Experience Chester County Like A Tourist t’s that time of year again. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and hotels, attractions, and destinations throughout the county are getting ready to welcome visitors from around the globe. In 2019, before everything shut down, visitor spending was $46 billion in Pennsylvania. That’s a significant number, but you might wonder why you should care about what tourists spend in Pennsylvania. In addition to the more than 333,000 jobs directly supported by the travel industry, visitors generated $4.8 billion in state and local taxes. In a nutshell, that equals $950 in tax savings for every household in Pennsylvania!

After an abysmal year for tourism in 2020, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. The CDC’s new recommendations for those fully vaccinated has people in the hospitality industry breathing a collective sigh of relief. According to Nina Kelly, director of marketing and communications for Chester County’s Conference & Visitors Bureau, things are looking up. “With the restrictions easing, we are looking for more visitors and robust events throughout the summer season into the glorious fall in Chester County’s Brandywine Valley,” Kelly explained. More than ever, families are visiting nearby destinations and enjoying the benefits of a staycation. When was the last time you acted like a tourist in your own backyard? Day trips are great, but spending the night in a hotel or bed-and-breakfast will enhance your experience. You’ll find great stay-andplay packages at hotels throughout the area, making your staycation in Chester County fun and affordable. Some popular attractions are already welcoming visitors. “Longwood Gardens remains a draw for visitors seeking the townlively.com
A couple’s night out at Longwood Gardens. outdoor garden experience, Kelly said, “and the Festival of Fountains will run through the entire summer.” Anticipation is high for the return of events such as annual Juneteenth celebrations. Juneteenth is often referred to as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, but regardless of what you call it, Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the war and declare slavery abolished. On Saturday, June 19, the Chester County History Center will offer Underground Railroad in West Chester Walking Tours from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. The family-friendly tour covers approximately 1.5 miles, with
visits to locations that played a role in the struggle for freedom. The tour is entirely outdoors and will be held rain or shine. Reservations are required, and admission is by donation. For more information, visit http://chesterco historical.org/node/1057. “A highlight of summer’s end will be Citadel Country Spirit USA - a three-day outdoor music festival in August,” said Kelly. “We anticipate a pent-up demand for in-person entertainment to drive visitors from around the country to experience country music’s finest!” If people are willing to travel from across the country for Chester County’s offerings, why not schedule your summer staycation now and see what all the fuss is about?

HIGH 5K for CONNOR
Raises Needed Funds
BY FRANCINE FULTON HIGH 5 Soccer, a free program for youths with special needs offered by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA), recently hosted “HIGH 5K for Connor,” featuring a 5K, a 1-mile youth run and a children’s fun run, on April 18 at Fellowship Field in Chester Springs. The event was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 but was canceled because of the pandemic. The fundraiser was for Connor Dobbyn, 12, a student at West Vincent Elementary School, who has been diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome Type C, also known as childhood Alzheimer’s. Sanfilippo syndrome Type C is a rare, progressive and genetic disorder that primarily affects the brain cells and spinal cord. Currently, there is no cure. Money raised at the event will go toward a clinical trial for Sanfilippo syndrome. “We raised over $31,000 for the Sanfilippo Foundation through race registrations and donations,” reported Jenn Wagner, who is the coach of HIGH 5 Soc-

HIGH 5 Soccer allows youths with disabilities to enjoy the game of soccer through soccer-based activities and games that are adapted to their abilities. As part of the program, players, who range in age from 5 to 18, are paired with volunteer buddies, who are predominantly local high school and middle school students. In 2020, HIGH 5 soccer sessions were held virtually,

For the spring 2021 season, play has returned to in-person activities at Fellowship Field. However, the numbers of players and buddies are limited for each session, activities have been modified and mask wearing and social distancing have been put into place. Matt and Jenn hope that HIGH 5 will resume normally in the fall.

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car.

CCWS Holds Virtual Banquet In lieu of an in-person event, Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a local nonprofit pregnancy care medical center, is holding a virtual fundraising banquet. The banquet, titled “Celebration of Life,” premiered on May 3, with more than 25 virtual party hosts holding watch parties in their homes. The goal is to raise $165,000 by Monday, May 31. Following a slideshow that details the programs and services offered by CCWS, a 20-minute presentation is featured, which includes comments by board members Amy Cudd and Dr. Aaron Chambers along with Myriam Ruager, CCWS executive director. “Our philosophy is, ‘Love them both - mom and baby,’” said Ruager. “We are committed to support the life of the families we serve throughout their entire journey in parenthood.”

