Rotary Club Focuses On Community Service BY FRANCINE FULTON Like other service organizations, the Rotary Club of Coatesville has been impacted by the pandemic, but club members have continued to serve the community. After the Rotary Club agreed to take over presenting the annual Strawberry Festival held on the grounds of the Brandywine Hospital, the event was canceled in 2020. This meant the club was unable to earn money for its grant program through its hamburger and hot dog stand operated during the festival. “Two years ago, the Brandywine Health Foundation decided to no longer host the festival. Several of our Rotary members decided that this festival, which brought joy to so many families, that provided dollars to the ride companies and food vendors and thousands of dollars to give back to the communities, needed to continue. It was a big step,” said club president Dave Seegers. “Then came COVID, and the 2020 festival was postponed. COVID has continued much longer than ever anticipated, which meant the 2021 festival was canceled as well.” Because of the cancellations, the club has refocused its efforts on community service projects. “The COVID pandemic has not deterred us. We have still given away grants with what money we still have,” said Seegers. “We have been busy with drives such as collecting essentials for the senior citizens of Coatesville and Downingtown through Brandywine Valley Active Aging (BVAA), formerly the Coatesville Senior Center.” The boxes contain items such as soap, deodorant, bath sponges and shampoo. “These were all things requested by the BVAA,” said Seegers. Upcoming events include a workday at Bondsville Mill Park, where club members will help out by putting down crushed stone for the park’s amphitheater. Volunteers will continue their work at the Chester County Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired building located on First Avenue in Coatesville. “Recently we were there painting, and we will be helping to build raised flower beds and planting flowers,” said Seegers. Club members will also take part in a Lincoln Highway cleanup in May. The club, which formerly met every other Thursday at the Coatesville Country Club, now holds its meetings via Zoom. Each meeting features a guest speaker. “A directive by Rotary International requests that no live meeting occur until after June 30,” Seegers pointed out.
The Rotary Club is currently seeking new members, particularly young people from the community who want to help fulfill the club’s motto, “Service Above Self.” The Rotary Club was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who wanted to form a club of business professionals. “Paul Harris thought, ‘Why not form a group of businesses that could meet regularly to talk about their successes and share those ideas for the betterment of the community?’ The idea caught on and grew quite quickly,” Seegers said. “They decided to meet at various locations or to rotate meetings. Hence, the idea of Rotary was born.” For membership and meeting information, contact Seegers at dmseegers45@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/rotaryclubofcoatesville.

believe that there is much to be learned through gardening, especially when the gardener is a child. Patience, responsibility, preparedness, diligence, and caring are qualities that can be cultivated when a child actively nurtures a plant from seed to harvest.
Planting annuals to add color to the summer perennials not yet in bloom is a favorite task for 9-year-old Paityn.
For as long as I can remember, weeding has been a part of my life. When my siblings and I were kids, we’d jump on a trailer pulled by our father’s riding mower to our half-acre garden a mile down the road. Pulling weeds was a chore

that was only made bearable by the occasional ripe tomato, pepper, or bean that I ate fresh from the stalk. These days, other than some herbs and tomatoes, the garden in my tiny backyard is filled with pollinator-friendly plants. When my first grandchild was just a toddler, I decided to set aside a corner of my yard as a special place where he could explore and play, all while learning about taking Two pixies and a sleeping gnome hide among care of a garden. Little by little, the bugleweed and bleeding hearts in this chila gnome village took root. Under the maple tree, we plant- dren’s play garden appropriately named Gnome ed shade-loving ferns, hosta, Village by eldest grandson Parker. and black-eyed Susan. We grew goldenstar, bugleweed, and creeping phlox, all forms of ground cover that could withstand the trample of little feet. Together we created a magical world that set the foundation for a love of nature and gardening. Since then, three more grandchildren have brought their ideas and creativity to Gnome Village. Every April, we do our spring cleanup, where the kids pick up sticks and twigs, rake leaves, and repair the tiny structures in this otherworldly spot in our backyard. The sense of ownership they have for this 50-square-foot plot of land is remarkable.

