Students from Taylor Middle School in Columbia recently launched a student-run Mobile Market. As a part of an ongoing nutritional program offered through a partnership of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Columbia Borough School District, the market offered free produce to students and their families on a biweekly basis in September and October. The Mobile Market served as a fullcircle completion of the students’ farm-to-school experience through the program, which also included in-classroom taste testing of fresh vegetables and field trips to Heritage Creek Farm Camp and Education Center. The produce provided at the Mobile Market was first planted and harvested by the students at Heritage Creek Farm Camp and Education Center during the program’s scheduled field trips. The goal of the experience is to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among fifth- and

sixth-grade students. To reach that goal, the program strives to help students understand what healthy foods are, where they come from, how to cook them, and how to obtain them. The program, which is in its fourth year, was developed and funded by CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, a Lancaster-based nonprofit. Over the past four years, more than 500 students have been involved in some aspect of the nutritional program. Pictured on front: Taylor Middle School students Loudon Rupp (front), Tyerre Harrington (back, left), and Alivia Urban (back, center) and education coordinator Lizzy Krajan Pardo pack grocery bags for a student-run Mobile Market. The market is part of an ongoing nutritional program offered by CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Columbia Borough School District.

150 people in over 22 school districts throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and York areas, which, of course, is just huge. Since Convert to Code has now hosted numerous workshops and established more connections throughout the local area, Weaver and Martin revisited the idea of hosting a hackathon this year. “We felt we had enough momentum as an organization to go through with it, Weaver said. “I always liked the idea of a Christmas- or holiday-themed hackathon. Individuals who are interested in volunteering with Convert to Code may email converttocode@gmail.com. “We are always in need of new teachers and teacher assistants for our monthly workshops (and) connections to local groups and organizations who can help spread awareness, noted Weaver.

Hackathon from pg 1 Weaver, who founded Convert to Code with Danae Martin, explained it as a coding marathon where a person may convert his or her ideas and passions into code and build whatever they wish. Hack, by definition, means “to achieve novel and clever outcomes by creatively overcoming limitations of software systems. Organizers encourage anyone who is interested to attend, whether they are experienced coders or have never seen a line of code. Code mentors, introductory workshops, and code starter packs will be available for anyone just starting out. Attendees should bring a laptop (not a tablet), a charger, and snacks, and they should be ready to use their imagination. When Weaver first approached Martin about starting Convert to Code, he wanted to host hackathon events throughout the year. “However, we quickly learned that we would be able to better serve the community by instead hosting free workshops to expose our participants to coding and computer science, said Weaver. Weaver and Martin, who both graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2017, began hosting free computer programming workshops for the community in 2017. The coding mentors and instructors at all of the Convert to Code workshops are all local software engineers and developers who volunteer their time. “To see some wild idea you have begin to materialize and turn from an abstract idea into a concrete organization is honestly a blessing, shared Weaver. “Being able to sit down and look at our numbers for our first year, we reached over

Using PowerPoint to illustrate his talk, Spero will unveil the story of a group of ragtag frontiersmen that launched Native American tactics of warfare on the largest ever peace-keeping assembly of British and Native American leaders. The frontiersmen, known as the Black Boys because they dressed as Native Americans and smeared their faces with charcoal, foiled the peace effort and thereby became part of the interwoven struggles to determine whose independence would prevail on the American frontier - the British, Native

Greater York Dance will present “The Hip Nut” on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. A cast of more than 75 people will perform in the show. “The Hip Nut,” a multicultural adaptation of “The Nutcracker,” takes place in two acts and tells the story of a Christmas Eve in modern-day scenes. Clara, the featured girl, is later approached by a group of gangsters and the Nutcracker comes to chase the gangsters away. After arriving home, she dreams about the Nutcracker again while she enjoys a World Holiday Festival and meets many multicultural friends. Students of Greater York Dance and trained and untrained dancers from the greater York community complete the cast. Also represented are the William Penn Performing Arts Institute, First Capital Drumline, and other groups.

