letter from the editor TOWNLIVELY:
Community Courier Reimagined Hello, spring! What I love about springtime is that it’s a time of renewal and hope, where the possibilities are just ahead, just around the bend. After a very challenging year, I am pleased to announce the return of your community newspaper. Like the first crocus popping forth from the still-hard ground, a fresh, new townlively has emerged from what once was the Community Courier. Unlike its predecessor, townlively will be delivered to your mailbox monthly. I hope you enjoy the new design and layout. Though it may look different, one thing that we haven’t changed is our dedication to the community by presenting the good news of Chester County’s people, nonprofit organizations, schools, and businesses.
2020, I look forward to when businesses can once again greet patrons with a smile that will no longer be hidden behind a mask and kindergarten teachers greet apprehensive students with a reassuring hug on that first day. I invite you to share your stories and inform us when you see an ordinary person doing extraordinary good. This is community, and this is townlively. Email news items to news@ engleonline.com.

Compeer Program Provides Friendship, Support BY FRANCINE FULTON “This is the time (people) really need support; there is a lot of anxiety,” said Donna Kueny, program director for Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “There has never been a more appropriate time for staying in touch with people, letting them know someone cares about them and providing hope.” As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Prior to the pandemic, the pairs shared activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie. Currently, most clients and their volunteer friends continue to keep in touch through phone calls, email and texting. “We have not been able to do Zoom only because most of our folks don’t have computers at home,” Kueny noted.

Some pairs, however, have been meeting in person at restaurants or for shopping with masks and social distancing in place. Kueny noted that one client and his Compeer friend meet outdoors at local parks to hike.
Saturday April 3, 2021
“Everyone is still in contact. Some people are actually out doing things, and others are more comfortable talking on the phone or through text,” Kueny said. “We send out CDC guidelines all the time. We suggested they not do a lot of socialization over the holidays. We thought it would be best (for them) to say in touch virtually.”

Compeer is in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “Once they are cleared, we set up a date for training. Another date is set to go over some matches,” Kueny explained. “We are doing training over the phone and sending materials to the volunteers. That is all done virtually now.”

“We did not have a lot of volunteers for the first six months of the pandemic,” Kueny added. “It has just started picking up. We have some young female (volunteers) who just graduated from college who want to give back.”

Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional. “The people we accept into the program are working in conjunction with their therapist or case manager,” noted Kueny. “They have been stable in the community for a while, and they have the support of the entire team throughout the whole process.” Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. Two Neumann Scholars Recognized
Raphael-Joshua Reyes
Colin Graveley Saints Philip and James School (SSPJ) in Exton recently announced that two of its eighth-grade students, Colin Graveley and Raphael-Joshua Reyes, have been recognized as 2021 Neumann Scholars. This honor entitles them to a four-year scholarship to an Archdiocesan high school of their choice, which totals more than $40,000 in scholarship money for each student. The scholarship is named after Saint John Neumann, the fourth bishop of Philadelphia, who founded more than 200 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. Neumann Scholars are academically talented eighth-grade students in Archdiocesan parochial schools who achieve this honor through a process that involves essay writing and a rigorous standardized test. This year, 459 qualified students sat for the test, representing 112 Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Just 40 of these students, from 30 of the schools, were named Neumann Scholars. Sixty-five percent of SSPJ’s eighthgrade class was eligible to sit for the test, and Colin and Raphael-Joshua
were among eight recipients in Chester County. Colin and RaphaelJoshua were recognized during an announcement made via Zoom by The Connelly Foundation and attended by Archbishop Nelson Perez on Dec. 4, 2020. Colin and Raphael-Joshua both plan to attend Bishop Shanahan High School in the fall. SSPJ educates children from age 3 through eighth grade. Its students consistently achieve scores in the top 20th percentile on the Terra Nova standardized test, which tests achievement in multiple disciplines. The school’s curriculum includes honors math in grades five through eight, as well as an advanced math program for the fourth grade. There is a comprehensive and integrated STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math) curriculum throughout all grades as well as fully equipped science and STREAM labs. The curriculum is enriched with weekly classes in technology, music, art, Spanish and physical education for all grades. More information about Saints Philip and James School can be found at www.school.sspj.net.

