Cemetery to be reconsecrated BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For more than 200 years, the cemetery at Canadochly Lutheran Church has served as the final resting place for members of the church and other residents. After centuries of wear and tear, the gravestones were in need of repair, so members of the congregation began a

restoration project in 2019. With the project nearly complete, they invite the public to a reconsecration ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 5. It will be held at approximately 10:45 a.m., following the 10 a.m. worship service, at the church, located at 4921 East Prospect Road, York. “This is a way to honor our See Cemetery pg 4

breakfast, presenting them each with a plaque to take home and one that will be displayed in the lobby at the high school. A 1991 graduate of Columbia High School, Lutz was a member of the basketball team. He earned a bachelor’s degree from York College and served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1992 to 1998. Since 1993, he has been employed by Kleen-Rite Corp., where he currently serves as owner and vice president. During his time with the company, he has helped it

grow from 15 to more than 150 employees and from one location in Columbia to four distribution centers across the country. In his community, Lutz serves as president of the Columbia Economic Development Corporation, an organization he cofounded in 2005. He is a board member of the Columbia Healthcare Foundation, Columbia Animal Shelter and Harold and Judy McKonly Family Foundation. He is also an active member of the Sunsnappers, Elks, Lions and Convene. The father of six, he will celebrate his 25th

A box full of Christmas joy BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Christmas should be a season of joy, but some people could use a little extra love during the holidays. That’s where the Christmas Food Box Delivery program comes in. Organized by the Columbia Lions Club and the Sunsnappers, the initiative delivers boxes of food to people who need them in the greater Columbia area. The delivery will take place on Sunday, Dec. 17. Families may

register online by visiting www.columbialions.org/christ mas, emailing ColumbiaChrist masFoodBoxes@gmail.com or calling 717-715-3592. The registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 1, or when the project reaches 600 families, so early registration is encouraged. Each family will receive all the fixings for a traditional Christmas dinner, said John Meshey, who is helping to organize the event. “They’ll get a turkey, mashed potatoes, filling and canned

At 87 years old, Mable said he wanted his speech to focus on people who have influenced his life. “I would like to run down the list of people who have made me who I am today,” he noted, mentioning his mom and dad. “I have so many people to thank for giving me possibilities.” Since 2008, the Columbia Education Foundation has recognized 20 distinguished alumni. Rarely do we take the time to just pause and be thankful.” Mable graduated from Columbia High School in 1953, participating in football, wrestling and track and field while in school and becoming district champion in shotput. ancestors,” said Eugene Smeltzer, who has joined Jim Anspach and Bruce Herbst in the restoration efforts. “It’s a way to care for them and honor their memory.” Anspach, who is active in upkeep of Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia, recalled that a member of Canadochly Church first mentioned the idea of restoring the headstones. “Our oldest member at the time, Lois B. Leber, asked me multiple times, ‘Isn’t there something we can do with the cemetery?’” he recalled. Many of the stones in the cemetery had fallen over, and many were broken. Others had shifted away from straight rows on the site.

The men spent at least one day a week working on the project, using epoxy glue to fix broken stones and pouring concrete slabs to stabilize slate markers. Funding for supplies was provided by the Canadochly Cemetery Association and Thrivent Financial, and almost all of the work was done by hand. “There were not many stones we didn’t fix,” Herbst said, noting that his motivation for wanting to help with the project was simple: “You see something that’s broken, you need to fix it.” A few of the stones, including a memorial to P.W. Burg, which dates to 1836, were too big to right by hand, and the trio called in help from people who could use equipment to lift the pieces. The men also credit the

church groundskeeper, Bill Dehoff, and his wife, Robin, with taking care of some of the heavy lifting. The church dates to 1733, although the first building wasn’t erected on the site until 1763. Several veterans are buried in the cemetery, including some who served in the Revolutionary War. Many of the stones are written in German, and work will be done to find out more about the cemetery’s residents, Anspach said. Prior to the reconsecration ceremony, the church will host a soup sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. Quarts of ham and bean soup will be available by preorder or same-day sales. The annual event highlights the history of the church, Smeltzer said, noting that “Canadochly” is thought to come from a corruption of a Native American word meaning “at the place of the boiling kettle.” On the date of the reconsecration, the Rev. Families in the Columbia and surrounding areas with ZIP codes 17512, 17547, 17368, 17554, 17582, 17575, and 17538 are eligible to receive a food box. The City of Harrisburg will host the annual Cargill Holiday Parade sponsored by Visit Hershey & Harrisburg on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10 a.m. in downtown Harrisburg. The parade will include giant parade balloons; marching bands; dance, step and drill team performances; decorated floats; characters; and Santa Claus. This year’s theme is “Rockin’ Around the Burg,” and a panel of local celebrity judges will award a gift card to the entry that best exemplifies this theme. The parade route spans 1.5 miles along Front and Second streets from Market Street to North Street, allowing ample space for viewing. Following the parade, attendees may join Santa for free hot chocolate and cookies in Strawberry Square, while supplies last, followed by the awards ceremony, where the top high school marching bands; dance, step or drill teams; and Best in Theme entry will be announced. Road closures will begin at 7 a.m. and end at approximately 2 p.m. The Market Street Bridge will be closed starting at 7 a.m. Additionally, Front and Second streets will be

closed from Market to Forster Streets starting at 7 a.m. The Market Square Garage will offer a special event rate from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. courtesy of Park Harrisburg.
