SSC To Present “The 1940s Radio Hour” By Chelsea Peifer

An illustrious cast of characters and a score of classic songs are sure to delight audiences as the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) presents “The 1940s Radio Hour,” a play with music by Walton Jones and based on an idea by Jones and Carol Lees. “I picked it because we like doing radio shows here this is our third one,” shared director Jim Johnson. “I love the era, and it is a great feeling of Christmas nostalgia for this time of year.” Performances are scheduled for Fridays to Sundays, Dec. 7 to 9 and Dec. 14 to 16, at SSC, located at the rear of 264 W. Market St., Marietta. All shows will begin at 8 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday shows, which will be at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.susquehanna stageco.com or by calling 717-426-1277.

“The 1940s Radio Hour” depicts the final holiday broadcast of the Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade on the New York radio station WOV in December 1942. Johnson noted that the characters in the radio show work day jobs in addition to broadcasting the show at night and are normal people through and through, as opposed to big stars. “It really is an ensemble show,” added Johnson. The performances will also mark the end of an era for SSC, as “The 1940s Radio Hour” is slated to be the final production that takes place at the theater company’s current location. Shows for the 2019 season are slated to be performed in the group’s new space at 133 W. Market St., a former church building that is in the process of being transformed into the Marietta Center for the Arts. “It’s sad, but I’m also really looking forward to the new place, so it’s See “The 1940s Radio Hour” pg 3

Tree Society Launches Membership Drive ’Tis The Season For Winterfest The Columbia Tree Society has begun its annual membership drive for 2019. The society is the fundraising auxiliary for the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission. Membership dues enable the Shade Tree Commission to purchase and maintain street trees in the borough. Over the last 23 years, the Shade Tree Commission has planted approximately 870 trees in the community and maintained street trees. Additionally, it has received the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA designation for 26 consecutive years. The Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission strives to encourage street tree plantings as well as plantings in yards, parks, and public places, as trees retain large volumes of rainfall, thereby reducing and cleansing runoff. They also increase property values, reduce air pollution, and lower noise levels. Manageable storm water runoff results

and more. Winterfest chair Valerie Hacker estimated that approximately 10 percent of the vendors offer direct sales items, while the rest will have handmade products. Local Boy Scouts will be selling fresh evergreen wreaths, and a book fair will offer titles for adults and for children and youths in preschool through middle school. Admission to Winterfest is free. Parking is available in the middle and high school lots, and a free shuttle service will be available to transport attendees from the high school lot to the middle school and back. Santa Claus will visit the school from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other children’s activities will include face painting and a craft. Plus, a photo booth complete with holiday-themed props will be set up for people to take selfies. Food options will include chicken corn soup, pulled pork, hot dogs and sauerkraut, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, sandwiches, fruit salad, and beverages, as well as an assortment of homemade baked goods. Hacker shared that the increasingly popular “crodoughs” - a fresh baked cross between a croissant and a doughnut - will be back on the menu. “I’ve had to up my order every year, and I’ve ordered 200 for this year,” Hacker said. Aside from crodoughs, the baked goods for sale will be homemade by students in the EYMS life skills class with help from teachers and members of EYMS Student Council. Winterfest is a collaboration between parents, faculty, and students, with staff members making and selling products and students helping with setup and teardown, as well as delivering food orders to the standholders set up throughout the building. Hacker also recruits volunteers from the Eastern York High School National Honor Society. Each of the EYMS student sections creates a themed basket to be given away in a drawing at Winterfest. Themes for this year include chocolate, gift wrap, school supplies, coffee, outdoor fun, snowmen, and gift cards. The school store will also be open during Winterfest. Proceeds from the drawings, vendor space rentals, and food sales at Winterfest all benefit the EYMS PTSO and its efforts to fund student assemblies, field trips, special events, and more. “The 1940s Radio Hour from pg 1 definitely bittersweet, said cast member Beth Gable of the impending change. Beth and her husband, Kent Gable, are enjoying the opportunity to play opposite each other as girlfriend and boyfriend Connie Miller and B.J. Gibson. Plus, Beth’s father, Steve Sturgis, will portray the sometimes obnoxious and pompous stage manager Lou Cohn. Sturgis is no stranger to SSC, having performed in more than a dozen shows, including the company’s inaugural performance, “The Music Man, 10 years ago. “This show has a lot of 1940s big band music, which is the stuff that I grew up listening to and really like, said Sturgis. “The music is all done well with tight harmony, and it’s a lot of fun to sing. If you’re singing music you enjoy, it’ll come across to the audience. Gene Ellis, who will play WOV station manager Clifton Feddington, agreed and emphasized that the outstanding quality

Annual Bazaar Will Now Include Vendors By Dayna M. Reidenouer

A number of women, incluing pastor Carlene Wolf, from Washington Boro United Methodist Church (UMC), 1964 Water St., Washington Boro, are known as the congregation’s mission and nurture committee. “We organize events and fundraisers that support our local and foreign missions and support the church and our local community,” said committee member Lori Gee. “The other thing you can identify these women as is the best cooks in Washington Boro, and I don’t live in Washington Boro,” Wolf said with a laugh. The committee members, along with other members of the church, will focus their talents on preparing baked goods, soups, and other foods for the church’s annual Christmas bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the kitchen will offer breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, beef barbecue,

grilled cheese sandwiches, and freshly fried cinnamon breadsticks. Soup varieties will include chicken corn, beef vegetable, French onion, and tomato prepared following a recipe from a Civil War-era cookbook. The soups may be purchased in small quantities or in quarts. Preorders for quarts of soup will be appreciated, and folks may contact committee member Tabetha Young at 717-341-7783 or jty@embarqmail.com to place orders. The baked goods table is slated to include buckeye candy, sweet breads, pies, cookies, fudge, and more. “You never know what people will bring,” observed committee member Petra King. The bazaar itself will look a bit different than it has in previous years. “We’re trying something new this year,” committee member Diana Boswa remarked. “Rather than asking people to donate things (to sell), we’re

bringing in vendors.” The vendors will sell crafts, jewelry, cookware and other kitchen supplies, clothing, books, totes, and handbags. There will also be a white elephant table. Santa Claus will visit the bazaar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He will pose for photos and give children candy canes and small gifts.

Proceeds from the bazaar will go to the congregation’s general missions efforts. The community is also invited to attend the Washington Boro UMC’s Advent festival on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m. Originally, the festival was started as a celebration while church members worked together to decorate the sanctuary and other parts of the building for Christmas. Now that a church member has claimed that task, all that remains of the festival is the celebration. Thus, on Nov. 24, festival attendees may partake

of a baked potato bar and make a Christmas craft. There is no charge to attend, but folks are asked to register by calling the church at 717-684-9309 or emailing Wolf at pastorwashingtonboroumc@ comcast.net. Other holiday events on the congregation’s calendar include a children’s Christmas cantata on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 10:30 a.m.; Christmas caroling at area homes and health care facilities on Sunday, Dec. 16, at a time to be announced; and a Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. on

November 21, 2018 - 5

Monday, Dec. 24. All are welcome to participate. Folks may also attend Sunday school at 9:15 a.m. and worship services at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. A nursery is available. “We have a lot of fun when we do stuff. We’re a fun and friendly church,” Boswa said. “We’re small, but when there’s a need, we pull together to meet that need.” To learn more about the church, readers may visit www.washingtonboro umc.com.