musings The Three Words That Changed Our Lives BY FRANCINE FULTON Stay. At. Home. When the governor issued the stay-at-home order in March 2020, it impacted all of our lives forever. At first, it meant we could not grab a cup of coffee and a slice of apple pie at the local diner or catch a movie. As time moved on, it meant no haircuts, no visits to the gym and no trips to the pet store to buy our dogs’ favorite treats. And even more tragically, it meant we could not visit our relatives at the nursing home or at even at the hospital. Soon we began to realize that we would have to adapt the way we lived our lives on a daily basis. So, what changed? We learned to use technology. Zoom, a digital platform that allows us to see and speak to one another, became our lifeline. We met with friends and family members via Zoom, and Zoom was also the way we were able to stay at home to work. We learned to educate our children virtually. Our kitchen table became both an office and a classroom. We met our neighbors. Our dogs got plenty of outings during the stay-at-home order. We walked them many, many times a day. On our travels we talked to our neighbors outside from a distance. Funny, how I remember all the dogs’ names, but not necessarily their owners. Agnes. Precious. Asher and Millie next door. Reilly. And Blue the Rottweiler. On warm days, Blue would sleep outdoors in the sun. He was untethered, and at first, we quickly changed our route when he was outside. But we soon learned that Blue would just lie there peacefully and watch us pass.
We enjoyed family time. Of course, we began to watch more TV and movies, but when we got tired of that, we broke out the board games like Scrabble, Operation and Ker Plunk! We even found an old jigsaw puzzle, which we put on the dining room table. We would work on it from time to time and enjoyed watching the picture come together. We found the outdoors. When we wanted to get out of the house, we visited local outdoor sites. We went to Hopewell Lake in Elverson and Marsh Creek State Park in Eagle. We watched the French Creek as it cascaded over the rocks in St. Peter’s Village in Warwick Township. We even went to Lancaster County and visited Poole Forge in Narvon to sit by the water and take photos of the covered bridge. We read books. I have always been an avid reader, but during the pandemic reading became even more important. The problem? All the libraries were closed. So, I learned about Little Free Libraries. These are book boxes created by people in the community with the motto, “Take a Book, Leave a Book.” I visited the boxes religiously during the pandemic, dropping off books and taking some back home.
We cleaned. I no longer have a junk drawer! Well, it’s not as bad as it used to be. I dumped the junk drawer contents, which included old birthday candles, batteries, safety pins, rubber bands, a warranty card for the dehumidifier and so much more. Now that drawer is pretty well organized. We also cleaned closets. We boxed up clothes and toys and home décor. The boxes and bags waited for a while in the basement until, thankfully, the thrift stores opened once again. Now that life is gradually getting back to normal, we have continued to practice what we learned during the stay-at-home order. We still walk the dogs - a lot. I still use Zoom to talk to our relatives from other states and for work. We still go to church and we smile at one another through our masks. I never did tackle cleaning the basement, but I continue to read books from the Little Free Libraries. We still play games together, but not nearly as much. And the jigsaw puzzle is still on the dining room table.
We went to church virtually. It is not the same as attending church in person, of course, but seeing our pastor and hearing his message on Sundays was very comforting. One pastor told me that this option should have existed all along, so that older people or those who were at home sick that day could still participate in church. Now that churches are open with limited capacity, we are able to worship God and at least see members of our church family although there are no social events.

Preschool Prepares Children For Kindergarten BY FRANCINE FULTON Preparing children for kindergarten is the goal of the Thorndale Learning Center, a Christian preschool ministry of Thorndale United Methodist Church (TUMC) that opened in September 2020. Currently, a half-day program is offered for children ages 3 through 5. A full-day kindergarten program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be held in the fall. Director Laura Venezia noted that the new preschool opened on time despite the pandemic. “We have been open in person since September 2020,” she said. “All students wear masks and social distance. We The Rev. Shauna Ridge, pastor of Thorndale United Methodist Church, reads to preschool students at the follow all CDC guidelines.” Thorndale Learning Center. According to its mission statement, the preschool helps children with their social, emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual growth through educational experiences and play and by learning Christian values. Each preschool day features outdoor play when the weather permits and the learning of basic skills like the alphabet and counting. “They are learning letter recognition, number concepts, beginning sounds and all the basic skills needed to start kindergarten,” said
Venezia. “We have chapel time once a week and we have Bible lessons as well.” Preschool students also enjoy circle time and a snack brought from home. “Right now we have one class with two teachers. Next year, hopefully, there will be multiple classes,” Venezia said.
She noted that congregation members from TUMC, including the Rev. Shauna Ridge, pastor, are highly involved in the preschool. One of the congregation members holds cooking classes with the students, recently making pretzels. “The support that we’ve gotten from the congregation is amazing; they have made this happen,” Venezia stated. “Many of the congregation members have donated things to the preschool (or) have picked up donations. Church members cleaned toys, set up classrooms, painted walls and cleaned the carpet. They had fundraisers for us. This school would not have opened without the congregation.”

