Four years ago, the members of Boy Scout Troop 64 first participated in the December holidays wreath-laying ceremony at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC). “ When it was over, many graves didn’t have a wreath on them. The Scouts asked why all graves weren’t honored with a wreath,” Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans recalled. “ We researched and found out all wreaths are privately donated, and we decided our troop should help to get wreaths sponsored.” Troop members have worked hard in the ensuing years to collect sponsorships, and last year, 40,000 graves at IGNC had a wreath. The troop works with Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization that puts holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves to honor their military service. The wreaths are placed deliberately, with a small

ceremony where the deceased veteran’s name is spoken aloud and saluted, ensuring that the individual is not forgotten. “Many veterans in our cemeteries don’t have any family left to remember them,” Evans said. For those who do have families, Troop 64 has a bugler who plays at graves when families request that service. While many of the people interred at IGNC are known only by name to the members of Troop 64, there is a personal connection with one individual. “Last year we found out a Scout from our troop was buried at Indiantown Gap,” Evans said, noting that the former Scout served as an Army Ranger and was killed in action in 2016. “This made what we were doing really come to life for the Scouts. A patrol flag he made hangs in our Scout room.” Troop 64 has not limited its involvement to December nor to IGNC. Several Scouts have made

it a mission to do community service at IGNC, and they have helped with projects there already this year. Additionally, the troop has helped to get two local cemeteries on board with honoring veterans. 2019 marks the first time the Mennonite cemeteries in Landisville and Salunga will participate in WAA. The former will need 135 wreaths, and the latter will require 85. “Looking out over the cemeteries after the wreaths have been laid is overwhelming,” Evans remarked. “So many graves, so many families, so much sacrifice for us, for America.” Monday, Dec. 2, has been set as the deadline for wreath sponsorships. The wreath-laying ceremony at IGNC will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 14, and the wreaths will be placed beginning at about 1 p.m. According to the IGNC page at www.wreaths acrossamerica.org, nearly 10,000
wreaths have been sponsored for the 2019 ceremony, and Troop 64 had reached 181 out of its goal of 3,500. Wreaths will be laid in Landisville and Salunga at about 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. Details are still being confirmed, Evans said. Boy Scout Troop 64 meets at Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to visit anytime. For more information or to sponsor a wreath, readers may call Evans at 717-572-3448 or visit https://wreathsacross america.org/pages/43189/. commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.” In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the last minute and was embraced by the warm arms of the United States,” Le said. Navy medic Gerrie Strobel now lives in Windsor and gladly comes to Lancaster for Writeface programs. She feels strongly about Agent Orange awareness and advocates for survivors of the dangerous chemical. “There’s so much more to be said about it,” Strobel said, citing Agent Orange side effects and untreated PTSD as challenges taking a toll on Vietnam veterans and the inspirations for artwork that she will exhibit in the Nov. 10 event. Admission to “ Veterans, Values, and Voices” will be free of charge. The event will take place in the Ware Center’s 400seat Steinman Hall, and the
organizers hope to have a capacity crowd. “We want them to see the value of what we’re doing with the veteran community and be more inclined to support it,” Ginder said. “It’s all about getting a better (sense) of the veteran experience, getting the general public to understand that in a better way,” Hower remarked, adding that he plans to speak about the time he accidentally wandered into an anti-war rally in Chicago while wearing a military uniform in 1972. “Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued. Writeface is dedicated to helping military veterans develop a healthier spirit through guided writing exercises and had led a class at the Ware Center in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar event seemed like a natural fit. “We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street. At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program.
“Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained. Marc Zito, an Army veteran who lives in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will reflect on transitions. “In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.” Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.” Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my spelling,” Dunkleberger

Yutzy said that B2BD “kind of started by accident.” Yutzy had been teaching a theater class at a small, private school, and when the class got cut, many students were disappointed. She wrote a script for the students to
perform outside of school, and that play was performed in 2013 at Hammer Creek Mennonite Church. “The parents and kids loved it so much that we decided to keep doing shows,” said Yutzy. “We love teens, and we love giving them the opportunity to use their talents or discover talents that maybe they didn’t even know they have,” Yutzy shared. “We want to give them a place to be loved and to celebrate their gifts.” “And, like our name says, we’re always doing something different,” continued Yutzy. “It’s fun to always try new things.” In 2018, B2BD staged both spring and fall productions, as well as a summer tour of shows at various locations. Nearly 700 walkers turned out at John Rudy County Park in York on Sept. 15 for the York Heart Walk. The event raised more than $58,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). News personality Brittany Garzillo hosted the Heart Walk opening festivities, which included health information, blood pressure checks and CPR demonstrations courtesy of WellSpan Health and UPMC, children’s activities and healthy snacks. Among the participants were 2-year-old Bristol Miller and her parents, Josh and Leah Miller, of Airville. In March 2018, then-14-month-old Bristol suffered a pediatric cardiac arrest. First responders eventually restored a normal heart rhythm and got Bristol safely to the hospital, where she spent five weeks. She received an implantable defibrillator to protect her against future episodes. Today, she has returned to a normal, healthy life, and she recently became a big sister. After the Millers shared their story, Bristol cut the ribbon to officially start this year’s Heart Walk. WellSpan Health took home honors as the top team. Missy Mulcahy Fischer, who raised funds through her annual Run With Heart 5K in memory of her late husband Mark Mulcahy, was honored as the top walker. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association in