All four grandkids look forward to helping out in my garden, too. Mulching, staking tomatoes in large planters, and planting new flowers are among the tasks they enjoy. I always add a few new annuals in the spring to infuse more color until the summer perennial blooms arrive. A trip to the local garden center to allow the kids to help choose the annuals is always fun.

Once the bee balm, coneflowers, salvia, lavender, coreopsis, and cosmos begin to bloom and the bees and butterflies abound, I’m afforded the perfect opportunity to educate my young gardeners about the importance of planting pollinator-friendly flowers. Memorials Remember Lives Lost BY FRANCINE FULTON
From a distance, the numerous pinwheels displayed at Warwick County Park, Springton Manor Farm and Nottingham Park on the weekend of March 27 and 28 may have resembled a unique art installation. However, the meaning of the display was more poignant. The pinwheels were set in place as a makeshift memorial to residents of Chester

Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline held a special memorial service at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore on March 27, where they laid three wreaths - one to honor the 543,975 lives lost nationally; one for the 24,953 lives lost across Pennsylvania; and one to commemorate the 747 lives lost in Chester County. In addition to remembering those that lost their lives, Maxwell gave credit to health care workers. “By the very nature of their professions, our doctors, our nurses, hospital staff, long-term care personnel and EMTs all understand and accept that sometimes their jobs go beyond diagnosis, treatment and care,” he said. Kichline concluded the ceremony, quoting a passage from the book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy: “‘What do we do when our hearts hurt?’ asked the boy. ‘We wrap them with friendship, shared tears and time (until) they wake hopeful and happy again.’” To view the entire memorial ceremony, visit www. facebook.com/ChesCoGovt and search for the post from March 27.

Sharing Love - One Lasagna At A Time

Busy moms, families affected by COVID-19, teachers, first responders and others are invited to request a complimentary dinner from Lasagna Love, a national organization that matches people in need of a homecooked meal with a volunteer home cook. Individuals can also anonymously nominate a friend, family member or neighbor who they believe would enjoy a lasagna.

beginning of the pandemic by Rhiannon Menn of California, who wanted to help those who had lost their job or were afraid or unable to leave their homes.
As part of the program, those who would like to request a lasagna or nominate a friend to receive a lasagna can sign up at www.lasagnalove.org. “The person who is nominated would get an email and it says, ‘You have been nominated; here is how you accept,’” Engle explained. “It directs them to the website, and they complete the process.” Those who would like to cook lasagnas are also invited to register at the website. “I have some volunteers who sign up just for one time. Some people sign up for once a month,” Engle noted. “The most active person I have (makes) five lasagnas a week.”
The lasagna is delivered at a mutually convenient time, and non-contact deliveries are encouraged. “I text (the recipient) and tell them ‘I am your lasagna maker, and I will leave it (at your house) and text you when it’s there,’” said Engle. “Some volunteers knock on the door and wait until the recipient comes and takes the food or wait in the car to make sure it gets picked up.”
Engle emphasized that lasagnas are not just for low-income recipients. “Part of the mission statement is that there are different kinds of needs,” she stated. “We are not just serving people in need financially. We deliver to people who are not working or (who are) working multiple jobs or work from home and homeschool their kids. It’s only one meal and it won’t change the world for the family, but it will change their world for that one day.” For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/WeAreLasagnaLove.

14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children.
On hand at the 2020 EPC Golf Outing during a donation from $3,000 presenting sponsor Alwine Security to GSS were (from left) EPC representatives Lauren Hillegas, Jeremy Engle, and Jocelyn Engle; Alwine Security owner Jamie Alwine; Nate Hoffer, CEO of GSS; and Derek Sanders and Matt Rhoads of Alwine.
“I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS.

Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing.

“Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.”

GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.

“With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.”