There were also three community-wide diaper giveaways in 2020 where anyone could receive free diapers and wipes, which were distributed at the CCWS Coatesville location in a driveup format. To view the virtual banquet and to learn about donation options, visit https://give butter.com/ccws. CCWS has been serving county residents as a pregnancy resource center since 1985. It has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, at 203 S. Walnut St. in Kennett Square and at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester. For more information about CCWS, call 610-3830930 or visit www.ccws medical.org or www.face book.com/ccwsmedical.
The presentation also included three client testimonies of two mothers and one father who received services at CCWS. In addition to offering pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds, CCWS hosts childbirth classes, parenting classes and virtual Bible studies. Clients may also receive referrals to organizations such as homeless prevention and food assistance programs. Clients who attend car seat safety classes will receive a free car seat upon completion. Families can also use the points they earn from attending classes to “purchase” parenting essentials from the CCWS Parenting Boutique. CCWS did not close its doors in 2020. Throughout the pandemic, CCWS gave away emergency parenting bags weekly. Each bag con-

Church Sets Summer Carnival, Seeks Donations
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Trinity Assembly of God (AG) and ABC Early Learning Center (ELC) will present an outdoor summer carnival on Friday, June 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will feature family-friendly activities, including games, a petting zoo, bounce houses and food, including cotton candy. In lieu of an admission fee, attendees will be asked to make a donation to purchase ventilators for people living in India who have COVID-19. The church has partnered with its missionary, who is on the board of Mercy Hospital of Calcutta and is the director of the charity Cry of India, to provide the ventilators. “We will have free food, including burgers and hot dogs, grilled on-site,” noted Megan Potts, ABC-ELC director. “Everything at the event is free as long as you bring any donation for the Cry of India.” Last year, the carnival was canceled because of the pandemic. Potts expressed regret for the cancellation because it was a milestone year. “2020 was (the preschool’s) 20th anniversary, and this year is the church’s 50th anniversary,” Potts noted. Trinity AG pastor Jimmy Smuda explained that he contacted the missionary after hearing about the pandemic’s effects in India, especially the new coronavirus variants. “We asked him what we could do to help him and support him,” said Smuda. “He sent us a CNN video that we showed to our church (congregation). It’s a lot more dire than I had even realized. Ventilators are at a premium right now.”

According to Smuda, those who donate can be sure that their money will be used directly to finance the cost of purchasing additional ventilators. “One hundred percent of their donation is tax deductible, and (if there are) any administration fees that occur, the church will cover those,” he stated. “We will take up funds until things change in India.” Trinity AG and ABC-ELC are located at 1022 Pottstown Pike, West Chester. For more information about Trinity AG, call 610-692-1897 or visit www.trinityag.org or www.facebook.com/TrinityAGWC. Local Students Win Art Contest
The Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC) held its fifth annual high school student art exhibition and contest in April. The art contest, which is open annually to all Chester County high school students, received 27 submissions from seven area schools and youth art organizations. Submissions were available for public viewing at The Brow Bar in downtown West Chester for a week. The pieces were evaluated by a panel of judges, which included Victoria Browning Wyeth, granddaughter of famous Chester County artist Andrew Wyeth; Rep. Dianne Herrin; Jackie Szafara, executive director of the National Arts Program (NAP); Gary Altoonian, founder of Altoonian Photography; and John Baker, professor emeritus at West Chester University and president

The two teenagers were playing video games at her house when she told them to finish up at about a quarter after 6 because they would be eating dinner. Her son’s friend seemed puzzled by the phrase. She later learned that terms like a quarter after, half-past 6 and 10 minutes to 5 were completely foreign to him. Apparently, he could only read time from a digital clock. So, he recognized 6:15 p.m. but not a quarter after 6.
Playing outdoors. A lot of youths today spend a good deal of time on their phones and tablets. We did not have devices. Instead, we played outside. A wide-open field was turned into a baseball diamond or a place to play football, soccer or kickball. When we were younger, we played hopscotch, jacks and tag. Our games were simple. If it rained, we played checkers or built houses of cards. Many families, including ours, fight hard to townlively.com

Going to the record/video store. When our favorite group came out with a new album, we could not wait for a trip to the record store. So many bands and singers prided themselves on having the most creative artwork on the album cover, which is now a lost art. We also enjoyed trips to the video stores, like Blockbuster, where there were hundreds of movies on VHS to choose from. We argued about the titles, but eventually settled on one or two movies to take home. And, of course, we always rewound them in the VCR player when we were done watching them. “Be Kind, Rewind.”

Here are some other traditions I miss. Sunday drives. Growing up, my family did not have a lot of money, so we found free or inexpensive things to do. On Sundays, we always took a long drive. This was generally followed by getting ice cream at a local dairy that had a large pond, where we fed the ducks stale bread that we had brought from home. My dad also loved going to the local airport near our house, where we watched the small planes take off and land. He had such a fascination with airplanes, and I am so glad that, before he passed away, we were able to take him to a real air show, where we got the see the Blue Angels and much more.

Yes, technology has greatly improved our quality of life. It has made everything so much easier, from shopping and getting an education to working at home and enjoying music and entertainment. But there is nothing like writing a letter - not an email - but actually getting out pen and paper. It is also a simple pleasure to read a book borrowed from the library, not one that is downloaded onto a device.
keep traditions alive and to make our own traditions as well. And although that dairy is now a fitness center and there are no more ducks on the pond, my family and I can still go on a Sunday drive back to the airport and watch the planes take off and land.

A teenager not appreciating the subtleties of telling time got me to thinking. What else do youths of today not know about? A list quickly came to mind, including vinyl records and record players, payphones, foldable maps kept in the glove compartment, beepers, telephone books, Myspace, dial-up internet, CB radios, VCR players and unlocking a car with a key.
