“Story Time With Ms. Lisa” Podcast Launches By Chelsea Peifer

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The plaintive strains of “Silent Night” played on a harmonica filled the air as members of the Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association (MTWA) and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) placed ornaments on a small artificial evergreen tree on Dec. 4. Each of the more than 170 ornaments had been painstakingly carved and decorated by members of the two groups. “Some of them are so beautifully ornate. They really bring the spirit of Christmas,” commented Lauren Musser, corporate and community relationship manager for Hospice & Community Care (HCC). The ornaments are shaped See Woodcarvers pg 3

Hospice & Community Care staffers Kevin Frain (far right) and Lauren Musser (seated, right) accepted a Christmas tree stocked with ornaments for inpatient clients and their families from Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association and Lancaster County WoodCarvers representatives (continuing clockwise) Ruth Stetter, Clarence Kiehl, Mark Arbogast, Pete Kovarovic, and Rick Bledsoe.

Columbia Public Library director Lisa Greybill is a fixture not only at children’s programs at the library but as a beloved reader at countless community events from antique shows to the town tree lighting. In October, the Columbia Public Library launched its new “Story Time With Ms. Lisa” podcast series, so that children - and people of all ages - may listen to her reading whenever they would like. Fairy tales read by Greybill are the genre on the current podcast series, with titles such as “The Emperor’s New Clothes” by Hans Christian Andersen, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter, and “Rapunzel” by The Brothers Grimm. Greybill presents an opening script, reads the story, and then recommends additional book titles at the close. New releases are scheduled to be posted to www.columbiapublic See Podcast pg 6

It is developed and run by the Martin Library Teen Leadership Committee for high school students across York County. YES features career workshops designed to help teenagers understand why professionals pursue their vocations. YES also explores social justice issues and features a Young Adult author. Johnson works closely with the committee as the library’s teenager forum manager and was presented the awards at the conference. She received the Humanities in Action Award, a new Best Practices Award created in partnership with the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, as well as the David J. Roberts EXCEL Award. In addition to the awards for YES, Johnson accepted a 2019 Best Practices Award in the High School Category for the Pride Dance at Martin Library. The teenager-led event is going into its third year. In the School Age category,

LCPN Sets Dinner Distribution The 33rd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m. The project will distribute more than an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. No pre-screening is required. In addition to the distribution at the stadium, LCPN will partner with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, the Columbia

Lions, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for more than twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers. All are welcome to lend a hand. like mittens, Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas, evergreen trees, angels, birds, and snowmen, and there is even a Noah’s ark with a pair of delicately carved giraffes. The tree is located in the chaplains’ office of the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, near Mount Joy. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are managed during generally short-term stays before returning home. During December, HCC chaplains and social workers invite clients’ family members to choose ornaments from the tree as holiday keepsakes. “People are here, but the holidays are still happening around them,” Musser said. “This creates a sweet moment for them to get through this holiday season.” “(The ornaments are) a tangible expression of care that can be carried on by families,” chaplain Kevin Frain remarked. “The memories associated with an ornament may be painful, but (they are) meaningful.” This is the 11th consecutive year that the MTWA has given a decorated tree to HCC’s inpatient care facility and the third that LCWC has participated. The tradition was started by the late Bob Stampf, who was a founder of the MTWA, when the group members sought to share woodcarving with the community in an impactful way. HCC was suggested, as an MTWA member had a relative receiving care. MTWA member Ruth Stetter related that the ornaments went over so well that first year that when she went to pick up the empty tree, Musser joked that Stetter may have it only if she brought it back with more ornaments the following December. “It’s a good thing (to do),” Stetter said. “It makes you feel good to do this for folks.” MTWA member Mark Arbogast coordinates the ornament project and is also a member of the LCWC. When the MTWA, which has only about 10 members, could no longer create the necessary number of ornaments, Arbogast invited the 80-member LCWC to join the effort. “The Lancaster County WoodCarvers was very happy to jump in and help,” Arbogast said. Approximately half of the LCWC’s members contributed pieces, and both styles and intricacy vary. “The details of these pieces astound me every year,” Musser

