According to Hasbro, more than 1 million copies of the board game Candy Land are sold each year. If you remember playing it as a child, now’s your chance to step into the game.
Kreutz Creek Library will host LifeSized Candy Land on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam. The drop-in event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m.
“This will be our 10th anniversary of Life-Sized Candy Land,” said branch manager Jennifer Johnson. “We started it in 2012 in our old building, and we’re very excited to have it in the larger space of the new library. It will give us lots of room to play.”
The game board, pieces and characters have been created by members of the Library Squad, the library’s tween and teen leadership group. Each year, the youths create characters who give out candy as players travel through the game.
As Johnson explained, Candy Land tells the story of Lord Licorice,
who has taken over the kingdom from King Candy. “The players are trying to rescue the king by playing the game,” she said. While references will be made to the traditional Candy Land characters such as Plumpy, Queen Frostine and Gramma Nut, the characters in the lifesized version come from the youths’ imagination.
“We started it in 2012 in our old building, and we’re very excited to have it in the larger space of the new library.”
“We have had some very creative ideas from the youth in the past,” Johnson said. “They come up with some really great characters.” Each character also has a backstory that plays a part in the game, she noted, adding, “This group of tweens and teens really enjoys improvisation and performance.”
As people arrive to play the game, they’ll be greeted by youths at the
registration table, where they’ll be able to complete coloring pages and decorate bags for collecting candy while they wait for their turn to play the game. During the game, a caller will announce the moves, and players will collect candy from each character along the game board.
This year, the members of the Library Squad have created new set pieces since the original ones have worn out after a decade of use. Sets have been constructed with PVC piping, fabric, cardboard and more.
Johnson first learned about the idea for Life-Sized Candy Land from a magazine and thought it would work well for Kreutz Creek Library.
“It’s a really unique way to use our space,” she stated. “It’s for all ages, and a lot of families come and play together. It’s nostalgic for the older youth and adults to play. They enjoy trying out a 3D life-sized version of a board game they remember playing.”
There is no charge to play LifeSized Candy Land, and no preregistration is required. For more information, visit www.yorklibraries.org /hellam-kreutz-creek.

Gen. David L. Mann will speak at the banquet. “Our speaker is an accomplished veteran,” noted Kevin Kraft, who is the secretary and treasurer of the club. “He is Columbia’s seventh general. We have seven generals and two admirals from Columbia, and I don’t think there’s a town this size anywhere else with that many honored veterans.”
In his most recent assignment, Mann served as the commanding general for the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army
Forces Strategic Command, while also serving as commanding general for U.S. Strategic Command’s Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense. His responsibilities included leading, training and developing the Army’s current and future global space and missile defense forces. Mann retired in 2017, having served more than 35 years in the Army. A graduate of Millersville University, he earned master’s degrees in engineering management from George Wash-
ington University and in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He has been married to his wife, Robyn, for more than 45 years. They have two children and four grandchildren.
The Bainbridge Band will perform prior to the banquet, beginning about 9:45 a.m., Kraft said. “At the beginning of the program, they will also play a medley of all of the theme songs of the branches of the military, and I’m going to ask people who served in each branch to stand and be recognized,” he noted. The formal program will begin at 11 a.m. Members of the VFW women’s auxiliary will prepare the meal, which will feature a turkey dinner.
Kraft explained that the 11-11-11 Club holds the banquet annually to honor veterans and thank them for their service. The club formed after

New this year, the bazaar will feature local children’s book author Shelleen Weaver, who will be selling and signing the first three books of her “Fruit Fables” series. The stories use the adventures of talking animals to discuss the godly character traits Paul talks about in Galatians 5:22-23, known as the “fruit of the spirit.”
Along with vendors, the bazaar will feature giveaway baskets showcasing a variety of themes, including Pennsylvania sports teams, kitchen and household goods and family night out/family night in, Smith stated. “We also have local gift cards to Columbia and Wrightsville businesses,” she noted.
Lots of food will be for sale at the bazaar as well, Smith said, including pretzel sandwiches, hamburger barbecue, stuffing balls with or without gravy, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut and baked goods,
including peanut butter balls, cheesecake, cookies and mini apple pies. Chicken corn soup, bean soup and tomato bisque soup will be featured. “Our soups are a big hit,” Smith remarked. “We usually sell out.” Homemade chili will be available to go. All other food items will be available for eat-in or takeout. Proceeds from the bazaar will be used for ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the church property, Smith said, noting that the church currently has a few big projects in the works.
Pictures of craft items and giveaway drawing basket items are available at www.historicsalemucc.org or may be found on the church’s Facebook page by searching for “Historic Salem United Church of Christ, Columbia PA.” The church social hall may be accessed from the Burning Bridge Antique Market parking lot, 304 Walnut St.

Ironville
Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC), 4020 Holly Drive, Columbia, will hold its annual holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will offer food and baked goods available for purchase, craft vendors and a white elephant room, where donated items will be sold.
Food options will be hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, pretzels from Epex Soft Pretzels, chicken corn soup available for purchase by the bowl and many baked goods prepared by members of the congregation, including apple dumplings. Several church members will sell homemade barbecue sandwiches, which may be purchased by the sandwich or by the pound.
Twelve craft vendors will sell their wares during the event, and a craft table will offer items made by women of the church. The holiday bazaar will also have grocery store gift cards, from which a percentage of the funds raised will benefit Ironville UMC. In the white elephant room, household items donated by church members will be sold, similar to a yard sale. “It’s an opportunity for people to come shop and hang out,” said Ellie Shirk, who organizes the bazaar each year with fellow church member Karen Baker. “I love the comradery and fellowship of (the holiday bazaar).”
The holiday bazaar is Ironville UMC’s largest yearly fundraiser. The
Holiday
money raised this year will be used for a few different projects that the church is undertaking, such as switching internet providers and purchasing equipment for its new pastor, Jared Stoltzfus. The new provisions will allow Stoltzfus to livestream worship services from Ironville UMC’s website.
“Our goal of setting up the livestream is to continue to be present in the community,” said Stoltzfus. “We want to be connected and help people that are looking for a church to find one.” Stoltzfus became Ironville UMC’s pastor in July of this year. “It’s been wonderful to get to know the Columbia area and community,” he added. “There’s always a learning curve when you’re transferred to a new church, but I’m looking forward to meeting more people and engaging the community.”
For more information on the bazaar, contact Ironville UMC at 717684-8072.
