OnSaturday, Dec. 17, you’re invited to remember those who’ve served our country by helping to place wreaths in cemeteries in the Wrightsville area through Wreaths Across America. The event will begin in Fairview Cemetery, 600 Hellam St., Wrightsville, at noon.

“Everybody will gather for a short ceremony,” said Phil Lehman, president of the Wrightsville Cemetery Association and event organizer. “We’ll start with the posting of the colors and the national anthem by members of the Twin Rose Community Band, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.” Lehman plans to speak briefly about Wreaths Across America,a national nonprofit organization with a simple mission: “Remember, honor, teach.” State Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill will also

speak, and wreaths will be presented for each branch of service as well as in honor of prisoners of war. The ceremony will conclude with a rifle salute and the playing of taps. Volunteers will then disperse to place wreaths on graves throughout Fairview Cemetery, Mount Pisgah Cemetery and Union Cemetery.

Members of the Wrightsville American Legion Post 469 will lead volunteers at Mount Pisgah Cemetery, located on the 200 block of Mulberry Street, and representatives from Historic Wrightsville Inc. will direct the effort at Union Cemetery on the 300 block of Chestnut Street.

Although families of veterans are coming to lay some wreaths, volunteers are needed to complete the project, Lehman said, noting that there are about 400 wreaths to distribute.

“We’re asking schools, sports teams and community members to come

out and help,” he said. “This event is a way to remember our veterans and what they have done for the people in this community.”

The wreaths will stay on the graves until Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, when volunteers will also be needed for cleanup. People should meet at Fairview Cemetery at 11 a.m. to help with cleanup.

On Dec. 17, there will be no parking on the main cemetery road after 10:30 a.m., and the main entry at Hellam Street will be closed to traffic at 10:30 a.m. All street parking will be available, except for the south side of the 600 block of Hellam Street, which will be reserved for the speaker, first responders and members of the Hellam Township Police Department.

For more information on Wreaths Across America in Wrightsville, call Lehman at 717-992-2042.

When the Twin Rose Community Band presents a Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 11, audiences can expect to be entertained with a variety of music, said Kim Blank, who plays the flute and piccolo with the group. The concert will be held at Reich’s EC

Church, 338 Stackstown Road, Marietta, beginning at 2 p.m.

“We’ll do a mixture of different Christmas classics,” Blank stated, adding that the concert will offer a mix of secular and religious music.

“We’re playing ‘O Holy Night,’ Leroy Anderson’s ‘Sleigh Ride’ and ‘Patapan.’ We’ll also do a sing-along medley.”

A Holiday Open House will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. The event will feature bake oven demonstrations, s’mores, popcorn stringing and luminarias. Guided history presentations will start on the half-hour. The event is free and open to the community.

The Zimmerman Center “Old Times” Lecture Series will present “History of the Susquehanna River” by Jeri Jones at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Jones will use evidence of volcanoes, continental collisions, monumental floods, and ancient creatures found in the rocks in and along the Susquehanna River to take attendees on a geologic journey through eons of time, describing the events that led the Susquehanna to become such a wonder of nature.

There is a cost to attend, and preregistration is required. Copies of Jones’ book “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail” will be available for sale.

Author To Be Featured At Event

Eucabeth Odhiambo will be a featured author at the Gifts That Give Hope event on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Her book, “She Persisted: Wangari Maathai,” tells the story of Wangari Maathai, who in 2004 became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. “She Persisted: Wangari Maathai” is part of the “She Persisted” children’s chapter book series created by Chelsea Clinton.

Amid resistance, Maathai planted millions of trees that changed the landscape of Kenya and the world. She founded the Green Belt Movement and mobilized friends, family, and even strangers to help her plant trees and respect the environment.

Copies of Odhiambo’s books will be available for purchase and signing. For more on her work and books, visit www.bethriwa.com.

The band is composed of between 25 and 35 people, who range in age from high school students to senior citizens. “We come from all different backgrounds, and we’re always looking for musicians,” Blank commented. “We are open to anybody who can play.”

