“Nothing makes me happier than to see our clients,” said Danielle Peters, director of the Columbia Food Bank, “but when someone says, ‘You’re not going to see me coming in here anymore,’ that’s music to my ears. Most people don’t want to lose a client, but for us, that means they are back on their feet.”
The Columbia Food Bank has been operating out of St. Paul Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., for decades. “It started as an outreach of the church. The ladies did a hot lunch program over 40 years ago,” Peters stated. “Very shortly after starting that, they realized
something a little more was needed.” The food bank began under the umbrella of the church, but in 2014, it became its own nonprofit organization, renting the space in the church’s parish hall.
“We are not government supported at all,” said Peters. “We depend on the kindness of the community to operate. We get donations from businesses, organizations and individuals.” Groups including the Boy Scouts, who donate items collected through Scouting for Food, help to keep the shelves stocked with nonperishable items. The food bank relies on financial donations to provide ground beef, hot dogs, cheese, butter and eggs.
“We also get donations of breads
and sweets from Giant and Weis,” Peters commented. “We try to focus on healthy food, but every now and then, you need a cookie.”
Potential clients need to show one form of ID to receive food, and anyone in Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield or Manor Township is eligible to use the food bank. If someone from another area comes in, though, Peters won’t turn him or her away.
“If you walk through those doors, you are going to walk out with groceries,” she shared, adding that if someone is from outside the service area, she will direct them to their closest food bank for future visits. The food bank staff and volunteers also provide information upon request about other community resources, such as health care or employment services.
Peters credits her co-director, Suzanne Ollar, with keeping track of the food bank’s numbers. From January through October of this year, the organization distributed more than 62,000 pounds of food, feeding 795 households and 1,863 individuals.
Clients can visit the food bank once a month, where they are given bags of food based on household size, along with toiletries such as soap, toothpaste or toilet paper.
“There is such a need for this right now,” Peters said. “Rent is through the roof. Gas prices are high. Most of the people who come to us are working. They are just trying to feed their families.”
Peters said the success of the food bank is due to the commitment of her volunteers and the generosity of the community. “I hate hearing the numbers of how much food we’ve given out, because when I hear them, I start to panic that we won’t have enough,” Peters said, but she finds comfort in the miracle of the loaves and the fishes, noting, “We have never had to turn anyone away.”
The Columbia Food Bank is open from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is located at the rear of the church. For more information, call 717-449-5101.

There’s a new opportunity to enjoy nature in York County. The Lancaster Conservancy and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) have announced that almost 1,100 acres in Hellam Township will be the home of Pennsylvania’s newest state park. Susquehanna Riverlands State Park will join the Conservancy’s two existing nature preserves in the Hellam Hills Conservation Area, providing protection for 2,100 acres of contiguous forests.

State Police To Offer Law Enforcement Training Program
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”
Students who register for the program will receive matching Tshirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.
“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplines - marching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”
Scenarios may include re-enacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”
This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.
He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community
above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.
The program also encourages a
relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids

As Weese noted, the public is invited to donate gently used sweaters and gloves, which will be given to veterans in Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals or veterans who live in VA homes. For the stocking component, people may donate items such as lip balm, shampoo, deodorant, nail clippers, mints, gum, playing cards, socks, batteries and crossword puzzles. The public may also donate old cell phones, which are refurbished for sale; the proceeds are used to purchase calling cards for troops to stay connected with their families.
“The military makes incredible sacrifices on our
behalf by ensuring our freedom and safety in America,” Weese stated. “Donating a gently used sweater or purchasing a new one, going to the store and purchasing a few items for the Stockings for Soldiers is a great way to express our gratitude to them during the holidays.”
Donations will support people in the local area as well as beyond Pennsylvania. “At the conclusion of the donation drive, items will be delivered to the Lebanon and Coatesville VA medical centers,” Weese said. “The VA hospitals will distribute from there whether going to active soldiers that are from our

