Delivering Christmas Joy BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For 40 years, food boxes have been distributed to residents in need in the Columbia area, and the tradition will continue this year. Organized by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, the Christmas Food Box Delivery will take place on Sunday, Dec. 18. Families may register online by visiting www.columbialions.org/christmas, emailing ColumbiaChristmas FoodBoxes@gmail.com or calling 717-715-3592. The registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 2, or when the project reaches 600 families, so early registration is encouraged. “This project started in 1982 with one box, and it evolved from that,” said Lions member John Meshey. “It’s about fulfilling a need in our community.” It takes hundreds of volunteers to make the project possible, Meshey stated. The boxes will include essential holiday dinner items as well as additional groceries - a turkey, bread, milk,

Columbia To Present “Still Life With Iris” hat would you do if you lost all of your memories? That’s the question facing Iris, the title character in “Still Life With Iris.” The play will be presented at Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. “Still Life With Iris” begins in Nocturno, a land where the inhabitants work through the night to create the natural world we see during the day. “Everyone has their own job,” explained Carly VanBuren, a junior who plays Iris. “Someone makes the spots that go on ladybugs. Someone makes leaves.

W

Someone makes rainwater.” Although the play starts out in a happy mood, with Iris safely at home among friends, it soon turns a bit darker, explained Matthew Fanous, a senior who portrays Mister Matternot. “Iris is taken from her home, and her PastCoat is removed,” he said, noting that each character wears a “PastCoat,” which contains all of his or her memories. “When hers is taken away, Iris doesn’t know who she is or where she came from.” Sent to live with the Great Goods, people who seek perfection, Iris embarks on a journey to reclaim her memories. “I really connected to this show, and I think audiences will, too,”

said Kiara Serrano, a senior who plays Annabel Lee, a pirate who befriends Iris. “It reminds me of when I was a little kid, thinking about all of the things I wanted to do. It made me think of making wishes on a star.” With imagination as a major theme of the play, audiences can expect to see lots of bright colors and big, dramatic set pieces, Kiara noted. “There are a lot of creative things happening on stage,” she remarked. Carly said the characters go through a variety of mindsets throughout the show. “It’s really a rollercoaster of emotions,” she shared. “For my character, she’s a normal, happy girl at first, playing

with her friends, and then it gets darker and sadder, and then it gets more hopeful. There is also a big plot twist.” Matthew added that getting into character for the play has been both fun and challenging, crediting director Janet Wood with helping the cast bond. “The best part of this show has been the large sense of community in our group,” he said. “Every day, we do grounding activities before rehearsal, which help us get physically and mentally engaged and ready to go. This has been so beneficial to our group. This show has been a lot of fun to work on.” Tickets to “Still Life With Iris” will be available at the door.

The Columbia Lions Club recently presented checks to four nonprofit organizations. The club awarded $800 to the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company, which owns and operates Locust Street Park. The funds were donated by those who attended the Aug. 19 Music in the Park concert. The Old Columbia Public Grounds Company began because Samuel Wright, the town’s founder, desired to do something of lasting benefit for the citizens of the town. The Lions own and maintain the gazebo in the park. The Lions Club also donated $4,000 each to the Columbia Boys Athletic Association (CBAA), Glatfelter Memorial Field Foundation and Zion Hill Cemetery. These funds were proceeds from the Thunder on the River car show held on June 18. The CBAA offers sports such as baseball, softball, T-ball, football, cheerleading, wrestling and basketball to boys and girls in the Columbia area. Donations received are used for equipment, league fees, referee and umpire fees and facility maintenance and upkeep. To learn more, visit www.cbaaonline.weebly.com. Glatfelter Memorial Field was dedicated in memory of Lt. Richard Glatfelter, a graduate of Columbia High School and West Point Military

