OIC Seeks Volunteer Tutors BY FRANCINE FULTON The Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills. “There is an increasing number of men and women from all over the world who are choosing to make Chester County their home. They come in search of a better, often safer, life for themselves and their families,” said Robin Chiavetta, assistant program coordinator. “The need for volunteer tutors is great, as we have a long waiting list of students.” Among the students currently being tutored by OIC volunteers are two women from Ukraine. “One has been in the country a little while, but her husband had to stay (in Ukraine). She and her children were able to escape. Fortunately, she has a sister here and they were able to come here,” Chiavetta said. “The other one has an adult son who is still there. He had to stay to fight. We found a tutor who is Ukrainian and wants to work with (the mother).” “As the situation there continues, we expect to see many more like them,” Chiavetta added. A four-year college degree is required to tutor, but teach-
ing experience is not needed. The training is offered online through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Tutors are asked to meet with their student three hours each week, usually in two 90-minute sessions. Pairs can meet in person at local libraries or other mutually convenient locations such as a coffee shop or the cafe section of a grocery store. They may also choose to meet virtually over Zoom, FaceTime or other online platforms. “We still have some tutors who are more comfortable (meeting online), or because of logistics, it works better. (Meeting virtually) was a bonus that came out of the pandemic,” Chiavetta said. “We have a lot of students who don’t have cars or can’t get rides. It’s nice for them to still have a tutor and not to worry about transportation.” Chester County OIC provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. Students come from countries such as Brazil, Afghanistan, Egypt and Mexico. “Phil is working with Lucia. She is from Venezuela and wants to get a better job and become a U.S. citizen. Mary works with Alex, who was a lawyer in Brazil and wants to learn English and continue his career. Katie is helping Kim, a stay-at-home mom who wants to learn English so

Bishop Shanahan Celebrates Commencement Bishop Shanahan High School (BSHS) held its commencement exercises on June 10 in the BSHS auditorium, paying tribute to the Class of 2022. This year’s graduating class included 252 students, all of whom were accepted to four-year colleges, including Brown University, Colgate University, University of Notre Dame and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The class received more than $49 million in total college scholarships, of which 34 were full-tuition scholarships and 96 were presidential scholarships. The Most Rev. Michael J. Fitzgerald, the auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia Overseeing Catholic Education, presided over the graduation ceremony. Julia Vito, who will attend the Villanova University Honors College, was the valedictorian. Megan Bradley, who will attend Purdue University,
was the salutatorian. During her speech, Julia reflected on the shared experience of her classmates, saying, “Shanahan has led each of us to distinct accomplishments as athletes, musicians, artists and scholars. Although we’re called to different paths, we are united as people for others and children of God.” During the commencement exercises, the Shanahan Medal was posthumously awarded to former Bishop Shanahan principal Sister Maureen McDermott, IHM. Most recently, Sister Maureen was the chief academic officer and superintendent of secondary schools for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This medal is awarded annually to a person or group of persons whose service, commitment and dedication to Catholic education deserve the recognition and gratitude of the Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2022 at Bishop Shanahan High School were held on June 10. musings Honoring Our Super Store Workers BY FRANCINE FULTON During the pandemic, we honored medical workers, including doctors and nurses, first responders and those in related fields. Many Chester County hospitals placed a sign outside their buildings that read, “Heroes Work Here.” There is another group of people who should receive our accolades, and that is those who work as stock clerks, cashiers and managers at local grocery stores. Despite being short-staffed and experiencing supply chain issues, they did their best to keep their stores up and running. I remember during the shutdown when the highlight of the day would be grocery shopping. We could not go the movies or walk the mall, but we could go to Walmart and shop
the aisles - following the arrows that asked us to travel in one direction. And even though many of the shelves that held essential items like toilet paper and hand sanitizer were empty, we still had a place to go. Recently, nearly all of the grocery stores have made the transition to self-serve checkouts. At the beginning, shoppers rejected the technology. There were generally four or five lanes reserved for self-checkout and one that had an actual cashier, and that was the line that generally wound its way around the store. The self-service lane can be a fast and efficient way to check out, unless there are glitches. Sometimes, the scanner doesn’t read the prices correctly and shoppers have to call over the person who monitors the self-checkout lanes. And then there is the
dreaded “price look-up,” when people have to weigh a produce item in order to purchase it, like a head of cabbage or a bunch of bananas. I saw a man in a grocery store who had one green bell pepper. When he could not figure out how to weigh it, he simply dropped it in his bag when the store worker wasn’t looking. Add “security guard” to grocery store workers’ long list of job duties. I have a special affinity for grocery store workers. I worked in a grocery store part time to help pay my way through college. We did some crazy things back then like “turkey bowling,” which is when we rolled frozen turkeys down the aisle to knock down bottles of soda. The customers were also fodder for our fun. We nicknamed a few for their eccentricities like “Speed Shopper,” who took forever to pick out her groceries, and

“Silver Slippers,” who always wore them when shopping. Today, many grocery stores are multipurpose, offering restaurant areas and coffee shops where people can meet friends, eat lunch or use free Wi-Fi. The larger superstores may also include an auto shop, hairdresser, gas station and bank. You can get your oil changed while shopping for groceries, deposit your paycheck, get a haircut and a manicure and fill up your tank - all in one location. So the next time you are in a grocery store, you may want to share a smile with the workers instead of a complaint about the high prices or shortage of items. And, if you have a bunch of bananas, a head of cabbage or one green bell pepper, you may want to skip the self-checkout lanes.
People involved in the Chester County Youth Center’s partnership with Brandywine Valley SPCA’s “SAFE” program include (from left) Donna Jordan, BVSPCA; Matt Howard, Chester County Youth Center program coordinator; Kristi Washington, Chester County Youth Center case worker; Amy Mason and Lisa McQuilkin from BVSPCA; and Deb Maccariella, Chester County Youth Center director.
