Auxiliary To Host Craft Show
COLUMBIA - HELLAM - WRIGHTSVILLE
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The women’s auxiliary of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, has been offering holiday shopping opportunities since 1995. The group’s 25th annual Christmas craft show and sale will feature more than 70 vendors and will take place at the church on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Event coordinator Jean Marconi stated that inclusion in the show is restricted to noncommercial vendors, and she tries not to duplicate crafts. For example, while there will be several jewelry vendors, the components, shapes, and designs of their creations are different. Along with jewelry, the types of items offered at the show will include stained glass, wooden ornaments, baskets from Africa, handwoven towels, handmade soaps, alpaca items, Christmas décor, puzzle balls, rustic crafts, Old World Santas, potpourri and other floral products, doll beds and clothing, dog scarves, etched glass, pottery, quilted linens, feather trees, painted slates and glassware, hair accessories, nut butters, clay flowers, and more. The only exception to the handmade rule is made for the Lancaster Public Library, which sells new and used books in one of the church’s classrooms. The craft show will fill seven classrooms, two hallways, two lobbies, and the gymnasium. Vendors will be set up on both the first and second floors of the church. The facility

Attendance at the show typically reaches 2,000 people, and the waiting list for vendors contains 235 names. Marconi begins accepting vendor applications each year in June. “Longtime vendors get the first invitations,” Marconi said. “We also have a waiting list for the gym.” New vendors start out in the hallways before moving into a classroom and eventually into the gymnasium as the
spaces become available. “You have to pay your dues,” said stained glass maker and auxiliary member Barbara Keen. Marconi noted that the café area has been enlarged this year to make room for people to sit down and enjoy snacks or a meal. Members of the parish will sell breakfast sandwiches, chicken corn soup, chili, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, tuna salad sandwiches, walking tacos, doughnuts, soda, and coffee. The proceeds from the food sales will be split between the parish and the auxiliary. Additionally, a baked goods table and a

Craft table coordinator Darlene Yourgal said she seeks out donations of handmade items from parishioners, and auxiliary members contribute as well. Auxiliary president Ann Marie Dumm shared that the craft show and sale facilitates fellowship and camaraderie among women in the parish. The event also provides funds for the group to distribute locally. The auxiliary purchases confirmation and First Communion gifts for parish members, awards two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the parish each year, contributes to community meals and church building repairs, donates to the American Cancer Society, and purchases Christmas gifts for Conestoga View residents. The auxiliary has also held a baby shower for A Woman’s Concern. To learn more about the craft show and sale, readers may call Marconi at 717-8722193 and leave a message. A beloved holiday favorite, the tale follows embittered Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Brayton Alkinburgh, as he clings to his miserly ways and declares the joys of Christmas to be “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge’s disheartened mentality is shaken up through the course of several events, including encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - portrayed by Emma Witman, Anastasia Hess, and Teresa Moore, respectively. Zac Snyder will play Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s employee. “I get to be the happiness of the show and spread cheer with my family,” said Zac, who lives in Columbia and attends Lancaster Catholic High School. This will be his fifth performance with SSC. Mrs. Cratchit will be portrayed by Julia Bono, who is making her SSC debut. “I love this show, and I was really interested in playing a character who is a lot older than me and who has kids,” shared Julia, a Lampeter resident and student at Lancaster Country Day School. “I think it’s really special that it’s a cast of all kids. We all get along really well, and we’re having a lot of fun with this show,” added Julia. The cast includes children ages 5 to 18 from throughout Lancaster and York counties. Additional cast members include Grayson Marz as Isabella, Teddy Best as Tiny

this event has been a family tradition for years,” noted Smith. “The kids love the animals; they are a fan favorite.” More than 80 people from SGCC are involved in putting together the Road to Bethlehem, and a rehearsal is held on the day of the event. “We have volunteers that have been working with us for years, often in the same scene, so our actors are seasoned veterans,” Smith said. All of the efforts are worth it in the eyes of the organizers, whose vision is to share the truth and love of Jesus Christ with friends and neighbors. “His love is great and far reaching, and we seek only to be an extension of that love,” said Smith. To learn more about the Road to Bethlehem, readers may visit www.susquehanna grace.org or call the church at 717-252-1233.