Academy. The 28-acre facility is the home field for the CBAA, Columbia High School girls’ softball, the Mariners United Soccer Club and the Columbia Street Hockey League. National Night Out, church camps, field days, food drives and other community events are also held at the facility, which is owned and maintained by the Glatfelter Memorial Field Foundation. Zion Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of several soldiers who fought with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the Union Army’s first African American regiment in the Civil War. This regiment was depicted in the 1989 movie “Glory” starring Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. Among those buried at Zion Hill is Robert Loney, a Civil War soldier and conductor on the Underground Railroad whose family was among the first group of slaves freed in the early 1800s. The Columbia Historic Preservation Society, in partnership with Columbia Borough, has acquired the stewardship of the cemetery with the goal of preserving this landmark and telling the stories of men and women who played a significant role in shaping the history of Columbia and the nation. Donations are accepted at www.gofundme.com/f/zion -hill-cemetery-restoration-project.

Jeff Seibert (far left), a representative of the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company and a member of the Columbia Lions Club, and Glenn Bachert (far right) from Old Columbia Public Grounds accept a check from Lions Club members Skip McElhenny (second from left) and Rob Anderson.

Royer’s To Collect Holiday Cards, Coloring Pages

ESFI from pg 3

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts will collect holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November as the company continues its decade-long affiliation with the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Items may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear service member” or “Dear veteran.” When writing in the cards, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who have a per-

sonal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God bless you” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.

them into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Do not overload a single electrical outlet with too many devices. People should keep themselves, their decor and their equipment at least 10 feet away from power lines during and after installation and removal. Turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before leaving home or going to bed for the night. Brenneman reminded property owners that there is another, safer way to approach outdoor holiday decorating chores: turn them over to a professional outdoor

holiday lighting expert like Christmas Decor. The service includes design, installation, maintenance, takedown and storage. For more information on Christmas Decor, contact Brenneman at 717-318-1941 or christmasdecoroflancaster @gmail.com. Information is also available at www.christmas decor.net. Christmas Decor, a Texasbased company, was founded in 1986. Today, it operates in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada, and plans are underway to open locations in more than 40 new markets through franchise expansion.

Pathways Center To Offer Holiday Support Program BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

The Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, a program of Hospice & Community Care, will offer Coping With the Holidays, a five-week support series, beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The program, which will focus on helping those in mourning to navigate the holidays, is available to anyone in Lancaster and York counties and will cover a different topic each week. During the first session, the series will explain what it calls the “holiday survival guide” and emphasize the importance of allowing yourself permission to be in your current place with the process of mourning. “The

holidays are a family-oriented time full of traditions that people likely shared with loved ones,” said Elaine Ostrum, adult services coordinator for the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. “People may not have the energy or interest in those things they’ve done in years past.” Many people dealing with losses that occurred around the holidays are reminded of those they lost when the season comes around again. Coping With the Holidays seeks to affirm those choosing to handle the holiday season in the way they see fit. The second week of the series, which will fall on the week of Thanksgiving, will focus on how to

practice gratitude in everyday life, even in the face of grief. In its third session, the group will discuss ways to remember loved ones and honor their memory over the holidays. Participants will be invited to share their own ideas on how to honor the traditions of late family members; some people make a special ornament for their Christmas tree, and others make a donation to a charity each year in a loved one’s name. In December, the fourth meeting will elaborate on how to live in the present and not be overwhelmed by the future. “We can get lost in overwhelming emotions as we think ahead,” said Ostrum. “We want to share reminders to keep us in the present moment and focus on what we need today.”

DEADLINES (for the following Wednesday issue call for holiday deadlines)

Coping With the Holidays will conclude with its final session, which will raise the question, “What are the gifts?” Participants will talk about how to recognize the positive aspects of each holiday, discuss what they’ve learned through the program and share stories about how they’ve grown since the first session. The series will be offered at the E.E. Manny Murry Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, and the Ann B. Barshinger Hospice Center, 235 St. Charles Way, York. Two sessions will also be offered online via Zoom, and registration must be completed at least two days prior to the session one wishes to attend.