Interested individuals may go to the website and click on “CPL Podcast and then select the episode of their choice to listen. “We had an unexpected surprise in that the teachers are playing it for their students, shared Greybill, referring to neighboring Park Elementary School. Columbia Public Library board member Robin Gamby said that the idea behind the current podcast series is to provide another opportunity to foster a love of reading in youths. “Listening to stories helps children imagine, enhances creativity, and makes them open to ideas and free thinking, she explained. Members of the Columbia Public Library board of directors are researching the possibility of a community podcast series that would cover topics such as health, estate planning, local history, credit, budgeting, recycling, and other subjects of interest to area residents. The Columbia Public Library has been serving the Columbia and surrounding communities at its current location since 1960. The board recognized in 2015 that the library needed renovations to bring the building to code compliance, provide handicapped accessibility, and update systems for energy efficiency. With the receipt of a substantial bequest, the board felt comfortable moving forward with a major renovation and expansion project. Through a capital campaign, approximately 69% of the funds needed were raised for the renovation and expansion of the library, which was completed in 2018. With the assistance of

architectural firm Reese, Lower, Patrick & Scott and contractor Caldwell Heckles & Egan, Columbia Public Library became a state-of-the-art facility. Many donors supported the library project with monetary and inkind donations, as well as the staff members and volunteers who made it possible. “It takes a village to complete a project like this, and our village stepped up, said Gamby, who served as chair of the capital campaign. The balance of the project costs was paid with a loan, which Gamby said has been paid down significantly over the past year with past and current bequests to the library. Now the board is focused on the task of funding the ongoing operations of the library. As with any nonprofit organization, the library relies on some government assistance, Gamby said, with approximately 39% of its operating budget coming from state, county, or municipal funds. However, the majority of the budget requires the support of benefactors through funding from estate bequests, room naming right donors, corporate donations, grants, and individual donors. “Support can come from so many different avenues, stated Gamby. “We encourage anyone that wishes to invest in their local library to contact us to sit down to discuss what works for them. The library’s current fundraising campaign, Champions Pledge, allows donors to pledge to support the library in several giving levels over the next five years in order to maximize their gifts. Philadelphia Insurance recently contributed $9,000 to Community Progress Council (CPC) to help fund the agency’s WrapAround Child Care program, which helps extend the workday for parents whose children are enrolled in CPC’s Head Start and Pre-K Counts programs. Absence of such before- and after-school programs is often a barrier for parents looking for sustainable employment in York County. The donation was made through an Educational Improve-

ment Tax Credit (EITC), which allows businesses to delegate money to approved nonprofit organizations as an alternative to the tax liability they have with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. CPC works with low- and moderate-income individuals and families of all ages to examine their current situations and determine how its programs best align with their needs. Programs include early childhood education through Head Start, Early Head

Start, Pre-K Counts and the Foster Grandparent Program; Workforce Development; housing and rental counseling, education and nutrition support through Women, Infants and Children (WIC); and services at community centers in York, Hanover and Lewisberry. To learn more about designating money to CPC through the EITC program, readers may call 717-846-4600, ext. 260, or email glindemuth@ yorkcpc.org.

beginning of 2020. However, this year, the town will be raising a newly created shoe thanks to the efforts of local resident Justin Hammers, owner of Northridge Repair. Dusman noted that Hammers donated his time to make a new shoe from fiberglass since the old one was in need of an upgrade. Prior to the countdown to midnight, organizers of First Night Hallam/Hellam will be giving away a large array of gift cards and announcing the silent auction winners. Attendees can receive a free ticket for gift card drawings by bringing items to donate to the Bell Socialization Services, a nonprofit organization based in York that offers mental health services, intellectual disability services, and shelter services. Items

needed include towels; washcloths; sheets; pillowcases; toothpaste and toothbrushes; shampoo; body wash; soap; hairbrushes and combs; razors; shaving cream; diapers of all sizes; underwear and socks for women, men, and children; and small appliances like toasters, coffee pots, and pots and pans. The items can be dropped off at the Hellam Fire Company or Trinity UCC during First Night Hallam/Hellam, and Bell will distribute them to local residents in need. “Think of the many things we use every day that these folks do not have,” Dusman remarked. “In the past, we have surpassed every collection we have done.” Readers with questions about First Night Hallam/Hellam may contact Dusman at 717-5774150 or joycedusman@aol.com.