To promote recycling and celebrate America Recycles Day on Friday, Nov. 15, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is sponsoring puppet show assembly programs in nine York County schools. The recycling-themed program, titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles,” was created by puppeteer Kathleen Jacobs. Students will see ordinary household items “recycled” into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, as well as reuse and recycling of materials. Jacobs has also developed the YCSWA mascot, Buster the Combustor Dragon, into a char-
acter who tells students of the waste-to-energy technology used at the York County Resource Recovery Center (RRC). She will present the assembly programs from Wednesday, Nov. 6, through Friday, Nov. 15. Performances will run approximately 45 minutes and feature audience participation. Schools hosting performances are Delta-Peach Bottom Elementary, Holy Trinity Catholic, Locust Grove Elementary, Newberry Elementary, Pleasant View Elementary, Southern Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Wallace Elementary and Yorkshire Elementary.

Church Announces New Stake Presidency On Sept. 15, the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met for its semiannual stake conference. At this meeting, former Stake President Conrad Knudson and his two counselors, David Kenley and Allen Zerbe, were released from their callings in the stake presidency, and a new presidency was called. Replacing Knudson as the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake president is Brad Smith of Lititz. Serving as his first counselor is president Allen Zerbe of Quarryville, formerly the second counselor. The new second counselor is president Byron Wilson of York. The stake president is also assisted by a high council, consisting of 12 men. Two visiting church leaders attended the conference to oversee the selection of the new stake presidency and to address the large congregation assembled for the conference. General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of Northern Virginia set apart the new presidency, and they delivered speeches to the audience. When a stake holds a conference, it lasts two days with leadership meetings on Saturdays and talks by church leaders and selected members of the various congregations, along with special musical numbers on both days. All wards (larger congregations) and branches (smaller congregations) in a stake meet together in one

Visiting General Authorities met with local church leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sept. 15 at the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake Center in Lancaster to participate in the release of the former stake presidency and the calling of a new presidency. General Authorities in attendance and the newly called stake presidency are (from left) General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah, First Counselor Allen Zerbe of Quarryville, Stake President Brad Smith of Lititz, Second Counselor Byron L. Wilson of York, and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of Northern Virginia. Smith, Zerbe, and Wilson will oversee the business of the Church in Lancaster and York counties. building on Stake Conference Sunday for approximately two hours. All nine units of the stake convened at the stake center, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, to learn more about Jesus Christ. The congregations included Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, Lititz, Shrewsbury, West York, and York Wards along with two smaller branches - the Columbia and Dover branches. The nine units make up a stake, which will be led by the new stake president
and his two counselors; Smith will preside over all of Lancaster and York counties’ Latter-day Saints. The Church’s Newsroom describes a stake president as “the lay leader of a stake, which is a geographic subdivision similar to a Catholic diocese.” Serving as a volunteer, usually for a period of approximately nine years, the stake president oversees Church programs and stake members in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ. He also oversees the activities of the bishops or ward leaders.

Retired Teacher Announces First Book Local retired teacher Sandy Brown recently released her first book, “The Healing Light: A Super Nine Adventure,” which is a children’s testimony of God’s healing power. Brown is a retired Penn Manor reading teacher. She lives in Manor Township with her husband, Daniel. They have three children, 10 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. “The Healing Light: A Super Nine Adventure” is filled with spiritual lessons for children and is designed to be read by children and their parents as an opening to meaningful faith discussions. The book reflects Brown’s passion for teaching and pointing others to Jesus, and it comes with a Scripture-based parent guide. In the book, an unexplained light leads nine ordinary cousins on a journey to discover their own spiritual gifts. By calling
on the source of all power, they are transformed into superheroes of truth, wisdom, kindness, courage, helpfulness, compassion, faith, joy, and love. In this adventure, the Super Nine attack cancer and glorify God. The book is published by Christian Faith Publishing. Brown will be available to sign books at Tropical Smoothie on Comet Drive in Millersville on Friday, Nov. 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. and at George Street Cafe, 304 N. George St., Millersville, on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers can also purchase the book at traditional brick and mortar stores or online at Amazon, Apple iTunes, BAM, or Barnes & Noble.

Groff North America (GNA), an industrial hemp agribusiness located in Red Lion, has announced a partnership with US Cotton, based in Gastonia, N.C., on the launch of a hemp-based cosmetic brand, BLUMME. The announcement comes nearly one year since the United States Congress passed the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which declassified industrial hemp from a Schedule 1 drug to an agricultural commodity, legal in all 50 states. GNA was founded by Steve Groff, a Lancaster County-born third-generation dairy farmer turned orthopedic surgeon. The business is focused on pioneering the resurgence of the hemp industry in the United States and beyond. GNA launched operations in December 2018 and has a focus on whole plant utilization. GNA’s processing center and research park headquartered in Red Lion accepted delivery of North America’s first commercially installed HempTrain Advanced Processing Facility in October. The complex will serve as one of the first of its kind in the United States, providing research, development, and production of hempbased derivatives. GNA’s vertically integrated business model allows it to understand the product life cycle from raw material generation to consumer product. GNA recently announced the acquisition of Canadian Greenfield Technologies, the developer of the HempTrain. GNA anticipates the deal to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2019. GNA has also assembled a team of multi-disciplinary physicians who oversee its brick-and-mortar retail stores and consumer brand, Farmacy Partners (FP). More information on GNA is available at https://groffna.com.