George Bradshaw has been conducting the band since 1995, and the group’s roots date back much further. “This band has been around since the late 1800s,” Blank remarked. “It started as the Long Level Cornet Band. Then it was the Long Level Band and the Columbia VFW Band.” When the band outgrew the rehearsal space at the VFW, it moved rehearsals to Wrightsville, where the group still practices at Trinity Lutheran Church. The move also prompted the band to change its name to Twin Rose Community Band to reflect its presence in Lancaster and York counties.

During the winter months,

the band performs concerts at local churches. It has also performed at area retirement communities. “We do a lot of outdoor concerts in the summer in parks or for community events,” Blank shared, noting that the group plays annually for the Wrightsville Fourth of July festivities.

Although the Christmas concert is free, an offering will be collected to benefit the band. “We’ll use the money to purchase new music,” Blank said.

She encourages everyone to come to the concert, adding, “It’s just a fun time to put yourself in the Christmas spirit and also to remember the true meaning of Christmas. Everybody’s welcome.”

For more information on the Twin Rose Community Band, visit https://twin rose.bravesites.com or search for the band on Facebook. For more information on the Christmas concert, call 717-426-1339.

City (in New York City),” said Sonia Moll, who plays Mimi Marquez. “I think people can expect to see a story come to life and experience the value of love and life through not only the story itself but by each character and member of the show.”

Sean Deffley, who portrays Mark Cohen, agreed, adding, “If you’ve never seen ‘Rent,’ you’re in for a real treat.

It’s a fast-paced rock opera with some of the most iconic musical theater songs of all time. It will have you jamming out in your seat one minute and then pulling at your heart

Public Invited To Christmas Light Show

The Christmas Spirit Light Show, a light display that residents of Lancaster and surrounding counties can enjoy from the comfort of their vehicles, opened on Nov. 25 at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

Visitors to the light show will journey through a 1-mile track surrounded by hundreds of thousands of colorchanging lights, animated and dancing in harmony to Christmas classics.

The show will run through Saturday, Dec. 31. It is open on Sundays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Guests can enter the light

show on Prince Street through the south entrance into the stadium. The show takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to drive through, and food and beverage items along with holiday merchandise will be available for purchase at the entrance to the show.

Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Christmas Spirit Light Show is given to a different nonprofit organization. This year, the selected charity is Power Packs Projects, an organization whose mission is to fight hunger among students across Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.christmasspiritlight shows.com.

strings the next.”

The show opens on Christmas Eve and takes audiences through a year in the lives of its characters. It makes a great Christmas show, Deffley stated. “For me, Christmas is a time of reflection on the previous year, a time to really appreciate life and be thankful for what we have,” he remarked. “That theme is ever-present in ‘Rent.’ It’s a celebration, so to speak, of all the blessings and tragedies that a single year of our lives can hold. It also speaks to the idea of loving and supporting your family, whether it be the one you were born with, or, like the characters in the show, the one you’ve chosen.”

Written by Jonathan Larson, “Rent” debuted almost 30 years ago, but the story has a timeless appeal, said Moll. “It’s relevant still today because it shows the struggles of anyone ... trying to figure out where they

belong and trying to create and find a legacy to leave behind,” she commented.

“We all somewhere deep down struggle at times to find a place to fit in and to belong.”

Deffley noted that “Rent” offers audiences an important message. “‘Rent’ is all about love, inclusivity and acceptance,” he said. “It’s been more than 25 years since the show premiered, and as a society, we’re still working toward all of that. Any chance we get to tell a story as poignant as ‘Rent,’ even on a small stage like ours, is an opportunity to spread love and understanding into the world.”

“Rent” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16; at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17; and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 11 and 18. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https://susquehannastage.com.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating Tips Offered

The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor network, the key to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses within a budget, he offered several pointers.

Start by finding a decor focal point. Identify the property’s most attractive features - a porch, the front door, some shrubs or a perfect treeand focus attention there with garlands, greenery and lights.

Then complete the look by enhancing other areas of the property. Outline windows or

rooflines with lights or tuck hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.

Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more attractive, safer and more cost-effective.

Members of the Christmas Decor Franchise Network have been decorating homes and businesses since 1986 and now create outdoor holiday displays in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada each holiday season. For more information about Christmas Decor, contact Brenneman at 717318-1941 or christmasdecor oflancaster@gmail.com, or visit www.christmasdecor.net.