Lauren Wallace, an 11th-grade student at York Suburban High School, will play the lead role of Clara. She has taken classes in various genres and currently studies hip-hop and jazz three days a week at Greater York Dance. Tradition from pg 1 Annual Art Show To Fill Railroad Station By Chelsea Peifer

For traditional tinsmith Karen Hurd, the number of ideas she has for artwork outweighs the hours in a day. “It’s endless what you can do with tin. There are so many ideas in my head that I’ll have to live another two or three lifetimes to try them all,” said Hurd, who resides in Quarryville. Bringing ideas to life through artwork is one of life’s greatest joys for Hurd, who said that whenever she steps into her workshop it makes her feel like saying, “I’m home!” “It’s where I belong,” shared Hurd. Hurd has been creating tin wares for decades, and some of her tin ornaments were even used in the White House holiday décor during the Clinton presidency - an opportunity that presented itself after her work was displayed at the American Folk Museum in New York City. Hurd will be among the local and regional artists exhibiting original wares at the 2018 Christmas Folk Art Show at the Manheim Historical Society Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. The annual show is set to take place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Admission is free, and complimentary holiday refreshments will be available. In addition to Hurd, the exhibitors and their crafts will include Cynthia Baker, handwoven textiles, felt hats, and wool applique; Dan Barthold, pen and ink illustrations; Mike Brown, paper mache and chalkware folk art; Madeline Erickson, German stars and feather trees; Bob and Sally Hughes, pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Ed and Lois Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Doug Shaw, wood carvings.

Primitive wild fowl carvings, tinware, paper mache and chalkware, and pen and ink drawings are just a small sampling of the works that will be for sale by local and regional artists at the 2018 Christmas Folk Art Show in Manheim on Dec. 14 and 15. Many of the artists have devoted followers who faithfully seek out the one-of-a-kind, original pieces that are available at the annual show. Last year’s show drew people from seven states, and Shaw recalled a long line stretching down the block on opening day as folks waited for the doors to open. “It was miserably cold out, but they were glad to wait,” Shaw remarked. Ed Pfoutz, who organized the inaugural show back in 1996 with the late Jack Ritter, said that although the show itself cannot expand due to the space limitations of the railroad station, attendance continues to soar higher and higher each year. “We had no idea it would keep going this long. It was just something that we wanted to try,” shared Pfoutz, who creates carvings primarily out of reclaimed wood. A duck hunter, Pfoutz began dabbling in wood carving as a way to save money on expensive duck decoys by making his own, and he later branched out into fine art as well. His wife, Lois, helps with painting. “She’s also my inspiration,” Pfoutz noted. Wooden geese, crows, and ravens are some of the Pfoutzes’ bestsellers, and the couple will be introducing angels made from driftwood at this year’s show. The show’s organizers and

exhibitors consider the railroad station, which was originally constructed in 1881 and renovated in recent years by the Manheim Historical Society, to be an ideal setting for the event, describing the atmosphere as warm and friendly. In addition to perusing the art show, attendees may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. Glassblowing demonstrations will take place at Stiegel, and a variety of handcrafted glass will be available to purchase. For more details on the Christmas Folk Art Show, readers may call Jim Murphy at 717584-5576. Pictured on front:

release an online survey in the coming months and canvass in the borough in order to gain as much community feedback as possible. Goropoulos emphasized that the goal of the partnership is not for CHI St. Joseph’s Children’s Health to do it all, but for the market to eventually become a thriving, community-led effort once again. A history of the market on www.columbiamarkethouse.com states that the building was originally constructed in the late 1800s with funding by the municipality, and it began serving as an active community farmers market in 1869. Regular operations ended in 1994, and the market reopened in 2005 before closing again in late December 2017. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health began operating the Columbia Dental Center, 401 Locust St., in 2016 to serve children and families with or without insurance. Plans were announced in July 2018 for the organization to open the St. John Neumann School for Children and Families in 2020 at the same location. The school will serve children ages six weeks to 5 years, and part of its aim is to increase access to professional and affordable child care in Columbia Borough. launched approximately one and a half years ago by CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, had proposed a partnership with the borough to restore and revitalize the market house and entered into a management agreement with the borough on Nov. 12, according to Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health. Restoring and revitalizing the Columbia Market House fit well with Healthy Columbia’s goal of expanding fresh food access in the area. Goropoulos said that an official reopening date for the market has not been set, but planners are hopeful that the market will be ready to serve the public by the spring or summer of 2019. Proposed renovations for the property include repairs to the brick floor, upgrades to the electrical system and bathrooms, and the addition of a heating and cooling system. Once renovations have been completed, Goropoulos said the space will include anywhere from nine to 20 stands, along with a permanent 40-seat restaurant space. The design for the restaurant is still being finalized, but Goropoulos said the eatery will aim to be unique in its approach. The market will likely be open two days a week, while the restaurant will be open five days. Hours of operation and types of vendors may be modified to accommodate community interest. Tabor Receives Reaccreditation Tabor Community Services recently achieved national reaccreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA) for the fifth consecutive time. Organizations pursue accreditation to demonstrate the implementation of best practice standards in the field of human services. COA evaluated all aspects of Tabor’s programs, services, management, and administration. Tabor has been accredited since 1998. COA accreditation is an objective, independent validation of an agency’s performance. The process involves a detailed review and analysis of