Attendees will be directed to drive up a luminaria-lit drive while seasonal music plays in the background. “This event is unique in that you choose how you will enjoy the event,” explained Smith. “We have visitors that drive through only. We have visitors that park their cars and walk a luminaria-lit path past the scenes. This is a favorite for my young daughter, who likes seeing the animals up close.” Guests are also welcome to go inside SGCC to enjoy homemade treats and musical performances in the sanctuary. This year’s musicians include harpist Emily Marini Aziza, Crossroads Connected 2.0 Band, and the Josh Smith Band. The jolly old elf himself with be on hand to interact with diners and pose for pictures at the annual Breakfast With Santa event hosted by Boy Scout Troop 64 on Saturday, Dec. 7. The breakfast will be held at Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, and guests may drop by any time between 8 and 11 a.m. For an admission fee, guests will be offered a meal containing pancakes, bacon and other breakfast meats, scrambled eggs, apples, coffee, tea, juice, and milk. Eggnog toasts will be held every hour and will be accompanied with the singing of carols. Additionally, youngsters may make crafts and cards for Marines, there will be a pancake-eating contest with Santa Claus, and prizes will be awarded to the wearers of ugly Christmas sweaters. Pictures with Santa will also be available. The iconic character will pose with a backdrop and a Christmas tree so that participants will have photos suitable for holiday cards. A Santa Shop will be set up so that children may shop for Christmas gifts for their loved ones. Toys, candles, craft kits, lotions, tools, flashlights, pocketknives, and other items will be modestly priced. The Scouts will giftwrap purchases free of charge. “For $5 to $10, you can get something for everyone on your list,” said Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans.
In addition to her service with Troop 64, Evans is a member of the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) memorial council, and she has been instrumental in fostering the troop’s involvement with Wreaths Across America (WAA). On Dec. 7, the troop will accept donations for WAA, which strives to place a wreath on every veteran’s gravesite during the holiday season. The Scouts will also accept interment flags - the ones distributed to families after servicemembers’ funerals - as they are the only flags that are flown at the IGNC. “The flags will serve a greater purpose than collecting dust,” Evans suggested. Troop 64 also collects worn-out flags that are ready to be retired. The flags will be burned and placed in IGNC graves before deceased servicemembers are buried. “They’re in desperate need (of flags),” Evans said. “They’re opening a whole new section of the cemetery.” Proceeds from Breakfast With Santa will support Scouting activities, including monthly camping events. The troop is planning a high adventure trip to Canada’s Northern Tier in summer 2020. Multiple days of canoeing in Ontario will constitute the trip. Troop 64 currently has 25 members, and new members ages 11 to 18 are always welcome. The troop meets at Salem UCC every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. For more information about Troop 64, Breakfast With Santa, or how to donate flags, readers may call Evans at 717-572-3448.