Cats, Kittens Seeking Forever Homes BY FRANCINE FULTON Those interested in providing a forever home to a cat or kitten currently in foster care are invited to check out the Lifesaving Pet Rescue of Chester County Facebook page started by Josie Davis. Davis, who fosters pets and volunteers with Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, decided to start the page as a way to find homes for her rescues. Currently, Davis fosters cats for several local organizations, including Angie’s Stray Foundation, founded by Ruth Jenkins of Oxford. “I foster for Ruth, which is essentially how I got started,” Davis explained. “Ruth also volunteered at LaMancha (Animal Rescue of Coatesville) and we connected through there. I have been fostering for three years and Ruth has been doing this for 20 years. I do the Lifesaving Pet Rescue (page) to let the community know who is available for adoption.” Featured on the page right now is Teddy Bear, an older cat that is up to date with vaccines, has been neutered and is feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FELV) negative. “He was found living under a porch,” said Davis. “He is a sweet old boy who loves to sit next to you on the couch. He uses the litter box without issue. Teddy deserves a forever home; I hope he can find his person.” Also available is Holly, who is 7 months old, spayed and up to date with vaccines. “She has been in foster care since she was very young. She is really in need of a forever home,” said Davis.

The Facebook page also features other animals offered for adoption through the Brandywine Valley SPCA, among other rescue groups. “I try to help network,” noted Davis. “You want to see (the pets) do well.” Davis said that because of COVID-19, the kitten population has increased because some spay and neuter programs ceased operations during the pandemic. “Last year was so bad. I had (so many foster) kittens,” she shared. “I just adopted out my last kitten from last season. I had her (since) September and was super attached, but I have my own cats and there are always more cats to foster.” She encourages those who feed feral cats to take part in local Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs. “Helping get the spay/neuter message out there could save millions of innocent lives by reducing the population and preventing suffering • Over 100 of kittens born to feral Perennial Varieties cats,” she stated. • Geraniums • Petunias • Hanging Baskets • Planters • Succulents • Vegetable Plants • Strawberry Plants • Cactus

The Chester County Studio Tour, which highlights the work of local artists, will take place on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As part of the tour, which is free and open to the public, the community is invited to view the artwork of 148 artists, which will be on display in 59 studios around Chester County.

She said the work was inspired during a blizzard in November of 2019. “As I sat in snarled traffic in the historic section of Downingtown, I made use of my time traveling nowhere by sketching gorgeous buildings, visible through townlively.com

For The Love Of Sports
BY FRANCINE FULTON While people often disagree on the hot topics of the day, including politics, religion and who has better coffee, Starbucks or Dunkin’, one thing that binds many people together is our love of sports. Whether it be professional teams like the Phillies or the Eagles, college favorites like Penn State or local high school and Little League Baseball teams, we love to root for the home team. Even those who are not sports fans seem to jump on the bandwagon when the local team is in contention for a championship or if there is a heartfelt story to be told about a special athlete. There is no better example of our love of sports than when perfect strangers can carry on a complete conversation about a team. If you spot a person who is wearing a Phillies jersey, for example, you can approach him or her and immediately talk about the team’s offensive skills or the strength of the bullpen. Anyone wearing Eagles attire can easily spark a discussion about the quarterback situation with another person similarly dressed. Yes, a lively sports talk can unite us no matter our ages or backgrounds. In 2001, when the world was reeling from the
Great Gardens Start Here!
against the Colorado Rockies, the Phillies players left the safety of the bench in the dugout during a thunderstorm to help the grounds crew manage the tarp as it blew in the wind. They forgot for a moment that they were professional athletes and simply responded as kind human beings to an emergency situation, where the tarp could have possibly trapped the workers.
terrorist attacks, sports were suspended for a time. I will never forget the first Phillies game that took place after the national tragedy. It felt so good to watch the game and feel some sense of normalcy. People in the stands carried flags, and the playing of the national anthem took on a whole new meaning. During the same time period at a Flyers game, the team actually stopped play to listen to President Bush as he spoke about the tragedy. It was a poignant moment as the players stood on the ice in full gear looking up at the big screen to watch the president address the nation.
You can view the whole event on YouTube by searching for “Phillies @ Rockies 7-8-07 Tarp Incident!” After you watch the team help out the crew, it just might make you love the Phillies as much as I do.
For me, there is nothing like watching a live game. Of course we enjoy the entertainment that goes on between innings in baseball, but it is so interesting to see first-hand how the players shift on the field when different batters come into the box. And, of course, it’s exciting to catch a foul ball or watch a homerun sail over the fence.
