Veterans, families displaced by natural disasters, people transitioning from homelessness and those who have completed rehabilitation programs are just some of those who have benefited from the services of the Community Warehouse Project (CWP) of Chester County.

Founded in November of 2017 by Chester County resident Glenda Brion, CEO and executive director, CWP is a nonprofit service organization that collects and redistributes donated furniture and other household items to families and individuals who are referred to the agency by local social

service organizations.

“Most of our families and veterans have been homeless before they get to us. They work with housing agencies like Housing Authority (of Chester County) or (Chester County) Human Services or Home of the Sparrow. (The housing agencies) help with housing and they bring them to us for the furniture,” Brion explained. “The beauty of this is that all of those agencies were struggling on their own in the past to try and find things for their clients. We take that off of their shoulders.”

CWP stores an assortment of donated furniture and household items in two warehouse spaces

donated by EKahn Development Corporation. “When we were doing it initially, people came in and shopped, and they were responsible for taking their own stuff home because we didn’t have anyone to deliver it,” Brion said. “When we stopped having them come in (because of the pandemic), we had to get the furniture to them. (Chester) County supplied some funding for us to pay a mover. We now deliver everything, which is so much better because so many people had a really hard time getting transportation to pick up the stuff.”

Local Nonprofits Seek Volunteers

Area nonprofit organizations rely on volunteers to help them fulfill their missions. Local residents are encouraged to consider donating their time and talent as a way to make a positive difference in the community.

Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health challenges with volunteer friends from the community, is in need of volunteers. Participants are asked to meet with their friends for four hours each month for at least one year.

Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. “We need both male and female volunteers from (all) areas of the county,” noted Donna Kueny, program manager. She noted that the pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or coffee.

To learn more, contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope. org. More information, including a volunteer application, is also available at www.compeerchesco.org.

Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) is also in need of volunteers. LDAR is a foster-based rescue, but it also has a property where dogs are temporarily housed until they find their forever homes. In addition, some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Petco, located in the Bradford Plaza, 680 Downingtown Pike, West Chester.

“(We need volunteers to help with) walking dogs at the kennel in Avondale

and assisting with the cats at Petco,” said Mary Bauer, LDAR founder. “We are also always looking for fosters for cats and dogs.”

For details and to complete a volunteer application, visit www.lucky dawganimalrescue.com/volunteer.

The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-toone English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. Tutors are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. Tutors and students may meet virtually or in person. A teaching background or knowledge of another language is not necessary to become a tutor. For more information, visit www.volunteer english.org or www.facebook.com/ VolunteerEng or call Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, at

610-918-8222.

Another agency seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills is the Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a bachelor’s degree.

Tutors are asked to meet with a student for three hours a week, which typically takes place in two 90-minute sessions. Tutors and students have the option of meeting in person or virtually. OIC provides online training through the Pennsylvania Department of Education and offers monthly workshops for tutors.

For more information, contact Debbie Rikess, adult tutoring program coordinator, at drikess@ cc-oic.org or 610-344-4013 or 610-344-4014.

4-H Clubs Offered For Chester County Youths

Chester County 4-H continues to offer clubs for youths that give them a chance to explore their interests.

The next scheduled program is the Windy Hollow 4-H Horse Club, where children and youths ages 8 to 18 will learn facts about horse science and general horse knowledge. The club will meet on the first Saturday of the month beginning in February from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The meetings on Feb. 4, March 4, and April 1 will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), in Honey Brook. The remaining meetings on May 6, June 3, and July 1 will be held at Line It Up Farm in Coatesville.

“If socioeconomically or where they are located doesn’t lend for (horse) ownership, it a great opportunity for them to have that experience,” said 4-H Extension education Audrey Reith. “We hope that it leads to a lifelong interest.”

The first several club meetings will focus on horse safety guidelines, identifying and locating 30 external parts of the horse and making model horse tack, among other activities. “We will discuss markings and color patterns on a horse,” Reith said. “We will learn about bridles and saddles, and they will make bridles for a model horse.”

In subsequent meetings, Amy Pippin from Line It Up Farm will bring a horse for hands-on activities. Children will learn how to approach the horse, grooming techniques, how to clean a horse’s hooves and how to properly tie, saddle, bridle, unsaddle and unbridle a horse.

Reith said that the Windy Hollow 4-H Club is a longstanding club in the county, but is being revitalized to attract new members.

