the rushing attack with 80 yards on the ground and a score. Rivas also got in on the action, going for 18 yards and a touchdown. Altogether they ran the ball 31 times for 154 yards and three scores. Columbia ended the game with 364 yards of total offense while giving up 231 yards to Northern Lebanon with only 45 of those yards coming on the ground. Another fun fact is that the Tide did not punt at all. The win moves the Tide to 4-5 on the year, which is the most wins since 2012, which is also the last time the program made the playoffs. Talking playoffs, Columbia does have a chance of making them as long as they pick up one more win. Some of these players have been on this team when they did not even win a

game so to go 4-5 or potentially 5-5 is huge for them. It shows the growth that coach Bud Kyle has preached since the beginning of the year. The team met at the end of the season and put together goals while Kyle did not mention them directly, he said the guys know they

up for one of Corwell’s 10 receptions of the game, this one good for an eight-yard score. A missed two-point conversion attempt left the score 6-0. The Trojans controlled the remainder of the opening quarter, ripping off 17 unanswered points to take a 17-6 lead into the second 12minute period. Jalen Smalls, who finished with a game high 142 yards rushing, accounted for Wissahickon’s first score when he broke loose for a 55-yard TD and a 7-6 lead. Nate DeVincent pushed the lead to 10-6 a short while later when he connected on the first of two field goals, this one a 34yarder. The Trojans went to the air for their final score of the frame with Jackson Intrieri hauling in one of his two catches of the game, this one a 23-yard pitch and catch from

Aiden Defeo. Eastern York regained the lead with two early second quarter scores, the first on a one-yard Seitz plunge that cut the Trojan lead down to 17-14 after the successful two-point conversion. Seitz went back to the air to collect the team’s second TD of the frame and his second TD pass of the game. Jake Crumling, who finished with 50 yards on five catches, was the recipient of this touchdown pass that covered 27 yards and made it 21-17 after Liz Heistand’s PAT conversion. The remainder of the frame belonged to the home team as the Trojans put another 10 points on the board to enjoy a 27-21 cushion at the break. Smalls moved Wissahickon back in front with his second rushing touchdown of the

game, this one an 18-yard rumble that made it 24-21 while DeVincent finished the first half scoring with his second field goal, this one from 33-yards. The final two scores of the game came in the third quarter starting with another Seitz one-yard plunge that moved Eastern York back in front. Heistand’s second extra point put the Golden Knights up by one, 28-27. That lead did not last too long as Kyle Lehman made his lone trip to the end zone a short while later, putting his Trojans back in front. DeVincent’s successful kick made it 34-28 where it would remain until the final whistle. Seitz picked up 251 of his 257 total yards through the air, completing 21 of 38 attempts with two scores and one interception. He

added six rushes for six yards and two more scores. Corwell’s 10 catches covered 116 yards while his 10 carries produced 26 yards giving the senior 142 total yards for the game and pushing him over 1000 yards for the season. Bryce Currier (four catches for 65 yards), Jerome Lafranier (one catch for 17 yards and two carries for three yards) and Zach Dice (one catch for three yards and seven carries for 14 yards) accounted for the remainder of Eastern’s offense. VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team closed out their 2019 season on October 17th

with a trip to Division II foe Susquehannock. The Lady Golden Knights entered the game with a 9-8 mark which had them clinging to the 16th and final spot in the District 3-3A Championship Tournament. Eastern was unable to solve the Lady Warriors with Susquehannock picking up the 30 victory. The loss not only dropped Eastern York to 9-9 on the season and 6-8 in YAIAA division play but also slid the Lady Golden Knights down one spot in the District 3-3A power rankings, dropping them out of the championship field for the first time since the 2016 season.

Eastern pulled off a thrilling victory in its District Three Class A field hockey opener last Wednesday with a last-minute goal to defeat Littlestown, 1-0, at Dover. The Golden Knights came away winners when senior Addison Malone slapped a shot into the cage with just 42 seconds left in the game. Malone’s goal, along with a strong, shutout performance in the cage by Eastern goalie Kelsey Felix, moved the sixth-seeded Golden Knights (15-3) into the quarterfinals where they faced 14th-seed Bishop McDevitt (12-7), a 1-0, overtime winner over Northern Lebanon in Wednesday’s first round. (Saturday’s quarterfinal match at Penn Manor’s Comet Field was played after this issue’s deadline.) FOOTBALL When it rains it pours...or in the case of the Eastern York football team, even when things are clicking it’s still not quite enough. The gridiron Golden Knights leaned on Trevor Seitz in their October 18th showdown with Wissahickon and despite 257 total yards and four scores from their senior signal caller Eastern still came home on the wrong side of a 34-28 final. The loss, Eastern’s second setback in as many weeks, leaves the Golden Knights 3-6 overall while their 1-4 mark in Division II play remains untouched. As one could surmise from the final it was a back and forth affair with Eastern scoring first but Wissahickon securing the win by scoring last. Admission to the bazaar will be free of charge, but attendees are invited to bring a bag of dog or cat food to the event. The food will be given to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that operates a pet food bank program and offers low-cost spay and neuter services and vaccinations. Bazaar co-coordinator Brenda Macbeth said that the organizers approached the Pet Pantry and asked for its participation in the event. “Our congregation supports

pets, and (the Pet Pantry) is a big thing in helping people keep their pets,” Macbeth explained. She noted that the church has supported a food bank for people in the past, but this year, the committee wanted to take a different approach. “Rather than sending money (to the beneficiary) after the bazaar, we wanted to do it at the bazaar so more people could participate,” Macbeth said. “Essentially, we’re helping people and pets because we’re helping people keep their pets.” For more information about the bazaar, readers may call the church at 717-684-8072 or Shirk at 717-341-2921.