an organization’s administration, management, and service delivery functions as compared to international standards of best practice. The standards driving accreditation are designed to ensure that services are well-coordinated, culturally competent, evidencebased, outcomes-oriented, and provided by a skilled and supported workforce. To achieve COA reaccreditation, Tabor first provided written evidence of compliance with the COA standards. After that, a group of specially trained volunteer peer reviewers confirmed adherence to

these standards during a series of on-site interviews with trustees, staff, and clients. Based on their findings, COA’s volunteer-based Accreditation Commission voted that Tabor Community Services had successfully met the criteria for reaccreditation. For the past 50 years, Tabor has been helping clients learn how to meet their housing and financial challenges, rebuild their lives, and contribute to the strength of the Lancaster community in the process. Tabor’s comprehensive array of programs and services include rapid re-housing for those

experiencing homelessness, rental counseling to prevent homelessness, transitioning sheltered persons to permanent housing, supportive housing, budget counseling, financial literacy education, consumer credit counseling, firsttime home-buyer counseling, default mortgage counseling, counseling to achieve financial self-sufficiency, and matched savings accounts to help lowincome families save for purchasing assets such as a home or education. For more information about Tabor, readers may visit www.tabornet.org.

CAHS To Host Candlelight Christmas By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Conestoga resident Linda Funk became interested in the process of spinning fibers into yarn thanks to family connections. Her husband’s grandfather had pieces of a spinning wheel in his attic, but after the younger man fished it out and assembled it, they discovered that a few pieces were missing. The wheel was relegated to a corner, where it sat for years. Then, while Funk was visiting historic Jamestown, she saw a woman using a spinning wheel and struck up a conversation. The woman referred Funk to Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she connected with Bill Mast, who made the missing parts, got the wheel functioning, and taught Funk the basic spinning techniques. Funk went home and began woolgathering. That is, she went into the fields where she had pastured sheep and collected the pieces that fell off the animals following shearing. Then she spun her first yarn. “It was the most awful stuff,” Funk recalled with a rueful laugh. Funk bought prepared fiber and soon learned to spin yarn she liked. Meanwhile, she joined the board of the fledgling Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS). “When (the museum) first opened, everybody on the board was going to do something, so I volunteered to spin,” Funk said. “I sat on the porch of the Atkinson House and later on the second floor of the Harnish House because they didn’t have this,” she added, gesturing to the row of workshops in the museum that highlight fiber arts, tinsmithing, pottery, and other practical arts. “There is so much history in here. If you want to start collecting, this is the place to come to see what you don’t have because we have it.” Funk now owns spinning wheels made in Lancaster County in 1802 and 1808 by S. Humes. When re-enacting, she dresses to match in garb worn in the very early 1800s, but during demonstrations at CAHS events, she spins colored fibers so visitors are not confused by the cream-colored drive bands on her wheels. Members of the public may observe Funk and other artisans in action during the Early American Candlelight Christmas event that will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the museum,

51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. The paths among the buildings on the site will be lighted by lanterns and luminarias. The structures themselves will be decorated in the style of a mid-19th-century Pennsylvania German Christmas. “Technically, before the Civil War, there would have been practically nothing (in the way of Christmas decorations),” said CAHS curator Ken Hoak. “Only the fancy Germans celebrated Christmas. After the Civil War, Christmas became a religious holiday and a secular holiday.” Until sometime in the 20th century, only Episcopalians, German Lutherans, German Reformed, and Moravians celebrated Christmas. Thus, Christmas would not have been observed in the log house built for the Quaker Atkinsons. The same would have been true of the Harnish House, which was the home of Mennonites. Hoak noted that both structures were built by Germans. The Atkinson House has the same floor plan as the Hans Herr House in Willow Street, and the Harnish House is one of only six Sweitzer bank houses in existence in Lancaster and Berks counties today. “It’s pure Germanic architecture. There are no stairs to the

Conestoga Area Historical Society member Linda Funk will demonstrate spinning and discuss fiber arts during the society’s Early American Candlelight Christmas event on Dec. 8. upper level,” Hoak said, adding that the design would have made moving between floors uncomfortable in bad weather. During the Dec. 8 event, a punch and cookie reception will be held in Gundel Hall, where seasonal music will be performed by pianist Sharon Gantz, vocalists Jack and Kendra Hamlett, and the Manor Singers from Penn Manor

High School. At 9 p.m., a drawing will be held for a Pennsylvania black powder long rifle. Opportunities to win will be available until right before the drawing. Additionally, copies of several historical maps will be offered for sale during the event. For more information about the event, readers may call the historical society at 717-872-1699.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance.