“Amy has been a longtime volunteer, and she is restarting the club with children new to

Church People calendar

Christians around the world attend Sunday services to thank God for His blessings and to worship Him with prayer and music. Church is a place where people all come together no matter their ages, ethnic backgrounds or economic status.

There is a lighter side to attending services as well - observing church people.

Although it may vary, church people fall into a few different categories. To begin with, there are the senior citizens, the faithful church goers who are very respected. They generally dress in their Sunday best and are always on time, even a bit early.

Conversely, there are the latecomers who are never on time despite their best efforts. These people often stand in the back of the church for a bit hoping to see an open seat. However, most times there is only room at the very front of the sanctuary, so the latecomers generally remain standing in the back or they are relegated to the overflow room watching a video feed - if the church has one.

There are also young families that attend church with toddlers or older children in tow. These moms and dads bring a large tote bag filled with toys and books, as well as snacks such as crackers or Cheerios and juice boxes, all in an effort to keep their children quiet. These methods generally seem to work - at least for a time. However, it is inevitable that one of the little ones will break free and make a run for it down the aisle with a mom or dad giving chase.

One subset of the young family is parents with infants. If they are lucky, the babies stay asleep

4-H Clubs continued from page 3

equine p rograms,” said Reith. “This gives kids an opportunity they may never get.”

Reith noted that each child will be given personalized attention when meeting a live horse. “Every child is gradually introduced to make sure they feel safe and secure,” she said. “When they do meet the horse, it’s their choice to lead it or learn to groom it.”

Another club that is currently meeting at the 4-H Center is the Cloverbuds, a program for children ages 5 to 7. Upcoming meetings will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Feb. 4 and Saturdays, Feb. 18 and March 4 and 18.

Cloverbuds enjoy age-appropriate activities to learn about animal, plant and environmental sciences and take part in STEM activities. At the

during the service. But babies don’t usually work that way. A crying baby is usually taken out of the sanctuary by mom or dad, and they often remain in the back with the latecomers.

Some churches also have a “security team” stationed in the back of the church. This is generally a few men from the congregation who keep an eye on the exits as a way to monitor safety and they provide assistance to church goers as needed. This also gives them an opportunity to catch up with the guys and talk in whispers about the Eagles game later in the day.

Not all, but some teenagers are reluctant to attend church and be away from their devices. I once witnessed a teen in front of me, using some agility skills, manage to hide his cellphone behind his back and text all during church without his parents noticing!

The church that I attend has decided to open its doors not only on Sundays, but on other days of the week as well so that people can stop in for some quiet time or to say a little prayer.

I took advantage of this one Saturday afternoon after running errands. While the church is beautiful, with its stained-glass windows and the ornate wooden pews and Communion rail, something was missing. There were no seniors, latecomers, young families, teenagers, crying babies or security men in church that day. I missed them all. It made me realize the truth of what a pastor once told me years ago - the church is not a building. Church is the people - the people who come together to thank God for His blessings and to worship Him with prayer and music.

club’s first meeting on Jan. 7, children built small flashlights and decorated T-shirts.

“The horse will be on hand at the Feb. 4 (Cloverbuds) meeting for an equine program and craft activities,” Reith noted. Future meetings will include making butter or ice cream, learning about robotics and meeting sheep and swine.

For more information or to register for the programs, visit https://4h. zsuite.org and choose “Sign Up” to begin the registration process. “You have to create a family profile and then create an avatar for each kid (in the family),” Reith noted. “They can enroll in the clubs they want to be in, and we can match them with their interests.”

Do’s And Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural

fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing

Warehouse Project

In addition to furniture, recipients receive pots and pans; linens, including towels, curtains, sheets and comforters; silverware; and small appliances like toasters.

According to its 2022 year-end report, CWP served more than 1,100 Chester County residents, which includes 424 households, 74 veterans and 509 children. In addition, 650 beds were distributed in 2022. “We serve an average of six to 10 families a week,” Brion noted.

Brion said that she is pleased by how much CWP has grown. “I didn’t know what to expect, and it has all happened organically. We needed

more (furniture), and we were able to get more,” she said. “We have been able to serve any client that comes to us. We have been able to help them with 95% of what they ask for.”

“One of the things that makes me very proud of what we do here is that not only is (the furniture) going to help people, but we are saving it from the landfill. It is pretty awesome,” she added.

CWP is currently in need of donations, especially microwaves and vacuum cleaners. For donation information, visit www.communitywarehouseproject .com or www.facebook.com/CWPCC or call 484-473-4360.

diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or trac king the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment

of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle

of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.