The Rite Aid Foundation has awarded nearly $2.1 million to partner charities through its Full of Thanks Holiday Program. The Rite Aid Foundation created the special holiday program, which provides $5,000 grants, to help more than 400 KidCents charities across the country advance their efforts to improve the health, safety and well-being of children in their communities. Since 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation has awarded a total of $6.5 million through its holiday campaign. The impact of the gifts stretches from a dynamic therapeutic riding center in central Pennsylvania to an Oregon nonprofit that uses the power of joy to uplift children fighting cancer and serious illnesses. The KidCents program annually supports a select group of more than 400 nonprofit, childfocused organizations committed to improving the health and wellbeing of children living in the communities Rite Aid serves. KidCents charities can use their

Representatives from libraries have announced the selection of “Heartland” by Sarah Smarsh as the 2020 One Book, One Community (OBOC): Our Region Reads! selection. Throughout August, members of the public were invited to view a narrowed-down list of books and vote for one they were interested in reading and discussing with other community members. The five titles on this year’s voting ballot were “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds, “Dread Nation” by Justina Ireland, “Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth” by Sarah Smarsh, “Poet X” by Elizabeth Acevedo, and “ VOX” by Christina Dalcher. These options were chosen by the Book Selection Committee. Each of the five choices was deemed by the Book Selection Committee to be a good, discussable book, featuring well-developed characters who are challenged by issues in their lives with which readers can identify;

Sarah Smarsh available in quantity at reasonable cost, in various media formats; written at a high school reading level; and varied in type from others previously selected. The Book Selection Committee also seeks a book whose author or recognized experts on the author are willing to engage in discussion with readers at several events. “Heartland” is a memoir tracing Smarsh’s life among the

working poor. It explores how intergenerational poverty and life choices affect the lives of a Kansas farm family. Smarsh has written about socioeconomic class, politics, and public policy for the Guardian, the New York Times, the Texas Observer, Pacific Standard, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and many other publications. A recent Joan Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a former professor of nonfiction writing, Smarsh is a frequent speaker on economic inequality and media narratives relating this topic. She lives in Kansas, and “Heartland” is her first book. This year’s OBOC regional campaign represents collaboration between a total of 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and York counties and their community partners. Many individual libraries participate in surrounding central Pennsylvania counties. Everyone is welcome to read and discuss the book. Reading Group Guide

and related materials will be listed online beginning in January 2020. Reading campaign organizers encourage residents to read the book during January in preparation to attend free programs and discussions that will be held at public libraries beginning in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month. Participating libraries will stock copies of the book that can be borrowed free of charge beginning in January 2020. Books will also be available for purchase at area Giant Food Stores and at local booksellers. Program schedules for book discussion groups, author lectures, and other activities will be available at all participating public libraries and throughout the community. This information may be accessed online. Nearly all the programming is free of charge. For more information and updates about the campaign, readers may visit www.oboc.org.

Sparrow Websites has announced that its second annual Ugly Website Makeover Giveaway is open for nonprofit nominations through noon on Monday, Dec. 23. The winning nonprofit will receive a free website redesign valued at $6,500. Last year, Sparrow Websites gave the gift of a website makeover to two nonprofits that were in need of updated websites. This year, readers may nominate their favorite nonprofits. Readers can then boost their “tickets in the hat” by posting an ugly sweater image and tagging @SparrowWebsites on Instagram or Facebook, and they will receive five extra votes. On Dec. 23 at 4 p.m., Sparrow will select the winner of the website giveaway out of a Santa hat during a Facebook Live stream. To nominate a nonprofit, readers may visit www. sparrowwebsites.com/ugly. Each form submission will count as one entry and individuals may nominate a particular nonprofit only one time. Participants are welcome to nominate as many nonprofit organizations as they would like. For additional information, readers may email hello@sparrowwebsites.com or visit www.sparrowwebsites.com/ ugly.