Donations of dry pet food will be accepted at the Dec. 7 open house at Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. Inviting the public attend the event are (from left) Shari Sellers, Kate Kendall, executive director Melody Sanders, Nacomi Bissonnette, and Kristine Spangler. Sanders welcomes ongoing donations of pet food, and bags of food may be dropped off at the Pet Pantry at any time. The organization is not picky about food, as the donations are blended before being portioned in order to make it easier on animals’ digestive tracts. “I don’t care what size bag you give us, what brand you give us; I’ll take it all,” Sanders commented. For more information about the Pet Pantry and the open house, readers may email petpantryoflancaster@gmail.com or call 717-983-8878.
Shipley Energy recently announced a new division, Harmony Fuels, that will provide a carbon-neutral option for heating homes with heating oil and propane to residential customers from Maryland to Maine. For each gallon of heating oil or propane a customer purchases, Harmony Fuels will purchase the equivalent number of pounds of carbon offsets from certified green energy projects. Despite the purchase of carbon offsets, Harmony Fuels expects pricing to be equivalent to or lower than the average consumer cost of heating oil and propane. “Consumers are increasingly aware of the impact they have on the environment, and they want to be responsible,” said Steven Downey, president of Harmony Fuels. “With the launch of Harmony Fuels, we are excited to offer our customers a carbon-neutral option as a step toward reducing our collective carbon footprint.” Harmony Fuels was created to provide customers with the energy needed to heat
their homes in a way that is less harmful to the environment. Harmony Fuels will deliver standard low or ultra-low sulfur heating oil and propane to customers to use, and Harmony Fuels will purchase the equivalent number of carbon offsets, helping to fund projects designed to lead to cleaner air and lower overall carbon emissions. Customers will select the specific type of project that their specific carbon offsets will come from (solar, wind, landfill methane recapture, livestock methane capture, fugitive emissions capture, and others). Harmony Fuels will also provide the project names, location, and description for consumers to see. The purchases will be powered by Cloverly, a platform for the purchase of certified carbon offsets. Harmony Fuels will leverage the existing delivery partners of its sister company, Smart Touch Energy. For additional information, readers may visit www.harmonyfuels.com.

impact on Sanders and the Pet Pantry. Sanders noted that the Pet Pantry has gone through a growth spurt in the last year. The Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program has flourished, and a grant has made it possible for the mobile surgical trailer to go into the community to host TNR clinics. Online scheduling for vaccine clinics is available at www.petpantrylc.org, and online scheduling will soon be offered for spay/neuter appointments. Readers may also visit the website through Friday, Dec. 6, to sponsor bulbs for the “Light the Way to Meet the Need” fundraiser.

It has been nearly 10 years since Melody Sanders founded the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. The organization has flourished, moving from a rented storage unit to its own facility at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, and operating a mobile surgical trailer that enables veterinarians to perform neuter and spay services in remote locations. “It totally blows my mind on all this,” Sanders marveled. “It’s an idea we brought to the public, and they support us.” While Sanders dreams about buying a farm for the Pet Pantry, where pets would have room to run and interact with potential adoptive families, she is happy to show off the current facility. An open house on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will enable community members to tour the building, see the “state of the heart” surgical suite, meet staff members and volunteers, and interact with adoptable dogs and cats. “We want people to come out and be educated on what we do here and how we meet the needs of the community,” Sanders said. Guests are invited to bring dry pet food with them to the open house. While both dog food and cat food are needed, the Pet Pantry is currently experiencing a shortage of cat food. About 3,000 pounds of cat food is distributed each month, Sanders said, although she added that she
typically underestimates how much food is given to households that would otherwise not be able to afford to keep their pets. The Pet Pantry is currently supporting 325 households, with distribution locations in Gap and Lancaster city, as well as at its headquarters. “We’re helping people become responsible owners,” Sanders commented, noting that program participants are required to have their pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Dogs must be licensed in accordance with state law. Well-behaved pets may be brought to the open house, as photographs with Santa Claus will be available for a small fee. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees may shop the thrift store, which will offer pet-themed Christmas gifts. Jewelry and “12 Dogs of Christmas” dog treats will be for sale as well. At 6 p.m., the lights adorning the building’s exterior will officially be turned on for the season. Individuals may sponsor bulbs as part of the “Light the Way to Meet the Need” fundraiser. Additionally, attendees may take home empty water bottles to fill with dimes for the Pet Pantry. The bottles are labeled with “Charlie’s One Dime at a Time” in memory of the late Charlie MacMullen, who volunteered at the Pet Pantry until his death two years ago. Sanders’ last memory of MacMullen is of him giving her a water bottle filled with dimes. While the contents of each bottle - typically between $11 and $12 - may not seem to go far individually, MacMullen’s legacy has made a lasting