UAC has five ambulances, three responder units, and paramedics and EMTs who are available to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day.
Dance 4 Fitness Offers Classes, Personal Training Leslie Norton and Cindy Montagna, founders of Dance 4 Fitness, are continuing to help community members stay active and fit despite the ongoing restrictions and safety measures during the pandemic. Norton and Montagna, certified personal trainers and licensed Zumba instructors, continue to offer dance fitness classes and personal training groups. “It is so important that we all continue to take care of our physical, emotional and mental well-being by moving and getting that heart pumping on a regular basis,” said Norton. “Our goal is to keep our fitness community’s supportive environment.” Dance classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. at the Lionville School of Dance, 11 S. Village Ave., Exton, indoors. Classes are also livestreamed online and recorded for online viewing. Educational classes are also offered via Zoom. Topics have included healthy recipes, such as salad in a jar, and protein bite preparation. “One of the benefits of the new format and hybrid classes has been that we have been able to reach people who do not live in the area,” noted Montagna. “We
The donation will help the organization purchase life-saving equipment needed to keep up with the demands of the growing community. Kathi Cozzone, UAC’s executive director, noted that this community includes a growing senior population. UAC’s service area includes service to Arbor Terrace Exton, a senior living community offering personal and memory care, as well as a Bridges neighborhood that eases the transition from personal care to more comprehensive dementia care. BY FRANCINE FULTON Every student who enters the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) Adult Tutoring Program has a goal. Whether the goal is improving their English-speaking skills, passing the GED (General Educational Development) tests or seeking a better job, their objectives can often be better achieved with the help of a volunteer tutor. The Chester County OIC Adult Tutoring Program currently has a need for volunteers who are willing to work with an adult student for a total of three hours per week. The meetings usually take place in two 90-minute sessions. A four-year college degree is required to tutor, but a teaching background is not needed. Chester County OIC, a nonprofit organization serving all of Chester County, provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. In operation since 1979, Chester County OIC helps more than 800 adults per year. “Our program is based at the Chester County Library in Exton, with whom we have a long partnership,” noted Debbie Rikess, Adult Tutoring Program coordinator.
Mexico. Her goal is to improve her English so that she can get a better job,” noted Rikess. “Theresa is working with a young woman named Susan on earning her GED (diploma). Susan recently passed one of the four sections, and they are now working on the science unit.”
She noted that because of the pandemic, most tutor pairs are working virtually right now via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp and other platforms. As the weather turns warmer, she anticipates that some pairs will meet outdoors.
The third new tutor is Kathy, who started working with Paula at the beginning of February. “Paula is from Brazil, where she worked as a pharmacist,” Rikess said. “She would like to improve her English so that she can get her certification here as well as obtain citizenship.”
“We recently had three new tutors join our program. Cindy is working with Sofia, who is from
“We are very grateful to have these wonderful volunteers in our program,” Rikess added.
The Adult Tutoring Program tutor training is offered online by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once the training is complete, volunteers are matched with a student of their choosing based on level, time and the student’s goals. Tutors are given access to many free online resources so they can create a lesson plan. In addition to receiving assistance with passing the GED tests, students are also preparing for the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic

Coatesville VAMC Pharmacy Receives Award The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced that Coatesville VA Medical Center (VAMC) Pharmacy received the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) National HeRO Award for its contributions to VHA’s Journey to High Reliability. The award was presented during a virtual ceremony on March 5. Dr. Richard Stone, acting under-secretary for health, was the keynote speaker during the event recognizing nine total individuals and teams.
VHA’s enterprise-wide Journey to High Reliability aims to continuously improve VHA’s processes by maximizing patient safety and reducing harm to restore trust and ensure every veteran receives high-quality care. The 16-staff-member Coatesville VAMC Pharmacy team was recognized for its safety initiatives and COVID-19 response efforts to provide the best possible care to veterans. The team’s accomplishments include reimagining processes and protocols to adapt
to the COVID-19 environment when Pennsylvania’s initial stay-at-home order was announced in 2020. More than 6,600 veterans - those who had selected the option to pick up their prescriptions in person rather than to receive them by mail - lost the ability to refill their medications at the beginning of the pandemic. The pharmacy team recognized the serious potential impacts the stay-at-home order would have on the newly isolated veterans and developed a plan to contact every veteran on the list. Starting with those over age 65, veterans were offered the opportunity to switch to mail-order prescriptions. The pharmacy team was recognized for demonstrating VHA’s high reliability organization (HRO) principle Preoccupation with Failure: Anticipate Risk - Every Staff Member Is a Problem Solver when it anticipated the risk the stay-at-home order would have on the veterans it serves and then quickly implemented its solution.
Members of the at Coatesville VA Medical Center Pharmacy celebrate on the steps outside building 2 on their main campus after receiving the Veteran Health Administration’s (VHA) National HeRO Award.
Because of the team’s effort, prescriptions delivered by mail increased from 63% to 83% of all prescriptions issued. Additionally, there were no instances of veterans without medication and no reported medication errors.
Margaret Strate (left), chief of pharmacy services at Coatesville VA Medical Center, accepts the National HeRO Award from Jeff Beiler, medical center director, during a virtual ceremony on March 5.
The National HeRO Award is the highest level of HRO recognition available within VHA. It honors employees who advance VHA’s Journey to High Reliability through demonstration of VHA’s HRO Principles in Action. In addition to Preoccupation with Failure, these principles include Sensitivity to Operations: Focus on Front Line Staff and Care Processes; Reluctance to Simplify: Get to the Root Causes; Commitment to Re-
silience: Bounce Back From Mistakes; and Deference to Expertise: Empower and Value Expertise and Diversity. The HRO Steering Committee votes quarterly to select one recipient in each category for a National HeRO Award. Learn more about VA’s Journey to High Reliability by visiting www.patientsafety. va.gov/features/ and selecting “VHA’s HRO journey officially begins.”