Medical Students Win Scholarships

Five area students were selected as recipients of the 2022 Lancaster Medical Society Foundation scholarship awards. The competitive process, which makes selections based on character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need, included submissions from applicants throughout Lancaster County. As part of the application, students were required to write an essay explaining why they have chosen to pursue a career in medicine. The selection committee chose the awardees through a blind review process.

This year’s recipients are Launick Saint-Fort of Ephrata, Nicole Hanselman of Manheim, Hannah Kuntz from Elizabethtown, Rhea Sullivan from Landisville and Kevin Chao of Lancaster.

Saint-Fort, a trauma research coordinator, graduate of Penn State Berks and firstyear medical student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. For Saint-Fort, whose younger years were spent as a child slave in Haiti, medical school and a potential career as a physician were beyond her wildest dreams. She noted that in childhood, she contracted various illnesses that could have been prevented with quality medical care, which was not available to her.

Hanselman, an Elmira College graduate and research specialist currently in her first year at Saint James School of Medicine in Illinois, received a $3,500 award. She explained

that her passion to pursue medicine was conceived in a small orphanage in Vietnam, where she lived after losing her parents and oldest sister. Placed in the orphanage at age 7, Hanselman was assigned to care for the sickest babies, but could only do so much to ease their pain and suffering.

Kuntz, a former medical assistant with AmeriCorps and a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, is a first-year student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. Her passion for medicine was fostered through her volunteer experiences working with underserved populations in Lancaster city and later in Rochester, N.Y.

Sullivan, a fourth-year M.D. and Ph.D. student at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College, shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine came after experiences she

had in college, including witnessing the deaths of both a fellow college student and then a neighbor as a result of addiction.

Chao, a former medical scribe and volunteer smoking cessation counselor, is a Saint Joseph’s University (formerly University of the Sciences) graduate and second-year student at Drexel University College of Medicine. Chao’s choice to pursue medicine grew from childhood experiences with the health care system. Born with a heart abnormality that was incredibly difficult to manage, he credits his parents, pediatrician and cardiologist for their tireless care, giving him a life that he would not otherwise have had.

Chao, Kuntz and Sullivan were all awarded $2,000 scholarships.

Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.

The scholarship foundation is supported by the Lancaster County medical community, through hospitals and health systems, group practices, indi-

vidual medical society members, local businesses and Lancaster-area residents.

Since its inception, more than $282,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.

Strickler Earns Eagle Scout Award

Austin Strickler, a member of Troop 25 in East York, has earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest advancement rank in Scouts BSA. He received his award from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino during Troop 25’s Court of Honor on Oct. 25 at Yorkshire United Methodist Church (UMC). Austin is the son of Jody and Tim Strickler.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Austin transformed an overgrown, unused courtyard at Yorkshire UMC, the troop’s sponsoring organization, into a playground for the children of the Joyful Noise Preschool. The project required the removal of trees and shrubs, jackhammering a cement fountain and walkway, disposing of debris and excess dirt, installing fencing, and spreading mulch. The project took a total of 708 man-hours to complete.

Starting as a Tiger Cub, Austin has been a Scout for 10 years. Since crossing over to Troop 25, he has earned 27 merit badges and served as senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader, and librarian in the troop. He is also a member of Scouts BSA’s national honor society, the Order of the Arrow. Austin is currently a junior at Central York High School and is interested in studying astrophysics at college.

At the Court of Honor, Austin thanked his parents, his Scoutmaster, fellow Scouts, friends, and family members for their help in completing his project and his Eagle requirements. State Rep. Keith Gillespie sent Austin a Pennsylvania House Citation and a personal letter, and state Sen. Chris Gebhard sent a Pennsylvania Senate Citation. Representatives of the Marine Corps League and the National Society of the

Sons of the American Revolution attended the Court of Honor and presented Austin with a Good Citizenship Award and Certificate of Recognition. The new Eagle Scout also received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and an American flag that had flown over the United States Capitol in recognition of his achievement.

Scouts BSA Troop 25 meets at Yorkshire UMC, 125 Edgewood Road, York, on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall. For more information, visit https://troop25york.com/.