area or our local veterans.”
Giving Back to Our Heroes is just one way the Columbia Lions Club supports the community through the year, Weese noted. “We felt it was appropriate to support the Giving Back to Our Heroes donation drive in our local community because many of our members served, and most recently the Columbia Hometown Heroes banner program has highlighted those that have served in the military,” he remarked.
“It’s important that we show that our small town can support this donation drive in a big way.”
Donations may be dropped off at Little’s Beverage, 1224 Lancaster Ave., Columbia, in donation boxes located immediately to the left inside the main entrance. For the sweaters and stockings, donations will be accepted through Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Lions Club collects cell phones year-round. For more information or to schedule pickup of items, contact Weese at 717-4492969 or brandonmweese @gmail.com. Kindergartners To Hold Parade
The kindergarten students at Canadochly Elementary School, 100 Abels Road, Wrightsville, will hold a parade on Friday, Nov. 18, to showcase what they have been learning. The parade will be held in the school building at 9:45 a.m., and its format will be a tribute to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Although the event is not open to the public, it will be livestreamed.
Students were given a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) project to work on with their families. The project required the students
to design a float, costume or parade entry based on an assigned letter. Added to the student entries are class book floats, animal floats, and many balloons.
This year, the students will also thank individuals whose work aids the school. Secretaries, custodians, assistants, food service workers, nurses, bus drivers, and school resource officers have been invited to participate.
For more information, contact principal Matt Fried at 717-252-3674 or mfried@ easternyork.net or kindergarten teacher Jeremy Young at 717-252-3674 or jyoung@ easternyork.net.

Phil Wenger, president and CEO of the Lancaster Conservancy, explained that the park is the result of collaboration. “For this new state park, the Conservancy identified the land to be protected, negotiated the sales agreement, completed the due diligence and allowed DCNR to purchase the land without all the work that goes into acquisition,” he said. “At this point, they will begin a planning process with neighbors and partners to create a new state park that many folks from central PA will be able to enjoy.”
Wenger noted that the park is currently open to the public, but there are no restrooms and the only access at the moment is via the Mason-Dixon Trail. “But after planning, it will likely have water access
to launch your boat or kayak,” he stated. “It will have numerous trails and viewing areas of the river. It will likely have camping in some form.”
Protecting the property has been a goal of the Conservancy for some time, said Kate Gonick, senior vice president of land protection and general counsel for the Conservancy. “This property has been on the radar of conservation groups for years,” she shared. “It protects water resources, upland forests and fields in a highly valued, prioritized natural landscape. We are thrilled that the commonwealth recognized its significance and chose to work with the Conservancy to develop a new state park.”
Since its founding in 1969, the Lancaster Conservancy has protect-

Both DCNR and the Conservancy have made major commitments to preserving the Susquehanna Riverlands conservation landscape, investing more than $25 million in clean air, clean water, wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation opportunities by protecting the forested hills of the lower Susquehanna River. Our work doesn’t stop with this announcement. We will continue to protect additional wooded areas of the Susquehanna Riverlands. We are in a race against time, and only by joining together, with public and private resources working across the landscape, will we achieve the success future generations rely on.”

United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation - a nonprofit committed to helping seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives - has announced its 52nd annual gift-wrapping fundraiser. UDS’ gift-wrapping booth can be found at Park City Center in Lancaster from Black Friday, Nov. 25, through Saturday, Dec. 24.
The gift-wrapping booth is one of UDS’ largest yearly fundraisers. In order to staff this year’s booth through its entire 30-day run, UDS is seeking 500 volunteers. Those interested in volunteering should contact Radha Davé at 717-715-8921 or radhad@udservices.org. They may also learn more and contact UDS at www.udservices .org/ gwbvolunteer. Although volunteers who sign up early have
more choice of the time slots, UDS will continue to accept volunteers throughout the holiday season until Dec. 24.
UDS also welcomes new and returning sponsors to help cover the costs of giftwrapping supplies; for more details, contact Larry Aubrey at 717-682-5575 or larrya@ udservices.org. Both local businesses and individual donors are invited to sponsor the booth.
To learn more about UDS and the gift-wrapping fundraiser, visit www.ud services.org.
